Warm neutrals are key, with rustic tweeds contrasting beautifully against fairisle and jacquard patterning to create a quietly modern and textured feel. Colour is muted, with anthracite, gunmetal and chocolate hues all sitting perfectly alongside ochre and camel shades. These trends are reflected perfectly throughout the following three design stories: Wilderness Inspired by wide open, dramatic landscapes, Wilderness showcases an iconic mix of rustic plaids, checks and fairisles. Cosy, patterned knits feature alongside cabled sweaters and richly decorated cardigans in a highly atmospheric collection. i Craftwork Traditional in style, Craftwork celebrates pattern, colour and texture and showcases intricate and eye-catching designs ranging from pretty sweaters to an iconic wrap. Essentials Key shapes are translated effortlessly into style icons by the new Essentials collection. Worked in pale neutral tones, pieces range from open work tops and longline cardigans to slouchy sleeve sweaters. Knitting & Crochet Magazine will be available from July 15th 2014, ensure you receive your copy first by taking out a Rowan Subscription membership, featuring lots of lovely exclusive benefits! i June 2014 - 7 Retailer in the Spotlight… We caught up with Rebecca from NORFOLK YARN “Norfolk Yarn has been trading on the outskirts of Norwich for over eight years, specialising in high quality wools and fibres for knitting, crochet, spinning and felting, and we have been Rowan stockists for about four years now. Part of our business idea is to concentrate on natural fibres, so we tend to stock more high end yarns, I also love good colour so we have a lot of hand dyed yarns, as well as organic and Fair Trade yarns. Teaching new skills is also an integral part of our business and we teach spinning. I have a rigid heddle loom set up for customers to have a go at, and I also spend a lot of time helping customers to learn new techniques and assist with problems that arise. Our business is a family affair and I am assisted by my daughter, Caitlin, my mum, Christine and my husband, Paul (who also has a proper job!) At the beginning of this year, we had the opportunity to move premises to a larger store in Norwich city centre. The move was completed over Easter weekend and we are now up and running at the new store, 11 Pottergate. The store is very bright and airy and has a lovely uncluttered feel, which was just the effect I wanted to achieve. The increased size of the store has allowed us to increase our stock range and take on Rowan fabrics and Coats threads as well. We also have a much larger space to run my workshops from, and I am in the process of setting up workshops to cover the rest of the year.” NORFOLK YARN Tel. 01603 927034 8 - June 2014 June 2014 - 9 Yarn in the Spotlight… Fine Art This month, we are championing our beautiful hand painted Fine Art yarn. Sourced from Cape Mohair Spinners in South Africa, the yarn is painted by the team at Lance and Ines Khoury’s hand painting department, which takes enormous pride in employing individuals from some of the poorest and most marginalised sections of the community. One of their goals is to create opportunities for growth and development, and this ethos is something Rowan is extremely proud to support. As a result of the increase in production needs following on from Rowan’s interest in the yarn, the company has had to relocate to larger premises and take on more members of staff. The hand painting process is quite a complex one, and requires practice to achieve the correct technique. Each hank of yarn is laid out and then marked with dimensions according to the project. The dye is then applied using sponges; each yarn requires a specific technique according to how the composition absorbs the dye. The hanks are then steamed to set the colour, rinsed, softened, and finally dried. Each 100g hank is an exquisite blend of 45% wool, 20% mohair, 25% polyamide for added durability and a luxurious 10% silk. What’s more, only one of these hanks is required to knit a pair of socks. Accessory designs will also fit perfectly with the yarn composition, creating flawless shawl and shrug designs with outstanding stitch definition. Alongside this yarn is the stunning Fine Art Aran, where eight beautiful hand 10 - June 2014 Fine Art Serin 301 Tawny 302 Waxwing 303 Raven 304 Kingfisher 305 Lapwing 306 Pheasant 307 Chiff-Chaff 308 Elm 309 Maple 310 Hornbeam 311 Oak 312 Yew 313 Rowan 314 Foxtrot 548 Bachata 551 Flemenco 549 Fandango 550 Bolero 543 Congo 545 Azonto 552 Rumba 546 Fine Art Aran June 2014 - 11 painted shades are showcased brilliantly in a 50% wool, 20% mohair, 25% alpaca and 5% silk aran weight. No longer are we reliant on our local wool shop we can source possum yarn from Australia, llama from South America, hand dyed from America. The possibilites are endless. We can all be designers and publish our patterns for anyone in the world to use. As a business, this has been something we have truly embraced. You can find us on Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, Twitter, and, my favourite, Facebook. Why is Facebook my favourite? I love that it spans all ages and it is so easy to interact with our audience. One of our best features running at the moment is ‘Try it on Tuesday’. Three members of staff try on one garment and wear it in their own way. It is a great way to show how different styles suit different body shapes. We have also brought this concept into the shop. The garment of the week goes into the shop for customers to try on and have their photo too. This is a great way for on and offline to work together. The internet has certainly made the world a smaller place, and social media has meant that we can all be friends!.
