WELCOME TO SUMMERFEST, WELCOME TO DEEP RIVER! We are so glad you are here, and we are super excited to present our best festival yet! Whether you are here for the first time or you are a seasoned, grizzled Summerfester, keep this program close, as it will be your guide and compass to finding your way to Summerfest's multitude of exciting events and performances. This year, Summerfest is branching out musically, by offering an additional stage for daytime performances, four big daytime shows on our Main Stage, and almost double the number of local and touring performers playing live! Canada's newest supergroup, Mounties, is anchoring our festival this year, with more support than ever before from a wide range of rising and established Canadian artists. We have something for you this year, if you like country, alt country, rock, electric roots, bluegrass, pop, classical (vocal and woodwind trio), avant-garde musical theatre, buzz blues, EDM, do wop, indie, retro, acoustic, Guinean drumming, looping or Ottawa Valley fiddling! Summerfest is not just a music festival, though. We have outdoor Shakespearean theatre, natural horsemanship and artists in their gardens. And more artisans in our village than ever before. For the sporty types, we are focusing on building our favourite competitive events like 3 on 3 basketball, beach volleyball, ultimate frisbee, 3 on 3 soccer, tandem canoe and, brand new, Summerfest's own version of the amazing race—come cheer on your favourite team! Looking to learn something new and interact with visiting performers? Attend a workshop! You can learn to step dance, learn a fiddle tune, learn to hand drum, learn about writing musical theatre, learn to play ukulele, learn about magic and science tricks, work on your improv skills, or juggle and use a yoyo like a pro If all these events and visiting all the artisans, commercial vendors and community groups in our expanded Food & Artisans Village makes you hungry, then Summerfest has something new for you, too! There will be more food vendors, including Summerfest's own Nosh Pit, and a tapas-style restaurant will be operating out of the Yacht Club, offering weekend breakfast/brunch until 12:30 pm, and dinner Friday and Saturday. Summerfest cannot come into existence every two years without the dedication and support of countless volunteers. We consider ourselves extremely lucky to be able to put on this festival in such a beautiful town, on the banks of the gorgeous Ottawa River, and with such unconditional community support. To every one of our volunteers—thank you. If you like what you see at Summerfest and you would like to help out in any way, feel free to approach a Summerfest committee member this weekend, or any time. And please feel especially invited to help us clean up on Monday morning, starting at 9 am! We hope you enjoy what we have created for you—have a fun, happy and safe Summerfest! Summerfest 2014 wristbands are sponsored by Jp2g Consultants Inc Going Green This year, in an effort to reduce our recyclable waste handling and generation of non-recyclable waste, we are using cans for beer at our beer garden and bar locations. We are also increasing our use of recycling bins to ensure that recyclables are properly sorted and that minimal recyclables are placed in the garbage. Our Green Team meets each morning to make sure that the Summerfest area is clean. Our post-Summerfest Monday clean-up is a huge task even for all our regular dedicated volunteers. The Summerfest committee encourages anyone to come Monday morning with a rake and gloves, and we will find something cleany-uppy for you to do! The most important part of Summerfest Going Green involves you. Please do your part by using the recycling and waste bins correctly, and if you spy that something is amiss or that some people have horrible aim, especially later in the evenings, then please consider placing an extra bit or two you find on the grass into the proper bin. Summerfest always seeks to give back to the community, and by helping us go green, we can give back to the planet as well. Activity Passport (NEW) Participate in an activity passport challenge during Summerfest—a new activity for everyone at Summerfest! Funny, clever and with incredibly catchy and memorable tunes to back up their cutting wit and quirky humour, the Worms have been called “Canada's secret weapon number one” by VH1.com and have worked with artists ranging from the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra to actors Nathan Filion and Ed Cavanagh. The Worms have made numerous appearances in Deep River and the Valley including several at Summerfest, and are always wildly entertaining and massively popular. This year should be no exception. Based on the TV show, Summerfest's own Amazing Race will have teams of two racing through Deep River to complete a series of challenges. Each team will receive clues leading to various Summerfest venue locations where they will have to complete a challenge before receiving their next clue. Challenges may be physical, artistic, intellectual, or just plain silly! The first team back to the finish with the best time wins. This event is geared toward adults, but ages 16+ may participate (age 12-15 may participate if their teammate is an adult). Preregistration is required at the ICA office. Beach Volleyball Tournament Lamure Beach Sunday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Our biennial Beach Volleyball Tournament is one of Summerfest's signature events and a fantastic celebration of summer in Deep River. Enter your own team or just come out to watch all the digs, dives and last minute saves at Lamure Beach. There will be divisions: competitive and recreational. This event is the perfect way to enjoy the summer sunshine and cheer on your friends and family with four courts of spectacular beach volleyball action. 14 Canadian Raptor Conservancy: Birds of Prey Main Campus Saturday & Sunday 11:00 AM – 3:30 PM The Canadian Raptor Conservancy will once again bring their awe-inspiring and educational demonstration of such spectacular birds of prey as the bald eagle, harris hawk, great horned owl, barn owl, golden eagle and turkey vulture. This is an amazing opportunity to get up close with some of Canada's most majestic creatures while learning fascinating facts from The Canadian Raptor Conservancy demonstrators, who reach over one million people each year. A fun and fascinating experience for all ages. Company of Fools Performance Town of Deep River Yacht Club Saturday 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM Workshop Town of Deep River Yacht Club Saturday 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM Summerfest is thrilled to once again be hosting A Company of Fools, Ottawa's only professional outdoor Shakespeare theatre group. Fools' productions combine physical theatre techniques of clown, mask, and puppetry with classical text, making Shakespeare fun and accessible to all ages! This festival the Fools are presenting As You Like It, directed by Scott Florence , and starring Catriona Leger, Matthew J. Lundvall, Kate McArthur, Geoff McBride, and Katie Ryerson in a plethora of roles and lightning quick costume changes. As You Like It is the story of Rosalind. She's the girl who becomes the boy to get the boy who wants the girl. Sound confusing? No more so than your average love affair! Love and Romance are equal parts celebrated and skewered in this timeless tale of a woman disguised to win her love. 15 Cobra du Mandingue Sponsor: Steps Count & THEOP DJ Colour Wolf Main Stage Sunday 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM Main Stage Friday 10:30 PM – 11:30 PM A group from the Ottawa region inspired by West-African rhythms, particulary from GuineaConakry, Cobra du Mandingue is composed of Africans and Canadians - men and women, dancers and drummers – who are brought together by the same passion. A group who walked together along the paths of Guinea, it will bring its energy to you with different traditional instruments, not to mention the visual dimension of the choreography and their traditional costumes. Be prepared for an unforgettable experience! Their performance is sponsored by Steps Count/THEOP. Colour Wolf, raised by humans in Deep River who named him James Jones, has been “putting the two in 'two step', the shake in 'shake your booty', the unusual in 'it's not unusual' and the parsley in 'parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme' since 2009”. Colour Wolf spent 3 years in Taiwan cutting his teeth and making a name for himself. Workshop Science Fair Main Stage Hex Tent Sunday 11:00 AM – 11:30 AM AECL New Stage 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM Main Stage Hex Tent Sunday 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM The Deep River Science Academy (DRSA) is a not-for-profit organization providing science enrichment to high school students to encourage them to pursue careers in science and engineering. Kids will love dressing up in their favourite costumes or just some fancy clothes to take part in Summerfest's very own parade. Parents and relatives will love the opportunity to come out and make some lasting memories on the Summerfest weekend. Come at 5:30 PM to the field beside Giant Tiger, to help Katja paint her Parade Pony! Deep River Science Academy (DRSA) During this time, he also DJed at parties, festivals and in night clubs. More recently he's been applying his 'skills' on western Canadian FM radio airwaves. His weekly show runs at 5pm EST and can be streamed on www.peacefm.ca. For better or worse, his mix of contemporary dance, funky soul and anything bizarre has earned him a reputation as a perennially fresh disk jockey. Food Court Main Entrance Thursday 5pm-12:30AM Friday, Saturday & Sunday 10:00 AM – 12:30 AM Summerfest will be offering more food choices than ever before at Summerfest. The Food & Artisans Village will feature Beaver Tails, the Snack Shack, DB Kettle Corn, Santa Fe and Tim Hortons Coldstone Ice Cream. Hand Drumming Workshop Town of Deep River Yacht Club Saturday 11:00 AM – 12:15 PM Since the age of 15, Danno O'Shea has been bringing his drum beats to various stages across Canada and around the world. An accomplished drummer, music composer/contractor, clinician and teacher, he will be bringing his world to Summerfest to not only teach you how to play hand drums, but also how to “jam”; what to do, what not to do, what to listen for, etc… Contrary to what you might expect, Danny finds inspiration in the beats created by top DJ artists and hip hop artists. He studied at Humber College, but knows the stage is his true home. He will also be performing with Searson on the Main Stage on Saturday afternoon. 17 Majinx Main Stage Sunday 11:45 AM – 1:45 PM What's better than a festival with plenty of awesome music and events? A festival with magic and illusions! Join this talented duo as they put on one of the most colourful and exciting magic shows in the magic industry! Loved by critics, Majinx is sure to blow you away with not only illusions, but also self-composed music. Let yourself be amazed at the artistry and wonder created by the unbelievable. Harmonious Pigs Town of Deep River Yacht Club Saturday 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM A chamber ensemble of three principal musicians from the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra: Shauna McDonald, clarinet; Susan Morris, oboe; Benjamin Glossop, bassoon. You will hear a wide variety of musical delights from the 18th to the 20th centuries, including works by Vivaldi, Devienne, Percy Grainger, and Pete Seeger. Horsing Around with Katja MHS Reunion AECL New Stage Saturday 11:00 AM – 11:45 AM Sunday 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM Summerfest invites you to revisit those high school memories at the various reunions hosted at the Yacht and Tennis Club. With events starting Friday night, there will be opportunities for MHS alumni of every era to reconnect with old classmates, reminisce about old times, and celebrate the amazing achievements of MHS students and alumni over the years. Come see who is hiding in the crowd, bring your old photos, and check out the retrospective slide show Strength is liberty. This is the motto that Katja Fritzsche lives by when it comes to training horses. Join her every weekend morning as she demonstrates a different way of interacting with these majestic creatures. Katja will show her audiences how horsemanship doesn't have to be all about competition. When you take away the seriousness from traditional horse-riding and it is no longer about winning trophies, it can become an incredibly fun and fulfilling activity, both for the rider and for the horse. Look for Katja on Thursday and Friday, too! Town of Deep River Yacht Club Friday, 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM Saturday 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM 18 It Came from Deep River AECL New Stage Power Hour Flower Hour Saturday 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM Sunday 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM It Came from Deep River started at Summerfest 1996 as “an uncensored, unadjudicated, auditory showcase of local musical talent and guts”. Since then, this 'participation-performance' event has provided opportunities for over 100 local or ex-local performers to gain live stage experience, try something new artistically or get back into performing after a long break. There have been songwriting competitions, assigned covers (Black Flag : TV Party), What's That Coming from Deep River, 2 Songs Came From Deep River, Cover Band Scramble and other incarnations. This Summerfest, ICFDR is coagulating into two distinct life forms: ICFDR Power Hour The ICFDR Power Hour is based on Much Music's namesake—an hour of hard and heavy metal music. Two of Deep River's heavier genre bands will be showcasing their skills. ICFDR Flower Hour The ICFDR Flower Hour serves as a contrast to its sister show. The Flower Hour will be an opportunity for performers with (relatively) softer sounds to delight their audiences with less of an 'in-your-face' approach to musical expression. For more information on local performers, check out our special Summerfest entertainment supplement, available at local performer stages, including the Big Shiny Windows Saturday Night Main Stage lineup! ICFD Miss Polygamy Main Stage Friday 9:15 PM – 9:45 PM Dirty indie rock with a textured folky elegance. Miss Polygamy's eclectic hybrid of multiple genres has a modern feel fueled by a contemporary throwback. Their energetic live shows have landed them several major festivals and opening slots for Yukon Blonde, Alice in Chains and Bend Sinister. The success from last year's debut release, One Night Stand, led to several sold out shows, radio play and a closing day performance on the main stage at RBC Bank Bluesfest. With a showcase at this year's Canadian Music Week already under their belt, along with summer tour plans and upcoming appearances at Kitchissippi Music Festival and Summerfest, Miss Polygamy hopes to expand their ever-growing loyal fanbase. 19 Mike McCormick Master of Ceremonies All Weekend Long Mike McCormick (M.Sc. '92, Queen's) is one of the founding members of the Arrogant Worms, Canada's best-known musical comedy group and a Summerfest favourite. He is an accomplished musician and songwriter as well as a mediocre golfer and tennis player. He has lived in Greater Madawaska for longer than it has been called Greater Madawaska and often pines for the days when it could simply be called Bagot, Brougham and Blythfield. Besides driving his 2 kids around and performing with the Worms, Mike can also be seen monthly at the Neat Cafe in Burnstown as the host of "Soundcheck". Much Video Dance Town Hall Parking Lot Friday 10:00 PM – 1:00 AM The Much Video Dance returns once again this year, bringing all your favourite music videos to their massive screens at the town hall parking lot. A great opportunity to do some partying beyond the main stage area, the Much Video Dance is sure to be one of the most popular events at this year's Summerfest. With the Much DJs taking requests and giving out prizes all night long, this will be an exciting event to not miss! Shèmce Main Stage Friday 11:30 PM – 1:00 AM Supported by White Raver Rafting, Daily Beat, YourEDM and EDMTunes, Shèmce has quickly made big waves in the online EDM community over the course of 2013. With a residency at one of Canada's biggest nightclubs performing as “Dave Joseph", Shèmce's upbeat, energetic and versatile productions are poised to make even bigger waves in 2014 with a number of knockout remixes and an original EP in the works. 20 Peterborough Planetarium Saturday & Sunday 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM, 1:30 PM – 5:00 PM Join Peter McMahon as he takes his audience through a journey across the stars - in the Peterborough Travelling Planetarium, sponsored by the Canadian Nuclear Society. Peter is an award-winning science journalist who has worked for CTV News (where he currently serves as a TV science commentator), Discovery Channel, and written for MSN.ca, The Toronto Star, CAA online, and Frommer's Travel. He will be presenting a variety of shows about space, including “Tour of the Universe”, “Mission to Mars: 2025”, “Viking stars and Sky Sasquatches: Constellations from around the world”, and “What if? Cosmic questions from black holes to life on other planets”. Offroad Main Stage Performance CD Release Thursday 11:15 PM – 12:30 PM Sunday 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM Pat Degagne (Lead Vocal & Rhythm Guitar) and Colin Baird (Backup Vocal & Lead Guitar) started Ofrroad in 2004. The intent was to create a country and rock cover band that would play at local bars and private parties. From its very first performance, the band became a hit! In 2010, Offroad underwent a transformation acquiring Eric Degagne (backup vocal & keys), Steve Panke (backup vocal & bass) and Tom Martel (drums). The band now performs at festivals and concerts, up and down the Ottawa Valley, through to North Bay and has performed with various celebrity musicians. Special for this year, Summerfest is pleased to announce that in addition to bringing you your favourite high-energy dancing music, Offroad will be celebrating the release of their self-titled first CD with a performance of original music from the CD on Sunday afternoon! With help from Johnny Reid's old bandmates, who played on the CD, this promises to be a unique Offroad performance—not to be missed! Roaming Horde Everywhere All Weekend Long They're here, they're there, they're everywhere! Join street performers Billions Cobra, Kate Mior, Mike McCormick, and Ken Ramsden as they form this year's beloved roaming entertainers. For more than a decade, Billions Cobra has been thrilling audiences all over the world. He has made more than fifteen TV appearances including a visit to the Ellen Degeneres Show where he balanced a running lawnmower on his face! Kate Mior has brought her miming and living statue acts all over the globe, from the US, to Europe and Asia, performing with professional circuses or touring as a solo performer. Mike McCormick is one of the founding members of the Arrogant Worms, Canada's best-known musical comedy group. He is an accomplished musician and songwriter and will be MC'ing all through Summerfest. Ken Ramsden, known for decades as the leader of Reverend Ken and the Lost Followers, among many other groups, rounds out the horde with his ability to roam far and wide and engage anyone in conversation. Be sure not to miss Summerfest's signature roaming entertainers! 21 That's Amore The songs of the Italian-American crooner touch a place in the hearts of every generation. They have created a musical legacy that Town of Deep River Yacht Club endures through the decades and continues now into the 21st century. Sunday 3:45 PM – 4:45 PM Bass Alex Fleuriau Chateau and Tenor Christopher Coyea, accompanied by pianist Christopher Cennon and drummer James MacKenzie, will present music made famous by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Perry Como, Vic Damone, Tony Bennett, Jerry Vale and Al Martino. Christopher Coyea has performed as a member of the Canadian Opera company ensemble and has won awards at the prestigious Lauritz Melchior Heldentenor Competition in New York City, while Alex Fleuriau Chateau has appeared in productions by Opera Lyra Ottawa and spent two years as the house bass for Theatre Regensburg in Germany. "Music, “said Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, “is the universal language of mankind" - If this is true, then the song sung by the Italian-American crooner is the universal language of love. Veda Hille: Performance & Thoughts on Musical Theatre Town of Deep River Yacht club Sunday Performance 1:15 PM – 2:15 PM Workshop 2:15 PM – 3:15 PM (following a short break) Born August 11, 1968 into a nice family in Vancouver, Canada, Veda started playing piano in 1974. Childhood interests included plants, books, microscopes, science fiction, and psychiatry. She attended art college in the late 80s and started writing music. Now, Veda makes records, writes musical theatre, scores films, teaches songwriting, tours, and generally keeps busy. She will show you her world of musical theatre, which includes works such as Peter Panties (based on Peter Pan) and Do You Want What I Have Got? (A Craigslist Cantata), co-written with Bill Richardson. Interested in how she does it? Join her after her performance as she talks to her audience about the process behind musical theatre writing. 22 James Main Stage Sunday 8:15 PM Hill Part of the James Hickey Realty Sunday Night Linenup A native of Langley, British Columbia, James Hill began playing the ukulele through an elementary school music program and was immediately hooked. Since then, he has played in numerous international and Canadian festivals and has released five albums including True Love Don't Weep in 2009, a collaboration with Canadian cellist Anne Janelle, which won Traditional Album of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Hill's versatility as a musician is demonstrated in the breadth of his repertoire. Not limited to traditional ukulele folk, his live shows have included forays into hip-hop influenced, beat-driven ukulele “sound sculptures”, and his most recent record, Man With a Love Song, spans soulful big-band jazz, barrelhouse-bluegrass and spoken-word-andjunkyard-percussion. Across these varying styles, the honest thoughtfulness and “hard-won wisdom” in Hill's lyrics prove him to be a powerful new voice in Canadian songwriting. Called “a dazzling live performer” and “utterly world-class in every respect”, Hill's lyrical mastery, his virtuosity on an often under-respected instrument, and his low-key sense of humour is a powerful combination that has garnered fans worldwide. Folk Radio UK has described his live performances as “equal parts disarming, captivating and mind-boggling”. In other words, just right for Summerfest! The Abrams Brothers Main Stage Sunday 1:30 PM Canadian troubadours The Abrams Brothers grew up playing music in an atmosphere where family musical collaborations were practically tradition. John and James Abrams have been on stage in the family business since they were 7 and 10 years old, and have been performing their seamless fusion of bluegrass, country and folk-rock together as The Abrams Brothers for over ten years. Named Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2005 Canadian Bluegrass Music Awards, The Abrams Brothers have been a constant on the Canadian festival circuit and their performance at Summerfest is not to be missed. 23 Searson Main Stage Saturday 3:30 PM Sisters Erin and Colleen Searson have been touring their original style of high energy fiddling, passionate vocals, and step dancing in Canada and internationally for well over a decade. Natives of the Ottawa Valley, Erin and Colleen were immersed in the Ottawa Valley musical tradition from a young age, studying music and step dancing, and performing and competing at local competitions. Their sound combines Ottawa Valley style with Celtic, East Coast and Scottish influences, and the sisters are joined for performances by Danno O'Shea on percussion and Fraser Gauthier on bass/guitar. Searson has enthralled Summerfest audiences numerous times at previous festivals and returns this year for another energetic and mesmerizing performance. Runaway Angel Main Stage Thursday 9:45PM Rising country artist and long-time Summerfest performer Ann Chaplin, along with fellow Runaway Angels Cadence Grace and Stacey Zegers, will be gracing our stage on Thursday, July 31st, our opening night! The group's vocal sound sets them above the crowd, and their compelling songwriting has already led to an ever-increasing string of offers for bigger and bigger shows. Summerfest is lucky to have Runaway Angel drop by for a visit, on their way to Boots & Hearts and the big time! 24 Mounties Main Stage Sunday 11:30 PM Part of the James Hickey Realty Sunday Night Linenup It began as a group hug in 2009, evolved into a spectacular improvised two-week recording session three years later, and is now unofficially dubbed Canada's newest musical supergroup. Composed of Canadian alternative-rock royalty, Hawksley Workman, Ryan Dahle, Steve Bays, and joined at Summerfest by Parker Bossley on bass, Mounties has been thrilling audiences coast-to-coast with their groovy 80s-laced fuzzed-out grunge synth-pop enthusiasm and is set to take on the Summerfest Main Stage in a highly anticipated Sunday night concert! Their debut album, released to critical acclaim in March of this year, has been described as a “Lamborghini ride through outer space on warp speed with a glass of wine in hand and headphones on” (SouthernSouls). If that description doesn't draw you in, consider the talent and experience that the trio shares; Workman, Dahle and Bays have all earned their place amongst Canada's foremost musicians through their work with various solo and collaborative musical projects, including Hot Hot Heat and Age of Electric, and are each sought-after producers in their own right. The recent winners of the SiriusXM 2014 Indie Award for Emerging Artist of the Year and long-listed for a 2014 Polaris Prize, Mounties has been causing some serious buzz. Maybe it's the improvisational yet addictively catchy quality of their songs, all of which begin from the ground up in jam sessions, the group's preferred means of collaboration. Or maybe it's their spectacularly energized live shows, which have been known to send crowds “into fits,” and demonstrate that this is a group who is genuinely excited to share their newest musical project. Either way, Mounties' Sunday night show promises to be an exhilarating ride; the perfect match for capping off another fantastic Summerfest weekend. 25 A-Z Listings 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament Town Hall Parking Lot, Rain Location: Mackenzie Community School Gym Saturday 10:30 AM – 3:30 PM Returning this year, don't miss out on this exciting tournament!
