Providing differentiated, guest-centric services
for hotels and cruise ships
ENSURE YOUR HOTELS OR
CRUISE SHIPS STAND OUT
In an increasingly competitive market, you’ve got to do everything you can to
make your properties stand out so you can attract and retain guests, and generate
new revenue. And you’ve got to do this while keeping a tight rein on expenses.
Advanced communications applications and services that address guest expectations
and improve staff and back-office efficiency can help you maintain that balance.
Configured properly, an integrated communications infrastructure is just as important
to your ability to attract guests as anything else you have in-room and on the
property. It can be one of your most strategic competitive assets.
Fortunately, cost-effective, proven technologies exist that enable you to anticipate,
meet and exceed guest expectations, and provide your employees with the tools
to be more efficient and productive. By investing in new IP technologies today
or leveraging your existing infrastructure to deliver triple play IP-based services,
you can differentiate your hotel or cruise ship from the competition, enhance
the loyalty of your customers, and position your facility for the future. Integrated
properly, these technologies give you a competitive advantage that can help you
keep your suites full and your business profitable.
As a leader in fixed, mobile, and converged broadband access, carrier communications
and enterprise communications, Alcatel-Lucent offers the most integrated and
complete solutions designed specifically for the hospitality industry. Unlike
mismatched point options, Alcatel-Lucent converged communications networks,
enhanced applications and advanced services work together to address guest and
operational requirements. They provide everything hotels and cruise ships need
to create an efficient, always-on, secure, end-to-end, triple play information and
communication system over any infrastructure to improve the guest experience
and optimize operations.
In addition, Alcatel-Lucent offers hosted and managed infrastructures, giving
operators the option of owning and managing the network, or partnering with
Alcatel-Lucent or a service provider to create and manage it on their behalf.

IMPROVE THE
GUEST EXPERIENCE
You want to ensure that your existing guests are well served, so
they’ll return. At the same time, you need to grow your business
by attracting new guests. To achieve both objectives, you must
offer an experience that meets and exceeds expectations.
Today’s guests arrive at a hotel with devices that can surf the
Web, send text messages, exchange Instant Messaging (IM),
communicate via e-mail, and place voice calls. They want to connect
their mobile devices (iPod, iPhone, MP3 players, etc.) to play
music, take photos and play videos. Younger guests — those
that are part of Generation Y — will have one device that can
do it all and enable contactless payment, which can be used at
self-service kiosks.
An integrated, end-to-end, IP-based communications solution
customized by Alcatel-Lucent leverages advanced IP-based
wired and wireless voice, wired and wireless high-speed Internet
access (HSIA), video on demand (VoD), and IP television (IPTV)
to efficiently deliver advanced, guest-centric services over any
infrastructure. It allows you to meet and exceed expectations by
delivering a complete guest experience and create a “wow” factor
that makes a good impression, from the initial reservation call
right through to check-out.

PAMPER ISABELLE NOW AND
YOU ’LL SEE HER AGAIN
Isabelle has just checked in to the hotel after
a long flight. She has 5 hours to recover
before she needs to head out to a meeting.
When she arrives at the front desk, the
staff set up a “do not disturb” notice and
a wake-up call for her room. The interface
for her in-room services is switched over
to French, so she doesn’t have to struggle
with a second language. And she’s handed
a wireless handset that is pre-programmed
with the services the hotel staff think
Isabelle is most likely to use. As Isabelle
waits for the elevator, she can contact
laundry services to have her suit picked
up and pressed. When Isabelle gets to her
room, she uses the picture menu on her TV
to select a snack. With the hotel’s mobile
communications system, staff gets her
orders right away so she’s served quickly.
Ensure positive first impressions
 Whether the caller is checking rates and availability, or
booking a room, a suite or an entire conference, the service
center capabilities of the Alcatel-Lucent OmniGenesys™
Contact Center ensure each call is quickly routed to the
most appropriate agent in the guest’s preferred language.
 At check-in, front desk staff can take care of all your
guests’ needs. The Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX™ Enterprise
Communication Server integrates with your hotel applications so you can set up voice mail, language preferences,
mobility options and payment options.
 Because guests live in an “always-on” world, an advanced
communications infrastructure can leverage the networking
services guests are accustomed to and establish a constant
link with returning guests before, during and after their
stay. In this way, operators exceed expectations well
before guests enter the lobby and well after they have
checked out.
Provide advanced entertainment and
information services
 In-room entertainment and communications applications
can be seamlessly integrated and customized based on
individual guest preferences. Previously separate applications
that control telephone calls, wired and wireless HSIA,
television entertainment, TV-based hotel services, and
even room comfort can all be easily controlled with a
single interface available either on the in-room TV or on
an Alcatel-Lucent IP Touch™ Phone. These phones include
a screen that can be pre-programmed with a graphical
selection of hospitality services, such as restaurant hours,
real-time weather reports, tourist and visitor information
and flight schedules.
 The Alcatel-Lucent Hotel InfoService Suite is a collection
of phone-driven applications designed to take the guest
experience to the next level. Through cutting-edge video,
camera and Internet technologies, these applications
transform each room’s phone into an information portal
and window into the entire hotel. And through automation,
guests’ needs are addressed in advance, giving pampering
a whole new dimension. What’s more, the applications
make using the phone a much more visual, interactive
experience through video and by displaying photographs
of hotel services, such as Front Desk, Concierge, Bellman
and Wake-up Call. Not only does this modernize the overall
look and feel of the phones, it enhances your hotel’s image
and atmosphere.
 By installing a web camera at a guest room door and using
the Door CAM XML application on an IP Touch Phone,
hotels can allow guests to see who is at their door at any
time of the day or night, thereby increasing guest security
and peace of mind. The same XML application can be used
by your security team to view other web cameras positioned
throughout the property or on remote properties.
 HSIA is an essential service these days. You can implement
this capability using either an Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch™
LAN Switch or an Alcatel-Lucent broadband access solution
that takes advantage of DSL technology. Our experts will
help you determine which solution best suits your needs.

With 80 Villages on five continents and a cruise ship, the
Club Med 2, Club Méditerranée is the worldwide leader
in all-inclusive holidays. To create a dynamic, integrated
communications network for guests and employees,
Club Med chose a multi-phase managed services solution
from Alcatel-Lucent built around the Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX
Enterprise Communication Server. The solution will provide
value-added guest services, such as in-room Wi-Fi®, and
television-based softphones and multimedia services.
Provide advanced communications services
 For voice services, you can provide in-room digital and
VoIP phone services using a range of IP handsets, or leverage
existing analog equipment. With Alcatel-Lucent support
for Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), your guests can have
cost-effective access to features such as VoIP, instant
messaging, conference calls and call forwarding.
 When they’re not in their rooms, guests can also access
their in-room phone features, such as voice mail, from any
house phone within the complex or ship through capabilities
enabled by the OmniPCX Enterprise Communication Server.
 Guests can also access the full range of voice and data
services as they roam with Alcatel Lucent IP Touch wireless
handsets supported by an Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess™
Wireless LAN Switch.

Alcatel-Lucent Solutions for Hospitality
“We were looking for a long-term partner,
not just an immediate equipment provider.
We chose Alcatel-Lucent for its broad
product line, industry expertise and
global presence. We are confident that
Alcatel-Lucent understands our objectives
and will work with us to achieve our
vision to become the worldwide specialist
of all-inclusive, upscale, friendly and
multicultural vacations.”
Michel Wolfovski, Executive Vice President and
Chief Financial Officer of Club Med
Offer a range of business services
 Business guests will appreciate the many advanced features
you can offer, including a direct-dial telephone number
(for both dialing in and dialing out without operator
assistance), voice mail and call forwarding, as well as
“do not disturb” and “wake up” features, all made
possible through the Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Enterprise
Communication Server.
 Executive guests will appreciate the wireless voice and
data capabilities available through the Alcatel-Lucent
OmniTouch™ 8622 My Cellular Extension application.
Even when they are off the hotel premises, they’ll have
full access to hotel staff and services through their
mobile phones.
CREATE
NEW REVENUE
OPPORTUNITIES
 Business services can be further enhanced with the
Alcatel-Lucent OmniTouch 8660 My Teamwork™
Conferencing and Collaboration suite, which offers
collaboration tools that allow users to access instant
messaging and audio conferencing, virtual conference
rooms, and recording options, as well as application-sharing
and video-conferencing features via PC, smartphone or PDA.
Some technological developments, such as mobile phones,
have led to declining revenues for hotel operators in
formerly lucrative areas. With an integrated, end-to-end,
IP-based communications solution customized by
Alcatel-Lucent to work efficiently over any infrastructure,
you can enhance profitability by managing and controlling
your own HSIA, VoD, IPTV, and Skype™ VoIP services
that enable new revenue streams. And to increase the
likelihood that a guest will access these new services,
you’ll be able to customize them to suit the guest.
For its first hotel, Rixos Sungate began looking for a
system that uses advanced technology, has the ability
to completely satisfy hotel applications, ensures seamless
voice and data communication over fiber optic cables
instead of copper, and can be run from a single center.
Rixos Sungate chose an Alcatel-Lucent solution.
 Customizable, in-room services allow you to target a
guest’s known preferences. For example, if the guest
has shown a weakness for 11:00 p.m. snacks, you can
program the television to run a late-night ad promoting
the same kind of snacks the guest has ordered in the
past. If the guest has used your spa facilities on previous
visits, the Alcatel-Lucent IP Touch telephone can be
pre-programmed with a series of advertisements
promoting spa services.
“We were establishing a new facility
and looking for a completely integrated
solution. We wanted to have a flexible
and dynamic structure where IT and
voice communication engage.”
 Tailored VoD and online gaming services increase the
likelihood that guests take advantage of your in-room
services. For example, a family is more likely to be
interested in a selection of movies geared to children
than an adult entertainment package.

 Digital TV allows travelers to program TV viewing around
their hectic schedules. Guests can record shows, watch
them when they want and even pause their favorite show
when room service is delivered or their phone rings.
looking for more freedom and flexibility. One-touch
wireless access to key hotel personnel and services can
be particularly appealing to business guests or to a tour
leader in charge of a group of guests.
 Digital music and radio service may be the feature that
entices a guest to opt for a premium-priced room. You
can provide access to the guest’s home radio station
through a digital service, or provide integration with their
iPod or other mobile digital device for a personalized
in-room stereo system.
 One-touch access to VoIP can encourage guests to use hotel
phones once again. The Alcatel-Lucent VoIP Gateway for
Skype gives guests access to their Skype account through
an Alcatel-Lucent IP Touch phone and on the TV. Providing
easy access to Skype helps your guests control their communications costs — and demonstrates your commitment
to creating a home away from home.
 Location-based advertising services can be integrated into
your network to deliver advertisements for hotel dining,
shopping and entertainment offerings directly to a guest’s
smartphone when they are in the vicinity of key venues.
 Wireless high-speed Internet connectivity and wireless
phones can be offered as a premium service above and
beyond standard, in-room services for business travelers
Figure 2 lists just some of the integrated IPTV and
communications-based services and entertainment options
that can be customized by Alcatel-Lucent to fit your
specific needs.

OPTIMIZE HOTEL
OPERATIONS
Integrated communications services ensure that employees can
be reached quickly by other employees and guests can access
service staff, even when that staff is on the move within the
hotel (concierge, cleaning, security, room service, for example).
A real-time, integrated system also ensures that reservations
staff have the information they need at their fingertips to handle
guest calls.
Alcatel-Lucent works with you to develop a customized solution
for your operations communications needs that enables a variety
of IP-based services over any infrastructure — CAT3, coaxial
cable, Ethernet/fiber. With a converged, IP-based solution you
will have a universal view of all systems, your operations staff
will be more responsive to guests, your systems will be more
efficient, and your overall operations costs will be lower.
Provide each employee with the right tools for the job
Alcatel-Lucent uses a role-based communications approach that
allows you to create customized sets of communications tools,
services and devices focused on the real needs of specific types
of users.
With this approach, IT staff need only update and maintain
communications tools for a small number of standardized user
profiles, rather than a customized setup for each employee. Your
employees can probably be grouped into three categories:
 Office workers, such as front-desk, call center and accounting
staff, who require primarily wireline phones, unified communications and contact center services so they can respond to
guests’ needs in real time
 On-site roamers, such as maintenance and back-office staff,
who require mobile voice and data services
 Executives, such as hotel managers, who require access to the
company’s systems beyond the confines of the hotel or ship
Claude is the maintenance manager at
a large, five-star hotel. Because he and
his staff are always on the go, hotel
management has provided them with
Alcatel-Lucent IP wireless phones. Claude
has pre-programmed his phone to provide
him with one-touch access to each of the
key service groups within the hotel, so he
can quickly connect with his colleagues to
resolve problems. When a call comes in
that the safe in room 209 is not working,
he knows it’s probably because it needs
a new battery. He sends a broadcast
message to all members of his staff to
quickly locate the closest repair person. He
also checks the hotel inventory to ensure
that a replacement battery is available. In
no time, someone is heading to the guest’s
room with a new battery. And Claude has
also advised the front desk about what’s
happening, so they can let the guest know
that help is on the way.

Enable anytime, anywhere communications
Alcatel-Lucent has solutions that will increase your staff’s
efficiency and productivity, whatever their role.
 Conferencing and collaboration capabilities allow staff to
communicate wherever they are, using any device, inside or
outside your establishment. Alcatel-Lucent OmniTouch 8400
Instant Communications Suite for Enterprise applications,
such as Alcatel-Lucent OmniTouch 8660 My Teamwork and
Alcatel-Lucent OmniTouch 8600 My Instant Communicator,
offer voice, web, video and secure instant messaging tools
so customer-facing staff can easily get the latest information
on hotel services, such as wait times at the restaurant or
special packages.
 You can quickly and efficiently call staff at several locations
to a meeting using the Alcatel-Lucent OmniTouch 8670
Automated Message Delivery System. The same message
broadcasting system can be used by staff to advise
participants in a tour that the bus has arrived or to notify
conference participants that lunch is served.
 You can ensure employees always have the complete
picture by integrating wired or wireless Alcatel-Lucent
IP Phones and Wi-Fi-enabled PDAs with your existing hotel
management systems. Wireless connectivity can be provided
by strategically locating Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess
Wireless LAN access points throughout the hotel complex
or cruise ship.
 Management and mobile employees can stay connected
by transforming their mobile phone into a corporate phone
with Alcatel-Lucent OmniTouch 8622 My Cellular Extension.
Staff have full access to the corporate voice network and
corporate telephony services anytime, anywhere.
 Your communications system can be fully integrated with
other hotel applications, such as the property management
system, using the Alcatel-Lucent Hospitality Link.

With multiple locations, multiple networks, and
multiple systems, Hampshire Hotels & Resorts wanted to
streamline and centralize its disparate communications
networks into one global network for all properties, and
push the boundaries of typical communications solutions
to improve guest services and operations within each
individual hotel. Alcatel-Lucent proposed a two-layer,
wired and wireless networking solution customized
to address both requirements and built around the
Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch, Alcatel-Lucent OmniStack™
and OmniAccess product families, and the OmniPCX
Enterprise Communication Server.
“With Alcatel-Lucent, we’ve experienced a very collaborative relationship,
and they have incorporated our guests’
needs and the business requirements of
Hampshire Hotels & Resorts into the
solutions. Alcatel-Lucent’s commitment
to the hospitality industry has been
apparent from the start of the project.”
Jay Stein, Chief Operating Officer, Hampshire Hotels & Resorts
BUILD A RELIABLE AND SECURE
FOUNDATION FOR YOUR BUSINESS
Communications services are essential to the operation of your hotel or cruise ship.
Your guests rely on your services for everything from calling home to conducting
business and ordering dinner. Your staff depends on your communications system
to help them function as an efficient team, and to respond to guests’ needs. You
must also be confident that your data is secure and guests’ personal information
safeguarded. To offer your guests superior services and operate efficiently, you
need a solid foundation.
 Whether you operate a single hotel, a palatial spa spread over several kilometers,
hundreds of hotels around the globe, or a luxury cruise ship, there is an Alcatel-Lucent
OmniSwitch and Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess networking infrastructure product
to suit your needs.
 To provide in-room, broadband services to guests using the existing telephone
system’s copper wire, you can rely on the DSL capabilities in the Alcatel-Lucent
Broadband Access solution.
 For end-to-end security across your network and communications systems,
including features such as 802.1 authentication, voice and signaling encryption,
and intrusion detection and prevention, Alcatel-Lucent provides the Alcatel-Lucent
VPN Firewall Brick™ family of security appliances, IP Touch Encryption modules,
the Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess SafeGuard Appliance family, the Alcatel-Lucent
OmniVista™ 2500 SecureView ACL and the Alcatel-Lucent OmniVista 2500 NMS
Quarantine Manager.
Alcatel-Lucent Solutions for Hospitality

Easy, flexible management
Your entire communications system must be easy to manage
and update. The Alcatel-Lucent OmniVista 4760 Network
Management System simplifies administration by enabling
staff to manage multiple sites from a central location.
IT staff can take advantage of sophisticated, easy-to-use
tools that help with day-to-day operations, including:
 Automated adds, moves and changes
 Continuous monitoring of equipment and links, statistics
and traffic flows
 Automated reporting, diagnosis, and resolution of minor
problems and alarms
Staff can configure the system to generate alarms before a
situation becomes severe enough to disrupt service. With
this kind of preventative maintenance, your system will
never let you — or your guests — down.
Your communications system must also be fully integrated
with other hotel management applications and your
accounting system, so you can provide guests with accurate,
consolidated invoices in a timely fashion. Alcatel-Lucent
network management software is standards-based and open,
so it can be readily integrated with third-party vendor solutions.
The Alcatel-Lucent VitalSuite™ Performance Management
Software allows hotel IT teams to manage the network and
the applications on it to ensure they are always working
the way they are supposed to. It presents a single, real-time
view of your network and simplifies analysis and planning
with drill-down reports for every organizational level. In
addition, because it is a very open management tool that was
designed to interoperate with any type of device, application
and solution, VitalSuite can also manage and report on
third-party network elements, providing a holistic view of
network and application health.
