Feather® Autopsy, Trimming and Dissection Range
The Feather® Autopsy, Trimming and Dissection range is internationally renowned for its sharpness and versatility. The Autopsy Handle is autoclavable, easy to clean
and highly chemically resistant. The handle is reusable with a variety of interchangeable disposable stainless steel Autopsy Blades. There are also a number of reusable
Trimming Handles that can be used with the disposable Trimming Blades and these are available in right and left‑handed versions. The F‑80 Trimming Handle can be used
with Feather® Disposable Microtome Blades, converting these ultra‑sharp high quality blades to trimming tools. The Dissecting Handle, made from a special hard resin,
is also autoclavable and can hold two types of longlife ultra‑sharp disposable Dissecting Blades. The newly developed Feather® Safety Trimming System combines the
well respected Feather® Trimming Blades, with a new blade exchange system, which enables a simple, safe and fast change of blade. The blades are single packed with
a blade cover and therefore a direct contact with the Trimming Blade can be avoided. This protects the user from injury and infections. The ergonomically designed plastic
handle is heat resistent, autoclavable and easy to clean. The #22 Feather® brand scalpel blades are stainless steel, which provide a durable, precision edge. They are
packaged individually and are sterile to maximize their applications. Designed to be used with a #4 Stainless Steel contoured handle which accentuates proper feel and
dexterity. These blades are also available packaged with disposable, plastic handles. This is an excellent choice where isolation and disposal of the instrument is required
to eliminate cross contamination. Scalpel Blade #11 is available for microspecimen and dermopathology applications or where a smaller precision blade is preferred.

Scalpels and Handles
Scalpels such as the Round Tip Scalpel Blade are specially designed to reduce the real dangers associated with puncture wounds from sharp pointed blade ends. With the
Round Tip Scalpel Blade, it is virtually impossible to inflict a puncture wound. When used together with Cut Resistant or Safetyflex Gloves, staff will be significantly more
protected when carrying out cut‑up or dissection procedures. For added security, the Scalpel Blade Remover enables scalpel blades to be taken off the blade handles safely
and securely. The #22 Feather® brand scalpel blades are stainless steel, which provide a durable, precision edge. They are packaged individually and are sterile to maximize
their applications. These blades are also available packaged with disposable, plastic handles. This is an excellent choice where isolation and disposal of the instrument is

Feather Disposable Microtome Blades
The Feather Autopsy, Trimming and Dissection range is internationally renowned for its sharpness and versatility. Made from stainless steel, each blade is heat treated and
finely ground in three stages to produce a precise cutting edge. The blades are then specially coated to minimize friction and maximize blade longevity. A variety of blades
are available, each suited to a particular application or tissue type: Feather S35 – A low profile blade for all routine sectioning. Feather R35 – Enables easier ribboning.
Ideal for hard fibrous tissue. Feather N35 – Suitable for hard tissue and for thin sectioning. Feather A35 – For routine sectioning of soft and hard tissue. Also suited for
thinner sections. Feather S22 – For cutting soft tissue and obtaining extremely thin sections. Ideal for skin, lymph node and renal biopsies. Feather S35L – A longer 120 mm
version of the Feather S35 to facilitate the cutting of larger blocks normally on a sledge or sliding microtome. Feather S35LL – A longer 180 mm version of the Feather S35
to facilitate the cutting of very large blocks. A sliding microtome is required to use this blade. Feather C35 – A disposable carbon steel blade ideally suited for sectioning in
a cryostat. Able to shear very thin frozen sections. Feather S35 High Profile – Twice the depth of the Feather S35 (requiring a specific High Profile blade holder). Suitable for
all routine sectioning. With the exception of the C35 Blade, it is recommended to trim in all Feather microtome blades to improve blade longevity. During trimming‑in of the
blade, care must be taken not to damage the surface coating, as this can cause scoring. Available in packs of 50.

Biopsy Pads
Biopsy Pads are made from open‑celled foam, which allows fluids to transfer safely and thoroughly around tissue while holding the specimen securely. To prevent floating
and avoid artifacts, Biopsy Pads should be presaturated in fixative. The thin design helps eliminate excess pressure from being applied to unfixed specimens, reducing the
risk of tissue sticking to the pads or fibers coming apart during embedding. Available in white or blue foam, circular or rectangular. The thinner pads also allow for less fluid
carry‑over during processing.

Mesh Biopsy Bags
Manufactured from solvent resistant nylon, these Mesh Biopsy Bags are ideal for use in processing small biopsies. They provide excellent fluid exchange and maximum
tissue safety. The fixative and specimen can be poured into the bag which then filters the fixative and leaves the biopsies inside. The bag is then closed, placed inside a
cassette and processed as normal. After processing, the bag can be extracted and opened, allowing the specimen to be recovered and embedded in paraffin wax.

Paraplast®
Paraplast is recommended for general tissue embedding. It is composed of a refined mixture of highly purified paraffin containing plastic polymers of regulated molecular
weights. This supports improved tissue infiltration and superior quality sections with minimal compression. Paraplast gives brittle, difficult to section tissue an innate
elasticity, promoting wrinkle‑free sections. It has a melting point of 56° C.
Paraplast Plus is suggested for large tissue or tissue that may normally present infiltration issues. Paraplast Plus contains a small percentage of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO),
allowing accelerated tissue penetration. It has a melting point of 56° C.
Paraplast Xtra is recommended for lower temperature infiltration which aids in the prevention of tissue distortion. It is composed of a unique blend of low molecular weight
polymers and highly purified paraffins for compression resistance and ribbon continuity. Low viscosity permits complete infiltration of dense tissue. It has a melting point of
52° C.

Airchek® Badges
Airchek Badges provide an innovative, simple and effective system to monitor vapour levels. Standard badges are available for formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, xylene,
toleune, and isopropanol. The Airchek badges provide continuous sampling for personal monitoring and can give the measurements required under Government regulations.
The badges are simply clipped on to the technician’s clothing and a record is kept of name, location and time. One badge will provide continuous sampling over 8 hours and
a second badge can be used to supply information to analyse a 15-minute period during peak exposure. Both badges are then sent to Leica Microsystems to be forwarded
to an independent accredited laboratory for analysis. The analysis is performed using HPLC giving a formaldehyde sensitivity of 0.004 p.p.m. ± 19% at 2.00 p.p.m Once
the results are determined, the laboratory receives a report specifying the exposure per individual technician for the appropriate chemical. It also indicates the results in a
format which can be readily compared to the Workplace Exposure Limits.

D-Formalizer is a safe chemical treatment for neutralizing spent formalin. It leaves a clear solution, free of solids and aldehyde odor, that can be disposed of without
clogging the drains. Simply add one packet of D-Formalizer to a gallon of used formalin (or 4% glutaraldehyde) and agitate gently. After 15 minutes, the product can
be safely poured down the drain in compliance with local ordinances. The resulting solution will have a pH between 6 and 9 and will be free of polymer by-product. An

L’Absorbs®
L’Absorbs are a strong highly absorbent, lint‑free alternative to paper towels and gauze. The cloth‑like softness and lint‑free surface makes them ideal for use in cover
slipping and slide preparation. L’Absorbs are perfect for cleaning up all liquids but are specially suited to alcohol and xylene which evaporate upon use, allowing L’Absorbs
to be reused. L’Absorbs will readily soak up oils and liquid paraffin wax and can be used for various blotting techniques, from highly technical procedures to simple
applications such as drying a block from ice during microtomy. This product is one of the most versatile and useful in the laboratory. Available in two sizes; 15 x 15 cm for
cover‑slipping and 32 x 37 cm for general use; in cases of 600 or 1,200.

Alcohols/Acids
Acid Alcohol
Acid Alcohol is used in histology and cytology to remove excess staining and define nuclei following haematoxylin staining in the H&E and PAP methods. In order to produce
a good H&E stain with crisp nuclear detail, it is critical that certain Haematoxylins are differentiated correctly, making Acid Alcohol a highly effective solution. Available

Decalcifiers
Decalcifier System
Decalcifier I is a unique decalcifying solution that has the ability to fix and decalcify at the same time. Needle biopsies may be completely fixed and decalcified in one hour
or less. Small bone specimens and calcified arteries may be completely fixed and decalcified in approximately 2‑4 hours. It is recommend to use 20 times the volume of
the specimen. Following decalcification, the specimen is ready for processing without first having to wash. Tissues decalcified in this solution cut with ease and routine
H&E techniques produce excellent stained sections. Larger specimens, 3 to 5 millimeters thick, can immediately be placed in Decalcifier I to fix and initiate decalcification
overnight. The following morning, if the specimen is not yet decalcified, transfer it directly to Decalcifier II to complete demineralization that same day. The Surgipath
Decalcifier I‑II combination can save valuable time and more importantly, valuable specimens.

Clearene
Clearene is a selected blend of terpenes formulated specifically to replace xylene and toluene in histology and cytology laboratory procedures. It is less oily than other
solvent substitutes and therefore dries quickly and does not leave a residue. Clearene penetrates tissue rapidly without overhardening and is safe to use with all open and
closed system tissue processors. It is miscible with alcohols, paraffins and mounting media. It contains an antioxidant to prevent stain fading. Clearene is biodegradable
and offers the desirable characteristics of a good solvent but not the harmful drawbacks of aromatic hydrocarbons such as xylene and toluene‑based products.

FineFIX
FineFIX has been formulated as a formalin‑free, water‑based fixative for conventional and microwave enhanced fixation. This alternative fixative is ideal for routine
histological applications and molecular analysis. When diluted with ethanol, its patented formulation of low toxicity additives overcome the drawbacks usually associated
with the use of ethanol‑based fixatives. FineFIX provides optimal preservation of tissue antigens, nuclear and cytoplasmic morphology and reduced lysis of red blood cells
with preservation of the cytoplasmic membranes. By initiating earlier dehydration and fat extraction during fixation, FineFIX can reduce tissue processing times. Although
formalin‑fixed tissues are a huge source of nucleic acids for molecular biological studies, the formation of crosslinkages by formalin makes extraction difficult. Recovery of
RNA from tissue fixed in FineFIX has been shown to be greatly superior to that from snap frozen tissue as there is no cross‑linkage formation. The morphology of tissues
fixed in FineFIX, processed conventionally or by microwaves, is of such high quality that it poses no difficulty for diagnosis. Shrinkage and vacuolisation are reduced to
a fraction of that experienced with traditional ethanol fixation. Pyknotic nuclei are also absent. It is ideal for use with all routine and immunohistochemistry staining
techniques and reduces the need for aggressive epitope retrieval. FineFIX provides a real alternative for tissue fixation without all the hazards associated with formalin.
The Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) for FineFIX working solution is much higher than Formalin (see table), reducing the risks to laboratory staff from vapour exposure. As
an added benefit, FineFIX is delivered as a non‑hazardous water‑based concentrate negating the need for costly hazardous goods transport requirements. FineFix must be
diluted with ethanol to form the working solution.
