Artistic Director's Notes
Welcome to the beginning of a bright new Belfry
season – full of heart and laughter, new ideas and –
outstanding music! Music bookends this season
beautifully, starting with the legendary Big Mama
Thornton.
Please join me in welcoming the one and only Jackie
Richardson to the Belfry stage for the very first time.
Jackie is a force of nature, and one of Canada’s most
treasured performing artists. I am thrilled to introduce
her to all of you, and to have her experience the special
“I feel as though I’m being wrapped in a pair of arms”
relationship that happens when you stand on this stage
and share this audience.
Jackie Richardson is reason enough to come to the theatre. Big Mama and the music she
made give us a tale worth telling. So, here we go: embarking on a new journey, with a wide
array of stories and unique ways of looking at the world that are different from our own.
Welcome back to the Belfry!

relax, enjoy
When I was thirteen, feeling the confusion,
pain and loneliness thirteen year olds can be
prone to feeling, I would sit in my room and
beat on my cheap Silvertone guitar (from the
Sears catalogue), and howl to the tunes of The
Yardbirds, Savoy Brown, Eric Burdon and
The Animals, and the early Rolling Stones.
At the age of thirteen, I was unaware of the
true source of this music. All I knew was that
some musicians in London, England were
expressing what I was feeling, and that when I
banged away and howled out my feelings with
them, I felt a lot better. Somehow I felt much
less alone. I felt relief. It felt true and big and
necessary.
A few years later I would learn of the artists
from whom these British bands borrowed
(and sometimes stole). I would learn about
The Blues, born of a struggle much deeper
than mine, yet a struggle in which I found
a necessary identification. Robert Johnson,
Son House, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy
Waters, Howling Wolf, Little Walter, Albert
King, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells: men of
the blues. And amongst them, this woman,
this force...Big Mama Thornton. A woman
working in a field of men. Walking through
the truth of her life. Sharing her hard times
and good times. With courage and creativity and definitely lots of colour! Finding her
relief.
No longer thirteen, I understand that there
is suffering in life. But there is also rising
above - pain expressed is pain lessened. The
spiritual act of creative expression is salve to
the wound. It allows us to “keep on keepin’
on”. There is transcendence.
Truth. Necessity. Expression. Connection.
Perseverance. And Rising Above. The Blues.

Ron Casat
Jackie is so happy to be reunited with her Big Mama family, after
touring the show to Calgary, Edmonton and Richmond more than 8
years ago. She was last in Victoria with Decidedly Jazz Danceworks.
A veteran of the stage, she has made a name for herself in both theatre and film. Selected theatre credits include Cookin’ at The Cookery
(Dora Award), Crowns, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Adventures of a Black Girl
in Search of God, Member of the Wedding, Gospel at Colonus, Gideon’s
Blues, Consecrated Grounds, Whylah Falls, and most recently as “Gloria”
in Michel Tremblay’s St. Carmen of the Main. Selected film credits
include: Majority Rules, Doodlebops, Stuart McLean’s Vinyl Café, host
of the gospel TV series Hallelujah, Sue Thomas F.B.Eye, Monk, This
Is Wonderland, Welcome to Mooseport, Mr. Bojangles, and The Color of
Justice.
One of Canada’s foremost singers of gospel, blues, and jazz, Jackie
is known internationally for her performances on the concert stage,
nightclubs and in the recording studio. She has been blessed to share
the stage with many great musicians, and most recently released a new
album with the legendary Peter Appleyard and the Sophisticated Ladies
(of which she is a proud member) at the Toronto International Jazz
Festival. She has also released her own solo album entitled A Woman's
View Through Child’s Eyes.
Jackie has received the Canadian Black Achievement Award, the
Toronto Blues Society Lifetime Achievement Award, and is the recipient of Dora, Juno, Jessie, Betty, and NAACP Award nominations. In
2011 Jackie received a Gemini for “Best Performance by an Actress in
a Leading Role in a Dramatic Program or Mini-Series” for The Gospel
According to the Blues.
Her family brings her much joy and support, and one of the greatest
blessings has been to perform with her daughter Kim Richardson, who
lives in Montreal. Enjoy the show, and say hello to Big Mama!
Ron Casat
Music Director/Keyboards
Ron Casat has been involved in both the Canadian and global music
community as a performer, composer, arranger, session musician and
producer since 1967. An early exposure to music played by family
and friends in southwestern Saskatchewan has led to a career rich and
diverse in musical experience. Ron has produced such artists as
James Keelaghan, Diamond Joe White, Kat Danser, as well as the
world beat sounds of The Rembetica Hipsters. As a studio musician,
Ron can be heard on the recordings of Amos Garrett, Tim Williams,
Maria Muldaur, Oscar Lopez, and Donald Ray Johnson to name but a
few. His past theatre credits include performances in Swing Time, Rise
Again - The Music of Stan Rogers at Lunchbox Theater in Calgary, The
River - A Tribute to Joni Mitchell at Alberta Theatre Projects, Fire! at
Theatre Calgary, as well as previous productions of Big Mama! - The
Willie Mae Thornton Story at the Roxy Theater in Edmonton, and the
Gateway Theater in Richmond. Ron is looking forward to working
with old friends Jackie Richardson and director John Cooper, as well
as the production team for what promises to be an exciting run at the
Belfry. Enjoy the show!
Acting Company
Andy Graffitti
Andy Graffitti
Drums
Andy has been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a
poet, a pawn and a king. OK, not a pirate.
He has played the blues for 45 years,
and debuted in theatre in Oliver! at the
Vancouver Playhouse in 1966. He has made
music with both Ron and Bill over the
years. Andy’s association with John Cooper
began in 1987 doing two plays with and
about music, Fire and Love is Strange. It's a
pleasure to work with them all again, and to
make the acquaintance of the fabulous Ms.
Richardson. It's also great to work at a theatre he can see from his window.
Bill Johnson
Bill Johnson
Guitar
Bill is an easy standout guitarist and vocalist on Canada’s west coast. His passion for
the blues began as a child and has had many
years to mature and become unique unto
him. Mostly self-taught, he has had to satisfy
some very famous original artists working as
a sideman. Bill’s most recent CD Still Blue,
was nominated for the 2012 Juno Award
for Best Blues Recording. He has also been
recognized by the Toronto Blues Society four
times with Maple Blues Award nominations.
