Who is Aquatica?
After being made redundant just over 12 years ago,
Malcolm Box, together with his wife Christina, started Aquatica.
Malcolm was passionate about quality tapware, had a dream about developing New Zealand’s
best laundry tub and was looking forward to building a business, using his 13 years' experience in
tapware. He was keen to develop products without the constraints imposed by corporate business
practices.
What Malcom and Christina both valued was the contribution that people make to a good business
and they wanted to prove to themselves that it was possible to run an ethical family business, that
cared about its staff, could model integrity in
everything and could still be successful.

today, with over 40 hand-picked staff,
committed to the business, to delivering
quality, to helping customers and caring
about one another. It’s still a family business,
100% owned, and one of the country’s major
suppliers of tapware and laundry tubs. Most
of the staff have been with the business since
their job was first created and these staff
are the chief assets of the business. This has
meant that customers have access to a great
deal of knowledge.
The Sales Department alone has a
combined experience of over 100 years in
the plumbing industry. Their shared passion
for what Aquatica is doing with innovation
and service has resulted in their customers
seeing them as their best supplier and
end-consumers frequently raving about the
service they receive.

It means that when we say we deliver
customer service we don’t just pay lipservice – an entire culture of customer
service has developed in the business
since the beginning so that everyone
knows that helping someone else in
the business helps them to help the
customer.
We do fulfil unusual customer requests,
if at all possible. We don’t use voicemail
– we figure our customers ring up
because they want to talk to us. We
frequently service product even when it’s
an installation fault. Within the business
we have 5 staff in Engineering, 2 in
Product Development and another 20
assembling and testing tapware and
laundry tubs. It’s all very well buying
a beautiful Aquatica product but it’s
really comforting to know that, should
something go wrong, you’ve got all that
knowledge and a willing attitude to help,
to fall back on.

Check out the following water-saving suggestions all possible without any changes to family habits. If
you can adopt some other water-saving practices,
like turning off the tap while you brush your teeth,
you’ll save even more.
Saving water isn’t only about having shorter showers or running the tap for a shorter time.
Without thinking, our families will generally run the tap the same length of time, whether the
water runs at 15 litres a minute or at 4. So, lowering the flow is the quickest solution, without
changing habits.
In the bathroom or toilet, an easy option for mains pressure
systems, is our German-made pressure compensating aerator
that can quickly and easily be placed into the aerator housing
of your existing bathroom tap to change the flow to a soft
spray, at 3 litres per minute. Your system could now be
delivering up to 20 litres per minute. If it takes 30 seconds to
wash your hands, you could be saving more than 8 litres of
water every time. If there are 10 hand washings in your family
each day, that’s a saving of up to 31,000 litres per year, plus
electricity savings as well.
NB: These devices are for mains pressure only. On a low
pressure system, you could back-feed cold water into your hot
water line.
Around 80% of a home’s hot water is used in showers. If you
have good mains pressure, your mixed flow could be up to
20 litres per minute. A 10 minute shower would therefore
use 200 litres of water. Reducing the flow to 10 litres per minute is still a good
shower. So you could halve your water usage without reducing your
time under the shower. A family of four, each still showering 10
minutes a day would save 400 litres of water a day (around
$600 per year), plus the cost to heat that water, which could
be another $600 per year, by simply installing an Aquatica
10-litre per minute pressure compensating washer into
your handshower hose.
We don’t recommend reducing the flow in the kitchen, or
over the bath, as this doesn’t usually save water – you’ll
want to fill the jug or the bath until full, and the quicker
the better.

Under the new WELS regulations, you will notice tapware and handshowers
appearing with star ratings. These ratings will help the consumer to make

buying decisions on new products based on their water saving features. The
more stars, the more water is saved. The system is being phased in over a
few years, but all products will need to be labelled by 1 April 2013.

The two most common systems are:
Unequal Pressure:
This is the most common system in New Zealand. A
header tank or pressure reducing valve is usually used to
supply low pressure water to the hot water cylinder.
How to recognise this
system?
• The cold water flow
is much greater
than the hot.

tank in the loft or a
pressure reducing
valve just before
cold water enters
the hot water
cylinder.

This system uses a
special hot water
cylinder which is fitted with a pressure limiting valve for
safety.
Fortunately, most Aquatica tapware is engineered to work
on all pressure systems. However, water pressures vary
considerably and it’s important to recognise what sort of
system you have to help you make an intelligent choice.
How to recognise this system?
• The hot and cold water flow is strong and equal.
• The hot water cylinder is described as a mains
pressure cylinder.
• Almost all gas hot water systems are mains pressure.

Innovative ideas
from Aquatica
Isolator Filter Stops
Installing isolator filter stops to your taps is a great way of
protecting ceramic mechanisms from small particles of dirt. These
particles can scratch the ceramic cartridge which can then cause
the tap to leak. (This applies to all tapware products, regardless
of their origin). Isolator filter stops are an ideal solution to this
problem because they:

Rotary Ceramic Cartridge
The new rotary ceramic cartridge in the Novecento and Mini Kris
shower mixers provide for easy mixing of hot and cold water.
As the mixer is turned, the cold water gradually becomes warm,
through to hot. The amount of water flow can also be adjusted
during installation using flow control valves on the mixer.

controlled with the back of the hand, preventing the transfer of such bacteria.

The Xera and Oblio water filter mixers include a long life water filter
cartridge, sourced from America. The KDF/GAC is a “two-media”
cartridge consisting of KDF (high-purity copper-zinc alloy) and GAC
(granular activated carbon), providing superior filtration qualities.
Through the electrolytic and oxidation reactions of the KDF and the
absorption and entrapment capabilities of the GAC, the KDF/GAC can
remove or greatly reduce a wide range of contaminants through to
30,000 litres.
The KDF media also provides a bacteriostatic effect which is hostile to
algae, fungi and bacteria. The OKDF30/1 is also Cyst safe.

Aquatica shower mixers are unique in their design and offer
features that really perform in low/unequal and mains pressure

New Zealand BMX champion Sarah Walker’s trip to Aquatica’s Avondale factory
just days before heading overseas to compete in international competition was
nothing out of the ordinary for the young woman who takes a keen interest in
everything she does.
It’s Sarah’s nature to ask questions and find
out all she can about her competitions,
her competitors, and the courses she’ll
be racing on. Arming herself consistently
with this kind of information has made her
a world-beater in BMX - a gruelling sport
requiring mental agility, physical toughness,
and strategy - and guaranteed her a place
at the London Olympics 2012.
It therefore comes as no surprise that Sarah
has taken this same approach to building
a home with her partner, world class rower
Ian Seymour.

There isn’t one square metre or feature of
the house that Sarah and Ian haven’t taken
an interest in - right down to the Aquatica

Sarah and Ian say that in both their
sports there is always an outcome in the
back of their minds, and becoming a
champion means understanding that the
will to prepare is vital – similar, they say, to
building a house.
They have chosen Cambridge Homes, a

in our home and we’re looking forward to
seeing the finished product.

Malcolm said the whole team at Aquatica
was thoroughly impressed with Sarah’s
proactive attitude.
“She’s quite an amazing young woman

qualities that make her a world champion.
She weighs everything up before making
big decisions but at the same time she
really seems to know exactly what she
wants.
"As far as tapware, mixers, showers,
bathroom accessories and a laundry tub
goes, Sarah and Ian obviously want a range

offer the practicality and functionality they
need,” says Malcolm.
With the majority of the house decisions
finalised, Sarah left just a few days later
for Europe and South Africa for the UCI
BMX world championships. In August she
won the silver medal in the Elite Women’s
section in South Africa.

Aquatica has been designing shower mixers for NZ conditions for over 10 years and we have developed mixers that will help you in
every situation.
It all starts with our European cartridge that has been designed to deliver maximum flow and smooth temperature. We have also built
into this cartridge an anti-scald feature that can be adjusted to protect children from the problems associated with hot water. Furthermore, we’ve included a water saving feature that again can be adjusted for those who have mains pressure and want to conserve water.
We then install the European cartridge into our mixer body that has an exclusive and completely unique valve system fitted to the hot and
cold inlets. These valves allow adjustment of the flow to either limit the flow on mains pressure or balance the flow on unequal pressures.
So when choosing a shower mixer, choose one that suits your situation - you will not regret it. Ceramic Cartridge
Smarte, Sigmma and Forté shower mixers all feature our unique
ceramic cartridge. This cartridge has an innovative disc design
which provides more water flow and a smoother shower mix,
by giving greater control when moving the lever from hot to warm.
Built into the shower mixer body are these handy control valves.
These valves allow adjustment of the mixer to either limit the flow
of water on mains pressure or balance the flow on unequal pressure.
This ensures that mixers can be altered to suit all types of installation.

Aquatica Warranty
Aquatica NZ Limited offer , from the date of purchase , a 2 year warranty on hand showers, a 5 year
warranty on tapware and accessories and a lifetime warranty on stainless steel sinks. The pull-out
spray parts of our sink mixers have a 2 year warranty.
Aquatica NZ Limited warrants that only high quality workmanship and materials have been
employed in the manufacture of its tapware, accessories and stainless steel products. If any faulty
workmanship or materials is proven during the warranty period, Aquatica NZ Limited will at its own
cost repair or at its option replace the faulty product. The guarantee is transferrable but original
proof of purchase from an authorized Aquatica distributor, is required. Any suspected defect must
be notified to Aquatica as soon as possible after discovery and any repair work must be performed
by a plumber who has received authorisation from Aquatica prior to proceeding with the work.
To minimize customer inconvenience, Aquatica may immediately authorise repair work to be
undertaken. However, this is not necessarily acceptance of liability.
The use of spray or abrasive cleaners of any kind will void the warranty. (Tapware should only be
cleaned with a mild detergent and soft damp cloth).
Failure to use an in-line strainer or filter on lines to tapware incorporating a ceramic cartridge or
ceramic disc mechanism may void the warranty. Water pressure exceeding 1000 kPa will void the
warranty.
