A message from Daniel King
PRESIDENT’S NOTES
Dear Fellow Club Members,
June was an eventful month with the AACA Central Spring Meet held in Independence,
Missouri from June 4th through June 6th. Several Tulsa region members were in attendance
as you will see in the article below. June 14th was our annual Haikey Creek car show and
although the rain was off and on we managed to present a good many cars. And thanks to
Joe Smith, David Turner, and Phil Judkins the rest of 2015 will have many more opportunities
for us to get together and go places with our cars.
Be sure to look at the club calendar for more details, but we have scheduled a garage tour
of Basil and Ann McLaren’s home. August 30th through September 4th is the all-important
Glidden Tour. Then a garage tour to Bartlesville, followed by an over-night trip to Miami’s
Coleman theater.
I’m looking forward to all these activities and more, so I hope to see you all there.
Sincerely, Daniel King

AACA TULSA REGION
General Meeting Minutes , June 14, 2015
The June 14, 2015 Tulsa Region
General Meeting was convened by
President Dan King at 1:00 p.m. at
our annual Haikey Creek Car Show.
The minutes were read by Jim
Jones and approved as read. Teresa
Wikinson gave the treasury and it
approved as presented.
Dan reported on the Central Spring
Meet. We had six members at the
meet.
Phil Judkins said there would be a
silent movie at the Broken Arrow Vo
Tech on Friday, June 19, at 7:00 p.m.
David Turner reported on the
Tour to Bartlesville scheduled for
September 12, 2015. We will have a
tour of the Wright Tower, and lunch
at Dinks BBQ. Our garage tour is the
collection of Neil Conover, which
consists mostly of Brass Era cars.
Conover buys, sells and restores cars.
Joe Smith reported on our tour to
Basil and Ann McLarin’s scheduled
for July 18, 2015.
Richard Holmes said there would
be a show at the new Heart of Route
66 Auto Museum in Sapulpa Oct. 3,
2015. He also said that the museum
should be open by the first of the
year. Richard also had raffle tickets
for a MGA race car which was
donated to help raise money for the
new museum.
There was discussion about the
Glidden Tour. It was reported that
the only money spent by the Region
would be on an ad in the program
and for a banner which will hang in
the reception room.
Phil Judkins said we could have the
tour to Miami any time we wanted;
there is a motorcycle, and a car
museum to see before the Coleman
Theater tour.
With with no other business, the
meeting was adjourned at 1:40 p.m.,
and everybody enjoyed all the cars at
the show.
Respectfully submitted
Jim Jones, secretary
Trip to Coleman Theatre in Miami
Phil Judkins has arranged for our club to visit the Coleman Theatre in Miami.
We have not set the date as yet, but the Coleman starts tours every day at
10:00 AM, and no reservations are necessary. Phil said we will be able to
show a silent movie accompanied by the theater organ, which would be
really, really fun. We’re thinking of showing the 1923 Harold Lloyd comedy
Safety Last! which includes one of the most famous images from the silent
film era, namely, Lloyd clutching the hands of a large clock as he dangles
from the outside of a skyscraper above traffic moving in the street far below.
The trip will include an overnight stay in Miami rather than try to squeeze
the trip up and back along with our activities all in one day. The date has
not been set but will probably be some time in October or perhaps early
November. www.colemantheatre.org

AACA Central Spring Meet
The AACA Central Spring Meet was held in Independence, Missouri from June 4th through June 6th. On Thursday,
June 4th there was a tour of Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Armacost Museum, the
private car collection of Robert S. Armacost who opened a Studebaker dealership in Kansas City in 1930. On Friday,
June 5th there was a tour of the Bingham Waggoner home which traces its roots back to 1852. From 1879 to 1978, it
was the home of the Waggoner family, owners of the Waggoner-Gates Milling Company which manufactured flour.
The home contains original furnishings and paintings. Saturday, June 6th was the show and with heavy rain falling
that morning things did not look good. But by about 10 AM the rain stopped and everyone wiped their cars dry
and the show proceeded. There were a great many cars from all decades. Saturday night was the awards banquet.
Joanna Cooper won the First Place Kid’s Choice Award, where the young people in attendance voted for their
favorite car in the entire show. I think Joanna enjoyed that award more than any other. Just look at that big smile.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO TODAY
by Randy Beeson
The big story of the month was the
saga of Frank Holt. After planting
a time bomb that exploded in a
U.S. Senate reception room, Holt, a
Cornell University German language
professor and peacenik, attacked and
shot financier J.P. “Jack” Morgan, Jr.
in his Glen Cove, Long Island home
on July 3rd. Morgan and his servants
restrained Holt who committed
suicide in jail three nights later by
climbing up the latticework of his
cell and diving head first into the
concrete floor. Holt had also managed
to plant a time bomb on the steamer
Minnehaha carrying 15,000 tons of
ammunition to Britain. The bomb
exploded on the 8th and the ship
radioed Cape Race, Newfoundland
that she was on fire and diverting
to Halifax, NS. Fire out, she docked
on the 9th. After his death, Holt was
identified as Harvard professor Eric
Muenter who had disappeared in
1906 after murdering his wife with
arsenic. Morgan would recover from
his wound.
On July 11th, a note was sent to a New
Orleans newspaper claiming that
additional bombs would be placed
on munitions ships sailing to England
and France. The author claimed to
be Holt’s successor and vowed to
kill Morgan and British ambassador
Spring-Rice. Holt’s death seemed to
trigger a rash of copycat saboteurs
and heightened public awareness of
sabotage. On the 17th, Mayor George
Quigley of New Britain, Connecticut
requested assistance from the Secret
Service in the investigation of a
suspected plot to blow up local arms
factories.
On the eastern front, Von
Hindenberg’s army had been
reinforced with an additional 150,000
troops as he prepared to attack
Russian forces near Warsaw. The
German attack succeeded and on the
30th, Warsaw and Lublin fell to Von
Hindenberg. The Cunard liner Orduna
reported an attempt on July 16th
by a German submarine to torpedo
her outside the Liverpool harbor as
Germany continued unrestricted
submarine warfare against the
western allies.
On July 8th, the U.S. Navy took
control of the German-owned
commercial radio station at Sayville,
L.I., based on suspected violations of
U.S. neutrality laws. Coded messages
would no longer be accepted for
transmission.
Tragedies dominated the news the
latter half of this month. On the 24th,
the excursion steamer Eastland sank in
20 feet of water near her Chicago pier,
taking 852 passengers to their deaths.
On the 26th, 275 miners were trapped
and feared dead in an underground
coal mine explosion at Christopher in
southern Illinois.
Famous births this month included
physicist Charles Towns, developer
of the laser, in Greenville, SC on the
Page 6 JULY Runningboard Ramblings
8th. Author Saul Bellow was born in
Montreal, Canada on the 10th.
This month’s Popular Mechanics
magazine announced the use of
slightly concave aftermarket accessory
rear view mirrors that could be
mounted on the front fenders of an
automobile to provide the driver with
a view of both sides of the street to
his rear. In Europe, allied forces were
using a unique armored car developed
in the U.S. This vehicle was equipped
with fore and aft driver controls and
could be driven from either end. In
addition the vehicle’s hand crank was
located inside, eliminating the need
for a driver to crank a stalled vehicle
outside while under fire. The car also
featured a machine gun in a topside
revolving turret.
REGION TRIP TO
BARTLESVILLE
September 12th
The garage tour and trip to
Bartlesville is currently set for
September 12th.
The plan is to tour the Frank
Lloyd Wright designed Price
Tower in the morning. We will
have lunch at Dink’s Pit Bar-BQue restaurant and then proceed
to David’s friend’s barn and see
his brass era cars. From there,
David will point us in the right
direction back toward Tulsa.
