Horn of Plenty Spring ‘11 To alleviate hunger through the gathering and distribution of food while encouraging self-sufficiency, collaboration, advocacy and education. Kids Cafe Celebrates Expansion That Will Help Feed More and More Hungry Children The Mission of Kids Cafe To alleviate childhood hunger in Arizona by providing nutritious meals in a safe, accessible and nurturing environment to children at risk of hunger. ...because no child deserves to go to bed hungry. It was a long-awaited, much-anticipated celebration of progress on April 7 when the Food Bank’s Kids Cafe program opened the doors to its new meal preparation facility at the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance Surprise facility. The Kids Cafe program provides an important after school meal for at-risk kids who receive breakfast and lunch at school but in many cases don’t have a dinner meal waiting for them at home. One in four children in Arizona today lives in poverty, amounting to more than 260,000 children in Maricopa Country alone. Kids Cafe seeks to feed as many school-age children as possible. “This expansion has been years in the making, and we’re very excited that the day is finally here,” said Laura Brill, Kids Cafe program manager. “The statistics of childhood hunger in Arizona are disturbing and unacceptable. This is the future of Arizona, and we feel like we need to invest now.” What was a 200-square-foot area for volunteers to make sandwiches has expanded to an 8,500-square-foot facility that will allow the program to immediately expand from the current level of 1,700 meals per day to 3,000 by this summer and 4,000 by the end of 2011. The ultimate goal is to reach 8,000 to 10,000 meals by 2013, with the introduction of hot meals for the first time. Currently, about 40 volunteers prepare the sandwiches, fruits and vegetables for the daily Kids Cafe meals. But more volunteers are now needed to keep up with expansion and to perform site-checks for future program sites. Anyone interested in volunteering or becoming a host site should call Grace Rodil at (602) 343-5629 or Melissa Jensen at (602) 647-1820. www.FirstFoodBank.org Check It Out “Canstruction” 2011 and “Get in Bed With Mark” stories Page 5 NASCAR/AARP “Drive to End Hunger” Page 10 Board of Directors Executive Officers Carol McElroy, Chairman Durant’s Restaurant A Letter From Our President & CEO... Jerry Brown, Raymond Combe, Claudia Cucitro, Sue Kaplan-Anderson, Gloria Ortega, Eric Wolverton, Colleen Dunbar, Sharon Pederson John van Hengel Founder Emeritus 2 More Than 77,000 Pounds Donated During Super Citrus Saturday Collections Food Bank Creator, John van Hengel, Honored During Founder’s Day Festivities On February 18 – 44 years after its doors originally opened – St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance celebrated its annual Founders Day and the birthday of the man who started it all: John van Hengel. St. Mary’s Food employees took part in the true spirit of the food bank – directly helping the hungry by building emergency food boxes at the Del E. Webb Distribution Center and carrying out boxes and loading up cars at the Knight Transportation Community Services Center to pay tribute to Mr. van Hengel, as well as the other individuals and companies that made the idea of food banking possible. In 1967, Mr. van Hengel coined the idea of a “bank” by inviting individuals and companies who had extra resources to make a “deposit” of food and funds so that agencies could make “withdrawals” without cost to help those in need. He later approached St. Mary’s Basilica with his idea of creating a central location for the donations and distributions, and thus, the first food bank was born. Today, St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance is the largest food bank in the United States, distributing 72 million pounds of food last year to two-thirds of Arizona’s 15 counties. By using Mr. van Hengel’s vision, communities all around the world are now able to help the hungry in their communities. Mr. van Hengel passed away in 2005. He would have been 88 this year. Save a Tree After collecting more than 20,000 pounds of oranges and grapefruits during the inaugural Super Citrus Saturday event in 2010, St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance set even higher goals for the second time around. No one was disappointed. Residents in Arcadia, Central Phoenix and Surprise came out in groves – er, droves – for the Jan. 22 Super Citrus Saturday, filling semitrucks at all three locations North Phoenix Baptist Church, Shepherd of the Hills United Church of Christ in Arcadia and the St. Mary’s Surprise location). By the end of the day, more than 61,000 pounds had been donated from folks who gleaned trees at or near their homes to benefit Arizona’s hungry. Emboldened by the great turnout, a second citrus collection day was scheduled for Feb. 26th and another 16,000 pounds was brought to the same three locations. That’s 77,000-plus pounds of citrus that was distributed by St. Mary’s around Arizona and to food banks in eight other Western States. Those food banks, in turn, share their surplus items such as potatoes (Idaho), apples (Washington) and green vegetables (California) so everyone receives a variety of food. St. Mary’s would like to thank North Phoenix Baptist Church, Shepherd of the Hills United Church of Christ, all the volunteers who manned the locations and, most of all, those who did all the picking, packing and hauling to help the hungry. Feeding Arizona’s Hungry – While the Great Debate Rages On It was the eternal question buzzing around St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance this Easter season: Which came first, the chicken or the egg? This ancient philosophical debate played out in full force on March 29th when both Hickman’s Family Farms and Tyson Foods made significant donations of protein to the Del E. Webb Distribution Center. Hickman’s Family Farms continued its longstanding support of not only St. Mary’s but food banks across Arizona with a donation of 112,000 eggs to the Food Bank– part of the 300,000 eggs that Hickman’s donated to food banks throughout the state. Not to be outdone, Tyson Foods donated 30,000 pounds of chicken products the same morning, the latest in a series of welcome donations from our good friends in Arkansas. So which showed up first? The Chicken? The Egg? As luck would have it, the companies two trucks reached St. Mary’s in a flat-footed tie! But while the debate rages on, thousands of hungry Arizona families will enjoy meals with protein, thanks to the efforts of Hickman’s and Tyson. We’re going to “egg” them on for a rematch next year – unless someone is chicken, of course. 3 Spring ‘11 Swift Transportation Donates Much Needed Freight to Pick up Food Around the Country Help “Stamp Out Hunger” In the mid 1960s, Jerry Moyes had just one truck, and in it, he carried a very big idea: he wanted to start a small trucking company here in Phoenix and turn it into an international enterprise. He succeeded, and today it is known as Swift Transportation. Around that same time, John van Hengel had a big idea of his own: he wanted to start up his very own food bank with the hopes of helping the hungry in his Phoenix community. Today, St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance is the largest food bank in the world. By Donating Food – Simply Through Your Mailbox STAMP OUT HUNGER™ 2011 SATURDAY, MAY 14, 2011 HelpStampOutHunger.org or FirstFoodBank.org It only makes sense that these two inspiring corporations from the same area with similar histories would team up to battle one of Arizona’s toughest issues: hunger. Swift Transportation has been supporting St. Mary’s since 2000, and on top of what they already give, Swift has recently offered $50,000 worth of donated freight. This means that after the Swift trucks have made their deliveries in other areas around the country, they will pick up donated food and drive it back to the St. Mary’s distribution center – an opportunity for even more food to help Arizona’s growing hungry population that may not have been possible without the help of Moyes’ company. PROUD SPONSORS: Now in its 19th year, the National Association of Letter Carriers’ annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive has collected more than a billion pounds of non-perishable food to feed the hungry in our country. The nation’s largest single-day food drive is back for 2011 – and you can make a huge difference and help without going any further than your own mailbox. “We just feel that we’ve been blessed in the Arizona environment and with the businesses we’ve been involved with; we feel we want to contribute back to the community, ” Moyes said. The donated Twilight Star, Tinsel Korey, transportation from SwiftFood has already made thousands of more Visits St. Mary’s Bank meals possible. to Promote Young People Giving Back Swift has recently stepped up to support St. Mary’s even more by committing funds from a recent golf tournament and by offering the loan of tractor-trailers when they are needed. Mark Saturday, May 14, on your calendar and prepare now for the big day. Your letter carrier will leave a grocery bag as a reminder the week of the event, but you are encouraged to use this event to clean out your pantry. Leave the filled bag or bags next to the mailbox early Saturday morning and the letter carriers will do the rest, picking up your donation as they drop off your mail on their normal routes. Swift Transportation has 16,000 trucks on the road at any given time, 25,000 employees, and a commitment to be “Best in Class.” Moyes’ guiding principles and Code of Business Conduct from the start of the company continue to inform business decisions today. Last year, St. Mary’s received more than 440,000 pounds of food from the Stamp Out Hunger food drive, almost 20 percent of all the food donations the Food Bank received for the entire year. This is a critical time for the food bank heading into the long, hot Arizona summer – when donations typically decline while the demand for food increases with hungry children out of school. »» Colleen Dunbar, Community Relations Intern, with Sharon Pederson 2011 strategic plan and mission update In its annual winter retreat, the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance Board of Directors began the process of developing a new strategic plan aimed at guiding the organization through 2014. For more information on this important drive and how you can help, visit www.firstfoodbank.org or www.helpstampouthunger.com. At the February meeting, the Board, along with members of the staff senior leadership team, developed four main goals for the next three years: advance advocacy; enhance programming; improve infrastructure; resource development. Teams of board and staff members are working now to refine how the goals will be measured and are creating strategies and action steps for each of the four broader goals. As part of future planning, the Board also refined the Food Bank’s mission statement to better emphasize the fact that St. Mary’s cannot work alone to deliver food into the community to those who need it the most – a thriving network of partners is needed to serve, deliver, advocate and educate in order for St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance To alleviate hunger through the gathering and distribution of food, HelpStampOutHunger.com while encouraging self-sufficiency, collaboration, advocacy and education. 4 2011 Canstruction Takes Ingenuity and Food Donations to New Level This year’s 2011 Canstruction event was bigger and better than ever. The fifth annual build competition that combines engineering and design excellence with a unique way to feed the hungry moved to downtown Phoenix RED Development CityScape for its Feb. 5-11 run – and this year’s contestants really stepped up their games. A record-setting 12 teams submitted entries that were fantastic works of art and worthy competitors for selection as one of the best. And the more than 56,000 food items – almost double last year’s total – that were used to create the impressive structures were “deconstructed” and donated to St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance at a time of year when emergency food box components are especially low. After the dust settled, here were the results of the judging: Juror’s Favorite: “It’s Time We Can End Hunger.” Arrington Watkins Architects / Dibble Engineering / Paragon Structural Engineers / LSW Engineering/ Gilbane Building Company Best Structural Ingenuity: “Take Hunger Off The Grid.” SmithGroup / JJR|Floor / DPR Construction Best Use of Labels: “The Candidate for Change is You.” McCarthy Building Companies / Leo A Daly Best Meal: “Hal The Hungry Hippo.” ULI Central Arizona Young Leaders Group Honorable Mention: “Despicable Meals No More.” FoRM Design Studio / Ryan Companies / Kendle Design Collaborative/ JRC Design/ JLC Consulting Honorable Mention: “The Stagecoach Journey: A Mission to End Hunger.” DWL Architects and Planners / Mortensen Construction With cash donations from the Canstruction teams included, enough food for more than 60,000 meals was provided through this fantastic event. A big thank you to this year’s coordinators Kris Gray from Logan Simpson and Lori Bennett of Summit Builders for their boundless energy and incredible dedication to making the 2011 Canstruction a success in every way possible. “Get in Bed with Mark” Passes Half-Million Meal Mark with Record Donations in 2011 Getting in bed with Mark – and helping St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance – is a more popular idea every year. With appearances from a heavyweight list of local celebrities including Tom Chambers, Nils Lofgren, Pat McMahon and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Alice Cooper, Sleep America and KSLX (100.7 FM) took the fifth annual “Get in Bed with Mark” radiothon to new heights during its three-day trip around the Valley on April 6-8. With KSLX morning man Mark Mayfield, midday man Jim Owen and afternoon drive man Pete Cummings eloquently telling the story of St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance’s role in feeding Arizona’s hungry, listeners visiting Sleep America locations in Glendale, Tempe and Paradise Valley donated more than 22,000 pounds of non-perishable food items and contributed more than $20,000 in cash for the first time in the five-year history of the drive. That will allow the Food Bank to distribute enough food for more than 160,000 meals – and raises the total to more than half a million meals over the five years. This year, Sleep America’s Debbie Gaby hosted the inaugural “Great Bed Race” with eight teams racing around its parking lot at Paradise Valley Mall on specially-engineered rolling beds. St. Mary’s would like to thank Debbie Gaby, Santos Lucero and the employees of Sleep America, Sharon Guerrero and the staff at KSLX, SKYE Restaurant, Wildlife World Zoo and Aquarium, the Phoenix Suns, the Arizona Diamondbacks and all the other companies who donated food and incentive items during the event. A special thank you to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, who made a special $5,000 donation to Arizona’s hungry, and to Allstate Insurance, ASU4Food and Hilton Garden Inn of Scottsdale for delivering the results of their individual food drives to help boost this year’s total. 5 Spring ‘11 2011 FLAGSTAFF ROTARY HUNGER BANQUET Flagstaff Symphony Raises Over 6,000 Meals for Northern Arizona’s Hungry Photo by Donal Hill The inaugural Flagstaff Rotary Hunger Banquet brought a unique and effective way to address the issue of hunger in the world to Flagstaff on March 2, and was a huge success. Benefiting three organizations including St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, the banquet asked its attendees to play a lottery game of economic classes. When each person or family first arrived at the event, they were placed in one of three categories: The lower class, representing an overwhelming 70 percent of the population; the middle class representing 20 percent of the population; or the upper class making up the remaining 10 percent. When dinner was served, those assigned to the lower class ate on the floor and were given a plate of rice and beans. The middle class had a buffet-style pizza dinner, while the upper class was served a five-course, prime rib dinner. It was both a fun and stark way to bring the hunger problem around the world – and in Arizona – to light. Arizona has the second highest population of people living in poverty in the United States. The event raised a total of $10,000 shared between St. Mary’s, the Northern Arizona Food Bank and Flagstaff Family Food Center. Thanks to the event, St. Mary’s will be able to distribute enough food for more than 23,000 meals for the hungry of northern Arizona. Thank you Flagstaff Rotary, another prime example of service before self. St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance would like to sincerely thank the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra and all the patrons who took part in the March 11 event to help raise funds and awareness of the hunger problem in northern Arizona. The performance not only brought out the inspiration of classical music, but the support for families that are having a hard time getting a meal to their table every day. St. Mary’s offers thanks to FSO and its executive director, Laura Kelly, for inspiring the audience to donate a total of $907. That’s enough to allow the Food Bank to distribute an additional 6,349 meals into Flagstaff and northern Arizona. 61,259 SQUARE MILES of RURAL DISTRIBUTION We distribute enough food for 10,000 families throughout northern Arizona each month. Our rural agencies are almost all volunteer-operated with little to no budget, in areas of high unemployment with few major industries to provide significant funding support. St. Mary’s Food Bank’s ability to deliver food to the agencies is an absolutely vital part of our mission. This program, in addition to other efforts to recruit volunteers has resulted in an overall increase of 50% over the past two years. The Advisory Council for the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance–Flagstaff (SMFBA) continues to move forward in achieving its three major objectives to increase and enhance (1) community awareness, (2) volunteerism and (3) fund raising. The Council’s participation and dedication to the SMFBAFlagstaff continues to move forward with innovative plans and energy to meet its three objectives. Reviewing their performance over the past two years, there is no reason to doubt their future efforts. In March - April, the Council partnered with KNAU-FM, National Public Radio’s affiliate in northern Arizona, in its spring pledge drive. For every $35 dollar contribution to KNAU, SMFBA sponsors Sunwest Bank, Vora Financial, Kinney Construction Services, Dell Systems, and local author Burt Gershater contributed enough to provide 85 meals. Overall, those donations generated 105,000 meals to families in need throughout Northern Arizona. “Feed Your Mind, Feed A Family” Provides 103,000 Meals in Northern Arizona This was the third time in the last two years that KNAU and SMFBAFlagstaff corroborated in this fundraising effort entitled “Feed your Mind Feed a Family.“ This spring’s drive was the most successful ever for KNAU. The publicity engendered by KNAU during this drive for the SMFBA was simply unbelievable. In the area of fund raising, Council members have also been directed to commence researching potential prospects regarding their annual budgetary plans, i.e., when do they prepare their budgets, etc.? Such planning will be able to help the food bank better focus on their ‘asks’, e.g., awareness of future promotions, etc. Partnerships recently developed with the Sunshine Rescue Mission and St. Vincent De Paul Society to distribute food boxes for families in need have continued to be successful. “Easter boxes” distributed recently all came with ham and its trimmings thanks to our donor support. Through this partnership, each organization has spent less, served more and continues to thrive in 2011. Plans are now being implemented to engage major employers, such as W. L. Gore, Nestle Purina, city and county governments, Coconino Community College, Northern Arizona University’s employees/ students to 7 This spring marked the third “Feed Your Mind, Feed a Family” event which directly benefits St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance and KNAU – northern Arizona’s National Public Radio station. Annually one of the best fundraisers for St. Mary’s in northern Arizona, this year’s event was again a smashing success. With the help from sponsors like Dell Systems, Sunwest Bank, Kinney Construction Services, Vora Financial and Burt Gershater, each pledge that was called in to KNAU resulted in a donation to St. Mary’s that allows the Food Bank to distribute 85 meals into the community. When the pledge drive ended, enough money to provide food for 103,000 meals was collected for struggling families throughout northern Arizona. KNAU and St. Mary’s Food Bank form a natural partnership. Both non-profits service all five of the northern counties in Arizona. St. Mary’s appreciates the opportunity to take part in the pledge period not only for the financial support, but for the opportunity to inform and advocate. Spring ‘11 Mountain Ridge celebrates National Student Food Drive Title By Hosting Movie Event For Students and Staff at Harkins Theatre Sunrise Mountain High School’s “Empty Bowls” Event Successful for the Second Year in a Row Sunrise Mountain High School has become a great friend of St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance – and the students, staff and faculty were at it again this spring. After a hard-working fall defending their title, the students at Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale celebrated their fourth straight National Student Food Drive championship on March 28 with a special event at a Harkins Theatre especially reserved for them. Harkins allowed the students to select any current movie playing and opened the doors to their theatre to the Mountain Lions, who selected Adjustment Bureau with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. Mountain Ridge rewarded the classes who contributed to the most food to the drive in addition to the Student Government who sponsors the drive at Mountain Ridge each year. STUGO Advisor Doug Evans reports that a great time was had by all. St. Mary’s would like to thank new sponsor Harkins Theatres for making such a great addition to our National Student Food Drive, as well as our other great sponsors including KPHO (Channel 5), KEZ (99.9 FM), the Phoenix Coyotes, 3-D Tea and Sara Lee. The fifth annual National Student Food Drive is just around the corner, and St. Mary’s is hoping for even more high schools to join the record 30 schools who took part in 2010. Interested students or advisors should contact St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance Education Manager Chet Provorse at (602) 343-3169. The Mustangs held their second annual Empty Bowls Charity Dinner and Silent Auction on March 24, in the Sunrise High School cafeteria as students, staff, family and friends enjoyed a delicious dinner and took home an empty bowl created by ceramics teacher Frank Eager as a reminder of those in our community whose bowls were literally empty that night. By the end of the night, the event had raised more than $2,500 for the Food Bank. In just two years Sunrise Mountain has raised more than $5,000, allowing St. Mary’s to distribute enough food to provide 35,000 meals into the community. Other high schools have held similar empty bowl events for the Food Bank this spring, including Dysart High School, which collected more than $1,000. And on March 24, the DECA high school students from Raymond S. Kellis, Copper Canyon and La Joya High Schools held an empty bowl silent auction at the Westgate City Center in Glendale – featuring bowls designed to resemble the different shops and restaurants inside Westgate. To all Mustangs – led by Mr. Eager, Mrs. Migliorino and Mr. Hollabaugh and including its involved and aware students and staff – and all the high school students who participated in Empty Bowls events this year, St. Mary’s thanks you on behalf of Arizona’s hungry. National Pork Board Donates An Incredible 12,000 Pounds of Precious Pork Protein is a precious commodity for Food Banks. Obtaining quality protein is the backbone to nutritious and balanced meals. That’s why St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance was so excited when the National Pork Board made a donation of more than 12,000 pounds of pork product to the Del E. Webb Distribution Center on March 3. The donation included large quantities of Farmer John bacon, sausage and other protein products that will be a great addition to not only the Food Bank’s emergency food box program, but its distribution to more than 500 agency partners at 700 locations around the state. The National Pork Board was in Phoenix for meetings and representatives from Arizona, Minnesota and North Carolina pork producers were on hand for the donation presentation. America’s 70,000 pork producers help feed the world and are committed to ending hunger by supporting local food banks. The pork provided in Phoenix equates to nearly 60,000 meals for families in need. 8 Largest Field Makes 10th Annual Kids Cafe Open a Tremendous Success Downtown Glendale Continues Support for St. Mary’s at 2011 TASTE Event More than 30 area eateries and food purveyors joined forces to tantalize and dazzle Glendale residents with their creations at Glendale’s Culinary Festival’s inaugural TASTE event on March 5 at Murphy Park in Historic Downtown Glendale. Neighborhood Restaurants - locally owned parent company of Zipps Sports Grill and Goldie’s Neighborhood Sports Cafe - and a record number of golfers combined to make St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance’s 10th Annual Kids Cafe Open a huge success. Portions of the proceeds benefitted St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance and continued the strong partnership between the Food Bank and the merchants of downtown Glendale. Participants had the opportunity to taste, savor and enjoy the delicacies of Glendale’s finest eating establishments. Annually the largest fundraising event for Kids Cafe, the Food Bank’s children’s feeding program, the April 8 event at the recently renovated Wigwam resort attracted 220 golfers. With Jerry Colangelo serving as honorary chair, the tournament raised $140,000, a 20 percent increase over last year – and enough to provide more than 140,000 meals for children of families living in poverty. In the first decade of the tournament, the Kids Cafe Open has now collected nearly $650,000 – helping to allow the Kids Cafe program to move ahead with an aggressive expansion to double the number of daily meals distributed to hungry children. Featured Glendale eateries and restaurants included: Bitzee Mama’s, Bueno Burger, Dillon’s, Fajardo’s Café, Flemings, Haus Murphy’s, La Piazza Al Forno, Le Chalet, Let’s do Dinner, Max’s, Ninfa’s, Rock Bottom Brewery, Rubio’s, SanTan Brewing, Satara Thai Cuisine & Boutique Wine Lounge, The Melting Pot, Tuscan Oven and Zing. Those who paid for a special VIP area were pampered with private cooking presentations from Executive Chefs at Le Cordon Bleu and Heidi Lee from Into the Soup; succulent delicacies and jazz music. A great time was had by all and plans are already in the works to make next year’s event bigger and better. Golfers were treated to a Kids Cafe signature brown bag snack, drinks and a tournament golf shirt prior to the 7 am shotgun start. After the round of golf, everyone was treated to lunch and a performance by the Robey Elementary Honors Choir, whose children are recipients of the Kids Cafe program. Golfers also took part in a Titleist Concept Tent and a silent auction stocked with enticing donations from sponsors and friends of the Food Bank. Hunger 101 Program Offers Education on Food Issues St. Mary’s wishes to extend its sincere appreciation to the Kids Cafe Open Committee and the eagle sponsors: Money Radio 1510 AM, Salt River Project, Associated Assets Management, and Westside Sign*A*Rama, as well as par sponsors: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Arizona, Hickman’s Family Farms, Scottsdale Insurance Company, McLane Sunwest Company, Fry’s Food Stores, U-Haul, US Foodservice, Eaton & Associates and Sodexo. Did you know that one in four Arizona children live in poverty? Or that one in seven seniors routinely decides between paying for food or medicine with their limited incomes? Perhaps it is time for your church group, school or organization to learn more about the hunger problem in Arizona with a visit from St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance’s Hunger 101 program. Hunger 101 aims to promote public awareness and educate people of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds about the causes and consequences of hunger – and how each individual person can help fight it. Led by program manager Chet Provorse, Hunger 101 has representatives available to visit any school, club, organization, business or special function to talk about how to fight hunger in Arizona and to promote good nutrition. Programs are tailored to adults, elementary school children, and all those in between for an interactive, interesting and educational experience of what hunger really is. If you would like more information on the program or schedule a Hunger 101 visit, call Chet Provorse at (602) 343-3169 or check out the program information at www.firstfoodbank.org/hunger101. 9 Spring ‘11 NASCAR, AARP, and Jeff Gordon Team Up With St. Mary’s for Very Successful “Drive to End Hunger” St. Mary’s Welcomes Congressman Ben Quayle For First Visit to the World’s First Food Bank St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance was pleased to host Jeff Gordon’s No. 24 AARP/Feeding America “Drive to End Hunger” racecar at its University of Phoenix Programs Center on Feb. 24. Gordon fans posed for pictures with the car and a Gordon likeness, picked up posters and other Gordon memorabilia, and made food donations to St. Mary’s to help the hungry. To cap the event, the AARP Foundation presented a $10,000 check to St. Mary’s Food Bank – allowing the Food Bank to distribute enough food for 70,0000 meals – as part of the Drive to End Hunger campaign. St. Mary’s supporters were even happier three days later, when the former NASCAR Cup champion visited victory lane at Phoenix International Raceway after a long absence. Gordon snapped a 66-race drought and won the Subway Fresh Fit 500. With this victory, Gordon tied NASCAR legend Cale Yarborough for fifth on the all-time career wins list with 83. Gee, wonder what changed his luck? One in seven Arizona seniors lives at or below the federal poverty line and deals daily with the issue of hunger. More than 50 percent of the seniors relying on food assistance report having to choose between purchasing food or medicine on a consistent basis. As part of the AARP Drive to End Hunger, The AARP Foundation has joined forces with Feeding America to help solve the problem of hunger in older Americans. St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance opened its doors to a special visitor on Feb. 2: Arizona’s 3rd congressional district representative Ben Quayle. The newly elected Republican came to St. Mary’s for a tour of the facilities and to see first-hand how the world’s first food bank really works. Along with representatives of St. Mary’s and the Association of Arizona Food Banks, Rep. Quayle toured the Del E. Webb Distribution Center, where all of the donated food is organized, stored, and distributed, as well as the University of Phoenix Center, which holds the Agency Distribution, Community Kitchen, and Kid’s Cafe® programs. St. Mary’s would like to graciously thank Rep. Quayle, the son of former Vice President Dan Quayle, for his interest in the food bank and for taking the time to learn more about food distribution to the hungry of Arizona. Feinstein Challenge Helps Increase For more information about the Drive to End Hunger go to www.drivetoendhunger.org. 2011 Feinstein Foundation $1 Million Giveaway Challenge Donations Made to Food Bank in March & April St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance would like to thank all those who donated food and funds in the months of March and April in order for it to apply toward the 2011 Feinstein Challenge. Founded in 1991 by Alan Shawn Feinstein, the Feinstein Foundation is dedicated to the alleviation of hunger, the importance of community service in education and the values of caring, compassion and brotherhood. Alan Shawn Feinstein of the Feinstein Foundation donates $1 million annually to fight hunger across America. Amounts of grants are calculated by the total amount of donations each organization receives in March and April. The more donations St. Mary’s Food Bank received in March and April, the larger the Food Bank’s share of the Feinstein Challenged total can be. Both funds and food (valued at one dollar per pound) can be counted in the total. Last year, St. Mary’s received the largest share of any food-related charity from the Feinstein Challenge, more than $28,000. We’ll let you know how the Food Bank fared in the 2011 Challenge when the results are announced later this year. www.drivetoendhunger.org 10 Help Send Childhood Hunger Packing Coordinator embodies the spirit of St. Mary’s SEND HUNGER PACKING St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance has more than 150 employees who are dedicated to serving the hungry of Arizona every day. But sometimes, certain employees stand out for their compassion and willingness to go the extra mile for people who seek help. SNAP (Food Stamp) coordinator Cynthia Tesinsky works on a daily basis with clients who are nervous, unsure and confused about what help is available when needed, and Cynthia has been called “an angel” by St. Mary’s clients. Patiently guiding them through the process with a smile and comforting manner, she makes what is such an uncertain time for many people dealing with food insecurity for the first time a smoother and more comfortable experience. Sponsored by: For children living with hunger, summertime isn’t fun. One client called Cynthia “the most amazing person ever” and was overwhelmed by her patient manner. “I never needed to do this before and was embarrassed,” she said. “But she told me, ‘We all go through things like this and so many people are in the same situation.’ She just really helped me with everything and was kind and nice even when I didn’t have all the paperwork.” Away from school for several months, kids who would normally be able to eat free- or reduced-breakfast and lunches find themselves without access to those programs and their parents, who are already struggling to make ends meet and are having to make tough budget choices, now have increased childcare costs, energy bills and this year, high gas and food prices to juggle. From all your friends and admirers at the food bank and on behalf of your many adoring clients, thank you Cynthia for showing the spirit that defines St. Mary’s each day. For all of these reasons, St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance distributes more food during the summer months than it does even during the holiday season, while donations traditionally fall to their lowest levels because even the Food Bank’s most ardent supporters are away from town – or dealing with summer’s challenges themselves. Monthly Giving Circle The Food Bank’s summer awareness campaign, Send Childhood Hunger Packing, will kick-off on June 8 with a luncheon starting at noon in the Food Bank’s community room, housed in the new University of Phoenix Programs Center, 3003 W. Thomas Road, Phoenix. Join campaign sponsor US Airways in the challenge to meet the need and to assure that no child goes to bed hungry this summer. St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance It’s now easier than ever to join St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance’s sustained giving Program, the Monthly Giving Circle. Just log on at www.firstfoodbank.org and set your automatic donation to help the Food Bank. St. Mary’s distributes enough food for 275,000 meals every day around Arizona, and your gift is vital to that cause. But there is also some good news: Summer also means that Rock ‘N Box – St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance’s volunteer packing parties – are back! There is no better way for individuals, families and company groups to help their community and enjoy a great night of fun at the same time. Food and drinks will be provided before the event – along with a brief chat about how this event will help Arizona’s hungry. Then the music starts, the groove kicks in and as many as 150 volunteers begin sorting donated food and packing emergency boxes – a three-day supply of food designed to meet the immediate needs of a family or individual during a time of crisis. You never know who will stop by at a Rock N’ Box – local celebrities, sports figures and team mascots, everyone from beauty queens to politicians have been spotted in the past. Rock ’n Box will be held every other Tuesday Night in May (10th and the 24th), June (14th and 28th) July (12th and 26th), August (9th and 23rd) and September (13th and 27th) at St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance’s Del E. Webb Distribution Center (2831 N. 31st Avenue in Phoenix). The warehouse is open at 5 p.m. for food and the fun begins at 6 p.m. Packing sessions usually last about two hours. Registrations are now being taken for all eight Rock N’ Box events. Get your requests in early, because volunteers are capped at 150 for each event.
