Some of the topics discussed with the students were: how to get to and from school safely, school bus safety procedures, how to find a safe place to play, and the proper way to cross the street. The students enjoyed a fun conversation with one of the “cutest” autos in town: “Otto”. The students were able to engage in an exciting question and answer session with Otto. A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Albanese for organizing this safety event for our students. For more information and fun activities to continue to teach your children about safety in and out side of our homes and school, you can go to the following link: www.http://www.ottoclub.org CYO Sports By: Todd Oakley, Mike Winter, Emily Carella Over the last few weeks the OLS CYO program had its basketball tryouts. Page 2 Volume 1, Issue 1 Saying Goodbye to Yankee Stadium By Andrew Murphy On September 21, 2008, the final baseball game at Yankee Stadium took place. The Yankees played their first game at Yankee Stadium on April 18, 1923, beating archrival Boston Red Sox, 4-1. Over its 85 year history, Yankee Stadium has hosted a variety of events from the World Series to Papal visits. It has also hosted three all-star games, including the 2008 game. It has also been home to some of the greatest players in baseball history. In 1974, Monument Park was constructed to honor N E W P L AYG R O U N D …We will play on Our new playground!! It is the best ever!” We kicked off our New Playground Campaign with our Blue Ribbon opening last school year. The students, teachers and parents, worked very hard to raise money to make it a great place to play. Msgr. Gervasio also dropped a few dollars into our playground jar. Our dream finally came true at the beginning of this school year 2008. Everyone likes the new playground!! We all use it. It is basically different kinds of BY: Yankee greats. The National Hockey League debated on having an outdoor hockey game there in 2009, but they decided not to play a hockey game there. The Stadium is scheduled to officially close in February 2009. Yankees fan or not, it will be hard to say goodbye to Yankee Stadium. SAMANTHA LONG monkey bars and a stair-like piece of equipment. It is very popular because it’s a good way to stay in shape and have fun at the same time. A lot of people made this happen so our whole school could play on the playground on the first day of school. A special thank you to all of the parents and students for all of their hard work and dedication to our school. A special thank you to Mr. Flock for donating his time and equipment.. K N I G HT L Y N E W S Page 3 M Y T R IP TO HAITI – A T RU E STO RY It was day 18 and our vacation was almost over. We were homesick and ready to go back to New Jersey. Then we heard that a hurricane was coming, and our eyes opened wide. The island was so beautiful! How could there be a hurricane? But, sure enough, it started to rain. Then the rain got harder, and then the wind came. The river overflowed. Lucky for us, we lived on a mountain so the water didn’t affect us. I looked out the window and I saw the water rushing by. People were leaving their homes and running for their lives. At one point, the water got so high that we had friends come over because their houses were being destroyed. It was devastating. We tried not thinking about it. There was a little tin house next to us that we thought the wind would blow away because the wind was so strong. We prayed to God and our house was just fine. Two days later, the wind was calm and the rain passed. The sun came out, and we would be leaving in two days. We went for a walk by the river. By that time, it had dried up. You could see all of the houses it destroyed. There was a newlywed couple who had lost their house. All that was left was the back wall. Luckily that was the worst that happened to us because we were in the south. The hurricane wasn’t as bad in the south as it was in the north. We heard that kids were BY: B. ST. JOUR & J. KADUTHODIL dying and were being taken away by the water. I thanked God we weren’t in those conditions. There was so much destruction and loss of electricity. Later that day, the rain started again because there was another hurricane. The rain and wind came strong. I wondered if it was ever going to stop. It lasted for just one day. It was the night before we were supposed to leave, and it was still raining. I was packing my bags and I heard a man come in. It was our driver. He said we would be leaving right away. The bridge to get us to Port-au-Prince was collapsing. I hurried and finished packing. I was so scared. The next day we got to our destination, we were on our way to the airport, but the airport was closed and we were stuck. I wanted to cry. I was going to miss the first day of school. I was supposed to be back on 8/27, but we came on 9/4. The days went by slowly. It felt like I was never going home. Finally, 9/4 came, and I was saying goodbye to Haiti. I was on my way home. It was a very exciting time to listen to students’ opinions about who was going to win the World Series. OLS students take great pride in team spirit. As you know, the Phillies ruled the baseball diamond. They won The Series for the first time in 28 years. GO PHILLIES!! For every Nabisco wrapper and juice pouch recycled, our school will earn $0.02. OLS is collecting the wrappers and pouches during lunch. You can also wash them out at home and send them to Mrs. Winter (Computer Teacher). This is a great program that encourages kids to help the earth. Remember that small change can turn into big $$$$! Last year we raised about $32 in just two months with juice pouches alone! That was about 1600 juice pouches, but it all adds up. And we did it in seven weeks! If you want more information on this program, visit the school website and go to the RECYCLING link. So far to date, we have collected at least 3000 pouches and 500 cookie wrappers. Join the OLS green team and you can help our school and the environment! Your juice pouch and cookie wrapper trash is our CASH. www.OLSschool.us Page 5 Volume 1, Issue 1 Fall Fashion By: Emily Clark, Nina Carella, Leanne Consiglio, Cynthia Leavey, Caitlyn Sweeney, Elizabeth Kite, Dana Davies, Lianna Rossi HOT FOR GIRL’S HOT FOR GUY’S StoresStores Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister, Pink, American Eagle, Forever 21, Old Navy, Juicy Couture, and Aero Stores-Aberercrombie and Fitch, Hollister, Stores Nike, American Eagle, Models, Old Navy, Aero, and Pacsun TopsTops Baby doll tees and designer store tees TopsTops- Designer tees, Football and Basketball Jerseys ShoesShoes Uggs, and designer shoes BottomsBottoms Basketball shorts and designer jeans BagsBags Store designer bags like Coach, Ugg purse, Channel, Kathy Vanzeeland, Juicy Couture, Donney and Burke and Vera Bradley MakeupMakeup eyeliner, lip gloss (light pink), ShoesShoes Uggs, sneakers (Nike, Puma, DCs, Reebok, Adidas, Element) neutral eye shadow, blush, and mascara HairHair Short or long hair as long as there is a style to the cut Look this up to find out your skin tone……. http://www.ehow.com/ how_2126119_choose-makeup-complimentskin-tone.html http://www.fashion.about.com/fashiontips/teens An Election To Remember By: Stefania Zamparelli Election day, 2008 is here at last. Lights of the ballots are flaring, oh so fast! Democrats encourage Obama all the way, Republicans cheer McCain and crowds scream, “Yeah!” Time is running out for the campaigning is done, It is now time to see America’s next son. Oh, and people ask because people dare… How will our next leader help us fare? Halloween Terror By: Kyle Brisson and Steven Luciano It was a rainy Halloween night. A few kids had been trick-ortreating for hours and they were tired. So they decided to take a shortcut home through the old cemetery. They knew they had made a big mistake when they heard a horrible noise. They turned around and there was nothing behind them. They heard the noise again; they discovered that it was coming from under their feet. One of them could just barely hear it. The others had already run away because they were so scared. That one ran back to the others and decided to never speak of it again. The creepy voices were chanting, “Whoooo is out there!” A “Brief” Story of the First Thanksgiving This is the story of the first Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims sailed to a new world. The pilgrims meet some Indians. They took over the Indians. The Indians fought back but the Pilgrims were too strong. Finally, some one said stop! The Pilgrims and the Indians taught each other new trades and soon became friends. They both lived happily ever after and ate a huge feast together. They called this feast Thanksgiving. This is why we celebrate Thanksgiving. It is a time for feasting and friendship. Happy Thanksgiving from the Knightly News Staff. K N I G HT L Y N E W S Page 6 Movie Reviews By: Matt Camera and Andrew Auger BOLT High School Musical Madagascar 2 Release date - November 21, 2008 Starring – John Travolta and Miley Cyrus Release date – October 24, 2008 Starring – Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens Release date – November 7, 2008 Starring – Ben Stiller and Chris Rock Bolt is a story of a dog who is the star of a hit TV show. When Bolt travels off the set for the first time, he comes across some wild new friends and the hilarity ensues. The problem is, this doesn’t look very funny at all. Yes the trailer had its moments (the Hamster looks pretty funny) but overall this looks like a boring movie. Matt’s prediction – 30% (3/10) Andrew’s prediction – 40% (4/10) It’s the final installment of the High School Musical phenomenon. In this movie, all the main characters become seniors and get to live the ultimate dream of graduating from high school. This movie looks pretty boring to be honest because it’s the same thing every single time. I can guarantee I would be able to write the entire script for this film and it would look something like what is going to turn out. Matt’s prediction – 20% (2/10) Andrew’s prediction – 30% (3/10) The gang from the Central Park Zoo is back (and hopefully better than ever) in this second installment of the Madagascar series. This time the gang is lost in Africa, and they must adapt to the African life to survive, even if it tears them apart. I was a fan of Madagascar, and this looks like the same kind of movie. Yes the story will probably be bad and most of the jokes will fall flat with the older group, but the bright colors, wisecracking penguins and monkeys, cheap toilet humor, and the exuberant musical numbers will be enough to get the kiddies into the theater. So overall it will not be a pointless exercise, but a pretty successful one Matt’s PredictionPrediction- 60% (6/10) Andrew’s PredictionPrediction55% (5.5/10) Plan ahead Buy AMC Scrip Cards Check out the school website for more info. www.OLSschool.us Page 7 Volume 1, Issue 1 BLUE KNIGHTS ACTIVITY PAGE Try to fill in the missing numbers. Use the numbers 1 through 9 to complete the equations. Each number is only used once. Each row is a math equation. Each column is a math equation.
