Week 1
Headteacher’s Message
Continued
This week all local primary school children
in Year 6 were notified of their allocation
for secondary school. I am delighted to
announce that applications for places at Sir
Frederic Osborn showed an increase on
previous years. This confirms the growing
popularity of our school and the trust that
parents and carers are showing in us. I will
be writing to all our new entrants
explaining the support systems we have in
place to ensure that the transition from
primary to secondary school is the best it
can be.
Please do take the opportunity over the
next two weeks to view the fantastic
volcano display which is on show in
reception. Year 7 and 8 students have
been working hard on these and they are
a real testament to their application and
enthusiasm in this topic that we are proud
to share their
efforts.
A massive thank you goes to Charley
Holloway-Biddle 12A who has been
promoting the work of the Beat Charity.
Beat is the UK's leading charity supporting
those affected by eating disorders and
campaigning on their behalf. The charity is
dedicated to helping people with anorexia
nervosa, bulimia, binge eating disorder,
emotional overeating and other eating
disorders, and providing information to the
public about these conditions. Charley and
the Sixth Formers have been raising our
awareness of their work and raised over
£450 for the charity through our recent non
uniform day. The work of the charity can
be followed on their website

Last month, I took a picture of the
fountain in the town centre. When I
showed it to my mum, she said I should
enter it into a magazine she reads called
the 'Hertfordshire Life'. The idea of the
section of the magazine is that if you take
an impressive picture which you are
proud of or others think is good, you
email the editor and wait to see if it
appears in the next copy. So, I emailed
my picture with a caption to describe
where it was taken and what the weather
was like.
I waited in anticipation, I kept searching
my emails for any updates. None, but
then, I had a text from my Dad saying
"Well done!" I had done it. My picture
was in the magazine! I was so happy!
By Lauren Somerville 8F
Another thank you goes to Miss Wells’
Year 7 science group. Miss Wells had
become concerned at my kettle, which
kept furring up. The class were set the task
of investigating why this happens and what
things we could do to remedy the
situation. The students produced some
excellent scientific work and after
following their advice my kettle is no
longer furring up.

Young Ambassador Update
Netball
Well done to the Year 10 Netball Team who
competed in the Welwyn, Hatfield Partnership
Netball Games U15 tournament at Stanborough
School on Tuesday 23rd February. The girls were
able to show some brilliant passing and intercepting
play and team work, always cheering each other on
and being positive. Well done to Sir Frederic Osborn
School’s player of the tournament Mollie Hall 10E .
Well done to Mollie and the girls.
Year 7 Athletics Success
A huge well done to the Year 7 athletics squad who
competed in the Welwyn, Hatfield Partnership Indoor
Athletics Competition. A great effort and team spirit
saw Sir Frederic Osborn win 90% of their track events
ultimately ending in the girls coming a respectable 3rd
against a strong Bishops side. The boys won their
competition and are therefore through to the county
finals. We couldn’t be more proud of the team and all
the team spirit they showed to continue to cheer each
other on. The boy’s team attending the county finals
are: Eddie Corbit, Kyle Stride, Jamie Barker, Stephen
Buah, Kieron Packard, Jack Brewer, Jay Newman and
Paul Haggerty. Well done to both teams, another
huge SFO success! Also a massive well done to the
Year 9 leaders who represented SFO exquisitely.
Year 7 Athletics Squad
Volleyball
Well done to the Year 10 Volleyball Team who
competed in the Welwyn, Hatfield Partnership
Volleyball games in a tournament at Stanborough
School on Wednesday
24th February. Coming
up
against
tough
opposition, the boys
managed to claw back
an excellent draw with
Stanborough, making
the game finish 21-21!
The
boys
played
excellently with some
very close games and brilliant volley balling
techniques, tactics and formations used.
Well done boys and a massive thanks to School
Games Organiser Mrs Salter for organising, yet
another successful competition!
Girls Football Club with Watford Ladies Player
A fantastic opportunity for any girls wanting to
develop their football skills further or just have fun
with a development women’s footballer. Terri Harvey
is running a girls football club
every Thursday after school on
SFO’s all-weather pitch from
3-4pm. Every person taking part
needs shin pads and boots or
astro trainers. Terri has been
trained by some of the county’s
best coaches and she is giving
up her time to share her
expertise and tips that she has
learnt along the way.

World Book Day
GCSE PE Conference
World Book Day took place on Thursday 3rd March
and at Sir Frederic Osborn library we celebrated by
adding hundreds of new book titles to our stock. We
also gave students the opportunity to pick up book
vouchers which enable them to get £1 off an item at
their local bookshop. Student Librarians worked flat
out to get the new books ready on time. All students
had a major input into the choice of stock, some of
which are listed below:
On Friday 4th March Year 11 PE GCSE students
attended the Edexcel GCSE PE Students revision
Conference in London. The conference will benefit
the students with their forthcoming exams. The day
was fully interactive based on the Edexcel GCSE
specification. The students learnt how to improve
their practical skills and then analyse their
performance. They were given tips on how to move
their grades to the next level in a theory exam along
with a comprehensive set of revision notes.
Paula Hawkins – The Girl on The Train
Harper Lee – To Kill A Mockingbird
David Walliams – Gangsta Granny and Grandpa’s
Great Escape
Jamie Oliver – Everyday Super Food
J.K. Rowling – Harry Potter (Complete Series)
Jeff Kinney – Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Old School
Dan Howell and Phil Lester – The Amazing Book Is
Not On Fire
Joe Sugg – Username Evie
A valuable and informative day.
Mrs S Mitcherson
Deputy Headteacher
The vast majority of new book titles are compatible
with the Accelerated Reader scheme which every
year goes from strength to strength as an incentive
for reading.
Key Stage 3 students are awarded five merits for
each book quiz passed at 80% and above. All
students have a minimum target of 2 book quizzes
per term, with some passing as many as 42 since
September!
Key Stage 3 students have also been re-tested for
their reading age recently and I’m proud to say most
students have increased their result with several
Year 8 and 9 already reaching a reading age of 16.
Well done to all students for their involvement with
World Book Day and thank you for continuing to
support your child’s reading at home.
