But it was not always so. There is evidence that water was once much more abundant. Although the ice caps at the polar regions are mostly frozen CO2, there is probably water ice beneath the surface. Mars may once have had a much thicker atmosphere and consequently been warmer What happened to Mars’ atmosphere? Earth has a strong magnetic field which protects us from the solar wind – the stream of charged particles from the Sun What happened to Mars’ atmosphere? The magnetic field on Mars has declined over time with the result that the solar wind has stripped away much of its atmosphere When is Mars Visible ?
