To make this clear we have changed our name and we want to explain to you why we have
done this - with the wonderful assistance of Saatchi & Saatchi.
Over the 15 years of the Festival we have developed a wide variety of film based activities
and collaborations that we now offer year round. And why would we keep a secret about all
these important things that we are doing. So we have changed our name to UK Jewish Film
and we will be adding on to that title the various ‘building blocks’ of our new organisation.
There is much here that provides support for and beyond Jewish communities in London and
across the UK:

With our new title of UK Jewish Film we are taking on a more inclusive
role that will bring you year-round excellence. UK Jewish Film promotes
awareness of international Jewish life and cultures for a diverse
audience. We also provide a dynamic on-going forum for independent
filmmakers working with Jewish themes. However, the annual Festival
remains a huge focus of our identity and when something in life is so
important it is both a privilege and a joy to be able to pursue that
challenge.
Now in its 15th year the Festival continues to be a much anticipated
event for so many people. And this year our programme includes films
from 16 countries including Norway (Strictly Confidential); Russia (I Shall
Remember) and Poland (Joanna, My Australia, The Moon is Jewish), which
gives us a fascinating insight into the history and cultures of these
cultures. Israeli film remains a huge focus of our programme and we
are delighted to bring to the Festival Joseph Cedar’s impressive new
feature Footnote for our Bank Leumi (UK) Gala.
Each of the films that we invite to make up this unique programme
represents many years of work and dedication for the filmmakers
and their crews. It is a matter of huge dedication and determination
to complete a film and we commend our filmmakers for their
achievements. We feel enormously privileged to be able to enjoy this
hugely diverse cornucopia of films and plethora of talent that is
offered to us. We benefit when we retain the ability to sustain a sense
of wonder at the stories that these films bring to our screens. The
UK Jewish Film Festival brings you all this potential and again this
year we invite you to join with us to be both excited and entranced by
this programme of outstanding films. Thank you for being wonderful

Premiered at this year’s cannes Film Festival, starring double Oscar winner Sean Penn as
an ageing rock star who decides to find his father’s tormentor. From the opening moments
Sean Penn (The Tree of Life; All the Kings Men) is mesmerising in this comical and vulnerable
performance. When rock star cheyenne leaves his Irish country mansion and travels to
the US, on the impending death of his father, he lurches into into the highly unlikely role
of nazi hunter, taking over his father’s obsessional hunt for the man who humiliated him
in Auschwitz. What evolves is also a wry look at some key elements of troubled American
life, accompanied by stunning scenery and peppered with archetypal characters along
the way. Frances McDormand (burn After Reading; Fargo) is uniquely cast as cheyenne’s
uncomplicated wife of many years and David byrne’s appearance is a special cameo treat.
Sorrentino (Il Divo) proves that his talent as a director is both super cool and ambitious.

Fresh from its cannes prize-winning premiere comes the latest film by acclaimed
director and writer Joseph cedar (beaufort, Time Of Favor). cantankerous Professor
Eliezer Shkolnik (Shlomo bar-Aba) is a Talmudic scholar, who has laboured for years
in relative obscurity, whereas his ambitious son, Uziel (Lior Ashkenazi) has far greater
success. When a bureacratic mishap leads to Eliezer being informed he has won
a prestigious prize that was in fact intended for his son, the old man’s vanity and
resentment explode to the surface. As befits the academic context, words are the
star here: the dialogue bubbles with wry wit and cynical one-upmanship. Assured
direction with skilful editing keeps viewer sympathies shifting uncertainly between
the two bitter rivals. Occupying the ground between tragedy and comedy, and with an
epic score that elevates the story to a grand scale, Footnote is a subtle tale of ego,

It’s 1963 and Israel is still in its infancy. Eleven-year-old Aaron hunts for spies and
practices Houdini tricks with his friends. A thoughtful, poetic dreamer, Aaron is

odds with his uneducated parents. but as his friends seemingly mature around him,
and Israel heads towards war with Egypt and Syria, Aaron finds himself increasingly

A brilliant script with inspired biblical metaphors, The Flood is a
highly perceptive look at a family living under a deluge of pressure.
Everything is complicated in Yoni Rosko’s life. He is almost
13, extremely small and desperate to grow taller before his
approaching barmitzvah. Miri (Ronit Elkabetz) and gidi (Tzahi
grad), his dysfunctional parents are on the brink of divorce
when Yoni’s older brother Tomer, (Michael Moshonov – Lebanon)
an autistic boy who has been living in an institution for many
years, returns home when it is shut down. Whilst his parents
are incapable of looking after Tomer it is Yoni who becomes the
unwilling caregiver, using the rituals of the barmitzvah ceremony
and the framework of an abandoned boat as a life raft.
As they try to keep up appearances, the story of noah and the
ﬂood resonates throughout, and they gradually find a way to

Four Oscars, a fabled storyline of triumph over adversity and one of the most recognisable
soundtracks in film history: it must be chariots Of Fire, Hugh Hudson’s debut feature which
celebrates its thirtieth anniversary this year just in time for the London 2012 Olympics.
based on a true story from the 1924 Paris Olympics, this evergreen tale of british sporting
glory, produced by Lord David Puttnam and featuring nigel Havers as Lord Andrew Lindsay,
stars ben cross as Harold Abrahams, a young Jewish student at cambridge University, and
Ian charleson as Eric Liddell, a runner from a religious missionary family in Scotland. With
the virulent anti-Semitism of the 1920s british establishment on one hand and puritanical
disapproval of the church on the other, obstacles off the track prove more demanding than
those on it, but competing on the biggest stage, particularly when captured in super-slow
motion to soaring piano and electronics, brings very public vindication to them both. An

So many wartime films like their narratives to be broad-brush: beacons of individual heroism
among terror and sweeping arcs of good and evil. Habermann is resolutely none of these,
rather an engaging, morally complex take on World War II and the rapidly shifting loyalties
of wartime. Wealthy mill owner August Habermann, part of the centuries-old german
population of czech Sudetenland, is married with a young family to local czech beauty
Jana, and cares not a jot about nazis, the Resistance, or ideology of any kind. but when the
german army invades his small-town haven, the fact that he is german and his wife part
Jewish forces him to make compromises that place him at the centre of a violent spiral that
tears everything he knows apart. A brave cinematic exploration into the impossible choices
of war that throws revealing light onto an uncomfortable and little known

his attempts to treat a Palestinian child for a deadly immune deficiency, Somech
gave his agreement. The result is an exceptional film dealing with the extremes of

his dog, Mitzpah, when they took to the
road in October 2010, walking over 300
miles from Berlin to Hook van Holland on
a very personal journey. On Kristallnacht,
9th November 1938, the Nazis destroyed
the interior of the Westend Synagogue,
Frankfurt-am-Main, where Rabbi
Wittenberg’s grandfather, Dr. Georg
Salzberger, served as Rabbi from 1910
until the family fled to the UK in April
1939. However, the Eternal Light (the Ner
Tamid) continued to burn and this light,
which shone through the darkness and
turmoil of those dark days, symbolised
the hope which is still the essence of

‘pro bono’ lawyers Joshua Safran and
Nadia Costa endeavour to find justice
for the plaintiff Deborah Peagler,
imprisoned for over a quarter of a
century. In 1983 Peagler, a woman
brutally abused by her boyfriend, was
sentenced to a minimum of ‘25 years
to life’ for her connection to his murder.
When a new penal code was introduced
in California 20 years later, it finally
looked possible to review Peagler’s case
and so began a six-year legal battle.
The shocking statistic at the core of
Potash’s gripping documentary is that
80% of women in prisons in the US are
survivors of some form of rape, abuse or
domestic violence.
Safran, Costa and Peagler make
an unusual trio, but their combined
strengths are a unique blend of
emotional intelligence and integrity that
makes for compelling viewing, which
overshadows many traditional fictional

David tells the story of Daud, an eleven
year old Muslim boy growing up in
Brooklyn. As the son of the Imam of
the local mosque, he has to juggle his
father’s high expectations, the dynamics
of a conservative family, and being
different – even from his peers in the
Muslim community.
Through an innocent act of good faith,
Daud inadvertently befriends a group
of Jewish boys who mistake him for
being Jewish and accept him as one of
their own. While working together on a
summer project, a genuine friendship
is formed between Daud and Yoav, one
of the Jewish boys. Unable to resist
the joy of a camaraderie that he has
never felt before, David, as he is known
to the Jewish boys, gets drawn into a

disillusioned with mainstream Israeli
cinema buys himself a 16mm camera and
begins filming his Diary, a project that
what would turn out to be one of the
most distinguished films ever produced
in the country. For over a decade, Perlov
filmed the Israeli reality, he fused self
portraiture with memory, and the poetry
of everyday life with politics creating an
emblem of an historic moment. When
Channel 4 television heard about the
film they asked him to cut his material
into 6 x 52 minute parts and it is part
one that we are showing here. Focusing
on his wife and twin daughters, the Yom
Kippur war and a trip back to Sao Paulo,

once the owners of a vodka distillery
in the Ukraine, the stage was set for an

How To Re-Establish a Vodka Empire is
Edylstyn’s own account of his attempts
to retell his family’s story, and save the
village in which they once lived from ruin,
by re-branding the vodka still produced
there and launching it abroad. The

village of Susia in the windswept hills
outside Hebron has no mains electricity
or running water, and its six hundred
families live in tents or caves. The main
industry here is dairy production, but the
farmers have no means of refrigeration,

connect to local utility networks refused.
In a place where all Israelis are seen as
part of the conflict, one group of Israelis
decide make themselves part of a

Blues) follows members of Kibbutz
Shoval who protest inequality not
through demonstrations and slogans,
but through working with their hands.
For three years, using their expertise in
ecology and agriculture, the kibbutzniks
work alongside the residents of Susia to

1942 and the war is raging in a small
seaside town in occupied Southern
Russia. Half Greek, half Russian Vadik is a
thirteen year old who lives by the rules of
the street: wheeling, dealing and dodging
soldiers who think he is Jewish. When
his father, weak from his experiences
in a prison camp, returns, Vadik is
mortified that he doesn’t immediately
volunteer for the front like the other
heroic fathers, and despises his father
for what he thinks is cowardice. Little
does Vadik know that this lame, downtrodden man is in fact risking his life for
the underground, hiding Jewish children
from the Germans. As Vadik becomes
great friends with a boy that his father
saved, he realises his father was more
of a hero than in his wildest dreams.

with a contemporary reality. Weissensee
is the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe
covering over one hundred acres with
more than 115,000 graves ranging over
130 years of burial and memorialisation.
Whilst the city of Berlin is close by,
this haven of peace and seclusion is
surrounded by a jungle of trees and a
lush profusion of foliage. The cemetery,
which was never closed during the
Nazi era, miraculously remained in
Jewish hands. Today it is being lovingly
renovated, and the documentary is a
true celebration of the power of film
to capture and record a sense of awe,
that is bestowed on Weissensee by
a delightful array of local characters
who are working to bring about its

best actress awards for the role) goes to
church to pray for news of her husband
at the front. But she stumbles across
petrified eight-year-old Jewish girl, Rose,
who has somehow managed to evade the
Nazis who captured her mother. Joanna
decides to hide Rose in her flat but finds
herself faced with tough decisions as her
neighbours become suspicious and it is
increasingly unclear who can be trusted.
Matters complicate further when she falls
victim to a denunciation, and must contend
with the romantic advances of a Nazi
officer (Joachim Paul Assböck). Veteran
director Feliks Falk draws a commanding
performance from his cast, not least from
Sara Knothe who plays the young Rose, and
Piotr Sliskowski’s cinematography is stark
and elegant, helping to convey the tragic
power of this drama about righteous

understanding and finally friendship,
when they realise that the fragile
existence of each depends in a large

While the world may be eternally
grateful to Max Brod for preserving
some of the greatest works of 20th
century literature and transforming
Franz Kafka into a global cultural icon,
Kafka himself may be turning in his
grave. Kafka’s final wish stated that
“all that is left in my estate must be
burned completely, without reading”,
was famously disregarded by his closest
friend, and the rest is literary history.
However, nearly a century after Kafka’s
untimely death, the fate of his invaluable
manuscripts is at the heart of a heated
debate involving millions of dollars and
political wrangling between Israel and
Germany.
The film follows the manuscripts from
their initial journey in Brod’s suitcase
from Nazi occupied Europe to Israel,
to their current location, gathering
dust in a run down Tel Aviv apartment,
closely guarded by an unstable, eccentric
woman and dozens of cats. The result is
a twisted, bizarre detective story, whose
irony and absurdity would not have been
lost on the great man himself.

all the other factors that threaten to
pull them away from school and onto

Perlov’s compelling film is comprised
of layers upon layers of memory from
key witnesses at the Eichmann trial. He
decided to make the film partly
as a response to Alain Resnais
documentary, Night and Fog, which did
not explicitly examine the fact that the
Final Solution was aimed at destroying
the Jews. Perlov’s method is to use
simple interviewing techniques to
explore what effect the trial had on
witnesses, families of survivors and
other Israelis.
He approaches the trial as a formative
event that turned into a memory itself
- one that has a prominent place in the
Israeli experience even today.
The scene in which Perlov asks the Polish
photographer Henryk Ross to reveal how
he managed to take secret images of
the Lodz Ghetto is one that stays with
you for a long time. Other prominent

Canadian novelist Mordechai Richler
undoubtedly belongs in the pantheon
of Jewish giants who dominated North
American letters writing in the second
half of the twentieth century alongside
Saul Bellow, Philip Roth and Norman
Mailer amongst others. The archetypal
angry child of immigrants, raised on
a diet of comic books, the Talmud and
Isaac Babel’s tales of Jewish gangsters
in Odessa, Richler was, like his famous
colleagues, perfectly placed to shake up
the complacent post-war status quo,
changing the cultural landscape for good.
Feisty, contrary and predictable only
in his unpredictability, Richler rejected
easy categorization. This engaging film
manages to get under the surface of
this incomparable artistic voice, and
capture a personality which could just as
easily be charming, gentle and thoughtful.
Richler is best known for The
Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz and
Barney’s Version, both adapted into
award-winning films that will receive
special screenings at this year’s UKJFF,
and Solomon Gursky Was Here, shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1990.

Tadek’s mother reveals she is actually a
secret Jewish survivor of the Warsaw
Ghetto. She tells Tadek his dream has
come true and they are emigrating to
Australia – though this turns out to be
Haifa, Israel. When their mother fails to
find employment, Tadek and Andrzej are
dispatched to a kibbutz, and a culture
shock they’re ill-equipped to cope with.
Jakub Wróblewski is hugely watchable
and convincing as the young anti-hero,
whose angel face belies his precocious,
streetwise naughtiness. Both writer
Ami Drozd and co-producer Marek
Rozenbaum emigrated to Israel from
Poland which helps to bring authenticity
to this gentle, eye-opening film.

Straddling the fine line between comedy

Called “Britain’s Schindler” by former

children in the first six months of 1939,
running operations from a hotel room in
downtown Prague until the start of the

families and leave Israel for “better”
lives in America. Their mother, a divorcee,
is left alone in Israel with her two
bachelor sons, one straight, and the
other, Tomer, gay.
Exploring the politics of belonging,
displacement, and sexuality, the film
examines the hard decisions one family
has to make, and the intractable bonds
that unite them. Throughout, Tomer
frames this quest in terms of its
greater social and political significance.
Combining 8 and 16mm footage with
his own work of a decade, Tomer shows
how the strength of the Heymann
Family depends on forces greater than
the nuclear family itself. The result
is a powerful and intimate portrait
of one man, his family, and the world

The creepy confines of the woods provide the perfect setting for Rabies, Israel’s first ever
horror film. Co-directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado met when they were tutor and
student at Tel Aviv University, and Rabies was born of their shared desire to bring something
edgy and new to Israeli cinema. That it is their first foray into feature filmmaking, as well as their
country’s first step into the genre, would never be obvious from the assuredness on display in
this story of a game of murder engulfing a young couple, a pair of disaffected cops and a group
of tennis players who stumble into the traps of a vicious killer. Frightening, funny, moving and
often pessimistic, like all good horror films Rabies works as a societal critique while never losing

In this thought-provoking and moving

Martin Gilbert and anti-genocide activist
Stephanie Nyombayire, as they give a
voice to the 13 international diplomats
who saved thousands of Jews during the
Second World War. These “rescuers”
included Princess Alice in Greece,
Selahattin Ulkumen, a Muslim diplomat in
Turkey and Raoul Wallberg of Sweden.
Gilbert, who has written over 80 books,
travels by rail throughout Europe for
35 days with Nyombayire to speak with
descendants of some of the diplomats
and survivors. The pair are united by
personal grief: Gilbert breaks down
as he reflects on the deaths of his
own relatives during the Holocaust.
Nyombayire lost 100 relatives during the
Rwanda atrocities of the 1990s.
In this heartfelt film, which includes
footage from World War Two and
dramatic reenactments, Gilbert
examines the “mystery of goodness”
that motivated diplomats to help others.

Sharon Amrani was a talented young
Israeli director who died in a tragic
accident when he was only 31 years old,
two days before 9/11. Saddened by the
loss of such a young talent, film critic
Yair Raveh decided to create a film
to celebrate and explore who Sharon
Armrani was and what his future as a
filmmaker might have been. Alongside
interviewing family and friends, Yair
discovers a box of scripts written by
Sharon before he died and approaches
fellow filmmakers who studied with
him to bring these scenes to life.

and are taught Hebrew and various life
skills. Muslims and Jews, and others
from differing backgrounds, are brought
together, learning Hebrew and receiving
the vital emotional support they need.
The principals and the teachers do their
utmost to ensure that the children and
their parents, who are mostly immigrant
workers, are given the help they need in
their new lives. The film follows a number
of children who have encountered
genocide and severe poverty in their
lives and many who are fleeing from life
threatening situations. Despite the fact
that the needs of the children are so
great there is a sense of optimism that
pervades the school and the nurturing
environment brings a sense of hope
to all the students, helping them to
overcome the obstacles in their lives.

Maybe this is because Adam writes jingles
for toilet roll adverts, and Jonny’s favourite
party trick is to jump out of bin-liners onto
unsuspecting victims.

An Interview with Shlomi Eldar,
director of Precious Life
Shlomi Edlar is a war correspondent and
journalist for Israel’s Channel 10 News who
has covered the Gaza Strip for nearly twenty
years. He has a master’s degree in Middle
East Studies from the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem and wrote the book Eyeless in Gaza.
In 2007 he received the Sokolov Prize, Israel’s
most prestigious media award. Precious Life
(page 14) is his first feature documentary. The
session will be preceded by a screening of
Precious Life.
We live in a time where the majority of
documentary films try to tackle big social
issues in a very didactic and overly journalistic
manner favouring “the issue” above all else.
In this masterclass, Marc Isaacs and Yael
Perlov discuss an alternative way of looking
at reality. Using examples from their own
work and those of other filmmakers that
have inspired them, they will show how the
documentary film can be so much more than a
simple call to arms. What makes a good subject
for a film?; How do you find and work with the
people in your film?; What does it mean to have
a voice as a filmmaker?; How do you turn reality
into something more poetic?

exploration of Jewish themes in the UK film

The event will also mark the official launch of
the Pears Short Film Fund at UK Jewish Film
2012 and provide filmmakers with an opportunity
to ‘speed pitch’ and receive feedback on their
ideas to a film industry panel.
After a drinks reception, the second half of
the event is a ‘Speed Pitching’ session. Each
prospective applicant will be invited in front
of film industry professionals to present a
pitch of their project for a maximum of three
minutes. Once all the ‘speed pitching’ sessions
are complete, applicants will be invited back for
feedback on their pitch.

important films that the fund has helped
create since its inception five years ago:

“Perlov brought to Israeli film the tradition of
the documentary cinema, fusing theory and
practice. His greatness was in the fact that
his work was at the same time personal and
public, revealing and mysterious, intimate and all
embracing, as all great art is.” Uri Klein, Ha’aretz
David Perlov (1930-2003), was as one of
Israel’s most influential and groundbreaking
documentary filmmakers, yet his striking,
poetic and humane works are rarely seen
internationally. Fortunately for all serious
film lovers out there, Perlov’s films are now
lovingly restored and distributed by his close
family, and we are proud to present three
of his seminal works – the first chapter of
his masterpiece Diary (1973) (see page 20), the
haunting In Jerusalem (1963) (see page 20) and
the brand new Yad Vashem restoration of his
evocative Memories of the Eichmann Trial (1979)
(see page 29).
Perlov’s singular artistic vision has influenced
a whole new generation of filmmakers, not
least his own daughter Yael Perlov, editor
and producer of numerous documentary and
fiction films, and artistic director of joint
Israeli and Palestinian film projects Jerusalem
Moments and Coffee: Between Imagination and
Reality. We are delighted that Yael will join us

Mordecai Richler (1931- 2001) was one of
Canada’s foremost novelists, a controversial
and prolific journalist, essayist, satirist,
children’s author and scriptwriter. He grew
up in Montreal’s Mile End neighbourhood in a
working-class Jewish family. This setting would
provide fuel for much of his literary work, as
he painted a vivid picture of life as a Jew in
Montreal that alternated between affection
and ridicule, adding his distinctive voice to the
tradition of self-reflective Jewish writing in
North America crafted by contemporaries like
Saul Bellow and Philip Roth.

The UKJF is pleased to present a special
tribute to this unique and distinctive author
with the UK Premiere of a new documentary
about his life and work, Mordecai Richler: The
Last of the Wild Jews (see page 30) by Montreal
filmmaker and journalist Francine Pelletier. The
film will be screened together with The Street
(1976), short animation adapted from Richler’s
story, which was nominated at the 1977
Academy Awards for Best Animated Short.
The screening will be introduced by the
author’s daughter Martha Richler.

SKY FILM AWARD
UK Jewish Film has teamed up with Sky to create this new film
award celebrating excellence in international filmmaking on Jewish
themes. The six festival films in competition will be announced
on 22nd September 2011. A panel of film industry judges chaired by Barry Skolnick,
Creative Director of Sky, will announce the winning film during this year’s Festival.
THE SHORESH CHARITABLE
TRUST AUDIENCE AWARD
Established in 2009 the Shoresh Charitable Trust UKJFF Audience Award gives you,
our audiences, the opportunity to participate by letting us know your favourite feature
drama film and documentary films. Pick up a voting slip during the festival at one of
our venues. The winning films will be announced at the Closing Night Gala on Sunday 20
November.

The Pears Foundation Short Film Fund at the UKJFF 2012
For 2012 two grants of £10,000 are again being made available by the Fund for the
production of a short film or video – drama, animation or factual – with a Jewish theme
of significance to both Jewish and general public audiences and with a maximum length
of 10 minutes. The judging panel is drawn from across the British Film and Television
Industry and the scheme is open to all filmmakers resident in the UK.
The deadline for applications is 30th December 2011. The film or video is to be
completed by 31st August 2012 for premiere at the UK Jewish Film Festival 2012. For
