everyone has a story Annual Report 2015 Everyone has a story. Our lives are made up of a series of stories. Some of them might be big: graduations, marriages, births, vacations. But most of them are the small stories we live out every day. They’re the stories of the movie we went to see over the weekend, the afternoon we spent visiting with an old friend. They’re the stories of the things we decide to try, the friends we end up making, and the places that become part of who we are. At Heart Havens, people make their stories what they want them to be. Whether it’s learning a new craft, attending a community festival, or simply spending an evening at home with friends playing games, Heart Havens residents make choices every day that contribute to full, vibrant lives. Every Heart Havens life story is unique, but they all have one thing in common: empowerment. From our CEO Jennifer spends some quality time with Melissa at our Macleigh-Holland home in Virginia Beach. 2 What’s your life story? When you see that question, what do you think about? Do you think about the timeline of your life’s big events? Do you start thinking about opening lines — “It was a dark and stormy night?” At Heart Havens, we believe that, while big life events are certainly important, our life stories are really made up of the little things we live out each day. Maybe you like to spend your Saturday afternoons fishing or at baseball games. Maybe Thursday nights for you are karaoke nights. Perhaps you took a summer to learn to kayak with friends. While you might not list these small, individual stories on your life’s timeline, they are absolutely what make your life full, vibrant, and enjoyable. In 2015, Heart Havens residents did all sorts of wonderful things that contributed to their life stories. Some chose to give back to their communities, including through a dog food drive for a local animal shelter and collecting items for children in the hospital. Others participated in art shows and community plays. There were, of course, picnics, parties, and proms. All of these stories, from the smallest trip to the store to the biggest trip to the beach, made for some exciting life stories in our Heart Havens homes— and your support makes these stories possible! Though we are highlighting only two people we support in this annual report, every single Heart Havens resident has a wonderful story to share. You can keep up with us year-round by liking or following us on Facebook and Twitter. Thank you again for your support of Heart Havens. As always, if you’d like to schedule a Heart Havens speaker to give a program at your church or small group, please call us toll-free at (877) 442-8368. Jennifer Boyden, MA, QIDP Chief Executive Officer 3 Polly Polly’s stories all center around her home in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. She loves the mountains, and she loves being part of community events and festivals in Stuarts Draft and Waynesboro. At one of those festivals in 2015, she even got to meet a Minion! Her favorite thing, though, is hiking. She loves going to various parts of the Valley and seeing the different scenery and experiencing all types of nature. Whether she’s exploring the botanical garden at Ridgeview Park in Waynesboro or hiking to Crabtree Falls in George Washington National Forest, there’s always something new for her to notice, and she loves telling others about what she’s seen. 5 Steven Steven’s stories all surround some of his favorite things to do. He’s very well connected in his home of Winchester, where he attends church, participates in horseback riding, goes bowling, and more. But Steven especially loves the martial arts. He has taken some karate classes in the past, and even earned a black belt. He displays several awards and belts in his room, and he loves to talk about what he’s learned. His next martial arts adventure, he hopes, will be kickboxing classes at a studio that recently opened near the Saratoga home in Winchester. He’s excited about the possibility of learning something new and making some new friends! 7 Volunteers are Awesome! We love our volunteers! In 2015, volunteers had pizza parties and picnics with our residents, painted rooms, stuffed brochures, provided lawn care, and so much more. Many volunteers come from the United Methodist connection in the Virginia Annual Conference, but several volunteers from Catholic and Episcopal congregations also blessed us. We were proud to participate in Hands On Day with Hands On Greater Richmond. Volunteerism translates into money saved for us. In 2015, maintenance and repairs for our homes cost $47,882.66. Because of volunteers, that number is mostly large repairs, like flooring or appliance replacement. Without our dedicated volunteers, our maintenance costs would be much higher. Contributions from pizza parties and other visits are priceless! 8 Our Finances: Fiscal Year 2015 Income 8.29% 2.84% Virginia Medical Assistance Program $2,567,978 (76.16%) Program Service Fees $428,583 (12.71%) 12.71% Contributions and Grants $279,476 (8.29%) Other Income $95,645 (2.84%) TOTAL INCOME: $3,371,682 76.16% Expenses 1.31% 17.98% Program Services $2,593,537 (80.70%) Management & General $577,926 (17.98%) Marketing & Fundraising $42,358 (1.31%) TOTAL EXPENSES: $3,213,821 80.70% As good stewards of your generous gifts, each year Heart Havens provides for an independent audit with Pilc & Moseley, LLC, Certified Public Accountants. Thank you for your continued support! 18 Grant Highlights Heart Havens was proud to continue our partnership with Richmond Residential and SupportOne to create a career ladder for our direct support professionals! This program, funded by a generous grant from the Richmond Memorial Health Foundation, provides the College of Direct Support curriculum to help our staff move up in their careers. A grant from the Knights of Virginia (KOVAR) allowed us to update some of the furniture at three homes, while The Mary Morton Parsons Foundation generously funded several needed major maintenance projects. We also received a grant of new vans from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation for our Macleigh-Holland and Mary Beth Graff homes. 19 Board of Directors Erin Karnolt, Chair Lee Price, Vice-Chair Brian Berkey Bill Fuller Avi Hopkins Allen Langford Edward T.
