The drive meanders through green pastures with expansive views of coast and marshland along the way. This coast is a stop off point for many thousands of migratory birds each year. Remember that you share the road with cyclists and if you’re travelling by campervan stop off at Ray’s Rest; a popular spot that looks across the Firth of Thames towards the Coromandel Peninsula. This is a good route to take your time, enjoy the views and stop often to sample the creative wares on show. Fresh produce and seafood are sold from roadside country stores. Locals will be happy to tell you about the world-class snapper fishing in the Hauraki Gulf, and this is a good place to book a trip. Steeped in goldmining history, it is now a convenient service hub for the region, minus any big city bustle. It is a ‘crafty’ town proud of its heritage and connected to the natural environment with an expansive bush wilderness as its backdrop and many delightful shops with local produce, art and friendly service. A former gold mining boom town that once produced gold by the tonne, it has proudly maintained its heritage buildings and has an operational gold stamper battery and original tunnels that exist now only to preserve a fascinating insight to the past. The community has focused firmly on restoring the natural beauty of the hills that were subjected to the extractive industries of its pioneering past. Tham Th ames am e es Nearby Kauaeranga Valley is the best place to seek out campgrounds and bush walks which can be done as day trips or by venturing further up The Coromandel ranges and staying overnight at the large hut owned and operated by the Department of Conservation. The discovery of gold at Driving Creek in 1852 brought a boom to Coromandel Town, and the area has continued to flourish while retaining a rich stock of surviving heritage buildings. The Cor o om man nde dell The village has a unique character, soul and ambience reflecting art, heritage and its cultural importance to Iwi. While it can be said that the journey is the destination – arrive by ferry after a stunning journey across the Hauraki Gulf from downtown Auckland or by road on the winding Pohutukawa coast from Thames – Coromandel Town has much to offer. WHITIANGA & MERCURY BAY Te Whitianga-a-Kupe Located on the east coast of The Coromandel, Mercury Bay is an area packed with spectacular scenery, coastline dotted with islands, walks, inlets, remote bays and beaches, thermal hot springs, a marine reserve and native birdlife. Its main town of Whitianga is short for Whitianga-o-Kupe (Kupe’s crossing place) after Kupe the explorer who visited Aotearoa (New Zealand) before the canoe migrations. W ittia Wh iang ngga & Me Merc rccur uryy Ba Bayy Steeped in maritime history, Mercury Bay was also visited by the expert Polynesian navigator and high priest Tupaia with Captain James Cook, whose crew first sighted New Zealand from his ship the Endeavour in October 1769. It was on this first voyage that Cook visited Mercury Bay and named it to mark the place where his expedition observed the transit of the planet Mercury in 1769. The town of Whitianga is the main hub of Mercury Bay and has everything you may need to stock up on provisions before venturing out to explore the more remote and smaller coastal villages including Kuaotunu, Matarangi, Opito and Otama to the north and Hahei, Cooks Beach and Hot Water Beach to the south. Kayaking, diving, snorkelling, swimming and walking are perfect ways to explore the beauty of the area before enjoying the natural hot springs at Hot Water Beach and The Lost Spring thermal resort in Whitianga. Tourism providers in this area make up a quarter of the AA’s list of Top 20 ‘must do’s’ as voted by New Zealanders in 2011 including positions 4, 6 and 9 on the nationwide list. 10 The Cor orom om man ande dell de WHITIANGA i-SITE Visitor Centre Must Do’s lk th dral Cove Wa + Cathe al Spa + Natural Therm ach + Hot Water Be ach + New Chum Be + Scenic Cruises elling + Diving & Snork s ove Gr + Kauri www.thecoromandel.com 66 Albert Street, Whitianga Phone 07 866 5555 www.whitiangainfo.co.nz TAIRUA Tairua and Pauanui on the Pacific Coast are excellent bases from which to explore the east coast and offshore islands, or the craggy mountainous backdrop to the west of these settlements. They also have a small but vibrant permanent population eager to accommodate visitors seeking that special brand of kiwi hospitality and local knowledge. Tairua is dominated by Mt Paku, which has a walk to the top affording 360° views of ocean, islands, harbour, mountains and the towns of Pauanui and Tairua. Both these settlements have surf beaches – though very different in nature. Tairua has slightly coarser sand, steep dunes and a sometimes dumpy shore break that’s not for the faint-hearted. The Cor o om man nde dell The Coromandel Forest Park and Tairua Forest bordering the town offer short walks, mountain bike trails and old gold mining sites to be explored. Like other parts of The Coromandel, the hills around Whangamata were extensively logged for Kauri in the 1880s. The 1890s to 1920s saw intense activity as goldmining in the Wentworth, Wharekawa and Parakiwai Valleys developed, establishing settlements of several hundred people. WAIHI & WAIHI BEACH Waihi, New Zealand’s Heart of Gold; Whether it’s exploring our gold mining heritage and the modern mine, getting out into the magnificent bush-clad hills of the Karangahake Gorge, or just relaxing on the beautiful white sand of Waihi Beach, the Waihi region is a great place to experience New Zealand’s great outdoors. Waihi township is the heart of the area. As you explore the town centre you’ll find glimpses into our hard fought, pioneering past as you step back in time and meander through yesteryear in today’s pleasant setting. Waihi’s main street is full of great cafés. What better way to round off your Rail Trail day than to sit and relax with good coffee, good food and good friends. It was the quest for gold that first brought people to Waihi in numbers. In 1878 gold-bearing quartz was discovered on Pukewa spur. A decade later, Waihi was the fastest growing town in the Auckland Province with a population three times that of Hamilton. The mighty Martha Mine quickly became one of the most important gold mines in the world. Today, Waihi’s huge working open pit gold mine is only metres from the centre of town. And you can walk right to the edge and stare hundreds of meters down into the chasm. 14 Th Cor The orom oman om a de an dell WAIHI i-SITE Visitor Centre Must Do’s y Centre + Gold Discover ne Tours Mi ld + Waihi Go ritage Railway + Goldfields He ntre & Museum + Waihi Arts Ce Walkway Rim Pit + Waihi g & Cafés + Waihi Shoppin ry at Waikino + Victoria Batte Trail + Hauraki Rail Gorge Walks + Karangahake & Cafés imming + Waihi Beach Sw & Surfing lage & Cafés + Waihi Beach Vil www.thecoromandel.com 126 Seddon St, Waihi Phone: +64 7 863 6715 www.golddiscoverycentre.co.nz PAEROA Te Paeroa-o-Toitehuatahi Paeroa is a tight-knit and caring community that was awarded with the honour of Community of the Year at the 2012 New Zealander of the Year Awards, topping 70 nominations from around the country. With many great antique stores to mooch through, Paeroa is the selfproclaimed Antiques Capital of New Zealand and home to the therapeutic spring water discovered in the 19th century. This water, mixed with lemon, was manufactured into New Zealand’s very first own natural soft drink: “Lemon and Paeroa” which made Paeroa “World Famous in New Zealand”. Paeroa is a great base for exploring The Coromandel, the Karangahake Gorge and the recently opened Hauraki Rail Trail. BEACHES throughout The Coromandel Region For somewhere so conveniently close to three major North Island cities, The Coromandel can still feel very much off the beaten track. It may have something to do with its numerous and diverse beaches – from quiet coves thick with shells and framed by sculpted cliffs, to sweeps of white sand and steep dunes with surf rolling in from the Pacific. Our beaches are manned only in the peak of summer by surf lifeguards – many of them volunteers – and the coast guard that assists boaties when in trouble are also voluntary. It’s a system that works because all of this volunteer effort is for the good of the environment and the people enjoying it, and that’s what makes this place so special. The northern end features a one hour walking track that leads along the cliff top before descending to the majestic Cathedral Cove. Cathedral Cove can also be accessed from a car park at the top of Grange Rd. Named for its gigantic arched cavern that passes through a white rock headland to join two secluded coves, the cathedral-like arch gives the whole area an air of grandeur, while the sandy beach is framed by Pohutukawa trees providing shade for a picnic. A little way off the beach at Cathedral Cove is a large pinnacle of pumice breccia rock known as ‘Te Hoho’. Over centuries this has been sculpted by wind and water. It now looks like the prow of a large ship steaming into the beach. Cathedral Cove is a must-see on The Coromandel. Cathedral Cove HOT WATER BEACH Te Puia Hot Water Beach is a truly unique experience where two hours either side of low tide you can bathe in a hot pool that you’ve dug yourself. Spades can be hired in the local café and general store. Dig around to find a hot water source – and beware that temperatures can be scalding hot - before lying back to soak up the surroundings. There are three car parks at Hot Water Beach from which you can enjoy walks along the beach and through the small township, which features an excellent camp ground, café and art gallery and other quality accommodation. Access is off State Highway 25 at Whenuakite. It’s the only notable turnoff and directs you to Hot Water Beach, Cook’s Beach and Hahei/Cathedral Cove. It’s little surprise Hot Water Beach was named among the top 10 beaches in the world by the Lonely Planet Travel Guide. Hot Water Beach SURFING With more than 400km of coastline, The Coromandel has always attracted surfers from nearby cities on weekends, holiday times and over the occasional widely-anticipated big swell. Many have been lured into settling permanently, forgoing the hustle of city life for a more flexible, if less lucrative, working week where they can sneak out for a dawnie or lunchtime session with only a friend or two in the water – particularly in winter. The Coromandel’s selection of waves vary in character from playful beach breaks to a world-class point break. Whangamata is the country’s best-known east coast surf town, steeped in surfing heritage. You can hire a board in Whangamata, Pauanui and Hot Water Beach among other towns, but the serious surfer won’t want to arrive unprepared and suffer the torture of standing on the beach while the Pacific Ocean delivers lines of swell and pumping waves. Surfing in Whangamata FISHING & DIVING With around 400km of coastline and over 100 offshore islands, The Coromandel is one of New Zealand’s favourite marine playgrounds. It boasts some of New Zealand’s best quality fishing within a relatively small area. With an East and West Coast, plenty of bays and islands for protection you can be sure you will find somewhere to fish, dive or snorkel. No matter what your interest whether it’s in surfcasting from the beach, sitting amongst mussel farms, live baiting or heading further a field to chase that elusive game fish, The Coromandel offers plenty of choice. The snorkelling and swimming opportunities in Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve are plentiful, especially in the shallow waters around Stingray Bay (Te Karaka) and the western side of Mahurangi Island. Gemstone Bay (Waimata) has a snorkel trail marked by buoys that illustrate the marine habitats and associated species that live beneath. Mussel Barge Fishing MIGRATING SHORE BIRDS The Seabird Coast is an important wintering ground for thousands of Arctic nesting Shorebirds. Many arrive exhausted and hungry at the end of the last leg of their epic journey from Eastern Siberia and Alaska. The Seabird Coast also plays an important role in migration systems within New Zealand. Each year huge flocks of Pied Oystercatchers return after breeding in the South Island. It is ranked as one of New Zealand’s three most important areas for shorebirds and annually hosts more than 49 different migratory bird species, numbering 20,000 individuals. The ‘Muddy Feet’ project is a joint initiative of local and regional councils, iwi and the Miranda Naturalists Trust to address habitat loss and degradation and is working with the community to protect this significant and special place. Migrating Shorebirds, Seabird Coast KUPE & COOK The Coromandel can boast to being one of the few areas in New Zealand to have been discovered by two of the world’s great navigators, Polynesian explorer ‘Kupe” and European explorer Captain James Cook. The first Polynesian explorer to sight The Coromandel was reputed to be Kupe, travelling from eastern Polynesia in around 950 AD. Aboard his mighty canoe, Matahorua, he sailed for two weeks until he sighted what was later to be called Mt Moehau. Te Whitianga a Kupe was the original place name for Whitianga, meaning Kupe’s crossing place. Captain Cook sailed into the Mercury Bay on the 3 November 1769. Cook’s ship “Endeavour” was met by Ngati Hei canoes on arrival in the bay. Seven days later, on November 9 1769 Cook observed the transit of the planet Mercury across the face of the sun, hence the names of some of the region’s beaches and bays - Mercury Bay and Cooks Beach. Cook also sailed into the Firth of Thames and spent two days on the Waihou River. www.thecoromandel.com Lonely Bay GOLDMINING Gold boom, dark financial depression and a long uphill climb back to prosperity is how the first 100 years of Thames has been recorded. Thames had a small beginning with the first official strike of gold in June 1867. The ‘big bonanza’ was between 1869 and 1871. In 1871 the top producing Caledonian Mine turned out 361,581 ounces – more than 10 tonne - with a total value of about $1,950,000. In the late 1870s people flocked to the Waihi area in search of their fortunes. The mine we now know as Martha Mine soon became one of the most important gold and silver mines in the world. Now in its third century of mining, Waihi remains a gold town and its mines still produce most of New Zealand’s gold and silver bullion. Many relics of The Coromandel’s gold-mining history are still evident today, such as the Victoria Battery at Waikino, the Crown Mine at Karangahake, the Stamper Battery in Coromandel Town and the Stamper Battery and The School of Mines in Thames. Woodstock Battery, Karangahake Gorge KAURI HERITAGE Kauri logging was one of the major industries in early pioneering days of The Coromandel. A lasting reminder of the once-thriving kauri industry are relics of the kauri dams which are visible on various Coromandel walking trails. There are still stands of kauri that were left untouched by the early pioneers and can be seen at relatively short distances from the road. The 6th largest kauri in the country, Tanenui, is growing at Manaia on The Coromandel. In the past 10 years, kauri dieback has killed thousands of kauri in New Zealand. Human activity involving soil movement - such as on footwear, machinery and equipment - is thought to be the leading cause of the disease spreading. Kauri dieback has been detected on The Coromandel, we need everyone to do their bit by cleaning boots before entering forest areas. Look out for the boot-cleaning kiosks that will help stop the disease - officially known as Phytophthora Taxon Agathis or PTA. www.kauridieback.co.nz 309 Kauri Tree THE PINNACLES The stunning Kauaeranga Valley, located upriver from Thames is one of New Zealand’s true hidden treasures. Of the many popular historic walks in the foothills of the valley, the Pinnacles walk rates as one of New Zealand’s most popular overnighters, with an 80 bed DOC hut often booked out well in advance. The track is steeped in Kauri logging history. Remnants of the logging days can be seen on the track and in fact, the track itself follows the old packhorse track that took supplies up to the kauri loggers working and living in the hills. Giant kauri stumps, abandoned logs, kauri dams and old tramlines can also be seen on this walk. With much-improved road access nowadays, driving The Coromandel is easier but just as much fun. Why not start your Coromandel experience on the 360 discovery ferry from downtown Auckland?
