By Adam Dewar One of the worst curses of human nature has got to be ambiguity. These days, ambiguity is everywhere. Taking a walk down the hall one routinely hears someone talking about “neat stuff” or “things”. Well that sure is nice but what exactly are those things, one might ask. Sure, this is Mr. Plato’s life long crusade to save the English language from a bunch of yuppies that continually bastardize it from stem to stern. Inserting the word like where it does not belong is just another one of these pleasant examples of just how little people in our world think about their language these days. Let us look at this from the angle of a world leader. If tensions between India and Pakistan are particularly high and the president of Pakistan sends a letter to the Prime Minister of India saying “await stuff”, how does the Prime Minister interpret this? Is the “stuff” a war or perhaps a Trojan horse? Is it an ornament? Perhaps it is some documents. On second thought, it would be safest just to attack Pakistan. In reality, the President of Pakistan just wanted to send the Prime Minister a copy of his biography. Perhaps ambiguities would never cause a situation to get this extreme, however, my point is that being ambiguous allows others to take whatever they choose from you. If you talk about “things” with your friends, they could simply take this to mean that you are interested in a relationship, or worse, going skydiving. I’ve always assumed that when these words were used, their meaning became implied by the conversation that was taking place. So off I went to ebay, where I searched for “thing”. Well would you look at that, 85, 000 different responses! Everything from an ugly action figure to a nutcracker to a copy of the bible popped up. I even found vacuum cleaner linings! So this is what things are? They are extremely ambiguous, anything can clearly be a thing. Well I really did learn something new today. I am a thing, you are a thing, any object, person, animal, or other apparition that resides in our environment constitutes a thing. How on Earth do we go about saving our language? Is it beyond repair? This is not about creating new words; this is actually allowed and should be encouraged. However, the misuse of words, and the injection of ambiguities into everyday speech where they do not belong is what threaten the language. I know of some teachers at this very school who are passionately in love with the words stuff and things. One teacher even refers to the worksheets in their title as “things”. Ambiguity is a fool’s game which can produce any number of unanticipated consequences, so my message to you is watch yourself. Anything that can be construed as ambiguous should not be used in your speech. After a while, it becomes a habit and before you know it, you too will join the ever-growing league of ambiguity police attempting to save the English language from itself. Report The Facts. Respect Our Readers Issue 4 Principal’s Message June 2006 Staff and students are in pre-exam mode and soon we will be packing up lockers and books for another school year. Please note some of the information included here as we start to plan ahead for school year 2006-07. Prom and Graduation 2006 We are pleased to announce the celebration of a very important milestone for our Graduating Class of 2006. We are very proud of our grads and their many accomplishments. We look forward to sharing the day at the Dartmouth Sportsplex on Thursday June 29 @ 2 p.m. Tuxedos and dresses, corsages and hairdo appointments will be all the rage in the next few weeks as we get ready for the Prom and Safe Grad on Tuesday June 27 all night at the Marriott Halifax Harbourfront. Parents are welcome to come out and view the regalia at the Grand March at the beginning of the evening! Veteran’s Memorial Unveiling: We wish to express our gratitude to all the HRSB Operations staff and our many community partners who have supported the vision of a stained glass veteran’s memorial installation at CPA. The memorial will be unveiled in a special ceremony at the school’s main foyer on June 15. Summer Communication Package Information for students about school year 2006-07 will be available on the web-site in August and you should receive an orientation package in the mail in late August. Please review the forms and instructions in detail to help you prepare for opening day. Summer School Summer School- Students who wish to enroll in summer school courses please check the web-site at www. hrsb.ns.ca Options And Opportunities Parent Information Recently the government of Nova Scotia announced a new educational initiative called Options and Opportunities (O2) for high school students. O2 is a comprehensive educational program that is designed to address a number of needs and issues facing our students. The Goals The goals for the O2 program are for students to stay in school and graduate with a career plan, transition to community college, youth apprenticeship and/or work. The components of the program are community learning partnerships (internships, work placements, co-op), integrated career education and planning, skills for the workplace (First Aid, Whmis), and instructional teaming. How is O2 Different? The O2 Program is a three-year program with the career themes of trades, technologies and tourism. The program will meet all the graduation requirements of the Nova Scotia curriculum and will offer additional credits in Cooperative Education (community based learning). A sequence of courses taken over a threeyear period provides both focus and direction to a student’s learning experience. This system of coordinated courses and experiences is designed to synchronize educational goals with employment needs of the future. Editor’s Message Alright, the last issue of the paper is finally here and it’s a good issue. Actually, it’s four months’ worth of submissions, so you’ll have a lot of stuff to read and enjoy. It’s also my last issue as the editor. Next year, Christophe and Sarah will take my place and they’ll definitely do an amazing job to keep everyone interested in the Cheetah Perspective. By Lisa Senger Our musical this year, Fiddler on the Roof, was an amazing performance because of all the people involved. The whole cast did a great job because most of them were not only actors but at the same time singers and dancers too. It was impressive to watch the actors successfully imitate the accents of the Jewish people. In addition, the singing and dancing from the young cast showed the high level of experience. Mrs. Dompierre truly created an unforgettable production of Fiddler on the Roof by choosing the great cast and by finding all those amazing costumes and props. Of course the musical could not have been such a success without our wonderful pit band which created an amazing atmosphere and worked perfectly with the actors. Mrs. Penwell and the entire pit band, like the cast members, practiced countless times before the show. This dedication definitely created the fantastic performances. Furthermore, the backstage crew that helped to set up the stage and change props during scenes needs to be mentioned because they all contributed to the success of Fiddler on the Roof. All people involved in the musical did great work and we as Cheetahs should be thankful that they all spend their free time practicing in order to give us the chance to see an amazing musical performance. Thank you all very much and hopefully next year most of you will participate in the next musical. 30 Hour Famine Success Hello CPA! I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who was involved with this year’s 30 Hour Famine. Thanks to staff volunteers, student participants and the generosity of local businesses, we were able to raise over $3000 for underprivileged children all over the world. I would like to especially thank the 30 Hour Famine committee members, Molly Barkouse, Courtney Wood and Kristie Forbes, whose dedication made the event possible. On behalf of the committee, I would like to express our gratitude to all teaching and custodial staff who sacrificed their time off during the weekend for this event. Without you, the famine would not have been possible. A special thanks especially to Mrs. Campbell, Mr. Young and Mr. Deslaurier and their homeroom classes for their outstanding fundraising efforts. This year’s famine also incorporated a Battle of the Bands to determine who will represent CPA in the multi school battle, Tone Deaf. This year, CPA will be sending the Gamma Gamma Rays to the competition. Thank you to the other bands who came who came out, you were all fantastic! Local businesses provided support for our participants and donated prizes for our fundraising classes. On behalf of CPA I would like to thank Pete’s Footique, M&M Meat Shops, On the Wedge Pizza, Dairy Queen, Smith Books and The Source. Thank you for supporting the youth in your community and taking a stand against hunger, poverty and injustice. You can be that generation.” -Nelson Mandela The Cheetah Perspective Page 6 The Seasons of Friendship By: Danielle Delano Lately, I’ve been talking a lot and thinking a lot about a few forwards that people have been sending me about friendship. I believe in every word of them. I believe that people come and out of your life for a reason, sometimes people have reoccurring roles, or a one-time cameo. Not all of the reasons are good but they help keep the memories in place and make them real. I’ve had a number of friends who have taught me things about life, about myself and about the world around us. Friendship is almost like a buried treasure because you can never really know what will come up and be found in a friendship. Sometimes it can be a horrible relationship like a pile of rocks or it can be a pile of gold. Life isn’t always easy, it isn’t suppose to be. What good would it be like if we all just flew through life on a wing? What would we learn? What would we know? Who would we be? Forward 1 Sometimes in life, you find a special friend; Someone who changes your life just by being part of it. Someone who makes you laugh until you can't stop; Someone who makes you believe that there really is good in the world. Someone who convinces you that there really is an unlocked door just waiting for you to open it. Forward 2 People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person. When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. Around CPA March-June 2006 Seek The Truth. Report The Facts. Respect Our Readers Issue 4 The Seasons of Friendship (cont’d from page 6) They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on. Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn has come to share, grow or learn. They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it, it is real. But only for a season.! LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons, things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant. Respect Our Readers Issue 4 Education Overhaul By Sacha O’Regan A high school environment is comprised of a myriad of programs that contribute to a positive and stimulating experience for every student. This is the main reason why high school is something that all elementary and middle school children look forward to. I mean, you have more freedom, more sports teams, more clubs, a wide selection of courses that you are able to choose yourself. Wait…hold on…did I say selection of courses? Sorry, I was being delusional there for a second. I was picturing a high school that wasn’t under the direction of a school board which seems to have a secret plan to cultivate more scientists, historians, mathematicians and symphonists than anywhere else in the country. At least, that’s my educated hunch. Bluntly put, if your career interests don’t fall in the environs of the aforementioned careers and your talents are academic but not “academic”, well, plan to be bored because there is not a whole lot waiting for you in high school in terms of courses. And that, considering Charles P. Allen is such a spirited and athletic high school, is a fact I find incomprehensible and intolerable. Last year, on the day of RIOT, a member of the municipal government spoke to the school about the state of Bedford/Halifax’s finances. I’m paraphrasing here, but he made one particular point along the line of “We need to expand the trades sector and to do this we are trying to develop more trade programs.” The irony: he was likely standing before many of Nova Scotia’s future trades people. However, he neglected to mention or perhaps was oblivious to his audience’s involvement in achieving the latter objective. After all, high school is the first building block in creating a more diverse trade sector. Yet, what specifically trade-aimed courses does Charles P. Allen have? Umm… none. Where is Manufacturing, Transportation, Construction, Tourism or Technology? Not here. And what about a Co-op, a course in which students gain educational experience by working in a work place of their choice? CPA is strong in the sciences and math, however, courses outside of these subject areas are very scarce. I assure you that it is unlikely any person in this school has not experienced the frustration and disinterest that inevitably accompanies course selections. And if someone hasn’t experienced it, they have surely witnessed the ordeal of a friend debating whether to choose a course that touches vaguely on their interests or a course that is more recognized by academia, but so far removed from their individual interests. For next year’s incoming students, they are implementing a program called the International Baccalaureate which provides students with a more advanced academic background prior to entering a post-secondary institution. While an improvement to the existing system, it fails to address one essential need: diversification. There should be courses such as anthropology, philosophy and psychology. There should also be marketing, accounting, advertising and photography, hairstyling/aesthetics, fashion, and architecture, not to mention international languages. Note, for a school of very diverse ethnicities, there are no subjects offered in other languages. By not offering courses that take advantage of modern industry and commerce, you’re not supporting the talents of an entire spectrum of individuals from the school community. Not only does the current course selection offered by the Halifax Regional School Board and Charles P. Allen limit a students ability to experience and explore career opportunities prior to graduation, is it also diminishes the overall high school experience and reduces the potential for Nova Scotia’s future economic growth. For example, the Nova Scotia government has set a goal to increase immigration to this province. While this might be achieved, how does the province expect to keep people from taking the next train back out again when they learn that these pastures aren’t as green as they could be? In fact, I’ve had personal experience with two families in the past year who have decided to leave Nova Scotia for reasons to do with education. The excuse tirelessly exercised in defense of this emigration and brain drain is that Nova Scotia is a have-not province. Well, it seems to me that it should be the other way around. Making the necessary sacrifices to develop Nova Scotia’s potential from the ground up, starting with education, will only result in improvements. However, since the minimum standard has become a cozy comfort level, many don’t dare to breach. It will take more than one voice to get the message across to both provincial and federal government. Respect Our Readers Sudoku Issue 4 Society in My Point of View By Shane Malloy Today’s society has been deteriorating since ancient times. Men in ancient times were so greedy that they wanted to see themselves as greater than any other creature, even women. That greed has not changed. Men thought they were so superior that they treated women badly. Thankfully, our ladies aren’t treated so badly anymore. Men were bad all right, but they didn’t act alone. Women were just as greedy for power as men and when they got it, they were selfish with it. People were so greedy for power that their greed helped to bring about the destruction of many great ancient empires. Then money came along and people knew they could use money to get power so they were nearly as greedy to get it. People are still greedy for money today but their reasons for wanting it have changed. I find it ironic that people want money that is printed by governments that claim they are working “for the people”. If they really had the peoples’ best interests in mind, they would abolish the gap between rich people and poor people instead of increasing it by giving some people more money. Why is society getting worse and worse? People are generally greedy hypocrites. People nowadays want girls to wear skimpy clothes so they can look “sexy”. Why do modern women want to look sexy anyways? Because their boyfriends want them too! They wear it because the men they love like how they look in it. They are selling themselves out. It is these same women who are fighting for equal rights. We say we believe in equality but because we are so greedy, what we really believe in is sucking up to people who have what we want and not giving a care about anyone else. If we really considered ourselves equal, we wouldn’t envy people of a higher social class such as Bill Gates or the Queen of England. If aliens were to look closely at our planet, they would see that wild beasts had accomplished more than we have. We call ourselves civilized but if we really were, we wouldn’t be fighting wars over land and oil. We also say that we want no religion in our schools yet we have our students follow laws that are based on religious morals. My point of view is that people are generally hypocritical. Report The Facts. Respect Our Readers Issue 4 Sending the Message By Halah Shahin Hey, in a previous issue of the Cheetah Perspective, you guys wrote about the caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed. You talked about how it was nothing more than freedom of speech and only cared to mention all the negative ways Muslims reacted. I think that when writing about an event, one must consider and discuss the different views of people and give some background information so the reader can gain a better understanding of the event so as to avoid bias. First of all, the protests were not only about the cartoons in the Danish newspapers. They were also about similar cartoons by individuals and the republishing of the cartoons in various countries where freedom of speech was argued to allow such insulting cartoons. Although the Danish newspaper did apologize (over 4 months after the publication), the rest refused to because they said they were practicing freedom of speech. However, we all know that the caricatures were way more than just for humor. They sent an offensive message about Islam and its 1.5 billion followers. In April 2003, a Danish cartoonist Christoffer Zieler offered cartoons of Jesus Christ to Jyllands-Postens, the newspaper which first published the caricatures. One of the editors of the paper rejected the drawings citing “I don’t think Jyllands-Posten's readers will enjoy the drawings. As a matter of fact, I think that they will provoke an outcry.” There was no concern about the drawings of Mohammed. Instead the editor-in-chief Carsten Juste said "We live in a democracy. Satire is accepted in this country and you can make caricatures. Religion shouldn't set any barriers on that sort of expression." The publications caused Muslims to act right away. They tried to have peaceful talks with the newspaper editors and the governors. The Danish Prime Minister refused to get involved and would not accept a meeting with eleven Arab Muslim ambassadors. This was not very surprising since Muslims in Denmark and other European countries are usually ignored and treated in this manner. About a month after the publications, an Egyptian newspaper reprinted some of the cartoons saying they were racist, insulting and predicted an outcry. As predicted, the outcry did occur from countries from the Far East to the Americas but a long time after it was predicted and after a lot of attempts of ‘peaceful dialogue’. Although Muslims in some countries did over-react, most protested peacefully. Some just simply boycotted all Danish products which had a great effect on the economy. Unfortunately, the reaction of some of the angry Muslims was very unacceptable but most Muslims didn’t not accept this and felt misrepresented by them. I see that this event was a sign for Muslims to start to speak out and represent their often misinterpreted and misrepresented religion. As much as I hate politics, as a Muslim in a western country, I feel like I almost have no choice but to be involved in it. I honestly don’t see why politics are discussed and reported in a school newsletter. Aren’t newsletters suppose to be about events and issues happening in or affecting school? Therefore, as long as the articles meet the editorial policy, submissions can be about anything and everything. We want to hear everyone’s thoughts on different issues, so keep writing! Classroom Authority By: Danielle Delano In response to the last issue’s article about who has control in the classrooms, numerous teachers and students have approached me and shared their stories of mishaps in the classroom. Clearly, this was an issue that needed to be addressed. For me, the classroom is supposed to be a place of safety and learning. But over the last few years, especially here at CPA, I have not felt the safety or authority in the classroom. So why are there so many out-of-control students in our classrooms. Why are disruptive and ill-behaved students not being held accountable for their actions? Why is our administration reluctant to take the disciplinary actions necessary to correct this problem? I have not found the answers to these questions and, as my time winds down at CPA, I don’t think I ever will know the answers. I do believe that the administration and the school board need to ‘do what they say’ rather than ‘say what they’ll do’ with respect to classroom discipline. So my final word on this issue is this: students and teachers, if you feel like there is a problem, address it! Call people out! Don’t jeopardize yourself or other students because of one or more bad eggs. Make and hold our administration accountable to the problem of disruptive students. By: Danielle Delano In the past two issues of the Cheetah Perspective there have been two articles about signing anonymous and being able to speak out and talk about issues that people what addressed. To this issue, all I can and will continue to say is: if you believe in something, don’t back down; if you have something to say, say it! No matter what the important issue is, be yourself, have the courage of your convictions, and speak up when you are being ignored, hurt or you have something important to say. For the graduates of C.P.A. who will be moving on at the end of June, here is something for you to think about: sometimes life will feel like it is moving too fast or too slow. Don’t change it. Take things as they come. Enjoy what you have while you have it. Enjoy the people that are in your life, the memories you share and the time you have spent together. Life after high school will move all to fast and you won’t always have someone by your side, guiding you, pushing you, and telling you where to go. The only person that will do that for you is you! Make sure you never compromise yourself for others because once you start, you will never be able to stop. Don’t be willing to trust others for, as my English teacher, Ms. Henderson, is fond of saying, “The only person you can depend on is yourself”. Love isn’t everything and neither is money. Sometimes you have to take risks and deal with the consequences. Take responsiblity for yourself and your actions, no one else’s. For the CPA students that still have a few years left, think about this: try everything once. You may not think something is for you but you won’t know for sure unless you try. Many students do not realize what C.P.A. has to offer. Look around you. If you can’t find anything, start something. Make something of your high school years. One of the things I have learned from my three years in high school is you find out a lot about yourself, both good and bad. Just try to learn from your mistakes and grow from the experiences. Issue 4 The Smoking Drug By: Danielle Delano In the last issue of the Cheetah Perspective, I wrote an article titled “Classroom Authority”. In this article, I mentioned disruptive students and the lack of respect that they show their fellow classmates, teachers, classroom and finally themselves. But this isn’t the only issue here. Drugs play a huge part in the high school environment and I’m not really sure why. The issue is that there is a large population of students who have tried a range of illegal drugs including weed, E, cocaine, hash, and crystal meth. There are also students who use illicit drugs on a regular basis. From the viewpoint of one who has never tried any type of drug, I find the number of students who use, buy, sell, and talk about drug usage at our school appalling. I often wonder how these students make it through high school and what happens to them afterwards? Why would students come to school high or use drugs while in school? What is the appeal? Why do they get away with it? Why does our society accept it? I believe that drug use is a big issue when you are talking about control and authority in the classroom. CPA’s administration must recognize that our school does have a drug problem. There are too many students using and/or dealing in illegal drugs and their activities are having a negative impact on CPA’s learning environment. Respect Our Readers Issue 4 Gay Pride Censorship? By Andrea Kenny There are few things so indicative of how far Canada has come in terms of human rights as Gay Pride Week. Gay Pride Week, which typically takes place all around the world during June, this year, in Halifax will be held in July. It is the celebration of the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion - a debacle between the New York police and the patrons of a gay bar called the Stonewall Inn. On June 27, 1969, the bar was raided for the second time in one week by the police. Raids on gay bars were frequent at this time. On this night, however, the patrons decided that they had had enough and fought back and set off New York's gay rights movement. This in itself is a wonderful thing to remember and honour - a pinnacle of a public insistence on basic human rights. However, there is one event included in Gay Pride Week that stirs up controversy; the Gay Pride Parade. Recently, I read in Halifax’s “The Daily News” that there was new debate between organizers of this year’s Halifax parade. The issue was whether to cut some of the imprudence displayed in the Parade that prevents it from being a family-oriented event. "Some organizers are worried censorship would offend members of the gay community who are trying to express themselves" (April 11, 2006, “The Daily News”). This is the point in the article that inspired me to write one of my own. I agree that, unfortunately, homophobia is still alive and well in many people. However, so is sexism. Does that mean that women continue to burn their bras and use radical means to get their point across? We had our heyday and we recognized its end; women were accepted into most roles they had a desire to fill. Does that mean that nobody is sexist anymore? It's still big news when a woman becomes a huge success. What does that tell you about the acceptance of the female into every situation? It doesn't exist, but at this point, the only thing that will help the cause is time. Eventually, when something feels intrinsic in our society that is not causing harm to anybody, society will stop resisting it. This is the same argument to be used for gay rights. A radical approach is usually necessary to set off a worldwide movement. A radical approach is required to get the attention of people who are in a position to change laws, to improve the quality of life of the oppressed (or suppressed) classes of the day. As hard as it is to admit, one can not change the minds of 100% of the world simply by educating them. People are biased beings by nature. We take what we are taught by our parents, role models, and peers and mix it into our personal prejudices. After education, people need time to think, assess, and consider what it is worth to them to change their beliefs. If you belong to the senior class which forms 13%-20% of Canada's population, you may not feel the need to change your beliefs at all since they've worked just fine for you for the past 65 years or so. In due course, people will accept almost anything. But they are less likely to accept it when all they see when looking at a Gay Pride Parade is a confirmation of all the stereotypes they already hold surrounding the gay community. The Gay Pride Parade is intended to be a way of showing society that homosexuality is here to stay and it can't be pushed around. Unfortunately, some of society only finds reassurance in their view of the gay community as a crowd of cross-dressing, disease carrying people who never seem to grow up. In reality, most of these people are contributing members of society with steady jobs, steady partners, children, houses, education, and benevolence.. This side is not displayed before the world, however, and in my opinion it has a negative impact on the image of the gay community. When we are no longer allowed to question an event because we will seem backward-thinking and tyrannical, then something is wrong. Cleaning up the Gay Pride Parade is a progressive idea that would turn it into a family-friendly event. It will allow multiple generations to lose their negative prejudices surrounding homosexuality before they even begin. There is a world of difference between censorship and calming a movement when it is becoming detrimental to its own cause. Respect Our Readers Issue 4 Tips on Public Speaking By Nazneen Rustom Public speaking is one of many tools we should learn in high school. We’ve all had to do a form of public speaking, whether it’s a class presentation or the classic ‘bald-men in suit’ presentation, but one thing is for sure, most of us feel intimated in this circumstance. Fortunately, my grade nine English teacher, Mr. Kevin Young, built my confidence and prepared me for much that I would face over my time in high school, and in the real world. Over my experiences, I have learned that there are many factors that contribute to public speaking, other than speech such as tone, emphasis, and even phrasing. The tips below can apply to public speaking, but also dayto-day speech. TIP ONE- “ Like, umm, like public speaking.” How many times do you hear someone say “like” in the middle of a sentence where it does not belong? How many times have you seen a presentation and counted the times someone said “like”? Maybe it’s the culture we live in, but it sure is not the excuse for the re-iteration. This may be a surprise to a few, but avoiding the use of the word “like” will automatically help your credibility. Yes, its true, when you’re nervous, little bad habits such as the repetition of this word are likely. The better you prepare, and understand what you are saying, the better your information will come to you, avoiding the word “like.” It just does not sound smart. TIP TWO- Nothing is worse than a loose, weak conclusion. “That’s it for my presentation,” is not good enough and does not nearly conclude the importance of the information you have provided your audience. If anything, end with the cliché quote, or say “Thank you,” but never ever say, “ I guess that’s it.” TIP THREE- One day I was taken off hand where I had to introduce myself to a group of teachers and principals, talking about what extra-curricular activities I participate in etc. The next day I was speaking to one of the teachers who was present the previous night, and for the first time, he brought to my attention that I said “ummm” more than enough times; it was noticeable. I took his comment way too seriously, and was honestly offended when he pointed this out. Today, I am grateful to him and have totally eliminated “umm” from my vocabulary. Unconsciously, many, many people say “umm,” so much so that it is noticeable! This can again be avoided through preparation. Even when you are taken off hand like I was, prepare enough to avoid them under pressure. TIP FOUR- Try to get yourself interested in a topic in which you are presenting. One of the worst possible situations--no one wants to listen to someone who is not bothered about what they are taking about. We all appreciate passionate speakers whether your passion is math, physics, or art. If you respect what you are saying, others who care will be inspired, and interested to listen. Even if your audience does not care, at least you know that you respect your contribution. TIP FIVE- Always relate your presentation to your audience. The way you present to your classmates is different than a way you present to a group of seniors! If the topic is abstract, think of real world areas in which you can apply this concept. No one wants to hear words that you do not understand. I once attended a presentation where the gentleman presenting could not pronounce the words in a presentation he supposedly composed. It was most likely a quick copy-paste project. That is wrong, but the fact that he could not even pronounce his words was a give away. They strike innocent teenagers every year around this time and cause a sudden inexplicable lack of motivation in school. Don’t worry, this happens to everyone, but the important thing is to not give up now! These last months will fly by, and before you know it all that hard work will have paid off. However, if you really feel overtired, maybe you should consider cutting down on some of your hours at work, at least until the summertime. Also, try completing assignments as soon as you get them, rather than putting them off. This will give you more valuable time for yourself to relax and daydream of the upcoming warm weather. Just remember, why give up now when you’re so close to finishing? Plus, if you’re in grade 11, these second semester marks will often be looked at by universities next year. Not to mention in grade 12 these marks are still going to influence scholarships and even acceptance! Teens are vulnerable to advertising that promotes a bronzed body as the desirable sexy, healthy look. As we approach prom and beach season, thousands of Nova Scotian teens will use tanning beds, subjecting themselves to cancer causing UV rays. Advertising leads people to believe that tanning beds are safer than the sun, when in fact tanning beds are classified as a known human carcinogen. Tanning beds emit ultraviolet (UV) levels 5 times the strength of the midday sun. In March 2005, the World Health Organization took steps to reduce skin cancer risk by releasing a recommendation stating that no person under the age of 18 should use a tanning bed. A tan is a result of exposure to UV radiation. A tan is a sign of injury to the skin, injury that can result in skin cancer. Exposure to UV radiation during childhood greatly increases the chance of developing skin cancer later in life. As recently reported in the 2005 Canadian Cancer Statistics, rates of melanoma – the most lethal form of skin cancer – are increasing by 2.5 per cent a year for men and 1.8 per cent a year for women. This year, it is estimated that 205 Nova Scotians will be diagnosed with melanoma and 30 are expected to die of it. If this trend continues our youth will be faced with an even greater risk of developing cancer later in life. However this need not be the case as it is estimated that 90% of all skin cancers could be prevented. Prevention is key. Youth are not the only ones at risk of developing skin cancer, and being aware of the risks of tanning beds is not the only precaution we can take. No tan is a safe tan. To reduce your risk, protect yourself and your children from the UV light of the sun. It takes just a few simple steps to decrease your exposure to harmful UV: cover your skin, wear a hat and sunglasses, and put on sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. It is possible to enjoy healthy outdoor activities while in the sun. Everyone has failed at one point in their life and many of us suffer small failures on a daily basis. The difference between failure and success is those who succeed never give up despite how many failures they’ve experienced. As Thomas Edison said, “If I find 10000 ways something won't work, I haven't failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is often a step forward.” Edison not only failed, he thrived from it, failing his whole life yet still striving towards his next invention. Edison said, “Many of life's failures are experienced by people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” In fact, Thomas Edison failed over 3000 times to develop the light bulb. But when he ultimately succeeded, it changed the world. What if Edison had given up after the 2999th attempt? Would we be still using candles? Where would we be had Columbus not failed on his attempt to find India? The course of North America might be very different. How many great works of literature would we be deprived of if the author gave up after his first rejection? JK Rowling, author of Harry Potter, found her initial attempts to publish met with failure, as did Colonel Saunders, who took nine years to develop his secret ingredients for Kentucky Fried Chicken. Abraham Lincoln suffered seven political defeats and two failed businesses before ultimately being elected president of the United States. Here in Nova Scotia, we are sitting on one of the greatest failures of all time, the Oak Island money pit. How much money and how many lives have been lost with the failure to solve this tantalizing mystery? The very failure to solve this century old mystery is part of what makes it so tantalizing. It is this quest, this inner drive to attempt something new and different that makes us uniquely human. Whether it is sports, relationships, school, or work, failure is a part of our everyday existence. Failure is everywhere: from our stumbling first steps, through our childhood years of trial and error, throughout adulthood. The teenage years alone are a minefield of failure, and how we cope and learn from this is what shapes us as adults. Failure provides the yardstick with which to measure success. Failure toughens, shapes, and binds people together. The reason why failure is so important is because it motivates us to succeed. Without failure, we may never have that fresh feeling of victory, especially if we have failed toward that achievement; it just makes the success taste better. Think of it as a football game; you must test the other team with different plays to see what works. Of course there will be miscommunication, anger and even regret. When you find what plays work however, you’re going to learn from the mistakes, and reach success. Psychologist and author Richard Farson’s said, “I think the whole concept of success and failure needs to be re-thought. Whoever makes the most mistakes, wins.” In fact, this became his motto, and he wrote a best selling book about it. So, what is failure and what is success? Is either absolute? How can one judge when failure turns into success, or is it a matter of perspective? While a stroke victim might deem walking a few feet a huge success, it would be a failure for the average person. And while that same average person might feel success at running a five kilometers without passing out, an athlete would consider that a failure. So the difference between success and failure rides in the subjective mind of an individual. Today success is demanded in our society and failure is condemned. But at what price? Have technological advances created such a hectic pace that we are unable to even appreciate our successes? Professional motivator, Richard Thieme notes: “These crazy times of accelerated change make it hard for anyone to feel like an unmitigated success. Many of the people I meet are not even sure any more what success looks like.” Failure is emotionally and physically hardening, and only from its precise punishment can we grow, to learn from it, to overcome our limitations and failures and step closer to the light of success. There is no knowledge so sweet as that which you've discovered on your own. Success is reached more often then not by those who are not afraid of failing, and even to the extent who, like Thomas Edison, actually crave failing. Failing gives us awareness that we use again and again until our goal is complete. Failing is not the enemy, the enemy lies in the individual. Failure makes us interesting. It gives us stories to tell our grandchildren. Giving up has the power to wrap brass chains around an ambition and tear it down to a dusty defeat. Success for something priceless, is rarely achieved on the first try, it takes many frustrating attempts to find the path of success, but when we finally reach it, we have failure to thank for making us stronger and wiser in this long lasting chess game we call life. Report The Facts. Respect Our Readers Issue 4 GameMastah’s TCG Review May/June By Andrew McWatch Welcome, CPAers, to my domain, the domain of the GameMastah. Sadly, this will be my last article, as I’m graduating this year. I decided to give you, the readers, a brief detail of my beginnings with Yu-Gi-Oh, and the tournaments that I enter in. I began duelling when the game first came out in 2001-2002. I first acquired a Starter Deck Kaiba because I was fascinated by the “Blue-Eyes White Dragon”, and yet the original version is very rare, and not seen very often. Perhaps it’s replaced by many alternative art versions. Afterwards, I learned of the tournaments in Halifax/ Dartmouth region. I decided to wait until I was trained enough. I entered my first tournament ( I remember it because there’s a “low ceiling”, and I banged my head on it, since I was quite tall), and did exceptionally well. Later on, I managed to build a well-built Deck, that focused on mostly a “Beatdown Control” (High Attack Points, all offensive). Then, I began watching Yu-Gi-Oh, and later on, I watched the “Yu-Gi-Oh Movie”. I couldn’t wait for the newest sets to emerge from the clouds, as set by set appeared. Later on, the tournament that I went to, named Odyssey 2000 (that started at 10:00am!!), began to overcharge their tournaments (from $1.15 to $10.15), since the extra was a tournament pack, which are impossible to find. I then transferred to another tournament in Dartmouth, the store “Third-Eye Blind Games & Collectibles”, and they charged $2.00, and most of their stuff was already taxed, so I began playing there. Fast forward to present day, and I’m more experienced that ever. I was once a “noob” (beginner), and now, I’m helping the newest duelists when they enter the tournament. During the tournaments, I learn of new set information, like the newest set to be released, “Enemy of Justice”, whereas the “Enemy” is the “Destiny Heroes”, and the “Justice” is the current “Elemental Heroes”. So there you have it. I’m more experienced, and a self-trained duelist. Hopefully, you can reflect on my future successes. Possibly in a few years time, after graduating from my college (which I was accepted in to), look up on my future animated successes that are currently in the works, “BattleZone”, and “Trinity Legends”. Now, to the reviews of the TV series. English GX: Jaden and Zane are beginning the “Graduation Duel”, in which Zane personally selected Jaden as a result of a “rematch” from their last duel (Episode 7). Jaden and Zane duel their best, and overall they really let loose. I mean, Jaden and Zane’s monsters (Cyber End Dragon and Elemental Hero Shining Flare Wingman) were overkilling each other with over 30,000 points of damage to each other in the final showdown. Both Zane and Jaden resulted in a draw, whereas Zane graduates, and heads off to the “Pro League Battles”, where he will face “Aster Phoenix”, and his “Elemental Hero” clones of Flame Wingman and Shining Flare. Japanese GX: The GX World Cup has begun. Jaden watches as Prince Oliver, a duelist who proclaims that he can defeat his opponents with an OTK (One Turn Kill) move. Sartorious (Saiou’s dubbed name) challenges him. Prince Oliver summons his “Satellite Cannon”, which then he empowers it with “Charge-Up!”, and “Limiter Removal” (although Satellite is destroyed), Sartorious uses the effect that’s similar to “Kuriboh” (Discard from hand, all damage from 1 attack is decreased to 0). Sartorious wins, by using the Ace of Swords, which allows him to use Prince’s own Satellite against him. That’s all for now, CPAers. Sorry Sagittarius, but you just seem so lethargic this month it’s hard to get anything across to you. Perhaps it’s all this extra school work, or maybe you just stayed up too late watching the Much Music VJ search (In case you missed it, Tim won). Whatever it is, you’ll have a hard time shaking off that ever-lingering feeling of pure drowsiness this month. Better stock up on that Redbull, and avoid operating heavy machinery. But alas you’ve fallen asleep before you’ve finished reading this…*sigh* Capricorn: Umm, ok Capricorn…here’s the thing…you’ve got to stop all this lying! Yeah I know, you have a perfectly good reason for it, but enough is enough! People are starting to catch on this month, and releasing that maybe your prom date isn’t actually Brad Pitt…or Angelina Jolie, depending on what interests you. Its time to come clean, and stop telling those little white lies! So admit to your teacher you didn’t do your homework, tell your boss the real reason why you were late, and tell your mom, yes, she does look fat in that dress! Ehhh…on second thought scratch that last one… Aquarius: Are you feeling alright Aquarius? Your eyes are all crossed…and your tongue is hanging out…in fact you look a little like that msn messenger emoticon called “smile with tongue out” Wait… don’t tell me! I’m the horoscope expert after all, so I sense much confusion for you this month! (Hence that disgruntled look on your face) Well whatever is troubling you, try not to let it worry you too much! Everything should be resolved sometime next month and your tongue should retreat back inside your mouth and your eyes should just naturally fall back into their uncrossed position…I hope… Pisces: Geez Pisces, why are you even reading this? You don’t need to find out you’re fortune, ‘cause you already know it baby! You’re having such good luck this month that I’m pretty sure you must have made-out with a Genie or something. Unless you’re into that sort of thing regularly…anyways you have all the looks, the charm, the personality, and the brains goin’ on this month, so ENJOY! Because frankly most people only DREAM of this kind of luck. Now, just tell me where that Genie you made-out with went so I can get in on some of this good luck!
