Today we honor students and their achievements. Plymouth State University is a vibrant university of approximately seven thousand students, focused on first-rate teaching informed by excellent research and creativity and marked by engagement with the community, region, and world. PSU faculty and staff are committed to providing innovative opportunities for active learning so that graduates are well prepared in their fields and ready for the global arena. Christopher Navin This year, Plymouth State students came from 48 states and 28 countries and were engaged here and around the globe through coursework, research, and service, led by faculty and staff members who excel. Over the past weeks, many PSU students have been recognized for academic excellence and leadership, and we have seen their accomplishments in outstanding projects, presentations, and performances. The connections between students and their faculty mentors will continue for decades. Last year, over 800 students participated in a capstone experience such as an internship or project that helped them move from the undergraduate to the professional world; these are pathways of career development. The National Study of Student Engagement reports that PSU students have professional experiences at a higher rate than their peers, leading to stronger résumés and positions. Last year, too, the Chronicle of Higher Education named PSU one of the best places in the country to teach, based on educational innovation and commitment to student success. That innovation and commitment are at the heart of a PSU education. We see it with undergraduates and also with graduate students, whose excellent research already is changing the world. In my mind, what the University does also will be measured by what these graduates will accomplish later “out in the world”: doing good work; taking risks; being engaged with the community, region, and world; being innovative; and working collaboratively with others to solve problems. PSU’s motto, Ut prosim (That I may serve), is to be lived. PSU’s recent Plymouth Magazine features just a few of the young alumni who are rising in their fields and being recognized for excellence. And as today’s newest alumni apply their knowledge to make a difference, the ripple effect will be enormous. Today, with family and friends in attendance, we recognize each new graduate and at the same time we confirm the core of our educational mission: their lives and continued success. Reno Hugh Miller Herr In his nearly 40 years working in higher education in the United States and abroad as a senior administrator, professor, and consultant, Stephen Reno has demonstrated his commitment to service that is reflected in Plymouth State University’s motto, Ut prosim (That I may serve). In 2009 Reno completed a nine-year term as chancellor of the University System of New Hampshire. He has served as president of Southern Oregon University, and held senior administrative posts at the University of Southern Maine and the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, where he co-founded the Department of Religion. In addition to scholarship in his academic field of comparative religion, Reno’s presentations and publications have focused on institutional efficiency and effectiveness, governance, and strategic partnerships. These interests have led to his serving as consultant and as chair of accreditation teams to numerous public and private colleges and universities. He serves on the Governor’s Task Force on Education and the Workforce and as executive director of Leadership New Hampshire. In February of this year the New Hampshire Supreme Court appointed him as a lay member of the Judicial Council. He is a senior associate and vice president at Penson Associates, a top research and consulting firm for higher education clients. In 2010 he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the New Hampshire Business and Industry Association. Reno earned both doctorate and master’s degrees in religious studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from St. John’s College, California. A leading visionary in the research and development of biomechatronics—technology that combines human physiology with electromechanics—Hugh Herr is the director and principal investigator of the Biomechatronics research group at the MIT Media Laboratory. There he pioneers a new class of biohybrid smart prostheses and exoskeletons—bionic limbs—to improve the quality of life for people with physical challenges. After losing both legs in a climbing accident in the White Mountains 30 years ago, Herr spent the following decades designing and re-designing prototypes of a prosthetic device that would mimic the action of biological limbs, ultimately working with his team to invent the world’s first bionic foot and calf system: the BiOM. In his March 2014 TED Talk, in which a dancer performed on stage for the first time since losing one of her legs in the Boston Marathon terror attack, wearing a new bionic leg designed by Herr's team at the MIT Media Lab, Herr said, “Bionics is not only about making people stronger and faster. Our expression, our humanity, can be embedded into electromechanics.” Herr holds a joint appointment at MIT’s Program in Media Arts and Sciences and the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. He is also the founder and chief technology officer of BiOM, Inc., which markets the BiOM bionic prosthetic device. He is the author or co-author of over 80 peer-reviewed manuscripts and patents, chronicling the science and technology behind his many innovations. Herr received his BA in physics from Millersville University of Pennsylvania, an MS in mechanical engineering from MIT, and a PhD in biophysics from Harvard University. Chris Crisman Granite State Award 4 Honorary Doctor of Laws and Commencement Address Stephen J. Sedensky III State’s Attorney Stephen J. Sedensky III ’80, Judicial District of Danbury, Connecticut, is a prosecutor with over 25 years experience prosecuting child abuse cases, as well as training law enforcement, social, and legal professionals in child interviewing and child abuse investigation skills. Among colleagues and in the media he has a reputation for conscientiousness, high ethical standards, and careful, thorough preparation in all he does. Sedensky is the Chief State’s Attorney’s designee to Connecticut’s Governor’s Task Force on Justice for Abused Children, co-chair of the Task Force’s executive committee, chair of the Finding Words/ChildFirst subcommittee, and an active member of the area’s child abuse multidisciplinary team. He is nationally board certified in Criminal Trial Advocacy. In 2009 Sedensky received the Outstanding Service Award in the prosecution category given yearly by the National Children’s Advocacy Center. As the state’s attorney, Sedensky was responsible for overseeing the police investigation of the Newtown, Connecticut, tragedy. While attending Plymouth State, Sedensky majored in business administration with an accounting concentration and played football under Charles Currier. He chaired the Student Judiciary Committee under advisor Dean Richard Hage, was treasurer for the student government, and was voted Outstanding Senior Senator. Sedensky earned his Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School in Boston. Message from the PSU Alumni Association Amy Begg '97 Chair, Plymouth State University Alumni Association Today marks the beginning of your life as a member of the 31,000-strong Plymouth State University Alumni Association. You are now part of an exceptional group of individuals who are making a difference in education, business, industry, science, health care, public service, and many other fields. The adage, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” is based on the notion of community. Your community of classmates, friends, family, and professors helped you as you wrestled with core concepts in your course of study. Who makes up your community after graduation? All of those same people, plus the PSU Alumni Association, which offers meaningful ways to stay connected with your friends, professors, and other alumni. I encourage you to make the most of your Plymouth State experience by getting involved with the Alumni Association. Alumni live the Plymouth State motto, Ut prosim (That I may serve), by helping each other with careers and connections, and they give back to students through internships, as mentors, and with their philanthropic support. When we, as alumni, take an active role with our alma mater, we ensure that Plymouth State’s excellent academic and co-curricular programs continue to be accessible for all. Congratulations, 2014 graduates! 5 Distinguished Teaching Award Professor of Criminal Justice Mark J. Fischler Mark Fischler joined the Department of Criminal Justice in 2003, and currently serves as chair. Prior to joining the Plymouth State faculty, he practiced law, representing poor criminal defendants for the New Hampshire Public Defender’s Office. Fischler has worked extensively with alternative theoretical models in law, constitutional law, and higher education, and has published on integral applications to teaching, being a lawyer, and legal theory. His focus in the classroom is ethics and criminal procedure, and he is well respected for a teaching philosophy that emphasizes recognizing the humanity and dignity of each student. Fischler has served as a Guardian Ad Litem and acts as advisor for Alpha Phi Sigma, the national criminal justice honor society. Distinguished Teaching Lecturer Award Art Faculty Kathi J. Smith Since joining the Department of Art in 2008, Kathi Smith has earned a reputation for being a supportive, devoted instructor who sets the bar high for her students in order to prepare them for a career in fine arts. Her courses include painting, drawing, watermedia, and two-dimensional professional presentation practices. Encouraging cross-curricular connections and the integration of experiences outside the classroom, Smith and her students can often be found in Boyd Hall drawing specimens in the biology labs, in the Silver Center for the Arts making large-scale perspective drawings, or in the Karl Drerup Art Gallery writing and reflecting on the current exhibition. Smith’s reputation and career are rapidly growing. She shows her own work regionally and nationally, and has participated in five artist residencies in the past four years. Distinguished Graduate Teaching Award Education Graduate Faculty Pamela L. Clark ’85G Pamela Clark has worked in education in New Hampshire for more than 30 years, first as a teacher and principal and currently as a consultant in leadership, adult development, and organizational change. A member of the Plymouth State community since 2003, Clark’s passion and life work is facilitating individual and organizational growth and transformation. Students and colleagues alike speak highly of Clark’s skill in the classroom, where she uses a variety of teaching methods demonstrating innovation, and she constantly looks for creative ways to engage students in courses such as Transformational Inquiry and Research, Transpersonal Psychology, Evolutionary Change for a Sustainable Future, and Vision, Synergy and Synthesis. 6 The Symbols of Learning The Academic Procession is a descendent of European religious processions, which began to include teaching faculties in the Middle Ages, when universities were closely associated with the medieval church. The order used in today’s procession has evolved through many years of practice at Plymouth State University. At the front of the line is the marshal, 2014 Distinguished Teaching Award recipient Mark Fischler, who will carry the University mace, a symbol of authority and unity. The marshal will be followed in the procession by two flag bearers, the president of Plymouth State University, members of the University System Board of Trustees, the provost and vice president for academic affairs, honored guests, speakers, vice presidents, and senior class officers. This group is followed by the faculty, who march in order of rank. The faculty is followed by the degree candidates. Academic Regalia—The caps, gowns, and hoods seen today have evolved from costumes worn during early religious processions to distinguish church and university members from the laity. In present times, the attire serves to indicate, by style and adornment, the chief academic degree attained, the major field of study, and the college or university attended by the wearer. The Gown—The modern academic costume worn in the United States is based on an intercollegiate code established in 1895. Most gowns are black, but more American colleges and universities now permit the wearing of college colors. The associate’s gown and the bachelor’s gown are the same. They have long, pointed sleeves, and are untrimmed and worn closed. The master’s gown, worn either open or closed, has long, crescent-shaped sleeves. The doctoral gown has black velvet panels down the front, and velvet bars on bellshaped sleeves. The Cap—The customary head covering is either the mortarboard or the Oxford cap. The tassel on the mortarboard cap may be black or of a color indicating the degree. The doctor’s tassel is usually gold in color. The tassel is worn over the left front quarter of the mortarboard once the degree has been awarded. The Hood—The hood, which drapes over the back of the gown, carries the greatest symbolism of all the components of the academic costume, and dates back to the twelfth century when it was intended as a head cover or shoulder cape. Its length and width denote the wearer’s highest academic achievement. The color of the velvet trim reveals the wearer’s major field of study. Linings, which are exposed in the center of the hood as it lies over the back of the gown, indicate the colors of the degree-granting institution. The Mace—The tradition of the academic mace began in the late fourteenth century when two ancient instruments, the royal scepter and the battle mace, were combined to form a symbol of authority of the rector of a university. Today, the academic mace, along with the presidential medallion, signifies that the president of the university is the temporary embodiment of the power, authority, and autonomy vested in the institution. The faculty marshal carries the academic mace at public events such as commencement exercises and convocations as a symbol of the special stewardship authority and trust reposed in the faculty for the curriculum and academic affairs of the university. The PSU mace was designed and created by Professor of Sculpture Philip Lonergan in 2004. The Presidential Medallion—The Presidential Medallion is the official insignia of the President’s Office and is worn on ceremonial occasions. Created when Plymouth State became a university, the medallion embodies parts of the official seal of the University, showing pictorial representations of Rounds Hall, the Old Man of the Mountain, the lamp of enlightenment, and our connection to the outdoors. The Cord and Sash—Cords, medallions, or colored tassels may be worn by some members of academic honor societies to signify their achievements. The standards for this distinction are set by each honor society. The cords are worn around the neck and drape down the front of the gown. Special intertwined green and white cords may be worn by 20 graduates today. This indicates that they were selected as the class of 2014 top 20 seniors by a committee comprising faculty and staff from a variety of academic disciplines, based on leadership on campus, community involvement, and quality of character. Members of several student organizations may also wear honor cords in recognition of their service to the Plymouth State and greater Plymouth communities. Plymouth State’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students who have participated in Lavender Graduation, a ceremony honoring LGBT students and acknowledging their achievements and contributions to the University, may wear a rainbow cord. Several of PSU’s international students have chosen to wear sashes displaying the colors and symbols of their home countries. This year PSU is graduating students from Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Peru, Romania, Saudi Arabia, and Sweden. In addition, graduating students who have studied away during their time at PSU, whether it was a semester abroad, a domestic exchange, or a facultyled course trip, will have the opportunity to wear a navy, green, and gold intertwined cord. The Colors—In regalia, academic disciplines are noted by color. These colors can be found on undergraduate and master's tassels and on master's and doctoral hoods on the velvet edging. They have been adopted by many universities and colleges to enhance the ceremonial nature of the commencement exercises. Plymouth State has created its own gonfalons with the University colors of dark green and white on the outer panels and the inner panel of each representing one or more academic fields of study.
