Commencement Exercises M a y 2 1 , 2016 The Board of Trustees, President and Faculty Welcome Graduates, Family and Friends to Vaughn College’s Commencement Exercises May 21, 2016 The Flag Vaughn College has flag colors of burgundy with white lettering. Academic Heraldry The wearing of caps, gowns and hoods at college and university functions dates to the Middle Ages, when they were first worn by monks and students for warmth in the damp and drafty 12th-century castles and halls of learning. Through the years, their style and color have come to represent specific meanings. Gowns for the bachelor’s degree have a semi-stiff yoke, long pleated front, and intricate shirring across the shoulders and back. The bachelor’s gown is worn closed and is primarily distinguished by its long pointed sleeves. The gown for the master’s degree has the same yoke effect as that of the bachelor’s but is designed so that it may be worn open or closed. The back of the sleeve is oblong and cut square with the front part carrying a cutaway arc. Gowns for the doctoral degree are also worn open or closed. They have long velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the bell-shaped sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinctive of the field of learning to which the degree pertains. Certain changes were made in 1960, and some colleges and universities have departed from the traditional black and adopted gowns in the primary colors of the institutions. Caps can be of serge, broadcloth, cotton, rayon or silk, and for the doctoral cap only, of velvet. The tassel of the doctoral cap can be of gold thread. The caps normally are mortarboards in shape, although women can wear soft, square-topped caps. The hood gives color and definitive meaning to the academic costume. The hood is of varying sizes for master’s and doctoral degrees and is made of material to match the gown. It is lined with the color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. The hood is bordered with velvet of the proper width and color to indicate the field of learning. Students’ Attire Traditionally, student robes are black. The inside of the hood is burgundy and white in color. The velvet border on the hood of undergraduates is golden yellow, symbolic of the technology degree. The velvet border on the hood of graduate candidates is drab, symbolic of the business, management or commerce degree. Student Government Association Pins The pins worn by the graduates are a gift from the Student Government Association and presented to graduates of Vaughn College. The College seal is incorporated into the pins. Pewter pins are for associate degree graduates, gold pins are for bachelor’s degree graduates and bronze pins are for master’s degree graduates. Color Cords Graduates who have completed their degrees with academic honors are attired with cords: Bronze cords are summa cum laude; silver cords are magna cum laude; and gold cords are cum laude. Students who have completed the Leadership Academy program are recognized with burgundy and white cords. Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree Recipient The Honorable Michael P. Huerta Michael P. Huerta is the current administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He started his journey as commissioner of New York City’s Department of Ports International Trade and Commerce from 1986 to 1989. After that, he served as the executive director of the Port of San Francisco from 1989 to 1993 and from 1993 to 1998, he held senior positions in the US Transportation Department in Washington, DC, serving under Secretary Federico Pena and Secretary Rodney E.Slater. In 2010, Huerta was confirmed as the FAA’s Deputy Administrator by the US Senate. On January 7, 2013 he joined the office as the FAA Administrator for a five-year term. Huerta is responsible for the safety and the efficiency of the largest aerospace system in the world. He oversees a $15.9 billion-dollar budget and more than 47,000 employees. He came to the FAA after a long career in transportation, including serving as a managing director of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. He also oversees the FAA’s multi-billion dollar NextGen air traffic control modernization program. Huerta holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California-Riverside and a master’s degree in public affairs, with a concentration in international relations from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. Honorary Degree Recipient Kenneth E. Senior Kenneth E. Senior was an entrepreneur in the aerospace manufacturing industry and the founder of Alken Industries. Born April 27, 1943 in Floral Park, NY, he was the son of Edwin and Dorothy Senior. Senior attended City College to study engineering. At the age of 24, he worked on the US Government’s Lunar Landing Module program that resulted in the landing of a man on the moon in 1969. His methods, vision and passion led him to start his own aerospace manufacturing company, Alken Industries, in 1967 at the age of 25. Senior’s leadership and management skills brought Alken national recognition. His consistent commitment to quality allowed his company to flourish into an internationally recognized precision aerospace manufacturer and defense contractor. In recognition of his contribution to the Defense industry, he attended the inaugural ball in Washington DC in 1985 and shook the hand of President Ronald Reagan. As an employer, Senior touched the lives and hearts of many. He provided opportunity and education, and inspired people to exceed their personal expectations and realize their full potential. The change does not imply that a student has failed, nor does it commit Vaughn to grant a diploma to a person thus listed in error. In addition, final determination of academic honor status lies with the Registrar. Vaughn College would like to congratulate all graduates and wish them the best in their future endeavors.
