San Leolino Farm
T
I have just found an internet address called “Fattoria San Leolino” (San Leolino Farm). I opened it and found with
great surprise and joy that it is about the Guadagni fief, now farm, of San Leolino, still owned by our cousins
Dufour Berte, who inherited it in 1876, when Ottavia Guadagni, married Dufour Berte, last descendant of the elder
branch of the Guadagni of Santo Spirito, passed away. As you remember the Dufour Berte inherited the fief, our
branch of the Guadagni inherited the title of “marchese of San Leolino”. I will copy here a few pages of it, which
also talk briefly about our family history. It is all in English, you can read more on it in internet if you wish. The
Dufour Berte still consider themselves our cousins, they live in the Santo Spirito Guadagni Palace, which they also
inherited in 1876, where I met them as few years ago, and are always pleased to meet us. They are also marchesi
(Dufour Berte) and have their own family crest which you can see in internet.

Fattoria San Leolino Today


The Marquise Maria Luisa Dufour Berte, granddaughter of Casimiro, is the present owner
of Fattoria San Leolino, an estate which has been in her family continuosly for over 350 years.
The Marquise is referred to by the family as Zia Misa (Aunt Misa) and at the age of ninety she still
manages with great passion and enthusiasm the oil mill where the extra-virgin olive oil is produced.
Throughout the decades she has made all of the important decisions to maintain the farmland
and the farmhouses, preserving many of the traditional methods of farming and production,
while having always an open eye to the future. Fattoria San Leolino today is an operating estate
with 500 acres of land of which 70 acres of olive groves, 4 acres of vineyards and the majority
of the rest composed of forests.
Family History
Story of Pure passion
The estate takes its name from the famous Medieval castle of San Leolino, which ruin stands
in the middle of the property, overlooking the surrounding valleys. It is located in Tuscany,
at the Northern border of the Chianti region and it dates back to 1645. It was originally part
of a much bigger property, belonging to the very old and wealthy Florentine family named
Guadagni, from which the Dufour Bertes, current owners of the Fattoria, descend.
The first Dufour Berte at Fattoria San Leolino was Marquis Casimiro, who inherited the estate
in the 1800s as the minimumamount of property due to him by law. He was in fact being punished
by his parents for marrying the daughter of the servant, instead of a woman from another noble family.
Casimiro was a very passionate man and was more interested in the choices of the heart than
in wealth and position. It was this same passion that Casimiro invested in the Fattoria, making many
improvements over the years to the entire estate.

Fattoria San Leolino today is an operating estate with 500 acres of land of which 70 acres of olive
groves,
4 acres of vineyards and the majority of the rest composed of forests. It is managed by a family team
where
the unique experience of Zia Misa is complemented by the competence of her grandnephews,
Tommaso and Nicola Venturi, who are “victims” of her contagious enthusiasm for agriculture.
Besides producing olive oil and grapes for wine, Fattoria San Leolino is also an agritourism visited each
year
by guests who always bring home a bottle of extra virgin olive oil as an exquisite essence of their stay.
