ENVIRONMENTS
Environmental aspects, such as
indoor air quality, adequate interior
design and noise level affect
patients and influence medical
staff behavior.
Improving these elements has
significant benefits and helps the
healing process.
context
Indoor air is 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air, contributing to
the development of asthma and allergies. Nurses and housekeeping staff
are particularly affected by occupational asthma that is mostly present
in medical settings due to the use of harmful chemicals contained in
cleaning and disinfection products.
Solutions
& No harmful components that have a direct effect on people’s health
& T he lowest VOC emissions from 10 to 100 below the levels required
by ISO 16000 standard (<1000 µg/m3)

Noise can be an extremely negative environmental factor in hospitals: it
increases patient pain perception and consequent use of medication,
can cause sleep deprivation and patient confusion, and may increase the
potential length of a hospital stay. Noise (from tile surfaces, metal equipment,
alarms, beepers, overhead paging, etc.), is one of the most common
causes of complaints from inpatients and is also frequently cited by staff
as a cause of increased stress.
Solutions
To reduce noise, and in accordance with building constraints, Tarkett
offers a range of flooring solutions that:
& Reduce sound transmission from rooms above particularly important
for patient bedrooms (must be generally below 60 dB)
& Limit the noise made by footsteps, rolling medical beds and trolleys,
especially in corridors servings bedrooms
& Facilitate heavy bed and trolley movement with low rolling resistance,
improving medical staff comfort

The practical applications of colour, pattern, texture and light reflection are
particularly important to creating interiors that have a positive influence on
people. They help reduce stress and can better identify, unify or separate
spaces. It’s even more important in an aged care unit, where interior design
is key to improving Alzheimer patient comfort and safety. Also essential is
the perception of a cleaner appearance thanks to stains and marks that
are less visible, as well as easier orientation throughout the building.

Durability
& resistance
context
INVESTING IN DURABLE
& SUSTAINABLE
buildings
A hospital runs permanently. Some
areas support heavy traffic; others
like bedrooms or operating theatres
are difficult to renovate.
Minimising maintenance costs,
environmental impact and renovation
operations are key challenges
for hospitals.
HYGIENE, EASY CLEANING
& Low-Cost Maintenance
context
Hospitals run 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Therefore it is important to
select durable material that will resist heavy traffic and rolling loads, and
doesn’t require heavy maintenance procedures or replacements that
block an area, a real headache in occupied buildings. In heavy traffic
areas, select flooring with high welding resistance whose seams stay
intact during several years. In medical areas, flooring must be particularly
resistant to stains and chemicals, as well as heavy medical equipment.
Solutions
Sustainability
Commitment
context
In the continuing effort to cut costs without impacting on patient care,
hospitals are faced with a delicate balancing act that involves close
scrutiny of all spending. A review of maintenance costs is one area that
can offer enormous potential savings. In particular, the choice of the right
flooring and wall protection offers significant savings in terms of energy,
water and maintenance chemical consumption, as well as labour costs.
Solutions
Sustainable building design is key to durable constructions that have
minimal environmental impact, without compromising on quality of life.
All building materials, including flooring, must meet specific norms to
earn certification from one of the existing eco-building systems around
the world (LEED (US), BREEAM (UK), HQE (France), etc.).
Solutions
To minimise daily attacks and stresses, especially to abrasion, scratches
and stains, and to facilitate maintenance procedures, Tarkett proposes:
Tarkett strives to minimize your maintenance costs and make daily
cleaning easier:
Tarkett is a leader in environmentally responsible manufacturing and
sustainable product development with our 4 key pillars:

Level (NF S 90-351)
According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control,
6 % of acute hospital patients will acquire at least one health careassociated infection (approximatively 3 million people). Infection control
is a major challenge for all health care facilities. Even if the environment
is not a primary source of contamination, it is important to make it easy
to clean and decontaminate in high risk infection areas. According to the
World Health Organisation (WHO) 90 % of micro-organisms are present
in visible dirt. Therefore, efficient cleaning is a high priority, especially in
the sensitive areas.
In addition, controlled environments - recommended in areas where the
risk of infection is high - must keep airborne particle contamination to
required levels. The construction and use of cleanrooms is designed to
minimise the introduction, production and retention of particles inside
the room. According to the ISO14644-1 “classification of air cleanliness”, rooms are classified with an ISO rating from 1 (the best one) to 9.
This classification defines particle concentration limits (particles/m3 of
air per size).

For these sensitive rooms, Tarkett proposes 2 solutions depending on the need to
evacuate electrostatic discharge or not:
2
• without electrostatic discharge evacuation:
iQ FLOORING + PROTECTWALL 2CR
• with electrostatic discharge evacuation:
iQ TORO SC + PROTECTWALL 2CR

5
Wall protection
• ProtectWALL 2CR: no damage observed following
impact test EN 259-1 & ASTM D4226
To ensure efficicent cleaning and a high hygienic standard in areas where
there is a risk of infection, flooring and walls must be:
& Sealed, smooth, with an impervious surface and minimal joints
COVE FORMER
5
& Perfectly watertight with firmly welded joints that will not break or split
VINYL FLOOR COVERING
7
& Meticulously installed to prevent dirt from collecting
& Compatible with cleaning chemicals and frequent disinfection

context
Selecting safe &
efficient functional
solutions
Finding your way around an hospital
can be difficult. Flooring plays an
important role in providing visual
and tactile guidance cues for visually
impaired people. It also helps to
prevent slips, so that people move
safely around a building.
For specific applications, it evacuates
electrostatic discharge, securing
medical practice.
Slip resistance
context
Electrostatic discharges not only cause discomfort, but may also damage
sensitive technical equipment and ignite flammable gases. Static conductive
flooring is often recommended in operating theatres to ensure the safety
of sensitive surgeries such as neonatalogy, cardiology or neurology.
context
An international directive requires that hospital buildings, as public
buildings, must be accessible to impaired people (ISO 21542 standard
for building conception). Visually impaired people in particular need help
to avoid accidents and find their way.
Solutions
Solutions
Dissipative or conductive flooring solutions evacuate electrostatic
discharge:
& E N/IEC 61340-4-1 defines the electrical resistance: measurement of
the capacity of the flooring material to conduct electrical charges to
a ground point. The higher the resistance, the lower the conductivity
& iQ Toro SC is a conductive flooring, iQ Granit SD is a dissipative
flooring. Both benefit from the unique and patented conductive iQ PUR,
and a carbon backing

Solutions
Flooring and accessories help to improve accessibility and guidance:
A floor’s degree of slip-resistance must be selected depending on:
& Colour contrasts that respect a minimum 30 points LRV difference
improve visual cues; an LRV difference of 60 points or more is
recommended for danger signs and written information or logos
& Whether people are wearing shoes or not, and then the respective
standards (barefoot or wearfoot standard)
& Tactile guide strips indicate adapted routes to selected strategic
destinations
& Our Multisafe and Safetred ranges are dedicated to people safety:
they have exceptional and durable slip-resistance properties
(R10 and R11 options)
& Tactile warning tiles indicate caution before lifts and stairs
& Type of liquid spillage: water and/or viscous material (oil, grease...)
& Signage, through our Floorcraft service, assists orientation

THROUGH OUR SERVICES
From design and total life-cycle cost to installation, Tarkett offers a wide range of services to help you maximise your
investment and make the most of your project.
Floorcraft Design Service
Bring your decoration ideas and inspiration to life by taking advantage of our comprehensive experience and exclusive service.
Whether you have prepared drawings, want to create a unique design or choose from specific design elements, our team is
ready to help.
Life-Cycle Cost Program
A floor covering’s profitability cannot be calculated using only its purchase price. All costs related to its maintenance must also
be considered. So Tarkett developed a program that can determine a flooring’s overall cost. It has notably demonstrated that,
over 20 years, cleaning and maintenance represent on average 92% of a flooring’s life cycle cost. To reduce maintenance costs
and environmental impact, Tarkett has therefore developed solutions such as the PUR treatment.
Tarkett Observer
TEC Training
We offer installation training complete with a certificate that validates your skill regarding this specific watertight installation.
RESTART
Tarkett also offers a collection service for post-installation waste, which is then treated in our recycling plants and reintegrated
into new floor coverings. You reduce your waste on site, and we improve our use of materials and resources.
If you need further information, please contact your Tarkett sales representative.

Tarkett produces trend workbooks that analyse aspects of different indoor environments. Our Health Observer publishes
studies that show how colour and light impact moods and behaviour. A hospital can provide an atmosphere that is safe,
resistant to abrasion, heavy loads, electrostatic charges and the risk of infection, and that is also easy to clean and requires
minimal maintenance. Our recommendations accompany patients and hospital staff around the clock.
