INDOOR AIR QUALITY
CONTEXT
CREATING HEALTHY
& LEARNING
ENVIRONMENTS
Environmental aspects, such as
noise level, adequate light or good
indoor air quality can have positive
effects on students and teachers.
Improving these elements has
significant benefits.
CONTEXT
Indoor air is 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air, contributing to
the development of asthma and allergies, especially due to volatile organic
compounds (VOCs). According to the World Health Organization, the
number of cases of asthma has doubled in Western Europe in the past
ten years*. Children are also more sensitive to indoor pollution when
practicing sport.
SOLUTIONS
& No harmful components that have a direct effect on people’s health
& The lowest VOC emissions from 10 to 100 below the levels required
by ISO 16000 standard (<1000 µg/m3)
& No toxic pollutants – strippers, wax or polish – required for
maintenance

< 10 Classrooms can be noisy: a 30-student classroom generates an ambient
noise level of 50 dB, requiring the teacher to speak at 65 dB to be fully
understood*. Noise comes from the students themselves, but also from
impacts to the floor – from classrooms overhead. It is therefore
essential to minimize classroom noise using flooring solutions that
favour learning.
& Combine a large choice of materials and designs, using appropriate
colours and contrast
SOLUTIONS
To reduce noise, and in accordance with building constraints, Tarkett
offers a range of flooring solutions that:
& Customise & show your identity with our Floorcraft service
& Reduce sound transmission from rooms above particularly important
for classrooms (must be generally below 60 dB)
& Increase the impression of light in a room with the appropriate
flooring LRV
& Limit the noise made by footsteps and moving furniture in common
areas such as hallways or cafeteria

Colour and light influence children’s moods and students’ behaviours.
Whereas vivid colours excite, light colours will assist learning, and natural
light favours the production of the cortisol hormone associated with
concentration. An appropriate light reflection value (LRV) for walls and
floors contributes to generating a comfortable level of light.

DURABILITY
& RESISTANCE
Flooring withstands significant
wear and tear in a heavy-traffic
building like a school (Class 34).
The initial choice therefore needs
to be made with its future life and
associated costs in mind.
CONTEXT
Stomping feet, scuffing and scratching from dirt and shoes, scraping and
indentations from furniture in classrooms and the canteen: in education's busy environments, flooring really has to stand up to rough and unforgiving treatment.
CONTEXT
80 % of dirt comes from outside, and 90 % of micro-organisms are found
in visible dirt*. For good hygiene, it’s important to easily clean dirt and
floor soiling. Not only that, but flooring maintenance represents 50-70 %
of a building’s total maintenance budget whereas wall painting must be
refreshed every 2 to 3 years. Facility managers require a solution for
both that reduces their long-term costs.
Sustainable building design is key to durable constructions that have
minimal environmental impact, without compromising on quality of life.
All building materials, including flooring, must meet specific norms to
earn certification from one of the existing eco-building systems around
the world (LEED (US), BREEAM (UK), HQE (France), etc.).

SOLUTIONS
SOLUTIONS
Minimize daily attacks and stresses, especially to abrasion and
indentation, by using Tarkett’s highly resistant flooring:
& i QTM: Homogeneous vinyl. Unique restoration properties:
only with dry-buffing. No strip, no polish or wax ever needed
& T opClean XPTM: Reinforced PU coating for heterogeneous vinyl
to improve scratch and abrasion resistance
& x f²TM: Linoleum with an extremely strong and tough surface.
Highly resistant to abrasion and stains
LINOLEUM xf² TM ABRASION TEST
& K eep to a minimum the levels of dirt and moisture that are carried
into the building with 3-step entrance mats
& Choose
low-maintenance products that require no stripping, no wax
or polish, and covings that make cleaning easier in sensitive areas
& S pace out painting renovation using protection that resists scratches
and is easily washed and cleaned
iQ: THE UNIQUE CHEMICAL-FREE RESTORATION FOR RESILIENT FLOOR
We ran a benchmark test to compare Linoleum xf²TM to competitors’ PU-coated coverings. All
samples were subjected to dry abrasion using a rotation tumbler machine equipped with a
black pad. After a 30 minutes test, competitors’top treatments have been damaged.
Before abrasion

SLIP RESISTANCE
CONTEXT
EMPHASISING
SAFE & EFFECTIVE
SOLUTIONS
Flooring plays an important role
in providing visual and tactile
guidance cues and in preventing
slips, so that people move safely
around a building. In sports halls,
numerous requirements ensure
effective and safe surfaces
for athletes.
SPORTS FLOORING
CONTEXT
An international directive requires that education buildings, as public
buildings, must be accessible to impaired people (ISO 21542 standard
for building conception). Visually impaired people in particular need help
to avoid accidents and find their way.
CONTEXT
Slipping can cause serious injuries, tallying up an annual cost of € 900
million in Europe*. People are most exposed to falls in wet areas, and
their risk of slipping also depends on whether they are wearing shoes
or not.

REQUIREMENTS
There are standard requirements for sports flooring, as outlined in
EN 14904, to provide a safe and effective surface. Various criteria impact
the choice for the appropriate solution: shock absorbency must be adapted to practisers’ profile, while a sports hall used as an exam hall or for
parties requires higher scratch and indentation protection.
SOLUTIONS
SOLUTIONS
Flooring and accessories help to improve accessibility and guidance:
A floor’s degree of slip-resistance must be selected depending on:

improve visual cues
&W
hether people are wearing shoes or not, and then the respective
standards (barefoot or wearfoot standard)
& T actile guide strips indicate adapted routes to selected strategic
destinations
& T ype of liquid spillage: water and/or viscous material (oil, grease...)
Tarkett offers a wide range of sports floorings, with wood, vinyl or
linoleum surfaces to choose:

Practicing indoor sports sensitises children to indoor air
pollution and contributes to the development of allergies.
On the other hand, multisport and multi-use sports halls
have not the same constraints.

GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR PROJECT
THROUGH OUR SERVICES
From design and total life-cycle cost to installation, Tarkett offers a wide range of services to help you maximise your
investment and make the most of your project.
FLOORCRAFT DESIGN SERVICE
Bring your decoration ideas and inspiration to life by taking advantage of our comprehensive experience and exclusive service.
Whether you have prepared drawings, want to create a unique design or choose from specific design elements, our team is
ready to help.
LIFE-CYCLE COST PROGRAM
A floor covering’s profitability cannot be calculated using only its purchase price. All costs related to its maintenance must also
be considered. So Tarkett developed a program that can determine a flooring’s overall cost. It has notably demonstrated that,
over 20 years, cleaning and maintenance represent on average 92% of a flooring’s life cycle cost. To reduce maintenance costs
and environmental impact, Tarkett has therefore developed solutions such as the PUR treatment.
EDUCATION OBSERVER
TEC TRAINING
We offer installation training complete with a certificate that validates your skill regarding this specific watertight installation.
RESTART
Tarkett also offers a collection service for post-installation waste, which is then treated in our recycling plants and reintegrated
into new floor coverings. You reduce your waste on site, and we improve our use of materials and resources.
If you need further information, please contact your Tarkett sales representative.

Tarkett publishes trend workbooks that analyse aspects of different indoor environments. Our Education Observer publishes
studies that show how colour and light impact children’s moods and behaviour. How can a school encourage calm and concentration, and favour release and relaxation at different points of the day? Our recommendations accompany pre-schoolers,
youngsters and students throughout their day.
