Creidim go rachaidh an cinneadh a ghlacamar chun an fhéile a athrú chun tairbhe dúinn. Tá sé mhí ann ó bhí an Fhéíle againn i mí Meán Fómhair agus ba am spreagúil é agus sinn ag cur an chláir seo le chéile. Beimid ag léiriú ár scannáin digiteacha trí teilgeóir 4K - an chéad uair riamh in Éirinn - a bhuíochas san do Holovis. Tá tacaíócht don Fhéile ag dul i méid, go háitiúil agus go náisiúnta agus anois táimid ar an bhféilire náisiúnta! I am delighted to present the fourth edition of the Dingle Film Festival. I believe the change in our festival date will prove to be an excellent choice. It’s been six months since our last festival in September and it’s been an exciting time putting together this programme. Thanks to HoloVis we will be screening our digital films through a 4K projector, which is a first for Ireland! We are also proud to be holding Ireland’s first RED users gathering. Support is growing for the festival, both locally and nationally and the festival is finding itself on both the national and international calendar. The cameras you see around the streets of Dingle are with none other than Geoff Wonfor. Geoff was a guest last year with his Beatles Anthology and was so impressed he has returned this year to make a feature documentary on the festival. I will be interviewing Geoff over a pint in Curran’s bar on Sunday to find out more about what this project means to him. Má chíonn sibh ceamaraí timpeall an Daingin is le Geoff Wonfor iad. Bhí Geoff mar aoí againn anuraidh lena Chnuasach ar na Beatles agus chuaigh an Fhéile chomh mór san i bhfeidhm air go bhfuil sé tagtha thar n-ais i mbliana chun scannán faisnéise a dhéanamh uirthi. Bead-sa ag cur agallaimh ar Geoff i dtigh Uí Churráin ar an nDomhnaigh chun níos mó a fháil amach mar gheall ar cad a chiallaíonn an togra seo dó agus gan dabht beidh cúpla pionta breá pórtair againn. Ar an gclár ceardlanna atá againn tá seimineár ar 4K/RED/DCI Dé Sathairn agus caint ar chruthú fillteáin DPC ar an Aoine. Chomh maith leis sin, tá sé d'onóir againn fáilte a chur roimh an ealaíontóir fuaime is fearr ar domhan, Tom Johnson. Cuirfidh Brendan Touhy plé ar“Todhchaí an Scannáin Éireannaigh” i láthair. Tá an-áthas orm fáilte a chur roimh Cillian Murphy leis an gcéad scannán ar an gclár 'Perrier's Bounty' agus fáilte faoi leith roimh na haíonna ar fad a ghlacfaidh páirt sa bhFéile. Our Workshop Programme includes a 4K/RED/DCI seminar on Saturday and a talk on DPC File Creation on Friday. Along with this we are honoured to welcome the world’s greatest artist in the area of sound, Tom Johnson. Brendan Touhy will present a discussion on ‘The Future of Irish Film’. Bainfear taitneamh as an mBithiúnach sa Scannán nuair a bheidh tráthnóna Bithiúnach agus Cailíní le James Cagney in 'Public Enemy' agus beidh Paddy Breathnach agus Rob Walpole ag caint mar gheall ar a scannán 'I Went Down' an scannán a thuill an t-airgead is mó do scannán Éireannach neamhspleách. I am delighted to welcome to the festival, Cillian Murphy with our opening film, ‘Perrier’s Bounty’ and to give a special welcome to all our festival guests. Ag leanúint lenár gcomhpháirtíocht le Siamsa Tíre léireofar 'Wisdom' le Andrew Zuckerman ó Nua Eabharc díbh - togra deimhin ina gcímid grúpa domhanda le dearcadh dochreidte ar an saol. Our nod to the gangster in film will be fun - A Mobsters & Molls Evening with James Cagney’s ‘The Public Enemy’ and Paddy Breathnach and Rob Walpole talking about their film ‘I Went Down’ which is still one of the highest box office records for an irish independent film. Tá scannáin fhaisnéise go láidir ar an gclár i mbliana chomh maith le scannáin Éireannacha. Tá an-áthas orm go bhfuil trí ócáid clainne ar an gclár, ceann amháin acu curtha i láthair ag Cumann Tráchtála an Daingin agus atá saor in aisce. Continuing our partnership with Siamsa Tíre we bring you ‘Wisdom’ by Andrew Zuckerman from New York, an incredible project which brings together a profound and global group of extraordinary perspectives on life. Documentary features strong this year as does Irish film and I am delighted we have three family events with one feature being presented by the Dingle Business Chamber absolutely free. Finally, I asked Michael O’Sullivan to come up with his choice to close the Festival this year. It is with real pleasure that we bring you the Kubrick classic ‘Barry Lyndon’ on 35mm print as Michael’s choice. See you in the Phoenix, the Cinemobile and the Clubs where there will be everything from traditional music to 20’s swing. maurice galway ceo/artistic director Ar deireadh chuir mé ceist ar Michael O'Suillivan rogha a dhéanamh chun deireadh a chur leis an bhFéile i mbliana. With every hard man in Dublin on their trail it looks like Michael won’t make it through the next 24 hours; however, The Grim Reaper and a gang of savage dogs have a funny way of intervening. Cillian first garnered international attention for his performance as the reluctant survivor Jim in Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later. Following Batman Begins, he starred opposite Rachel McAdams in Wes Craven’s Red Eye and received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as Patrick "Kitten" Brady in Neil Jordan's Breakfast on Pluto. Cillian starred in Ken Loach’s 2006 Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or winner The Wind That Shakes the Barley. He re-teamed with Boyle and writer Alex Garland (28 Days Later) on Sunshine (2007). Cillian’s screen credits also include Beeban Kidron’s forthcoming Hippie Hippie Shake, John Maybury’s Edge of Love, John Crowley's Intermission, Peter Webber's Girl With a Pearl Earring, Anthony Minghella’s Cold Mountain, How Harry Became a Tree, On the Edge, and Sunburn. Cillian is currently working on Inception (Warner Bros.), a contemporary sci-fi thriller set within the architecture of the mind, the film, which also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, marks his third collaboration with director Christopher Nolan. In 2005, Murphy made an indelible impression as Dr. Jonathan Crane/The Scarecrow in Batman Begins and reprised the role in last year’s The Dark Knight. Cillian made his mark on stage with a stunning performance in Enda Walsh’s Disco Pigs and later starred in the excellent film version directed by Kirsten Sheridan. For decades American presidents have cried the woes of our nation’s addiction to foreign oil. Hollow campaign promises project a future that can be independent and sustainable. Yet the truth is, the energy policy of the USA has only been a strategy of defense, not offense. We are fighting a cold war on energy, and both Wall Street and Main Street have no idea what to do. We will see a new form of Wildcatting in alternatives, and learn how many oilmen believe that being shackled to cheap oil is only destroying our empire. Many old timers realize that the oil industry must change, advising that will take everything to meet America’s future energy needs. ‘AMasterpiece’ DavidClifton,President,RationalBroadcasting easyDCP software workshop with heikosparenberg friday19th march DE hAOINE 19ú MARTA thephoenixcinema 4pm admissiOn €10 Heiko Sparenberg, born in 1977, received his Diploma degree (MS)in Computer Science from the University of Hagen, Germany, in 2006. This Hitler has only one objective; justice for his people, sovereignty for his people. If that is Hitler, right... then let me be a Hitler ten fold.” Robert Mugabe Michael Campbell is one of the few hundred white farmers left in Zimbabwe since President Robert Mugabe began his violent 'Land Reform' programme in 2000. Since then the country has descended into chaos. In 2008 Mike took the unprecedented step of challenging President Robert Mugabe in an International Court; accusing Robert Mugabe and his government of racial discrimination and violations of basic human rights. What follows is an intimate moving and often terrifying account of one man and his family’s extraordinary courage in the face of overwhelming injustice and brutality. Set against the tumultuous 2008 Presidential elections Mugabe and the White African follows Mike and son-in-law Ben Freeth's harrowing attempt to save their farm and with it the homes and livelihoods of 500 black workers and their families. Filmed over 12 months, a gripping courtroom drama unfolds whilst all the time Mike, his family and the farm workers face the all too real threats of Mugabe's wrath on the farm. After months of frightening threats and a horrific attack the Court’s judges finally rule unanimously in Mike’s and Ben’s favour. They return to the farm. But will Mugabe and his henchmen abide the Courts decision? Much of this film was shot covertly. Little was known about Withers since he’d left the business of music behind, and his music, which includes the classics “Ain’t No Sunshine”, “Lean On Me”, and “Just the Two of Us”, had left its mark on the world in general and these two filmmakers in particular. But they soon found that access to Withers was not freely granted, and that many doors would open, only to slam back shut. With such limited access, their attentions shifted to trying to produce a concert of his music, which would provide a narrative thread for a discussion of his influence. Then things changed. His door cracked slightly open. First, a four hour interview! Then a trip to his home town of SlabFork, WestVirginia, the place to which he swore he’d never return. Four hours became forty. Forty is now three hundred hours, filmed over two years, a personal journey into the life of a complex, fascinating, and profound man. shorttelemafia Telemafia is what happens when a telemarketer picks the wrong consumer to call! Martin Scorsese screened this film to several cast and crew before beginning ‘The Aviator’. Cagney’s performance today is considered the beginning of modern screen acting. Bristling with ‘20’s style dialogue and desperation under the masterful directional eye of William A. Wellman, this is a virtual time capsule of the prohibition era: taut, gritty and hard-hitting. The festival is honoured to present Michael’s choice at this year’s film festival. Barry Lyndon is Stanley Kubrick's epic costume drama based on William Makepeace Thackeray's picaresque novel. It tells the story of a young rogue who wanders through life getting lost in various adventures, meeting his share of women and oddball characters. When Redmond Barry (Ryan O'Neal) trying desperately to maintain an Irish brogue becomes jealous of Captain Quin's advances on Barry's beloved cousin, he challenges the man to a duel. Winning the duel, young Barry is forced to leave his home and his mother, and off on his adventures he goes. He meets thieves, lonely soldier brides, Prussian army leaders, and British widows, inventing new stories about himself at every turn of the road. This film is lush and magnificent, sparkling with colour, every frame reminiscent of the finest European art. The blues of the Prussian army uniforms and the reds of the British contrast sharply with the majestic green land and mountains in nearly every background. Kubrick often begins a shot close in, then zooms out to reveal the beautiful natural landscape and ornate rooms surrounding the now seemingly insignificant characters. With rousing performances from O'Neal, Marisa Berenson, Hardy Kruger, and Leonard Rossiter, jaw-dropping camerawork, spectacular natural lighting, and a marvelous classical-music soundtrack painstakingly put together by Kubrick, Barry Lyndon is a dramatic romantic epic that may be Kubrick's most beautiful film. Photo: Elaine Kennedy the phoenix cinema The Phoenix Cinema was built in 1938 by two brothers, John and James C. Houlihan. They were very astute men, well before their time, and they had many interests including the supply of electricity to the whole town before the ESB. In their new cinema they placed two projectors and had pictures twice weekly - Thursdays and Sundays. Queues - big or small - formed for the shows. The cinema doubled up as a dance venue, with a superb maple floor with regular dances at festive times such as Easter and Christmas. In the course of time John Moore, another Dingle man, bought the property from the Houlihans and after many years of profitable trading decided to close down and sell. Prospective buyers included a man interested in turning the cinema into a grain store. In 1979 Michael O’Sullivan bought it and had it renovated and refurbished. Michael O’Sullivan's love of film is paramount and with his three children has been running a film club every Tuesday night for over 20 years. As a consequence, the people of Dingle and those who take the 60 mile (or more) round trip from Tralee or Killorglin sit down to the best of art house cinema on offer from around the world. The Club is very much a family affair. Coffee and biscuits are served by Michael's son, Sean, who also doubles as the projectionist and the front of house is managed by Michael's son, Francis and his daughter Kathleen. Every Tuesday night Michael takes centre stage in front of the screen to introduce the week’s film and to tell us what to expect next week. His platform is created by Sean with an electric bulb hanging from a coat stand. Michael stands beside the light in his overcoat and cap with the poster for next week's film held in his grasp. His soliloquy on the film is to be savored and experienced. The doors open at 8pm for a 9pm start - coming any later than 8.30 one runs a risk of not obtaining a seat. The theatre itself is a beautiful experience with the walls draped and soundproofed in oyster-coloured material with red carpeted sloped floor and blue seats. It was designed by the award-winning Desmond McMahon, the same architect responsible for designing the new Croke Park. A point of note is a well stocked video/DVD rental shop attached to the cinema, a rare practice anywhere in Ireland. Also, when filming of Far and Away took place in Dingle, the daily rushes were watched in the Phoenix Cinema by Ron Howard and his crew. The Stars of that film, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, later went on to make Eyes Wide Shut with Stanley Kubrick. The Phoenix Cinema is one of the last of its kind - a truly independent cinema. We pay tribute to it. 29 Chinua Achebe Richard Adams Madeleine Albright Buzz Aldrin David Amram Alan Arkin Burt Bacharach Frits Bolkestein Dave Brubeck Dick Bruna Zbegniew Brzezinski Chuck Close Billy Connolly Bryce Courtenay Terence Conran Dame Judi Dench Clint Eastwood Dr. Garret Fitzgerald Malcom Fraser Frank Gehry Jane Goodall Nadine Gordimer Harald Zur Hausen Vaclav Havel Denis Healy John Hume Helmut Jahn Billie Jean King Edward M.
