GUIDE TO THE 2013 MILL RACE FESTIVAL EVENTS
In addition to the concerts that are prominent throughout the
weekend of the festival, these other activities are also happening:
WORKSHOPS:
Workshops in Ontario folk festivals are a
combination of education, performance
and entertainment. These take place
on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons
on the Mill Race and the Civic Square
stages. Various performers from different
backgrounds will be put together on stage
under a specific theme. These may involve
a number of fiddlers from different groups,
or a selection of singers could be asked to
share songs about specific themes. These
are a spontaneous experience of informal
music making by festival artists.
SINGAROUNDS:
Singarounds are informal gatherings
where musicians/singers gather in a circle,
unplugged, sharing songs together in an
informal social setting. Anyone can join in
and the intent is to provide a place for folk
song enthusiasts who are not necessarily
hired performers to participate in making
music at the festival.
This year, the Singarounds will be held
from 1-3pm on the Saturday and Sunday
afternoons of the Festival in the South Waterloo Naval Veterans Hall on the corner
of Cambridge and Colborne Streets, just a
couple blocks north of City Hall. Acoustic
workshops will be held at this venue both
days from 3-5pm.
PUB SESSIONS
These are a mainstay at British and Irish
folk festivals. Pub sessions are for those
who enjoy playing or listening to traditional folk music. Held at the Kiwi on
Dickson Street, these sessions will be
hosted by specially appointed players, but
anyone who plays the appropriate music is
welcome to join in. All weekend long and
throughout the year as well.
YOUTH SHOWCASE
The Youth Showcase is intended to assist
young musicians to gain some performance experience. Located in the Queen’s
Square Library & Gallery on Saturday
afternoon. See schedule for details.
OPEN STAGE
This will follow after the Children’s performances on the Water Street Stage and is
in the same venue. Singers and musicians
who would like to have a chance to perform should speak with the volunteers at
that Stage and sign up. Hosted by the Mill
Race Folk Club.

The Bilge Rats
The Bilge Rats are the singing
component of The Toronto
Morris Men.
When resting in licensed
premises to recover from their
dance exertions, The Bilge
Rats have been known to
break into song. Mostly, this
is the joyous uplifting style of
English folksong with rousing
choruses that are best sung
with throats well lubricated
with pints of ale. They will be hosting the annual Johnny Collins memorial singing session in the Kiwi Saturday afternoon.

Bourrée à Trois
Follow the sound of hurdy gurdies and
bagpipes right into the heart of France.
Sandra, Andrea and Robin will share with
you their passion for the traditional instruments and compelling tunes of a real “bal
folk” (a traditional village soirée). They will
lead you in bourrées, scottishes, mazurkas
and more, and may even take you on the
occasional side trip to the British Isles. All
that’s missing is the château! Two hurdy
gurdies and a bagpipe. Three musicians
enamored with French traditional music.
They are : Andrea Haddad, a veteran hurdy
gurdy player and teacher of French and
music, Sandra Spencer, who extends her
hurdy gurdy and other musical expertise all
the way to the Indonesian gamelan, and piper Robin Aggus, master of woodwinds & bagpipes, who can often be found playing in local pubs and leading processions all around
southern Ontario. Each year they come together at festival “Chants de Vielle” in Quebec
to play the hottest French song and dance tunes this side of the Seine which they are now
looking forward to sharing with you at the Mill Race.

Comas
Comas have been since March 2003.but
Coming from diverse musical backgrounds
and different parts of the world, they found
a similar approach to music in each other.
Combining their many cultural influences,
they forged a unique blend of traditional
Irish music which had them playing at
major festivals in Ireland, Belgium, France,
England, Denmark and Holland. Aidan
Burke (Ireland) was brought up in the Irish
culture of music song and dance. He has been playing music for 31 years, mainly the
fiddle, drums and bodhrán, but he also plays guitar, mandolin, banjo and a whole host of
percussion instruments. Although Philip Masure (Belgium) plays a number of
instruments (guitar, cittern, bouzouki) & vocals he is mostly known as a guitar player.
He has specialized in open-tuning and has played with a number of well-known bands.
The foundation of Irish traditional music is the pulse of its drum, the Bodhrán. And no
other percussionist tills that ground better than Jackie Mora (USA who also does vocals &
other percussion. Isaac Alderson (USA) began playing Irish music while growing up in his
native Chicago. He specializes in flutes and uillean pipes.

The English Session
The English Session consists of
a diverse and motley group of
individuals who regularly meet
at pubs in Cambridge to play
English traditional folk music
together. Some are members
of Tethera, County Vaudeville, Bouree a Trois, Hunter’s
Corners, Cotillion, the Toronto
Morris Men and Wolf at the
Door Molly Dancers. Others are not associated with any
bands, but just like to come out
and join in. Pubs include The Argyle Arms and the Kiwi, but they’ll go anywhere that has
decent British beer and/or Canadian microbrewery products that will have them!

The Everlovin’ Jug Band
After bobbling down the highway
from Montreal, following the geese,
they landed in the city of Waterloo,
Ontario. Now living in “The Duke
of Erb”, a small venue/studio, the
Jug Band is busy at work on new
material for your listening pleasure!
The Ever-Lovin’ Jug Band plays
original tunes in the style of the
jug bands of the 1920s, plus some
old-time, ragtime, and other music
of a bygone era or two. The band
features Bill Howard on guitar
and kazoo, and Minnie Hart on
banjolin, violin, kazoo, jug, and
washtub. These two take turns leading songs with their unique voices, but the real magic
goes down when the harmonies come out. In recent months, the band has been performing as a four- or five-piece, depending on who’s available, with an extra guitar/harmonica/
jug player, a cello/tenor banjo player, and a fiddle/harmonica/tuba player.

Fasta
Featuring musicians from Ireland and Québec, Fásta summons up the finest tunes and
songs from its Celtic traditions. Using uilleann pipes, whistle, fiddle, guitar, mandola
& voice, Fásta bridges these two cultures to create its original and unique sound. It all
started when Sophie and Fiachra met at an Arts Festival in Ireland in 2008. Sophie was
on a tour with her French Canadian band and both herself and Fiachra were fascinated
by the subtle similarities and differences in their music traditions. They embarked on a
music adventure as duo Sophie & Fiachra, that took them to the USA, Canada, Australia,
New-Zealand, Europe and the Middle East. They have since recruited a guitar player to

Mary Humphreys & Anahata
Based in East Anglia, UK, Mary &
Anahata rediscover local songs and tunes

The Horables
They play Klezmer, Django style
jazz, polkas, Gypsy dance tunes,
rags from the age of steam and the
occasional Cajun tune just to scare
the horses. They strive to evoke
the immediacy and excitement
of acoustic music played spontaneously on a street corner, in a
market or at a village dance party.
They rose from the ashes of a band
known for its activism as well as
its music, the all woman Klezmer
band Ponegranate.

Juneyt
Since moving to Canada in 1999,
Juneyt has built a large, dedicated
following through his regular,
electric performances throughout
the Kitchener-Waterloo area and
beyond. Juneyt’s peers recognize
him as a highly talented, professional musician whose passionate

nominations for the KW Arts
Awards in both 2010 and 2011.
Combined with his impressive
musical skills, Juneyt’s heart for
his community has led him to become the official musician for a number of long-standing charities and fundraising events including Nutrition for Learning, The Alzheimer’s

Enoch Kent
Scotland born and now Canada-based, this legendary
interpreter and songsmith’s love of traditional music was
first inspired by his family. Enoch Kent’s own songwriting craft was further developed through The Singers Club
(aka “The Critics Group”) which he co-founded with
internationally renowned folksingers, Ewan MacColl and
Peggy Seeger. Since immigrating to Canada in the 60s,
Enoch performed in many folk clubs and festivals across
the country. However, after a 36-year recording hiatus, at
the age of 70, Enoch well made up for lost time with his
return to the studio and the release of 3 outstanding CDs,
“I’m A Workin’ Chap” (2002), “Love, Lust & Loathing”
(2003), and “For The Women” (2005). These albums include such gems as the “The
Farm Auction”, “No More Cod On The Banks”, “The Widows O’ War”, and “Edinburgh
Maggie”. Enoch’s music is treasured by traditional music enthusiasts with a passion for
story-songs, love & betrayal ballads, and gritty politics. While his songs are deeply rooted
in the traditional Scottish style, much of his subject matter is Canadian, giving his music
a unique cultural blend. What’s more is Enoch’s natural storytelling style complemented
by a ferocious wit and kitchen-range warmth.

LightofEast
This is an instrumental group based in
London, Ontario. The band performs music
from the Near and Middle East, including
traditional, folk, classical Arabic, Greek Rembetika, and modern urban music of the 20th
century from this area. from regions such as
Armenia, Greece (Asia Minor - Smyrni, and
Konstantinoupoli), Turkey, and other Middle
Eastern countries such as Egypt, Lebanon,
and Syria. The Light of East Ensemble has
appeared in various venues in Southwestern
Ontario Light of East also performs educational concerts for schools. The Light of East
Ensemble are the winners of the 2011 Jack
Richardson Music Award in the category of
World Music. CBC’s “In Town and Out”, “Bandwidth”, and “The Bridge”, have broadcast their music.

Donald McGeoch
In Scotland during the mid sixties Donald
became interested in Traditional Scottish
& Irish folk music. In 1974 he moved to
Canada & continued singing & playing traditional folk music & has been performing
ever since. Since 1980, he has been writing
& performing original songs, some of which
have strong ties to his native Scotland. His
song “Homeland” has been recorded by
many artists & “all You Ever Wanted”, a
song about immigrant children from the
U.K. took 2nd place in the 1996 “Songs
from the Heart” competition sponsored
by the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals.
Donald continues to perform at festivals,
folk clubs & private events. His love of folk
music, & a passion to entertain is evident in

NUA
NUA is an innovative new trad trio,
bringing a fresh and unique sound to
traditional music, with both original
and traditional compositions from
Ireland and Scotland. NUA consists of
three award-winning members: fiddle
player James M Law, guitarist Graeme
McGillivray and bodhrán player Jacob
McCauley. The trio is also well known
for their exciting incorporation of odd
time signatures and polyrhythms, which
give the music an electrifying lift and
spontaneity. Each member adds their own distinctive sound and influence to the music.
Although they are a trio with a sole melody player, the brilliant multi-tasking of each
member is demonstrated countless times with perhaps a guitar-driven flat-picked melody,
rhythmic fiddle playing, or melodic bodhrán playing to add to the mix. The ability for

Chris Ricketts
21st Century Shantyman, International
Acclaim and only 24 years old. Chris
Ricketts brings his youthful vision to
songs drawn from deep in the folk tradition. Outward Bound is the culmination
of several years of rapid musical growth
for singer and guitarist Chris Ricketts.
The new album brings together his love
of sea shanties, his formidable instrumental skills. The roots of Chris Ricketts
love affair with shanty songs lie in seafaring Portsmouth, where he was born and bred and involved in the city’s acoustic and folk
music scene since the age of 15. After attending one of Fairport Convention’s Cropredy
festivals, he realized just how strong a passion he held for British folk music, as well as the
rock energy that such bands bring to the genre. He subsequently began developing both
his own folk repertoire and unique approach to this material. Chris now works on his
album of original sea shanties and it is due for release in the summer of 2013.

Tom Nunn and Norm Tellier
Tom Nunn and Norm Tellier
The local duo of Tom Nunn from
Kitchener, on guitar and vocals,
and Norm Tellier from Cambridge, mandolin and vocals, have
many years of combined musical experience. Tom started out
performing in his father’s southern
Ontario dance band before moving into the folk and bluegrass
scenes, while Norm has stuck
primarily to bluegrass throughout
his 35 years of playing. Norm
and Tom played together in the successful bluegrass band Northern City Limits and
have received numerous awards and nominations from the Central Canadian Bluegrass
Awards. Although this bluegrass background certainly comes through in their music, their
selection of vocal and instrumental material touches on various genres. Tom and Norm
are pleased to be back playing at the Mill Race festival once again.

Dave Weber & Anni Fentiman
Dave and Anni joined forces in 1985,
after spending many years around the
folk club scene, in which time they
featured on several albums made by
other performers. Although Dave
and Anni perform substantially at
home in the UK they also make at
least one trip each year to the United
States, where they have an established
following and have also performed
in Holland, Denmark and Finland.
Anni has developed a specialist repertoire of songs originating from her native North East,
and Dave has been writing songs in traditional vein since 1982 many of these are widely
sung and have become part of the general song repertoire of singers all over the world.

Crumbly the Clown
Crumbly is a top notch entertainer who has the
unique ability to communicate with the crowd using
his tongue-in-cheek humour which appeals to both
adults and children. Crumbly delights his audience
with his ability to unicycle, juggle, do magic and
twist balloon animals. He cleverly incorporates
safety and friendship into his show while using
audience participation. After 24 years experience as
a children’s entertainer, Crumbly intuitively knows
how to win over even the most timid and terrified children. By the end of Crumbly’s
show even those children are eager for more.

Zoe the Clown
Zoe the Clown from The Chuckle Gang is delighted
to be greeting families again at the 2011 Mill Race
Festival. Based in Kitchener, Zoe has been joyfully playing with audiences in Ontario, USA and
Dominican Republic for over 20 years. Having theatrical training, her repertoire also includes magic,

For 15 years, Charlie has been
running a neighbourhood
music studio called Little Fingers
Music where students of all levels
study piano, guitar and vocal
music. When Charlie performs
or teaches, he never fails to get
children and parents alike engaged

Sarah Granskou
Canadian, Sarah Granskou is rooted in
Norwegian oral tradition and branching out, known for her intricate poetic
storytelling and lyrics. With a sense of
humour and aesthetics, she integrates
singing, mouth harp, fiddle and puppetry
in a fluid narrative, reflecting ancient processes with an altogether contemporary
flair. She has shared her work with hundreds of festival, community and school
audiences internationally, and is currently
the 2013 Folk-Artist-in-Residence at
the Joseph Schneider House. Recently,
Sarah has been collaborating with artist,
Cristin Osborne, in creating performance
marionettes of a variety of materials for
musical storytelling.

YOUTH SHOWCASE PERFORMERS
Benjamin Rogers
Ben and his family have attended the Mill Race
since he was very young. On his 7th birthday
all Benjamin wanted was a violin. He has
been playing fiddle now for nine years and his
repertoire includes alternative, Celtic, and Old
Time fiddle tunes. He has composed many
of his own pieces. Ben has played at the Mill
Race for three years during the Kiwi music sessions, and very much looks forward to it again
this year! Ben can be found at the Brantford
Farmers Market most Friday and Saturdays
during the summer where he entertains patrons with his love of fiddle tunes.. His many
talents include mandolin, guitar, mandocello,
and clarinet, but his first love is his fiddle.
Benjamin’s goal is to attend Humber College
and pursue a career in music. Ben is now 16
years old, and has been known on many occasion to be heard saying he LOVES his fiddle.
Emelene Rosen
Emelene Rosen’s feet are firmly planted in the
folk music world and her roots are growing
stronger every year. She is an experienced
violinist and viola player with an extensive
repertoire that includes Classical, Irish,
Klezmer, Gypsy, Baltic, and English tunes. She
plays regularly at the English Pub sessions and
has played for the Queen’s Plate, Cambridge
Symphony Orchestra, Williamsburg Town Festival, Waterloo Regional Police, and Westfield
Heritage Village. She has had a passion for the
instrument from the age of two, and has been
formally studying violin and viola for the past
51/2 years. She says that she cannot imagine a
world without music.

Raven Westlake
Raven’s love of music began at Kindermusik when she was 16 months old. There
she made many good friends and fond
musical memories. After graduating from
Kindermusik, Raven began studying piano
with teacher, Amber Morphy. Raven has
been playing piano for four years, and is
now studying voice as well, with the same
teacher. Raven has performed as a soloist
in school concerts, Operetta Day Camp in
Guelph, and the Guelph Kiwanis music
festival. This is her first time performing at
the Mill Race Folk Festival. Folk music is
Raven’s favourite category of music to sing.

Forest City Morris
Forest City Morris & Sword from London
Ontario danced out for the first time in
1978, drawing inspiration from the dances
of the village of Kirtlington in Oxfordshire,
U.K. Thirty-two years later, this women’s
side of Cotswold Morris dancers maintains
the ancient tradition while having fun!
Over the years, the side has performed
at numerous festivals and dance events
throughout Canada, the U.S., and even
Bermuda and England. The Mill Race Festival is delighted to have Forest City Morris
perform once again.

Orange Peel Morris
Orange Peel Morris Dancers is the Border
Morris dancing troupe from the
Orangeville area northwest of Toronto.
These dancers do Border Morris, an old
English folk dance performance style from
the English/Welsh borders of Worcestershire, Herefordshire, and Shropshire,
adding in their own inventions, plus those
that have been gleaned from others. High
spirits and high energy - “a rude vigor” typify Border Morris. This group also typifies the essence of Morris dancing: “A chance
to perform in the street, to show off, to be loud or silly or raucous, to violate normal
standards of behavior and not only get away with it, but be applauded for it.”

Toronto Morris Men
While Morris dancing has been performed
in England since before the 1400’s the
Toronto Morris Men (TfMM) have only
been performing their exuberant style of
morris dancing since 1985. The TfMM
have danced throughout Canada, the
United States, and have performed in
England and Iceland. They are the only
Canadian dance group to ever perform in
the Carnaval de Santiago de Cuba They
take dancing seriously but could never be
accused of taking themselves seriously! The Bilge Rats, the singing incarnation of the
Toronto Morris Men, are also back at the festival this year with their raucous shanties,

Wolf at the Door
Wolf at the Door is a Cambridge based
dance team that specialize in Molly dancing,
which is associated with the Eastern Counties of England and with Cambridgeshire
