καλλιτέχνη Kaspar Jancis και την ταινία Work in Progress του Ούγγρου Tamas Patrovic.
Rejected) με το World of Tomorrow, μια ταινία που μας ταξιδεύει με τα μάτια μιας μικρής
Το We can’t live without Cosmos του επίσης
Η ταινία You Look Like Me του
Ο ανατρεπτικός Theodor Ushev (Βουλγαρία – Καναδάς) παρουσιάζει την ταινία The Sleepwalker εμπνευσμένο από το ποίημα Sonámbulo του Federico Garcia Lorca.
ακόλουθοι σκηνοθέτες και ταινίες: Michaela Pavlatova Different Kinds of People (Τσεχία),
Mirai Mizue Retro Future (Ιαπωνία), Gabriel Osorio Bear Story (Χιλή), Sarina Nihei Small
People with Hats (Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο), Dahee Jeong Man on the chair (Γαλλία), William
Garratt, Slaves of the Rave (Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο), Xaver Xylophon Roadtrip (Γερμανία),
NaiWei Liu Something Important (Taiwan), Jacky de Groen Eclipse (Ολλανδία), Aristotelis Maragkos Α Portrait (Ελλάδα), Natalia Chernysheva Two Friends (Γαλλία), Chintis
Chernyseva Life with Herman H. Rott (Εσθονία, Κροατία, Δανία), Frank Ternier 8 Bullets
(Γαλλία), Paul Cabon Storm Hits Jacket (Γαλλία), Nagata TakeshI και Kazue Monno, Track
(Ιαπωνία), Maryam Kashkoolinia, When I was a Child (Ιράν), Islam Ahmed Elsayed Oh La
Lah (Αίγυπτος), Max Porter και Ru Kuwahata, Between Times (Ολλανδία), Declan Byrne
Benjamin Goes to a Swingers Party (Αυστραλία)
σκηνοθέτη Andreas Hykade Nuggets, My Self Smoke και My Self Universe.
Ferrand κ.α.
Anim’est Romania, με τίτλο Creepy Animation Night.
ντοκιμαντερ-animation Seth’s Dominion του Luc Chamberland.
Čadež.

Prince Ki-Ki-Do της Grega Mastnak, The Elephant and the Bycycle της Olesya Shchukina,
Nikola Tesla’s Secret Laboratory του Bruno Razum, Ivan and the Wolf της Anna Levinson,
Caterpillar and Hen της Michela Donini, Children’s time της Nina Bisyarina, A little star της
Svetlana Andrianova, Bears on the Road της Nadia Meezen και άλλες.

While we prepare to celebrate the art of animation at the 14th Edition of Countryside Animafest Cyprus - Views of the World, a great battle being waged all around us.
The battle today is the same as in every generation: it is a battle for a fair world in which
every person can live with dignity and in which the majority of the people will not be oppressed by the privileged few.
Independent animation filmmakers, armed with their passion and their talent, are as ever
sensitive to the global sociopolitical issues that galvanize the world’s creative arena.
This year the majority of the authors whose work is presented at our festival turn their
focus on human society, as our fragile democratic system is weighed down by greed, fear
and inequality.
Of course independent animation cinema expresses its socio-political commentary in its
own idiosyncratic way, through visual poetry, surrealism, humor and dreams.
Τhis year we will see once more how authors experiment with a combination of techniques, both handmade and digital, aiming as always to push the boundaries of this
innovative art form.
This year’s program includes two world premieres by two distinguished artists: Piano, by
Estonian director Kaspar Jancis (also the artist of this year’s festival poster) and Work in
Progress by Hungarian director Tamas Patrovits.
I would also like to mention some of the films that stand out in this year’s program: World
of Tomorrow, by Oscar-nominated American director Don Hertzfeldt, We can’t live without
Cosmos by Oscar-nominated Russian director Konstantin Bronzit, You Look Like Me by
Canadian director Pierre Herbert. The Sleepwalker by Theodor Ushev (Bulgaria-Canada).
This year’s line up also includes great filmmakers such as: Michaela Pavlatova (Different
Kinds of People), Mirai Mizoue (Retro Future), Gabriel Osorio (Bear Story), Sarina Nihei
(Small People with Hats), Dahee Jeong (Man on the chair), William Garratt, (Slaves of
the Rave), Xaver Xylophon (Roadtrip), NaiWei Liu (Something Important, Jacky de Groen
(Eclipse), Aristotelis Maragkos (Α Portrait), Natalia Chernysheva (Two Friends), Chintis
Chernyseva (Life with Herman H. Rott), Frank Ternier (8 Bullets), Paul Cabon (Storm Hits
Jacket, Nagata TakeshI και Kazue Monno, (Track), Maryam Kashkoolinia, (When I was a
Child, Islam Ahmed Elsayed (Oh La Lah), Max Porter και Ru Kuwahata, (Between Times),
Declan Byrne (Benjamin Goes to a Swingers Party).
We are proud to present an array of intensely political films by authors from neighboring countries. Independent Syrian director Jalal Maghout presents his latest animated
documentary Suleima, which tells the story of one a thousands of anonymous women that
fight against dependency and injustice in Syria. Iranian director Sarah Saidan, with her film
Beach Flags, well-received in many festivals including Cannes, Sundance, and Clermont
Ferrand, focuses on women’s rights in Iran. Italian director Simone Massi, whose work
stands out for its strong political message expressed with lyricism and references to the
cinema of resistance (cinema della rezistenza), participates in the festival with his latest
film L’attesa del Maggio. In this year’s festival we present the work of two more filmmakers
from Italy, Mario Addis with Pene e Crudite and Tess Martin with Mario.
One of the festival’s perennial goals is to reach and inspire a wide and diverse audience.
We aim to open a gateway of communication with current aesthetics, techniques and
themes from the international arena. Two years ago we inaugurated the National Competition Program. At the same time we continue to enrich our academic and educational activities throughout the year. We hope that in this way we may contribute to the development
of the field of animation here in Cyprus.
This year’s National Competition includes more than 10 films by the following authors,
professionals and students: Panagiotis Mesaritis, Afroditi Constantinou, Zinonas Ioannou,
Sholeh Zahraei, Elli Kyriakou, Kosmas Nonis, Maria Spivak, Reveka Stylianou, Liassis
Karasavvas, Charis Frangou, Paschalis Paschali, Eleni Chadriotou and Andreas Ioannou.
Parallel to the Cypriot program we present an animation video installation based on the
film “La Jetée” (1962) by Chris Marker made by students of the course “Animation Applications in Art” of the Cyprus University of Technology.
In addition to the competition programs we present a series of sidebar events which
include tributes, exhibitions, workshops and concerts.
The Hambis Printmaking Museum will host an exhibition of Posters by Piotr Dumala
(Grand Prix in last year’s Countryside Animafest Cyprus for the film Hippopotami). A retrospective of Piotr Dumala’s films will also be showing daily in the medieval hall at the main
festival venue (Manor House in Palaepaphos), from July 16 to 18. The Hambis Printmaking
Museum will also host an exhibition of puppets and drawings by Špela Čadež (Grand Prix
in 2013 edition of Countryside Animafest Cyprus for the film Boles)
In a special midnight screening on Friday at the main festival venue the audience will have
the opportunity to enjoy a tribute to Anim’est Romania: Creepy Animation Night a program
curated by the director and founder of Anim’est Mihai Mitrica is filled with beheadings,
alien invasions, ghosts and evisceration, morbid black humour and weird sex. The films in
this program explore the dark side of animation.
Also on Friday we present a special Documantary Screening about the renowned Canadian Graphic Novelist Seth, one of the world’s greatest storytellers in the form.
The sidebar events include two specialized workshops. Špela Čadež will lead a “Puppet
Animation Workshop” at the King Nikokles Inn in Nikokleia (July 13 -15) in the form of a
residency. The workshop will focus on the creation of Puppets through the use of simple
materials. The second workshop, entitled “Improvisational Animation Workshop” will be
lead by Tamas Patrovic at the Hambis Printmaking Museum in Platanisteia (July 16 to 18).
The workshops are addressed mostly to artists, professionals, teachers, and other creators with some knowledge of animation.
At this year’s children’s program, the young audience will enjoy films curated in collaboration with ANIMATEKA International Animated Film Festival in Slovenia and a children
animation workshop lead by Panayiota Michael.
.
We are also thrilled to be presenting two wondeful music events: At the opening of the
festival Dimitris Spyrou and Christina Papakyriakou will present a panorama of Visual & Oral
Stories and on closing night we host a concert by one of the most acclaimed artists of
the Ethnic Scene worldwide, Greek singer Savvina Yiannatou with her group Primavera
en Salonico. The closing concert is organized in collaboration with the European Cultural
Capital Pafos 2017.
We would like to express our warm gratitude to the Ministry of Education and Culture for
their continued support. We would also like to extend our thanks to the Hellenic Bank for
sponsoring the festival’s awards.
We thank the Cyprus Department of Antiquities, the Kouklia Community Council, the University of Nicosia and Cyprus University of Technology for their support.
We would like to extend our warm thanks to the volunteers and the festival audience for
continuing to encourage our efforts with their active participation. Finally we thank all the
filmmakers for participating with their films.
We welcome warmly our distinguished guests from Cyprus and abroad, whose presence
is an honour to our festival. A special welcome to our distinguished international jury members, Piotr Dumala, Špela Čadež and Tonia Mishiali. We wish them a happy and creative
stay in Cyprus.
Have a wonderful festival!

international recognition; Mate to Measure,
(2004) and Lovesick, (2007). Since 2008 Špela
Čadež has been working as an independent
animation film director and producer. Her latest film, Boles, has been screened worldwide,
receiving over 40 awards, distinctions and
nominations.

A bit of polish
We have the honor to present to you some of
the best animated films from the filmography
of Piotr Dumała. As one of the most important
filmmakers in Poland, Dumała created not only
a vivid style but also imprinted his works in a
landscape of our central european fragility. He
is famous mostly because of his sophisticated
technique, called “the destructive method”.
The artist used to scratch his frames on a
plaster one by one. Each of them had been
photographed and covered with pigment once
again. The only frame left as evidence of creative action was the last one.
The audience will have a chance to watch animations filmed during the majority of Dumała’s
filmography, hence everyone could see the
evolution of style, subjects and atmosphere
within his works, starting with humorous Little
Black Riding Hood, through his emotional and
poetic Gentle Spirit, to somehow new Fight,
love and work. In his latest works Piotr Dumała
started to use digital technology. Nevertheless,
none of them lost their picturesque class and
elegance.
A great appendix to his artistic heritage will
be a small exhibition of posters made by Piotr
Dumała. Each of them represents α Film or a
cultural event is its essential vibe - depressive
sometimes but always honest and drawn in the
tradition of the Polish school of poster.
As a curator and film expert I strongly recommend this small tribute to Piotr Dumała. He is
an artist who has remained firmly loyal to the
ideas he wanted to communicate through his
work and who shaped his craft from the beginning of his career.

το χιουμοριστικό Little Black Riding Hood, θα
καινούργιο Fight, love and work.

Špela Čadež
μια ποιήτρια του puppet animation
Špela Čadež
a puppet animation poet from Slovenia
When i first saw Špela’s student film Mate to
Measure, i couldn’t believe my eyes that a
Slovenian director made such a strong authorial debut. Špela fell in love with animation
by chance, attending a puppet animation
workshop during her study of interactive
design at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. With her diploma puppet animation film
Lovesick, based on her dream, she learned all
she needed. Her choice for the technique of
puppet animation proved to be the right one:
she followed a historical tradition of Slovenian
animation. Without knowing it, Špela brought
this tradition to the highest quality level. After
school, she spent 4 years carefully mastering her professional debut film Boles and
achieved the biggest international success
in the history of contemporary Slovenian cinema. It is an unbelievable story of persistence
of authorial vision, stubbornness and love
for cinema and the arts. There is so much
“stillness” in the stop motion animation of
Boles that only few masters have managed to
achieve before. The decision to use Slovenian
language to adapt Maxim Gorky’s short story
Her Lover to bring a distinctive melody to her
originally built characters was risky, but at the
end again proved right. During the production of Boles, Špela and her co-screenwriter
and life partner Grega had a baby, so it was
unbelievable how she managed to direct her
small team in order to bring the production to
a successful end. And I remember she was
not sure that the film would work during the
making of. Boles has been screened at over a
hundred festivals all over the world and won
more than 40 awards (among them many Audience Awards and even a Best Character Award
for the puppet Tereza with the jury explanation:
“For the voluminosity with which the character
is structured and the skill with which the animator was able to make it alive.”).
The last international recognition for Boles,
was the invitation from the Monstra festival
to present the scenery, props and puppets
at the Marionette Museum in Lisbon. The film
became alive again in another dimension. It is
with the quote from the exhibition catalogue
written by Fernando Galrito, that I will end this
introduction to the animation poetry of Špela
Čadež: “Art is always a way to see the world
and ourselves. Špela Čadež’ films offer a creative, sensitive and deep look over the human
relationships. About us and about others. And
the director knows how to perfectly use the
surrealistic and inventive capacities, that only
the art of animation makes possible.”
Igor Prassel
Director of ANIMATEKA
International Animated Film Festival, Slovenia
ταινία της Špela Čadež Mate to Measure,
design στο Academy of Media Arts στην

Anim’est international animation film festival is
the only international animation film festival in
Romania. Its main host is the city of Bucharest. Anim’est is celebrating its 10th edition
this October.
We started enthusiastically in 2006: in the first
edition we screened over 250 short films, 10
feature films and more than 3,500 spectators
attended the event. Last year we gathered an
audience of over 20,000 and screened around
350 short and feature films, remaining Bucharest’s most loved film festival.
From the second edition, Anim’est became a
competitive festival and year by year it joined
together animators, producers, animation
studios, film critics, famous names. It meant
a variety of films, more and more workshops,
presentations and round tables, children’s
screenings, live performances, a nice number
of international guests, plus the most famous
screening of each edition, the long awaited
Creepy Animation Night (inaugurated in 2009).
The Creepy Animation Night is an invitation
to explore the dark side of animation, in a
selection of bizarre, strange, unusual visual
improvisations, grotesque imagery, many of
them not selectable by other festivals precisely because of their extreme elements.
This short film programme is a travel into the
macabre, the bloody and the deeply bizarre,
a collection of stories, some of which you’ve
never dared to imagine. You are invited to
enter the atmosphere of a world dominated
by fear, terror and shadows. There’s no guarantee that you will be able to get out when the
show is over…
The dark side of animation is waiting for you!
Watch out!

Το Anim’est θα

του το comic book.
Canadian cartoonist Seth, best known for comic
books such as Palookaville, is one of the world’s
great storytellers in the form. In his personal
projects he transforms his poignant inner life into
observant and witty graphic stories. He is also incredibly prolific, producing semi-autobiographical
comics and award-winning commercial work, as
well as what he calls his “little hobbies.” Director
Luc Chamberland sheds light on his articulate
subject, mixing insightful biography with vivid animation in an artful fusion of filmmaking techniques
that perfectly captures Seth’s manifold creative
universe. In this deft portrait of one of our most
unique artists, Seth proves to be a wry and engaging narrator of his life story and artistic process.

Synopsis
The short film “Visual Symphony” is an experimental
animation based on musical
structures in order to visualize 2D and 3D graphics that
match what you hear and
what you see.
TRAVELING BACK: CHOIROKOITIA
My name is Elli Kyriakou and I
have completed a BA degree
in Multimedia and Graphic Arts
from the Cyprus University
of Technology. The short film
Visual Symphony is one of my
first experimental animation
films which is based on the
theory and research of the
theme “Visual Music”.
Synopsis
Time; time is an issue that
concerns me quite a bit
lately. Me and the whole
human race.
As I visited the ancient
site of Choirokoitia, I felt a
strange vibration through the
space. I had some kind of a
vision of how an inhabitant
of Choirokoitia would spent
his day in the same space I
came as a visitor. I was interested in the term of change;
What changed in this space
through the times and what
stayed the same?

Synopsis
In her own mind world, a
girl comes face to face with
the negativity inside of her
and finds the determination
needed to turn the source of
her negativity into the source
of her strength.
Synopsis
Inspired and driven by the
ideas expressed in the movie
“La Jetèe” by Chris Marker,
events that might have been
going on in the backstage of
the character shown in the
original film. If Chris Marker
is showing the literal actions,
and the reality of each situation through his film, then
this animation is showing
what is going on during the
time travel with a much more
abstract narrative.
Andreas Ioannou
Antreas is a recent graduate
from Cyprus University of
Technology, from which he
graduated with sppecialization
in Multimedia. His interests
include animation, film making, special effects and photography, among other things.
He is drawn to dark and
scifi themes, which he tries to
implement in his work. Believe
was created for his Bachelor’s
Thesis, and was presented in
two different versions, each
one with a different staging.
The animation had as its
purpose to look into the effect
that staging has to the viewer
as far as 3D digital animation
is concerned, and how the
story is understood differently
with different staging.
Synopsis

This is his first experimental

Synopsis
Time. A dimension in which
the spacial physical and tangible dimensions, according
to a human observer, exist
and change. The dimension
of time is characterised by
progression subsequent to
a one way direction. Test
subject XZ-42 thinks otherwise. With entanglement to
a past time point, XZ-42 is
finally able to desynchronize
from his timeline and dive
into a plane where past and
future are just as far as the
neighborhood’s convenience
store.
They say that love is the
greatest force in the universe, a force so powerful
that XZ-42 is willing to cross
his own timeline for. There
are, however, other forces
messing with the strings
of time.
This short animation is
inspired by the French film
“La Jetée” (1962).

This short animation is an
exploration and combination
of the three words Passion
– Burn – Time. The words
become characters of an old
film noir. Within a mystical
atmosphere, these words
are born and burned to send
us a secret: that Passion
Burns in Time.
Inspired from the old films
of the 20th century, this
one minute film deals with
nostalgic thoughts and lost
moments which dissolve our
passion(s) as time goes by.
*The film is covered with
the song of Billy Murray, a
famous American singer
from the ‘50s.

role in finding a concept and
visualization for each project
she undertakes. Looking forward to more creative motion
messages in the future.
The film describes the
everyday life of white-collar

demanding and monotonous. The film emphasizes
es the fact that even a very
patient person can get upset
and lose his tolerance when
people take advantage of
him.

L’ ASSASIN
The animation takes a deeper look into the events of La
Jetée, focusing on the man
who led the time-traveling
protagonist to his tragic end.
The assassin didn’t reveal
himself to the audience until
the very end, but what was
a killer doing hiding among
scientists, and what exactly
led to the termination of the
subject? Through the comic
panels of “L’Assassin” unfolds the truth behind the assassin’s actions, his ultimate
purpose and motivation, as
well as his view of the double
edged blade that is the word
“justice”.

Synopsis
A celluloid is projected onto
a cinema screen it is then
digitized, re-projected and
then re-manipulated. The
film plays with the application of digital and analog
amalgamation, the fragility
of image and sound within
the digital era and nostalgic
atmosphere of a dying
format. What distinguishes
the material from the sculpture, the canvas from the
painting the sound from the
symphony?
