QBS quilters pushed the barrier of the four-patch at the March 13, workshop. Billie Lauder demonstrated,
shared, and provided hands on assistance. We learned how to press in a Four-Patch Spiral. This is also known
as “Tweaking”. We didn’t stop at the four-patch, we sewed on and made them scrappy. Our machines hummed
along as we took our charm packs and made a “tube” and, with our rotary cutters, made a stack of “Scrappy”
four-patches. Within the first hour we heard comments from attendees that what they learned in the first hour
was well worth the price of admission. We had a full house; our 4 new workshop attendees and the many
seasoned QBS members filled the room with laughter, 4, 6, 9 and even 16 patches. With each new Billie Lauder
technique we marveled at what else we could do. Not only did we learn how to use “Layer Cake Fabric” we
shared birthday cake with the birthday girl of the day - our President, Sonia Das.

Community Baby Shower
May 20, 2010
Several years ago, Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske, a Registered Nurse Practitioner,
started the "Community Baby Shower" to provide a "basic going-home newborn kit" for lowincome mothers to use after they gave birth in our local hospitals. The "newborn kits" were
used by the Public Health Nurses as incentives to give to expectant mothers who completed
a pre-natal care and educational program. This ensures a healthier outcome for their pregnancy.
This will mark the third year in a row that QBS has participated in this Community Baby Shower. Our
donations have always been gratefully and enthusiastically received and the Guild is always personally
thanked and acknowledged at the event.
Please donate baby items for the “newborn kits”:
(sorry, no baby bottles as the Nurses are trying to encourage breast feeding)
Diapers
Diaper Bags
Baby Wipes
Bibs
Booties
Socks
PJs Or Gowns
Blankets

Please bring your donations to the Community Relations table at the QBS meeting on May 13, 2010.
Community Relations will deliver the donations to the Councilwoman’s office on the morning of May 14,
2010.

President’s Corner
Sonia Das
March was certainly a fun month thanks to Billie Lauder and her inspiring tips and tricks that
transformed the simplest of blocks into something sensational!
El Tigre
I would like to welcome, albeit belated, all of our New Members to Quilters by the Sea. I hope
that you have many years of fun and friendship with us. Please take workshops, come to Sew-So-Late, and help out
with Community Relations as well as participating in all of the Intraguild activities. Better yet, please consider
volunteering for a board position or helping out with a committee; it’s a quick and easy way to get to know the Guild
and your fellow quilters better!
I would like to thank Grace Boughner and Sandy Szladek for volunteering as Opportunity Quilt 2011 Co-Chairs. They
are finalizing designs for the new quilt and will need help from the membership in terms of fabric donations and block
construction. Please keep an eye for more information.
Vacant Positions
We are now down to one (1) vacant position! Please consider helping us out!
Parliamentarian
•
Makes sure we do things properly (according to the bylaws and standing rules) at general and board meetings
•
Chairs the Nominating Committee and helps find candidates to run for office
•
Conducts the election in September
•
Without a Parliamentarian, either the present board continues ad infinitum next year or the guild grinds to a halt
so QBS really needs a volunteer or volunteers in this position.
If you have questions or concerns, please call me at 562-429-4477 or email me at [email protected].
Looking forward to seeing all of you next month!

We had a great Community Relations workshop at the
Bunney Hutch on Sunday, March 14. We made several kits
with our newest pattern, Trip Around The Worm, which will
be available at the April guild meeting.
We now have fifty-four completed quilts and afghans, and
several completed tops and quilts needing only binding. Be
sure to check at the Community Relations table during the
next meeting to pick up a project.
Since we are inviting several Charities to our May
birthday guild meeting, please bring any completed quilts you
may have to our April meeting so we can have time to sort
them for distribution in May.
Our next Community Relations workshop at the Bunney
Hutch will be on Sunday, April 11, please come and join us.

Volunteering in Haiti - February 6 - 15
Tiana Melis
I was honored to have the opportunity to travel to Haiti to help with
medical relief in the aftermath of the January 12th earthquake. I am a
paramedic and I traveled with a team of twelve others from the Los
Angeles area that included two doctors, many nurses, a structural
engineer, and a Haitian-born pastor from Las Vegas. We brought with
us sixteen large suitcases containing medical supplies and muchneeded antibiotics. Our team flew to the Dominican Republic via Fort
Lauderdale, as the airport in Port au Prince was still not open to
commercial aircraft. After 48 hours of travel, we finally arrived at the
US embassy in Port au Prince, Haiti.
Driving through the streets of Port au Prince was a shock to say the
Picture from July, 2009
least. No amount of news coverage of the quake could have prepared me
Show and Tell
for what we saw. It seemed like every single building in the city was
damaged by the quake somehow. Entire neighborhoods were flattened. Children played
unsupervised in partially collapsed structures. As we approached the center of the city, we
saw the partially destroyed president's palace, and across the street we saw tent city. The
entire center of the city is occupied by families of Haitians displaced by the quake. Many live
in tents, and those who don't have tents (or bed sheets to string up on ropes) are sleeping in
the streets. The sick and hungry are everywhere. They come out in droves to throng those
who may be able to give them food or water.
We were picked up at the embassy by a bus to travel the short distance to the city of
Titanyen, where we would be working with a relief organization called Mission of Hope (MOH).
As we made the drive to MOH, we passed the mass graves in which countless numbers of
Haitians killed in the quake are buried. Most were buried without even being identified, and
families were left to assume that their missing family members were most likely dead.
A young man named Reuben escorted us on the bus to MOH. I began talking to him and
found out that he is a 23 year old pastor. I asked him where he was during the earthquake,
and he told me that he was in class at his Bible College with 67 fellow student pastors. When
the quake hit, the roof of the building collapsed. Reuben and his best friend were crushed.
When the roof fell, however, Reuben's friend fell on top of him, so that his body shielded
Reuben from some of the impact of the roof. Reuben's friend was killed instantly. For six
hours, Reuben was lying on the ground under the dead body of his friend and the crushing
weight of the roof. He told me that he struggled to breathe and came close to giving up.
Finally a stranger arrived and dug him out. Reuben was one of only twelve young pastors who
escaped with 56 of his friends dead in the rubble. Reuben's story is not unique. Every
Haitian I met on the trip had a story like Reuben's. They had lost their entire family or most
of their friends, their house and all their possessions.
Upon our arrival at Mission of Hope, my team was dispatched to set up mobile clinics in
the more remote mountainous areas surrounding Port au Prince. Many of these people, due
to lack of transportation, had not received medical care since the quake, and most had not
received regular medical care in at least six months.
As a paramedic, I was separated from my team and
assigned to work on the MOH ambulance, affectionately
called "Haiti One". There is no organized emergency
response system in Haiti, so most of the work I did
involved transporting critical patients between hospitals
so they could get the care they needed. The hospitals
and clinics surrounding Port au Prince are all small and
full to capacity. Each hospital has limited services they
can provide. MOH, for example, does not have an X-ray
machine. Many other clinics have x-ray machines but no

operating room. Patients would have to be shuttled to
another clinic for X-rays before surgery could be performed.
Many times this involved us waiting for hours with a
screaming child with a painful injury in the back of the hot
ambulance while we tried to beg a hospital or clinic to
perform an x-ray so the baby could have surgery. Often, in
order to persuade a hospital with no empty beds to take a
critical patient, we had to offer to take two or three patients
off their hands, whom we would return to MOH to their
already full makeshift hospital ward (housed in the school
building).
On Thursday, I had the privilege of joining my team to conduct a mobile clinic in a nearby
slum outside of Port au Prince. We saw a couple of emergency patients, but the majority of
people we saw were old, untreated earthquake wounds and illnesses like parasites, infections,
asthma, chronic bronchitis resulting from exposure to massive amounts of dust after the
quake, and diseases like Yellow Fever, Tuberculosis, Typhoid, and Malaria. Most people had
three or four things wrong with them at once. I worked in triage and we saw 224 patients in
one day. We ran out of supplies and antibiotics due to the general shortage. It was
heartbreaking to see the doctors have to decide who would get the antibiotics and which
would be sent home untreated. There were a number of children who were sick from eating
dirt or rocks because they were starving and didn't know better than to fill their tummies with
whatever was available.
My team treated over 650 people in their week of mobile clinics, and I was burdened as I
realized what a small drop in the bucket that was compared to the overwhelming need in Haiti
at this time. Medical care is scarce in Haiti at the best of times, and right now the shortage of
food and water, and cramped housing conditions, not to mention outstanding quake injuries
and infections, are causing problems over and above the "normal" need.
The last three days I was in Haiti, the president declared National Days of Prayer in
memorial to the one-month anniversary of the earthquake. The people of Haiti filled the
churches, and when there was no more room in the churches, they flooded the streets and an
outcry of prayer and song went up to the Lord.
Please pray for the people of Haiti. Pray that God would relieve their suffering, and ease
the pain in the hearts of those who have lost husbands and wives and children. This
rebuilding process is going to take many years. Haiti will
continue to need money and prayers and relief workers long
after the world has forgotten about this tragedy and moved on.
I have yet to fully process in my mind and heart all that God
taught me and opened my eyes to on this trip. I know that He
used our team in awesome ways, but I also know that we were
just a tiny cog in the wheel of relief and reconstruction that will
continue for many, many years. This is just the beginning for
Haiti. Hopefully it will be a new beginning for them.
Thank you all for your prayers.
