A message from...
President and Chief Executive Officer
Welcome to the 45th annual Northlands Farm and
Ranch Show and the beginning of another exciting
event season here at Northlands. This is my first experience in being involved in the Farm and Ranch Show,
and I am really looking forward to taking it all in.
As Canada’s oldest agricultural society (Northlands has been part of the community fabric for
132 years) we take great pride in being an urban
agricultural society. As we move forward, Northlands plans to take on an even larger agricultural
focus by developing and engaging the community through the creation of a sustainable culture that is a
foundation for business development, education and competition. Stay tuned,
because more about our commitment to and concentration on agriculture will be
announced in the future.
This year’s Northlands Farm and Ranch Show includes standbys like Enviro
Tech and Women in Agriculture, as well as some very interesting new areas like
Spraying for Profit, the Speckle Park Summit 3 Sale and several Equine Clinics.
Close to 400 exhibitors will be set up in the EXPO Centre showcasing trends in
the industry.
Saturday, April 2 is 4-H Day! All 4-H members can take advantage of free admission and will have the opportunity to take in a number of sessions related to
developing their skills in the agriculture industry such as marketing, photography,
grooming and fitting of both beef and equine animals. And, Northlands is extremely pleased to welcome to the 2011 Farm and Ranch Show – for the very first
time – the 4-H Provincial Communication Competition. Good luck to all of the
participants!
And don’t miss Canada’s up and coming rodeo stars. Taking place all three
nights in Hall D at the EXPO Centre is the Canadian National College Finals Rodeo (CNCFR). Featuring post-secondary education athletes from across Canada,
these young rodeo stars get the chance to shine and compete for national titles
in events like bull riding, pole bending, barrel racing, team roping, bareback and
saddle bronc – many of the same events fans watch at Canadian Finals Rodeo.
Enjoy the Show!

Anne Anderson
Our side of the story!
Hall B,
April 1st, 2:30 pm
Anne Anderson has spent all
of her professional life in the
business of Beef. "Anne is one
of the great innovative minds
of the beef industry and her
enthusiastic, can-do attitude
gets results." Most recently she
has accepted a position on the
Board of the National Cattleman’s Beef Association which
represents over 750,000 U.S.
producers. Her presentation on
the pressures activists put on industry, and industry’s response
will be insightful for farmers
and ranchers, and anyone in
the food production chain in
North America. Her presentation will address the unique
threat posed to agricultural
producers by the animal rights
and environmental activists, and
approaches to fighting back.
ATB Financial Hall
Conversation Corner,
March 31 at 2:30 p.m. This session will give you
information on how to transition a traditional farm to a
new model that relies on the
sun and the soil to raise farm
animals and not on the natural
gas normally used to heat a
barn. Over the past 15 years,
Big Coulee Farms has developed special holistic methods
and timing to pasture their animals in a whole management
model that is environmentally
friendly and yields healthy
product for its consumers.

Spraying for Profit
Chemical Applications Clinic
For anyone involved in today’s highly technical and
very mechanized agriculture industry, a sprayer is one of the most
frequently used and important pieces of equipment in today’s
operations. Northlands 2011 Farm and Ranch Show has brought
in industry experts to talk with you about the latest developments
to make spraying profitable, and to discuss some of the pitfalls to
watch out for this spring and summer.
The Show’s clinics will help both owners and sprayer operators
understand what the latest in technology, products and information can do to improve sprayer performance, productivity and operating economics. One of the other key aspects of spraying is the
safe handling and use of chemicals. We have that issue included
for you to discuss with our presenters, as well.
All the bases will be covered at Northlands Farm and Ranch this
year, and while the main focus of Spraying for Profit will be on crop
production, there will also be clinics for livestock producers.
The fundamental goals of spray application, coverage, droplet
measurement and technology will be front and centre for clinic
participants. Presenters will not only focus on droplet measurement but also on targets and size management through air induction technology and the air bubble jet nozzle. Spraying is an ever-evolving technology so patterns and droplet
size on various sprayers, improvements and nozzles will be discussed in detail.
Going green is a phrase we all hear and perhaps use nearly every
day now. It’s the latest wave in our industry, and we’ve brought in
an expert to talk about the rewards of going green when working
with sprayers, and this clinic will also look at intelligent application equipment and strategic advantages to going green.
Environmentally-controlled applications will also be discussed
by product specialists, who will focus their presentations on
the advantages of accurately and efficiently applying nutrients
and protectants for improved crop yield, while at the same time
reducing costs.
What about past, present and future trends in spraying?
Absolutely, we have that covered. Our presenters will focus on
chemical application through the eyes of the custom applicator
providing a synopsis of all three trends, including where we’re at
today and where this critical element of our industry is going in
the next five to 10 years. Managing environmental changes along
with new environmental regulations continue to affect the industry, and these important issues will be addressed in our Spraying
for Profit clinics.
For livestock producers, an integrated pasture management
plan to increase grass productivity is an important aspect of your
cattle operation. To reduce invasive plant, weed, brush and tree
encroachment, herbicide applications must be part of your plan
to stay ahead of those challenges while remaining productive and
profitable. Herbicide applications offer long-term, lasting results
that can be highly effective alternatives to other rejuvenation
methods such as mowing, cultivation and mechanical removal.
Presenters from Dow AgroSciences will give you an update and
plenty of ideas on the innovations that are helping western Canadian cattle producers improve their bottom line.
Taking in the Spraying for Profit clinics at Northlands 2011
Farm and Ranch Show is an excellent opportunity to learn about
the latest technology, products, services and procedures that will
maximize your investment in chemical application on your farm
or ranch.
NOTE: For anyone working toward obtaining a Pesticide Application Certificate make sure you catch Gary Moffatt’s Improving Sprayer Performance clinic taking place at 11 a.m. all three
mornings in Hall C at the EXPO Centre. Attendees will get a
complimentary credit in the concept area of application technology.
More information on what Pesticide Application Certificates
are available can be found at: http://environment.alberta.ca/01598.

The Business of Beef
A highlight of the Business of Beef focus at
Northlands Farm and
Ranch Show this year
is the Summit 3 Speckle Park Sale, where
Speckle Park cattle will
be on display for the
duration of the Show,
culminating with a sale
on Saturday, April 2nd.
If you’re looking for ways
to improve the efficiency
and profitability in your
beef operations, then Hall
B in the EXPO Centre is
where you’ll want to be on
Thursday, March 31st, Friday,
April 1st and Saturday April
2nd between 10 a.m. and 6
p.m.
22
You may be wondering who
or what are Speckle Park? Well,
first and foremost: Speckle Park
are Canadian! This amazing
breed had its beginnings in
Saskatchewan, and is only the
second breed of beef cattle in
Canada to be granted distinct
breed status. Both parts of the name,
Speckle and Park, refer to the
colour pattern. “Speckle” was
obvious because of the spots on
the rear quarters and over the
body; “Park” because some of
the breed display the white park
colour pattern of a white body
with coloured points about the
ears, eyes, muzzle, lower legs
and teats.
The colour patterns of
Speckle Park are distinctive and
certainly catch one’s eye. Their
merits as beef cattle will ensure
their sustainability as a distinct
breed.
The singular Speckle Park
also refers to the plural, so
whether a breeder or rancher has
one or a hundred head, they will
still have Speckle Park. And
the number of Speckle Park in
Northlands Farm & Ranch Show March 31 to April 2 , 2011
Canada, and internationally,
continues to increase.
For example, take the Six Star
Speckle Park Company. This
group of cattlemen, which includes Australian Greg Ebbeck,
has assembled the largest purebred Speckle Park herd in the
world with 350 cows.
Ebbeck first noticed this
unique breed at Northlands
Farmfair and has been keeping a close eye on it ever since.
Speckle Park was labeled an
evolving breed for 14 years, and
then when they obtained breed
status in 2006, Ebbeck and his
partners immediately bought a
few embryos.
Within a few short years,
Ebbeck’s purchased 2,000
Speckle Park embryos and has
45 breeders across Australia.
His enthusiasm about the breed
is so strong, Ebbeck created
the Speckle Park International
Association out of Australia
and the Australian purebreds
are on performance data at the
University of Armidale in New
South Wales.
Since Ebbeck started focusing
on Speckle Park, he’s won three
Australian carcass competitions
with calves. At the Brisbane,
Australia Royal Show earlier
this year he entered one Speckle
Park steer and won Grand
Champion Carcass against more
than 650 other head.
Jason Goodfellow from Six
Star Speckle Park Inc. (formerly
Notta Ranch) in Neilburg,
Saskatchewan, is one of three
consignors presenting the Summit 3 Speckle Park Sale at the
Northlands Farm and Ranch
Show. Goodfellow’s anticipating
a busy three days at Northlands
Farm and Ranch Show. As he
points out, Speckle Park is a
small breed competing in the
arena with all of the very well
established breeds, and they are
seeing the results of their investment and hard work being
crowned as grand champions
and reserve grand champions in
show after show.
The Northlands Farm and
Ranch show is extremely proud
to be hosting the Summit 3
Speckle Park Sale, with three
prominent Speckle Park breeders consigning a total of 30 head
to the sale along with embryo
lots.
You’ll want to consider arriving at the sale early, as a large
crowd is expected in Hall B, in
addition to the international
audience that will be watching
– and buying - online from several countries around the world
including the United States,
Australia, Brazil and Mexico.

Canadian National College Finals Rodeo
Sponsored by:
Saddling up for all the action
College cowboys and cowgirls are set to buck, rope,
and ride in the 2011 Canadian National College Finals Rodeo
(CNCFR) at Northlands’ Edmonton EXPO Centre on Thursday,
March 31st, Friday, April 1st and Saturday, April 2nd. As they
gear up for some intense competition, Lee MacMillan, a more
than two decades rodeo veteran, is working extra hard as a mentor
helping up and coming rodeo stars better develop their roping
and riding skills as well as their competitive spirit.
As the Equine and Rodeo Operations Manager for Lakeland
College, MacMillan spends a tremendous amount of time mentoring and encouraging young rodeo stars as they prepare to compete
for national titles. Not only do his student(s) benefit from his serious rodeo competition know-how and extensive experience, but
also his deeply engrained sense of sportsmanship.
MacMillan certainly has the savvy to help shape rodeo upand-comers. Born and raised on a cattle and horse ranch near
Vermilion, Alberta, MacMillan saddled up his own rodeo and
riding abilities at a very young age, competing in gymkhana
horse events and team penning when he was just eight years of
age. While actively involved in high school rodeo, he remembers
watching college students very closely as they competed in the
college finals rodeo events. He always knew he wanted in on the
action.
It didn’t take long for MacMillan to earn the Fall Classic Team
Roping championship in both 1998 and 1999. Among numerous
other rodeo honours, he also qualified for the Lakeland Rodeo Association Finals three times. Then, in 1999 and 2000 he qualified
for CNCFR (at that time it was known as Canadian Intercol-
legiate Rodeo) in team roping, his best event. “Team roping was
the easiest event for me to be involved in,” explains MacMillan,
“because I was always on horseback and roping at the ranch I
grew up on.”
As a mentor for upcoming CNCFR stars, MacMillan says his
teaching has more to do with ethics around the arena and rodeo
sportsmanship. “I’m not a classroom instructor, but a resource
for students.” He oversees participant needs, giving competitors
the opportunity to practise rodeo skills, encouraging them to
enjoy themselves in the heat of the action, but also disciplining
themselves to study.
What was the hardest thing MacMillan had to learn while moving up in his college finals rodeo days? “Not winning all the time
– and still being able to move on and stay competitive,” he says.
His advice for upcoming rodeo competitors is to “stay positive
and enjoy yourself. And be willing to listen to what others have to
offer as far as advice.”
CNCFR competitors from across Canada are busy honing
their championship skills for the national title competition. For
audiences, CNCFR always offers exciting action with 10 events
including Saddle Bronc Riding, Team Roping, Bull Riding, Steer
Wrestling, Pole Bending, Tie-Down Roping and plenty more.
It’s classic rodeo action steering the careers of the rodeo stars of
tomorrow.

Equine
clinics
everything from soup to nuts
Josh Nichol
Perhaps a better way to
write that headline would
be: everything from hoof
to poll! That’s what visitors to Northlands’ Farm
and Ranch Show will
experience, and learn from
equine experts, during
three days of clinics at
Edmonton’s EXPO Centre.
Sponsored by:
Of course, every clinic at the
NorthlandsFarm and Ranch Show is
worth attending, but if you only have
time for one or two then make sure
you consider the following two.
The first will be facilitated by Josh
Nichol, who’s earned a well-deserved
place as one of Canada’s top horsemen
because of his uncanny ability to get
to the root of a horse’s troubles. An
accomplished trainer and clinician,
Josh has been helping his students
overcome training difficulties and
achieve their goals for more than 10
years. Josh trains horses at his familyowned Eagle’s Wing Ranch located
just south of Athabasca, Alberta.
He also teaches numerous clinics
away from Eagle’s Wing Ranch,
which allows him to assist students
throughout western Canada and parts
of Ontario.
Josh grew up around horses and
later had the opportunity to study
under the tutelage of great horsemen
and horsewomen such as Deb Bennett, Harry Whitney and Richard
Caldwell. Since meeting his mentors, and spending invaluable time
with them learning about their
techniques, Josh has evolved into a
horseman who applies a thorough
understanding of equine language to
help advance relationships between
26
riders and their horses.
“Most training issues start
when brace within a horse is left
unchecked. When high performance expectations and a rider’s
own tension are added to the
mix, very often the horse struggles,” says Josh. “My ultimate
goal is to help every student be
fully aware of his or her horse,
understand themselves and then
move softly forward harmoniously.”
This year’s Northlands Farm
and Ranch Show’s also features
clinics facilitated by Dr. Jodie
Santarossa from Brightside Veterinary Services. Dr. Santarossa
will focus her discussions on
three key areas: unwrapping the
mystery (bandaging and wound
care), parasites and building better athletes.
“Nearly 99.9 per cent of
horse owners will go through
the experience, at some point,
of dealing with wrapping some
part of their horse’s leg,” Dr.
Santarossa explains. “It’s really
a matter of when they’re going
to have to do that, not if they’re
going to have to.
“The clinic on bandages will
look at ways to properly wrap
lacerations, how to prepare
the horse for veterinary treatment and shipping, and we’ll
look at ways to try and prevent
problems from occurring in the
first place.”
Parasites are a never-ending
challenge in caring for one’s
horse, and Dr. Santarossa will
discuss ways to better manage
that problem and address new
scientific findings. “At times, I
believe, we’ve under acknowledged and possibly over-treated
some equine parasites. We’ve
done the same thing to horses
as we’ve done with ourselves, as
humans, by over prescribing antibiotics, thus creating antibiotic
resistant superbugs. We’ve taken
the same approach with horses,
so in this clinic we’ll do some
assessing about parasites and
look at making changes where
necessary.”
Dr. Santarossa’s true passion in
working with horses is building
better athletes. “I really do love
this area of veterinary medicine, and I’m a firm believer in
that old adage of one ounce of
prevention is worth a pound of
cure.
“Intensive training can create
certain respiratory problems in
horses, and in some cases elite
athletes and their talents are,
perhaps, being wasted. So, in
this clinic we’ll look at ways
of ensuring these talented and
energetic athletes are not being
squandered.”
Northlands Farm and Ranch
Show’s equine clinics take place
in Halls A and D all three
days.
