The Heart Institute
The Heart Institute at Children’s Hospital Los
Angeles keeps hearts of all sizes beating strong.
For more than 80 years, experts at the hospital
have provided patients from around the world with
the most advanced, life-saving treatments available.
Ranked among the top in the nation for pediatric
cardiology and heart surgery by U.S. News &
World Report, the Institute provides children of all
ages—from the unborn to young adults—with
comprehensive care in a single location.
COMPLETE CARE IN ONE PLACE
Few hospitals can offer patients and families
what Children’s Hospital does—complete
cardiac care in one spacious, all-inclusive
location with the most practiced specialists
around. The hospital houses one of the largest
pediatric cardiac programs in the country with
45 dedicated inpatient beds, most of them in
private rooms. From clinics to surgery, heart
experts care for children in the new, 460,000square-foot Marion and John E. Anderson Pavilion.
Treatment is centralized on one floor, meaning
less stress for families, and ultimately, the best
care for kids.
At Children’s Hospital,
the focus of care is the
patient and family.
Children’s Hospital
Los Angeles has been a
leader in heart and lung
care since the 1930s.
JUST FOR KIDS
At Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, a team of
multidisciplinary pediatric heart specialists work
together to treat the hearts and lungs of children.
Longtime innovators in the field, experts at the
Institute treat simple to complex medical conditions
every day. Nearly 8,000 children are treated
at the Institute each year, with more than 900
undergoing cardiac surgery, making Children’s
Hospital one of the busiest cardiac centers in the
country. Commonly treated conditions include:
World-renowned experts at
Children’s Hospital provide
the precise care kids with
heart or lung disorders need.
•Cardiac arrhythmias
•Ebstein’s anomaly
•Kawasaki syndrome
•Tetralogy of Fallot
•Transposition of the great arteries
•Double switch for L transposition
•Total anomalous pulmonary venous return
•Single ventricle
•Valvular disease
The Institute
provides virtually
every advanced
treatment for all
heart disorders
and defects
affecting children.
LIVING WELL
Heart and lung surgeons at the Heart Institute follow
a rich tradition of innovative care in the field of
cardiothoracic surgery. In 1939, the hospital was
the first on the West Coast to perform pediatric heart
surgery. Using groundbreaking techniques, some
created at Children’s Hospital, specialized surgical
teams save the lives of children ranging from unborn
infants to young adults. The full-spectrum of services
includes evaluation, surgery and ongoing treatment
for a variety of conditions.
Single Ventricle Program
Physicians at the Heart Institute are specialists in
complex heart defects. At Children’s Hospital, the
Single Ventricle Program manages patients with this
condition, many of whom would not survive without
surgery. The Heart Institute provides patients and
families with a specialized team—including a
dedicated care manager who is available for
parent consultations between each surgery to
ensure patients get the best care available.
The Heart Institute at Children’s
Hospital Los Angeles is known as a
worldwide leader in the treatment of
congenital or acquired heart disease
and lung disorders in children.
Transplants
One of the few pediatric programs of its kind,
the Heart Transplant Program saves lives. The
heart transplant team has consistently had one
of the highest survival rates in the nation. Surgeons
at the hospital pioneered the living lobar transplant
technique, where critically ill patients in dire
need of transplant receive lung lobes from two
living donors.
CHANGING LIVES
Cardiologists at the Heart Institute also change lives
using noninvasive techniques, providing care for
children with heart or blood vessel problems that
may not require surgery. World-renowned experts at
Children’s Hospital provide the precise care kids with
heart or lung disorders need, offering expertise in
all major areas of cardiology.
Electrophysiology
The Cardiac Electrophysiology Program serves as a
referral center for patients in the western U.S. and in
Pacific Rim countries. Program experts use the latest
technologies to treat all types of heart rhythm disorders.
Pacemakers, implantable defibrillators, catheter
evaluation and treatment along with other advanced
therapies are offered.
Fetal Cardiology
Through the Fetal Cardiology Program, diagnosis
and care are provided for mothers and their unborn
children with heart defects. Specialists from the
Heart Institute and the Institute for Maternal-Fetal
Health at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles provide
care as a team. Program cardiologists have special
training and expertise in diagnosing and treating
heart disease in unborn children, using two- and
three-dimensional imaging to treat simple and
complex cases.
Heart Failure
Specialists at the Heart Institute treat patients with
the most severe heart conditions. Examined by a
team of experts, children seen for heart failure
are assessed for all medical and surgical options,
including routine and advanced medications,
corrective and palliative surgeries, advanced
pacemakers or the need for transplant.
Physicians at the Heart Institute
are specialists in complex
heart defects.
Hyperlipidemia
Consultation, diagnosis and management
services are provided for children with familial
hypercholesterolemia and other dyslipidemias
such as those associated with diabetes. Specialists
help guide lifestyle changes, including nutritional
counseling, weight control and exercise.
Interventional Cardiac Catheterization
Catheter-based treatment methods provide patients
with an alternative to surgery—which means less
recovery time for patients. A variety of procedures
are used to treat many heart conditions, painlessly
(through anesthesia) and without stitches or an
incision to heal.
Non-Invasive Imaging
Imaging helps diagnose and determine treatment
options for patients with heart disease. Children’s
Hospital Los Angeles provides:
Echocardiography
With one of the best labs in United States, the highly
skilled pediatric cardiac sonographers at Children’s
Hospital work with sophisticated digital equipment to
provide detailed, accurate imaging of even the most
complex heart defects.
The hospital houses
one of the largest
pediatric cardiac
programs in
the country.
Cardiac MRI
Without using radiation, advanced cardiac magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) provides detailed information
of both blood flow and cardiac function. Many current
worldwide uses of MRI were pioneered at Children’s
Hospital Los Angeles. In order to provide the best
experience for children and families, dedicated
pediatric anesthesiologists at the Heart Institute are
available, along with headphones and video games,
for children undergoing MRI.
CARE BY THE FIRST, AND THE BEST
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
The Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit was
the first of its kind on the West Coast, and
now provides room to treat 24 patients with
an adjacent 21-bed Cardiovascular Acute Unit.
Both state-of-the-art inpatient care areas are
staffed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists,
including intensivists, anesthesiologists, nurses,
respiratory therapists, Child Life specialists and
many other pediatric professionals. At Children’s
Hospital Los Angeles, the focus of care is the
patient and family. What’s more, patients and
families have access to a playroom and the
necessary support services needed to prepare
everyone for surgery.
Children’s Hospital Los Angeles has been a leader
in heart and lung care since the 1930s. Among the
milestones we have achieved, we are proud to have
been the first medical center to:
