Fireworks Over Lake Conroe. This year’s show will be amazing once
again as Celestial Displays and KSTAR radio team up for you to listen
to patriotic music while we light up the sky on Saturday, July 4. Some

information about the fireworks.
I would like to close in saying a fond farewell to Karen Hoylman who
is stepping down as the President and CEO of The Woodlands Area
Chamber of Commerce. Karen is retiring to start the next phase of
her life but not after 20 plus years of service to our county and The
Woodlands. She was very active in many other organizations within her
community. She personally served on my Board of Directors when I was
with Education for Tomorrow Alliance and we also served together on
Leadership Montgomery County’s board as well. Just a few weeks ago,
Karen was honored as LMC’s Woman of Distinction through Montgomery
County Women’s Council of Organization. On behalf of your friends
here in Conroe, congratulations on such a successful career in making The
Woodlands a better place to work and live. Karen, we wish you all the best
in your next phase of your life.

Culinary Cuisine at
the Annual Tastefest
More than 1,000 guests brought
their appetite to sample some local
culinary delights from H-E-B as well
as other area restaurants, wineries,
breweries and caterers at the Conroe/
Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce’s
Tastefest May 14 at the Lone Star
Convention Center.
“The event was a grand slam for the
Chamber and the community. It was
an amazing event showcasing our
members and local high school students in the culinary arts as well as
helped local charities and people in need,” said Scott Harper, president of
the Chamber. “This event would not be possible without the support of our
sponsors like H-E-B and many volunteers.”

Again this year was a food drive supporting the Montgomery County
Food Bank where attendees could bring a canned food donation to the
event. They got to drop their business card in to win a prize provided by
the Food Bank.
The Conroe ISD’s Culinary Arts students were on hand to showcase their
young talents at the event. The Culinary Arts program is offered through
Career & Technical Education and is located at Conroe High School. The
program is open to students from all six Conroe ISD high schools. In the
Culinary Arts program, students develop skills in preparing sauces, soups/
stocks, sautéing and frying, garnishing, grilling, baking pastries, desserts,
and breads. They also learn about equipment and technology, culinary
nutrition, creating menus, recipe conversion, cost control techniques and
the plating and presentation of food.
Leadership Montgomery County Class of 2015 also was a big feature at
the event by overseeing food recovery. The class recovered 381 pounds of
food and 11 pounds of beverages
at the event from the food vendors.
They were able to distribute the
food to the Salvation Army and
Heaven’s Army & Angel Reach.

Relieving Traffic Congestion in Montgomery County
House Bill 2213:
Our County is one of the fastest growing areas in our state. Along with
growth comes increased traffic. There are over 200 registered tow truck
companies registered within the county and it is not uncommon for 20 or
more tow trucks to show up on the scene of an accident, which is why I
authored HB 2213. This bill will help curtail the traffic jam when there is
a car accident on our roadways by decreasing the mass of tow trucks that
arrive on the scene of an accident by allowing the Montgomery County
Sheriff 's office to maintain a tow rotation list in the unincorporated areas,
if they so choose. This will ensure that when there is a car accident, there
will not be an influx of tow trucks on the side of the road drawing chips out
of a hat to see who gets the job. The passage of HB 2213 will provide the
county with the flexibility to ensure public safety, and it is now on Governor
Abbott's desk awaiting his signature.
Texas Beekeeping Industry
House Bill 3764 and Senate Bill 1766:
In recent years, Texas has seen unparalleled growth in small scale and
hobby beekeepers which has been extremely positive for honey bees and
for the Texas Beekeeping Industry. I authored HB 3764 which passed in
the House as its identical companion, Senate Bill 1766. This bill will reduce
regulations for small scale beekeepers by allowing them to sell honey
without requiring a commercial kitchen, and provides an exemption from
the Department of State Health Services licensing requirements. Individuals
who own and manage their own hives entirely by themselves or with the
help of immediate family members could sell up to 2,500 lbs. of their honey
directly to consumers at their home, farmers markets, or at municipal,
county, or nonprofit events. This bill is on Governor Abbott's desk awaiting
his signature.
Guardianship Bill
House Bill 634:
I feel it is important that we protect the rights of legal guardians throughout
the state. I authored HB 634, which passed on third reading in the House
on May 8th, that will ensure legal guardians of a ward in the criminal justice
system their visitation rights. This legislation will also allow the guardian
the ability to request defense and to provide the necessary documents.
Thank you, Judge Laird, for coming to testify in support of this bill. HB 634
is now waiting to come before the Senate floor for debate.

Q&A
Q.Why are you in business?
A. My parents are the reason I’m in business.
They taught me, through example, a very
strong work ethic. At 12 years of age my paper
route earned 45 cents per customer per week.
At 15 I was in a paint store, working in the
warehouse and I learned during those early
years that working was the way to take care
of myself and later on my family. Forty years
ago I purchased my first company in Houston
and after growing the business for thirty years
retirement sounded good so I turned control
of the company over to my sons. Something
my father said to me made me realize I wasn’t
ready to hang it up, he said “son, don’t ever
retire, working is who and what you are and if
you aren’t productive you are nothing”. At the
time, I realized a lot of my income was going
to pay for storage units so my daughter-inlaw located several available properties in the
April Sound area, where I lived at the time,
that were for sale and I purchased the 32 acres
where Storage 105 sits today. The same 32
acres happened to be the same property my
children played on as they were growing up
in Lake Forest Falls. That was a little over ten
years ago.
Q. Why are you in this type of business?
A. There was a great need in the Lake Conroe
area for secure, well maintained and affordable
accommodations for boats as well as other
belongings at the time I purchased the 32
acre tract. It was my vision that people would
want an air conditioned unit with a bathroom
for their boat and/or RV when they came off
the lake or returned from a long trip. The
seventeen 25’ X 60’ units were instead rented
by several upstart businesses who either didn’t
need storefronts or who couldn’t afford high
rent while starting a new business. I’m very

proud of the fact I’ve inadvertently helped
a lot of the people get started in their own
businesses over the years and it was a blessing
in that no one ever rented one for a boat or
RV. Storage 105 is home to several businesses
today.
Q. What is your background?
A. Ohio State is where my Industrial
Engineering degree was earned. I’ve obtained
several patents concerning electric heat
transfer for my Houston company, Gaumer.
The heating equipment is used in various
industries around the world.
Q. How long have you been in business?
A. Storage 105 began over ten years ago and is
now the second largest storage facility in The
State of Texas with over 1200 units. Behind
Storage 105 is Poplar Business Park, off Old
Hwy 105 on Poplar Circle. The business park
began three years ago and is home to the Lone
Star Honor Flight which consists of WWII
and Korean veterans who started gathering at
Storage 105 during the flights sponsored by
Montgomery County citizens and businesses
for the Greatest Generation to visit their
memorial in Washington, D.C.
Q. How did you get the background and
skills necessary to run this type of business?
A. Though I had no knowledge of the storage
business, other than being a customer, I’ve
been able to build a profitable business that
satisfies a need in the community and a space
for the area veterans to gather each week. I’m
living proof that you are never too old to learn
new skills.
Q. How has technology, such as computers
and the internet, impacted on how you
conduct business?
A. When you are trying to track occupancy,
vacancy and maintenance of over 1200 units
the computer system really comes in handy
and takes care of something that could be a
nightmare. Our system also allows us to keep
track of customer information and billings.
Q. What is the need that your business exists
to satisfy?
A. There are a lot of boats in our community
as well as RV’s and due to HOA rules they are
not allowed in driveways so most people need
a place to keep them secure. When people
sell their homes, excess furniture needs to be
placed somewhere while the house is “staged”
for sale. New people who move to the area
from the north need someplace to keep all the
excess that used to be stored in basements.
There are several reasons and stories that bring
people to Storage 105. All are welcome and
most have been with us for years.
Q. How does your company differentiate
itself?
A. One hundred and twenty feet above Storage
105 is the top of our flag pole that holds a 30’ X
60’, 100 lb, lightweight nylon United States flag
that is replaced every 6 months. During that 6
month period the flag is repaired seven or eight
times due to wind and rain damage. The flag
pole contains information for each veteran to
whom the flags have been dedicated. Another
thing people notice about Storage 105 would
be the vast array of statues. Many people stop
by just to have their picture made with the
Statue of Liberty, pink pig or buffalo to name a
few. Our mail store is a convenience that has
daily pickup by all the major carriers as well
as the USPS. We have over 300 mailboxes for
community convenience.

City of Conroe Employees Give Back
to Community

Each year The City of
Conroe accepts applications
from employees to
participate in a unique cross
training learning initiative
known as Conroe 360. A
select few applicants are
chosen to comprise each
year’s class. Conroe 360
establishes a curriculum
consisting of monthly
meetings wherein various
key departments within the
city present an overview
of their department and
the specific jobs they
complete and how that
work supplements the
collective services offered
to the citizens of Conroe
by the city. In addition
to the monthly meetings,
each class is charged with
coming together as a group
to establish a legacy service
project that benefits the
City of Conroe. Now in its
second year and boasting a
current class membership of
22, the Conroe 360 Class of 2015 has chosen as
its project 360 Trees from Conroe 360.
A total of 260 trees, a mixture of Loblolly
Pines and Shumard Oaks, will be planted on
the currently vacant medians at South Loop
336 and I-45. Two of the medians are on
the east side of I-45 and the remaining two
are on the west side in front of former Camp
Strake, now known as Grand Central Park.
100 hundred additional trees will be on hand
to use as needed, if not along the prescribed
plant site then at other sites of need within
the city. Project Manager, Amber Blevins, has
expertly orchestrated the implementation of
the class project plan with the incomparable
contributions and assistance of several of her
Conroe 360 classmates. Without the dedicated
hard work and practical knowledge of Tommy
Woolley, Les McKay, and Joel Pickering, this
project would not be possible. While every
member of the class served on committees for
the project, this core group of four brought the
project forward from a plan into fruition.
In partnership with and through generous
donations from several local businesses, 360
Trees from Conroe 360 is nearing completion.
Burditt Consultants donated the landscaping
and irrigation plans to ensure that the trees
enhance the area and give the medians a feel of
an urban forest. Hunter Industries donated a
large portion of the irrigation materials to make
sure our investment in trees is protected with
adequate care. The City of Conroe Public Works
Department has been instrumental in laying
taps and getting the water to the medians.
Finally, Sergio Martinez and Sergio’s Lawn
Service and Landscaping has been contracted to
install the drip irrigation system needed to keep
the trees alive. Upon completion of the drip
irrigation systems, Conroe 360 class members
will convene on the medians for two plant days
– one for the east side medians and one for the
west side. The project will be complete once the
class has mulched each tree.
It is the sincere hope of the Conroe 360 Class
of 2015 that in executing our class project, 360
Trees from Conroe 360, we adequately express
our appreciation for our great city and her
citizens and genuinely increase the quality of
life in Conroe, Texas.
