NJ LEGISLATIVE REDISTRICTING OVERVIEW On April 3, 2011, the New Jersey Legislative District Map based on the 2010 Census was adopted. The newly drawn districts reflect changing demographics within the State providing the basis for legislative representation over the next ten years. Population migrations and ethnic diversity influenced many of the decisions, revealing the rich tapestry of the State. On the subsequent pages is a detailed overview of the changes in each district including municipal changes, current representatives and differences resulting from the redistricting. Below are a few highlights from the redistricting process: Major Changes Some of the major district changes include the 30th LD now encompassing sections of Monmouth County’s shore municipalities. The 12th LD stretches from Raritan Bay to Fort Dix. New Jersey’s largest cities, Newark and Jersey City are no longer divided between three LDs but consolidated within two LDs. While many of the South Jersey districts reflect the growing population in southern portions of the State. LD 28 Newark Competitive Districts The redistricting also created some additional competitive districts within the State. The two eliciting the most interest from both parties are the 11th LD located mainly in Monmouth County and the 38th in Bergen County. LD 29 Incumbents with New Constituencies As a result of the new map a number of incumbents are facing radically altered districts with many new constituents. Those Legislators include Senator Bateman (R) in the 16th LD, Senator Doherty (R) in the 23rd LD and Senator Codey (D) in the 27th LD. Retirements A numbers of Legislators, after many years of service to the State, chose this time to retire from public service. Announced retirements include: Senator Ciesla (R) in the 16th LD, Senator Girgenti (D) in the 35th LD, Assemblyman Conners (D) in the 7th LD and Assemblwoman Quigley in the 32nd LD.
