I am a single mom with three kids, and I do everything by myself, and I need help. Economy, falling on hard times. I got custody of my kids, who are deaf. Because I need help for my family. To help my children have a happy Christmas. I was hurt last February, and have been out of work. For gifts; I can barely pay the bills. Single mother due to domestic violence; father left country. I am a single parent, and with food and utility bills. I have a large family need assistance annual report 2012–2013 just cannot afford struggle with the holidays I am on disability and Christmas. I am a single mother with limited means, and , so any help is greatly appreciated. , which is a fixed income and not enough to hardly pay bills, let alone buy extra food and xmas presents for kids. , and I don’t have money. and I cannot afford gifts for my children. We lost our house. I live in an apartment, my last year and I , while my husband works two part time jobs. I am a single mother with a special needs child. Loss of husband’s job; . I am a single working mother of three. Living on a low income, that an organization like this has to offer. We are so thankful for the community assistance. I am guardian of my grandkids, and I have disability and a limited income. , and they don’t judge you or put you down. Very, very helpful. for my children. I am a single mother with a . I have very little to help us both out now. there are two disabled people in the home, father is 79, ill nephew came to live with us; he lost both his parents, we have custody. to organizations that extend help to families when times are hard. It’s a hard year domestic violence shelter had to quit my job I am in a son got sick hopefully I will be on the other end next year to help others struggle and need all the extra help They are very helpful I don’t have enough money special needs child I need some help this year for my four-year-old son; Times are tough; I am very grateful It is a blessing, and I know the day will come when I can give back and bless a family as I have been blessed. F president’s annual report W e were blessed with a very good year in 2013. Interfaith was able to meet the substantial needs of its clients and meet all financial obligations. The Agency produced a positive cash flow from operations that helped replace the roof at our office. All of this is possible because of all our supporters, all our volunteers and all our employees. Thank you for your excellent work. We are privileged to be able to carry on what others have started and nurtured. We look forward to the coming year and are hopeful that we can meet the challenges that will come our way. Our staff and teams of dedicated volunteers provide an impressive variety of programs to people who are struggling to make ends meet and to those who are suffering from wounds invisible to the rest of the world. This annual report outlines the amazing work that has been accomplished through Interfaith’s programs this past year. For almost seven decades Interfaith has been working to improve life for South Shore families and individuals. Our client-centered programs are focused on hunger, mental health and emergency assistance. Interfaith’s staff and volunteers work side by side every day to transform our offices into a refuge for our neighbors in need. This work is made possible because of you. Teams of volunteers, donors and community partners help to deliver compassionate, client-centered programs focused on hunger, mental health and emergency assistance. Services include: X The Pantry Shelf: one of Greater Boston’s largest food pantries X Homesafe: budget counseling, homelessness prevention, rent and utility assistance X Learning Pantry: life skills education for food pantry clients X Harvest Helpers: community gardening to support food pantries X Career Closet: free professional attire for low-income job seekers X Special Holiday Initiatives: brightening the lives of families served through our food pantry F pantry shelf 18,141 hungry individuals fed through the Pantry Shelf food program 591,051 pounds of food distributed by Interfaith’s amazing volunteers F special holiday initiatives 300 Easter baskets distributed to the children of food pantry clients 450 children received backpacks filled with school supplies 300+ children received new and gently used Halloween costumes 800+ households received Thanksgiving meal baskets 600+ children received Christmas gifts F William, with his mom Renee, was thrilled to find a racecar driver costume when he visited the food pantry this October. Programs include: X The New Directions Counseling Center: mental health counseling for adults, children, couples, and families X The Bureau Drawer Thrift Shop: operated entirely by volunteers with all sales benefiting Interfaith’s programs homesafe 461 families were able to remain in their homes or avoid the loss of a basic utility 1,073 people served by the HomeSafe program 493 households received budget counseling F new directions counseling center 3,203 number of calls for assistance received by our counseling center 1,957 counseling hours logged by our caring counselors 2,100 visits with grieving families and suffering patients at Quincy Medical Center F bureau drawer thrift shop and career closet $55,427 collected via the Thrift Shop to support Interfaith’s programs 6,137 shoppers at the Bureau Drawer Thrift Shop Left: Cindy Lee, Sarah Paramore, Wafa Lavelle, Kate Lally are a few of the amazing Thrift Shop Volunteers. Since 1974, Interfaith’s walkathon has generated funding and awareness about poverty on the South Shore. The 2013 Walk also helped to raise funds for families affected by the Marathon bombing. Walkers raised over $18,000 for Interfaith’s crucial programs and for The One Fund–Boston. This year’s walk will be held on Saturday April 26, 2014. Koch, the city’s Annual Prayer Breakfast was held on Thursday, May 2, 2013. Almost 300 attendees packed The Tirrell Room in Quincy to hear speakers and faith leaders address the theme of ‘Living our Faith.’ Proceeds from the event benefited both Interfaith Social Services and The Esther R. Sanger Center for Compassion/Quincy Crisis Center. The 2014 Breakfast will be held on Thursday May 1, 2014. At right, Mayor Thomas P. Koch is flanked by program participants from the 2013 Quincy Prayer Breakfast. The program featured faith leaders and members from dozens of local denominations. 4 y interfaith social services annual report 2012-2013 took part in our 2013 events! feed the hungry gala in december F O n December 5, 2013 Interfaith’s sixteenth annual Feed the Hungry Gala raised a record-setting $135,000 to support South Shore residents in need of food, counseling, housing and other basic necessities. Gala attendees enjoyed carnival-themed games, auctions, an illusionist and delicious food prepared by Celebrity chefs from Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse, Alma Nove, Burtons Grill, Michael Aprea Catering, Steel & Rye and Union Fish Seafood and Raw Bar. Guests also enjoyed a vodka tasting by KEEL Vodka and a whiskey tasting by 2Gingers. This year’s Gala will be held on Friday December 5, 2014. Some of the Gala planning committee members. The 2013 Hero of the Year awardees were Cindy Lee and Ed Kelley. From distributing gifts for children at Christmas time to mopping up leaking ceilings, Cindy and Ed personify “community hero.” Cindy volunteers as the manager of Interfaith’s Bureau Drawer Thrift Shop. She started as a food pantry volunteer in 1996. Over the years she has served on many event planning committees, coordinated indoor yard sales, worked as the front desk receptionist, Career Closet volunteer and Help for the Holidays volunteer. Cindy currently serves as the secretary of Interfaith’s board of directors; she leads by example Executive Director Rick Doane and is a friend to all. with Cindy Lee and Ed Kelley. Ed started volunteering at Interfaith ten years ago. He works as a statistician in food pantry and volunteers in the thrift shop by personally disposing of all the donated clothing which is not suitable for resale. On Tuesday evenings Ed serves all of Interfaith’s food pantry clients who cannot come to the pantry during regular hours. He has a kind word and welcoming smile for all who come through Interfaith’s doors. Past Community Hero award recipients include: Paula Lombardo, Beverly Tangvik, Thomas F. Volunteers are the heart and soul of Interfaith Social Services. They distribute food, sort clothing, answer telephones, plan fundraisers and perform many other duties. These volunteers personify Interfaith’s conviction that the best way to help our neighbors in need is by mobilizing members of their own community who compassionately provide the help that is needed.
