Interfaith Social Services 2013 Annual Report
I am a single mom with three kids, and I do everything by myself, and
I need help. Economy, falling on hard times. I got custody
of my kids, who are deaf. Because I need help for my family. To help
my children have a happy Christmas. I was hurt last February, and
have been out of work. For gifts; I can barely pay the bills. Single
mother due to domestic violence; father left country. I am a single parent, and
with
food and utility bills. I have a large family

e were blessed with a very good year in 2013. Interfaith was able
to meet the substantial needs of its clients and meet all financial
obligations. The Agency produced a positive cash flow from operations that helped replace the roof at our office. All of this is possible because
of all our supporters, all our volunteers and all our employees. Thank you
for your excellent work. We are privileged to be able to carry on what others
have started and nurtured. We look forward to the coming year and are hopeful that we can meet the challenges that will come our way.

F executive director’s annual report
I
nterfaith Social Services is a dynamic and unique organization. Our staff
and teams of dedicated volunteers provide an impressive variety of programs to people who are struggling to make ends meet and to those who
are suffering from wounds invisible to the rest of the world. This annual
report outlines the amazing work that has been accomplished through Interfaith’s programs this past year.
For almost seven decades Interfaith has been working to improve life
for South Shore families and individuals. Our client-centered programs are
focused on hunger, mental health and emergency assistance.
Interfaith’s staff and volunteers work side by side every day to transform
our offices into a refuge for our neighbors in need. This work is made possible because of you. The incredible support we receive from our friends and
the community have allowed us to serve so many thousands of people this
past year. On behalf of our clients, thank you.
Sincerely,
Rick Doane
Executive Director, Interfaith Social Services
about the cover F Our annual report cover features quotes from our
food pantry clients. They recorded them when they were registering to receive
assistance through our Help for the Holidays program. These are their own
words. Some grammatical mistakes were corrected, but otherwise their quotes
have not been altered. They are our neighbors, colleagues and friends. We are so
grateful that because of support from donors like you we are here to help them.

south shore walk in april F
L
ess than a week after the devastating tragedy in Boston, over 300 local
residents participated in Interfaith Social Services’ South Shore Walk on
April 20, 2013. Since 1974, Interfaith’s walkathon has generated funding
and awareness about poverty on the South Shore. The 2013 Walk also helped to
raise funds for families affected by the Marathon bombing. Walkers raised over
$18,000 for Interfaith’s crucial programs and for The One Fund–Boston. This
year’s walk will be held on Saturday April 26, 2014.
Top left: Carol Courage, Dolly Colella and Wafa Lavelle distribute T-shirts. Each year dozens of volunteers work very hard to create a fun
and inviting atmosphere for all of our Walkers. Lower left: Chris and Jeff Weissensee of Cohasset and their kids Thomas and Ben showed
their community spirit. Above: Stephanie and Isreal Cuba of Arlington with sons Joaquin and Gabi participating in the Walk.

community heroes of the year honored at gala F
E
ach year at the Feed The Hungry Gala, Interfaith Social Services presents a
Community Hero of the Year Award to an individual or individuals who inspire
others through selfless service. The 2013 Hero of the Year awardees were Cindy
Lee and Ed Kelley. From distributing gifts for children at Christmas time to mopping
up leaking ceilings, Cindy and Ed personify “community hero.”
Cindy volunteers as the manager of Interfaith’s Bureau Drawer Thrift Shop. She
started as a food pantry volunteer in 1996. Over the years she has served on many
event planning committees, coordinated indoor yard sales, worked as the front desk
receptionist, Career Closet volunteer and Help for the Holidays volunteer. Cindy currently serves as the secretary of Interfaith’s board of directors; she leads by example
Executive Director Rick Doane
and is a friend to all.
with Cindy Lee and Ed Kelley.
Ed started volunteering at Interfaith ten years ago. He works as a statistician in
food pantry and volunteers in the thrift shop by personally disposing of all the donated clothing which is not suitable for
resale. On Tuesday evenings Ed serves all of Interfaith’s food pantry clients who cannot come to the pantry during regular
hours. He has a kind word and welcoming smile for all who come through Interfaith’s doors.
Past Community Hero award recipients include: Paula Lombardo, Beverly Tangvik, Thomas F. Williams, Esq., Kris
Larsen, Matti Lang, Jan Stewart, Mary Ann Walsh, Robert F. Taylor, Margaret Davidson and Andrew Scheele.

Our volunteers
The heart and soul of Interfaith
I
n 2013 volunteers donated 22,245 hours of service assisting Interfaith’s clients. Volunteers are the heart and soul
of Interfaith Social Services. They distribute food, sort
clothing, answer telephones, plan fundraisers and perform
many other duties. These volunteers personify Interfaith’s
conviction that the best way to help our neighbors in need is
by mobilizing members of their own community who compassionately provide the help that is needed. Thank you to
these volunteers who contributed to our mission in 2013.
