***For What It’s Worth*** Janice Nelson, Editor July 22nd, 2016 Editor’s Comment So, how many of you attended the Alpine Lake Music Festival held on July 9th? I did, for the first time, and I was very impressed! The weather, thank goodness, was just perfect! Several great food and craft vendors participated to round off the event. And the highlight of the day, of course, was the musical performers! A great time was had by all in attendance. A big “THANK YOU” to Linette Sines and John Corbin for all their hard work and advance preparation to make it all come together. I understand this year’s festival broke an alltime sales record. Good job to all involved! Summer is moving along quickly and so are the events for the Alpine Lake Learning Program. The next happening is a trip/tour to the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum and afterwards, a lunch at the Stonewall Resort. Also scheduled for August 2nd is a performance, right here at the Lake, by the group Aurora Celtic. Make sure to read all about these two programs, and others listed, at the end of this publication or on our website. Alpine Lake’s Annual Yard Sale is almost upon us. I know much help will be needed to make it a success. You can obtain more information about the Yard Sale in the Property Owners Committee report. At this time I would like to wish Helen Wylie a Happy Birthday. Helen celebrates her special day on July 29th. Happy Birthday, Helen! That’s it for now. Stay cool this weekend. Takeout orders will be available! 1 HAPPENINGS AROUND THE LAKE & NEARBY… FUN FIT EXERCISE GROUP by Sue Thompson You know I love ya, but after a nine year run I must inform you of the wind-up of Fun Fit Exercise classes. The last class will be held on Friday, August 19th, which allows me to honor my commitments to individual participants, and gives everyone ample opportunity to collect their weights, exercise mats, and stability balls. Circumstances change, making liability and insurance questions an important factor for consideration. The amount of time it takes to maintain our residence here at Alpine has increased. We are, after all, “over 21” and need to take more breaks. “Arthur-Rightis” pays more frequent visits and stays longer. We recently made the decision to put our home on the market and look for a one-story house, closer to family. With all these concerns in play, it just seems like it’s the right time to retire. I will always treasure the relationships formed while our group exercised. We became supportive friends, who enjoyed meeting for coffee after class, playing golf or shuffleboard, and volunteering together on Alpine committees. My hope is that class members will get involved in other fitness activities: water aerobics, kayaking, fitness room, walking . . . the list goes on. Find an interest you enjoy, have FUN and stay FIT! USED CLOTHING by Tom Kinsey Each fall I send a load of used clothes to a used clothing store in the Mayan village of San Miguel, Belize. It is run by a single mother of two daughters. I met her when on a trip with Marshall University students. Rather than being dependent on her parents, her dream was a used clothing store – from that trip several of us send used clothing from the United States. I am collecting cloths/shoes for my fall shipment. All should be practical (not dress-up) lightweight clothes. The people of the village are generally small in stature; so please no big men things. I will collect them (please call Tom Kinsey 412- 720-1037 or you can drop them off at my cabin (109 Betony Lane). Thank you. SWAP, SHOP & SHARE by Barbara Conway It’s time to finish cleaning out those closets! The Beautification Committee will be holding a clothing sale, one day only, on Friday, August 5th in the Allegheny Room. This sale is the same weekend as our Property Owners Yard Sale, to provide one-stop shopping for everyone! Set up is on Wednesday, August 3rd, so drop off your donations that day at the Allegheny Room. TERRA ALTA FOOD BANK There is an ongoing need to replenish supplies at our local food bank so please add your donations whenever you can to help this worthy cause. There is a box inside the front foyer of the Lodge for your convenience. Please continue to be generous in your giving. BLOOD MOBILE by Marilyn J. Metheny, Civic Club Coordinator (304) 789-6006 Our next drives are on July 28th and September 22nd, both Thursdays, and Wednesday, December 28th. All are at the Ambulance Hall from Noon ‘til 5:30pm. A new feature is for anyone wanting to do the sign-in with all the questions and print out the Fast Pass at home, they can log into the Red Cross website. This can save them about 10-15 minutes at the drive. We appreciate the support the Alpine folks have given us. 2 ALPINE LAKE LADIES DISCUSS CAMP HORSESHOE 4 KIDS by Norma Eckard Last summer a gracious group of Alpine Lake ladies took time to meet and discuss ways to interest and encourage our East Preston School students to consider Camp Horseshoe's camp offerings for their age group. For several years, since 2010 to be exact, Alpine Lake residents tried to recruit students from East Preston School to attend the Leadership Summit which offered two sessions, one for middle school students and one for high school, those students going into the 9th grade. Even though we were able to recruit one or two students each year, at times we had additional scholarship monies but no applicants. The lack of recruits may have been due to the turnover of administrators and counselors. These educators are necessary for the success of the program as well as assisting in recruitment. Also, absolutely necessary to the scholarship's success is the perseverance of an Alpine resident or someone to initiate the process by insuring that the students receive timely dates of camps offered by the Youth Leadership Association (YLA), earlier known as Camp Horseshoe. This past year, Kathy Andes, a resident of Alpine Lake, worked diligently to connect with the school and share information with the staff and students. Her efforts were successful as we received more applications than in earlier years. In looking back we see that even though we had problems with recruitment, 25 students applied for scholarships and attended Camp Horseshoe's offerings since 2010 when members of the greater Terra Alta community began to work together by providing scholarships. The Alpine Lake ladies are grateful to Judy Hay for creating the icon that will be used as a letterhead identifying the focus on Camp Horseshoe 4 Kids scholarships and to Barbara Conway for developing a draft of the mission statement. Please help to make it a success with your donations, volunteer help, and buying powers on August 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. We will be setting up on Wednesday and Thursday, so if you are able to help in any way, please sign up at the front desk/Lodge or call B&B (304-789-2443). Experience is not needed, so just roll up your sleeves. We'll need some trucks and muscle, too, for the larger items. All donations must arrive by Thursday 5pm (with suggested prices, if possible.) Remember, no clothing or computer items. There will be a Bake Sale associated with the Yard Sale and all proceeds will be given to the Terra Alta Food Pantry. Please sign up to donate a baked good or two and get it to us by Friday 8am. Again, please sign up or call so a schedule can be made. With everyone helping (and buying), we'll have another great fundraiser. There will be a joint Yard Sale/Oktoberfest meeting on Tuesday, July 26th at the Boathouse, starting at 7pm. Be there or be square! All ideas and suggestions are welcome. 5 ECC by Kurt Engel, Chair Here we are in mid-summer with numerous property owner projects underway at Alpine Lake. A few things should be kept in mind: 1. Permits ARE REQUIRED to cut down trees with a diameter of at least five (5) inches. 2. Now that summer has arrived, property owners are requested to ensure up to date property maintenance issues are ongoing (to limit invasive wildlife activity). 3. As the fall season approaches, homeowners with fireplaces should have their chimneys inspected and, if necessary, cleaned. 4. Through the end of October the ECC will continue to meet on Thursdays at 10am in our first floor office. 5. A hearty “thank you” to all Alpine property owners who have followed the permit request procedure. FROM MANAGEMENT & STAFF Linette Sines – Interim General Manager The weather forecast is absolutely beautiful for this weekend, with only a chance of rain on Sunday. There will be a Board Work Meeting on Saturday at 10am in the Rhododendron Room. These meetings are open to the membership. If you are looking for entertainment this weekend, there are several options. For those who love Rock, Shorthorns Saloon will host national recording artists, Trapt, on Friday evening. Opening acts start at 8pm. Tickets are $15 at the door. If Appalachian Jam Rock is your preference, Fletchers Grove will be playing a free concert at Wisp Resort on Friday evening from 6:30-9:30. Be sure to bring a lawn chair to enjoy the concert. Food & drinks will be available for purchase. If you enjoyed Surrender Dorothy at the Alpine Lake Music Festival, you have a chance to catch them again this Friday at the “Honi Honi Bar” at Deep Creek Lake from 4:30-7:30pm. The Masons will be returning to SEASONS Restaurant to entertain guests on Saturday, July 23rd, from 7-10pm. Stop by early to enjoy dinner before the music. The Alpine Lake Learning Program is proud to announce the Aurora Celtic concert on Tuesday, August 2nd at 7:30pm at the Boathouse. Admission is $10 at the door. Mark your calendars! There are private events at the boathouse on both Saturday the 23rd and Monday the 25th. There are no scheduled events for the beach pavilion, so anyone can enjoy that area over the weekend. The Preston County Sheriff’s Department is hosting a golf scramble here on Saturday, so tee times will be limited until after noon. The Terra Alta Civic Club is holding their annual Elders Luncheon at SEASONS on Saturday, in addition to feeding the Sheriff’s Department Golfers – so it will be a busy afternoon for them! I have a few reminders to pass along. Please do not open or use the sliding glass doors in the fitness area. These doors are for emergency use only, and are not meant to be used as an entrance or exit. The dumpsters located at the far end of the Lodge parking lot are not for private use. Please do not place your household trash in these dumpsters. If you are on a quarterly assessment payment plan, your second quarter payment is now due. After a re-election of officers, John Laing will serve as Vice President for the coming year and Ginger Tucker as Secretary. With this change in responsibilities, John and Ginger can better utilize their individual skills. The Board has happy/sad news to share: John Corbin has accepted a PR position collaborating with the state of Maryland and Garrett County. The ECC has recently received an increase in the number of reports of unkempt property. To avoid a notification from the ECC, please remember Section 8.A. (l) of the Declaration of Restrictions: All lots, whether occupied or unoccupied, and any improvements thereon shall be well maintained and no unattractive growth or accumulation of rubbish or debris shall be permitted. The Board has also gotten a number of questions and comments regarding fire pits. There seems to be some confusion about the use of recreational fires in our community. We have done some research and have incorporated our findings, including suggestions made by property owners through Community Chat, into a draft policy for fire pit use at Alpine Lake. The intent of this policy is to allow for responsible enjoyment of recreational fires, without putting our community at risk from wildfire damage. It is now in the hands of ECC and Compliance Committee members for their comments. Stories about the tools and strategies blind children use in their education and lives, and their accomplishments in our sighted world. Hands-on, simulated activities will enhance this experience for all. Participants will identify tools used by blind children who are developing literacy skills; will experience non-visual strategies for activities of daily living; and will gain an understanding of some of the unique challenges blind people face in a sighted world. Participants are asked to bring a sleep mask or blindfold. Speaker’s Background: Dr. Sheila Amato received her MA, Ed.M. in Instructional Practices in Special Education, and Ed.D. in Blindness/Visual Impairment from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. Current professional activities include being the President of the West Virginia Chapter of the Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind (WVAER), a member of the Test Development Team for the Braille Challenge sponsored by the Braille Institute of America, an adjunct instructor at West Virginia University where she teaches the Braille courses in Unified English Braille (UEB) and the Braille math codes, a test developer for the PRAXIS series of exams in special education, Deaf/Hearing Impaired and Blind/Low vision, the coordinator of the West Virginia Regional Braille Challenge, held at the WVSDB, which is in its 5th year of participation in this International event, and a member of the Board of Advisors for the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB). Instructor’s Background: Matt is a Culinary Institute of America (CIA) trained Chef. His CIA internship was at Oliver’s, a high end restaurant in Buffalo, New York. Over the years he has been Chef at several South Western PA restaurants, but he has spent most of his time as Executive Chef at the Century Inn in Scenery Hill, PA. At this historic inn, he features dishes that are period appropriate and are based on local sources. Robin and Dennis White, full time residents on Hemlock Circle, will share their experiences from their seven trips to Malawi, Africa. Learn how churches have joined together to form a Partnership of Hope, Ministry of Presence with the Malawi United Methodist Church.
