FALL 2015 - OSF HealthCare
FALL 2015 OUR BABY-FRIENDLY JOURNEY CONTINUES Since the last publication of Healthy for Life, the Birthing Center has made great strides in implementing the new guidelines and requirements to become designated as a Baby-Friendly hospital. Becoming a Baby-Friendly hospital will show our commitment to doing what is best for our patients. With a renewed focus on the importance of breastfeeding and keeping babies close to their moms, OSF St. Joseph Medical Center has adopted a new culture and approach to the neonatal process. One of the biggest changes in the process is the location where the babies receive their newborn screenings. In the past, babies were taken to the nursery, away from their mothers, to be examined. Now the pediatricians visit mom and baby in their own room. Changing the approach of newborn screenings better includes the parents and provides the least amount of stress possible on the babies by allowing them to “room in” with their moms. Parents now get as much time as possible with their infant to learn their newborn’s patterns before going home. “This better facilitates the parents’ transition to home by empowering them and providing the resources they need to care for their infant both during their stay and after discharge,” said Amanda Goff, Lactation Consultant at OSF St. Joseph. “Parents need the opportunity to learn their infant’s cues. Not separating baby and parents allows them to learn those cues quicker and become more confident in caring for their infant by the time they go home.” To help support the initiative of “rooming in,” OSF St. Joseph Foundation generously granted the Birthing Center funds to purchase the equipment needed by pediatricians in every room. W ELCO M E TO HEALTHY FOR LIFE! Other benefits of increasing the time moms and babies have together while in the hospital include an increased milk production for mom and being able to better identify early feeding cues. The Baby-Friendly emphasis on breastfeeding comes from evidence-based research showing multiple benefits for the baby and new mom. The babies benefit from breastfeeding as the milk helps their digestive system mature and work properly. It also helps to decrease the risk for certain types of infections and illnesses, obesity, allergies, and food sensitivities. Both mom and baby benefit from the special bond created by the frequent skin contact. Some of the mother’s health benefits include a decreased risk of multiple types of cancers, diabetes, anemia, and osteoporosis. Support and encouragement for exclusive breastfeeding continues throughout the entire stay at the hospital. Birthing Center nurses and Lactation Consultants received training on the new guidelines for our smallest patients. Should the baby need to return to the hospital for any reason, other departments have also been educated on Baby-Friendly procedures. “As a hospital, we are always trying to better serve our patients. Becoming designated as Baby-Friendly will allow us to continue to raise the bar and standard of care we can provide,” said Sarah Musselman, Lactation Consultant at OSF St. Joseph. OSF St. Joseph Medical Center is on schedule to become an accredited Baby-Friendly hospital by the fall of 2016. Healthy for Life | 3 The end of the 2014-2015 school year marked two years since OSF St. Joseph Medical Center sponsored the funding for Oakland Elementary and Benjamin Elementary Schools to implement Project Fit America (PFA) at their respective schools. As part of the grant given by OSF St. Joseph Medical Center and OSF Foundation, Oakland Elementary and Benjamin Elementary Schools received new outdoor and indoor equipment, teacher training sessions, and lesson plans and resources for physical education (PE) classes. Taking a proactive stand against childhood obesity, PFA works to teach lifelong fitness skills that encourage healthy living and an active lifestyle at an early age. 4 | Healthy for Life EXPANDING EDUCATION TO THE PL AYGROUND: PROJECT FIT AMERIC A Jo Myers, PE teacher at Benjamin Elementary, said, “Project Fit America has been a very positive addition to our existing curriculum. Our students are motivated by the lessons and the challenges this program offers. It is exciting to watch the students set goals, work to attain them, and then take such pride in themselves when these goals are met.” Students are motivated by the lessons and the challenges this program offers. The enhanced curriculum includes preand post-fitness tests over the course of two years. After the first year, Project Fit America helped create substantial improvements in cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, and endurance scores. The final two-year results are still being compiled, but we anticipate phenomenal further improvements. PE teacher at Oakland Elementary, Bethany Romer, said, “Project Fit America really motivated my students to work hard. When we implemented it into our curriculum, we had 100 percent participation! It was amazing to watch the students who struggled with enjoying PE and didn’t want to participate, find something they were good at and something they enjoyed.” Fellow PE teacher, Todd Delveaux, said, “Students have set goals for themselves. It has aided in the growth and self-esteem of many of our students here at Benjamin Elementary.” Due to the success of the program at Oakland and Benjamin, OSF St. Joseph Medical Center is excited to announce we will be donating approximately $30,000 worth of equipment, installation, and curriculum enhancement through Project Fit America to both Stevenson Elementary and Prairieland Elementary schools for Fall 2016. “I am excited for the self-motivation opportunities Project Fit America has created to inspire students to reach new fitness goals. The activities in the curriculum guide look like they are fun ways to encourage kids to keep moving,” said Jill Garneau, PE teacher at Prairieland Elementary. OSF St. Joseph and the OSF Foundation autonomously raised the combined grant of nearly $60,000. “OSF St. Joseph Medical Center and OSF Foundation sponsor and support many strategic health and wellness initiatives within our community,” said Greg Cook, chair of the foundation board. “One of the initiatives I am very fond of is the focus on the health and well-being of our children in schools. I am proud to support Project Fit America.” PROJECT FIT AMERICA Project Fit America (PFA) is a non-profit organization for elementary and middle schools to help create and foster healthy fitness education programs. With a goal to reverse the lack of fitness in youth, PFA approaches regular exercise with a whole body approach by addressing aspects such as self-esteem, understanding the body, and developing key character traits like leadership and teamwork. Their mission is to “get kids fit and to create programs that assure every child will find something at which they are good at and to inspire them to participate in more fitness activities. We create the opportunity for all kids, not just the already gifted athletes, to discover, explore, improve, and be recognized for their physical, mental, and fitness efforts and performance.” To learn more about Project Fit America visit projectfitamerica.org. RECOGNIZED FOR OUR QUALIT Y; AWARDED FOR OUR C ARE Learning about hospitals’ reviews, statistics, and quality of care is important and has never been easier. Researching this information allows individuals to make educated decisions on where to go and who to see for their care. Over the past year, OSF St. Joseph Medical Center has been re-awarded multiple prestigious recognitions and recognized by new organizations. Our motivation is to serve our patients and our awards prove our success in continual progress for perfection in quality of care, service, and safety. HEALTHGR ADES 2015 OUTSTANDING PATIENT EXPERIENCE AWARD OSF St. Joseph Medical Center received the HealthGrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ for the third consecutive year. This award distinguishes the top 15 percent of hospitals nationally as it was only awarded to 452 hospitals. OSF St. Joseph was one of only 17 recipients in Illinois. The award was based on how each hospital’s patients responded to the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey for visits occurring between January and December of 2013. GYNECOLOGIC SURGERY EXCELLENCE AWARD OSF St. Joseph Medical Center has been named one of a select group of hospitals – the top 10 percent of hospitals evaluated – identified as providing outstanding performance in gynecologic surgery, as measured by HealthGrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. OSF St. Joseph is the only hospital in McLean County to receive the recognition. CRYSTAL BALL The OSF St. Joseph Foundation 2015 Crystal Ball, hosted by co-chairs Greg Cook and Abby Walsh, is a black-tie signature event to benefit OSF St. Joseph Medical Center. This year’s Crystal Ball will be held Saturday, November 14 at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel and Conference Center in Bloomington. The evening will include live music from the Beatles Tribute band, The Cavern Beat, a beautifully prepared gourmet meal with appetizers, cocktails, and a live auction. “The 2015 Crystal Ball will not only be a fun event, but an important fundraiser for the Hybrid Operating Room,” said event co-chair Abby Walsh. The Hybrid OR, also known as the “operating room of the future,” will use innovative technology to shorten the length of a patient’s stay, combat infection, and improve recovery times. Proceeds from the 2015 Crystal Ball will support the purchase of medical imaging equipment for the Hybrid OR. “You won’t want to miss it!” said Abby. This one-of-a-kind event is open to the public. Healthy for Life | 7 MAKING THE INCONVENIENT A LIT TLE MORE CONVENIENT Not very many people get sick when it is convenient – if there even is such a thing. Between work, school, kids, and everything else going on, it is hard to schedule time to go to the doctor. With 24/7 online access to medical care, OSF OnCall can make the inconvenience of an illness a little easier to manage. Patients throughout Illinois can access care whenever they need it, with only a smartphone, tablet, or computer. As a virtual urgent care, OSF OnCall connects patients with virtual providers. It utilizes the latest technology in video conferencing medical professionals and has a variety of benefits: no appointment is required, minimal wait time, no travel time, and patients can use the pharmacy of their choice. Patients are usually seen by a provider in 30 minutes or less and the cost is only $35 per session. 8 | Healthy for Life Visit OSF OnCall online and enter brief details about your condition and health history. No travel, no waiting rooms, 24/7 access. Kaleena Conrad of Galva, a mom of two who works as a middle school teacher, used OSF OnCall when she noticed a rash on her two-year-old daughter, Grace. She decided it was too late in the evening to go to the nearest PromptCare, which is about 50 minutes away, so she requested an online doctor visit at OSFOnCall.org. Within 20 minutes she was connected to a provider and discussing the possible causes of the rash. “The doctor was very thorough and truly listened to my concerns about my child,” she said, noting the doctor from the online visit called her by telephone five days later to inquire about her daughter’s condition. “Overall, it was a great experience and gave me peace of mind in an uncertain situation,” Kaleena said. “I would definitely use it again.” Virtual urgent care is appropriate for patients with urgent, but not serious, health conditions such as sinusitis, bladder infections, pink eye, cough or bronchitis, bug bites or stings, and colds and flu. The provider can help determine if an injury or illness requires an in-person visit or not. If the medical issue is unable to be treated over a call, the doctor will let you know within a few minutes and you will not be charged for the session. A provider will call within 15-30 minutes via: • Facetime • Skype • Telephone • Video chat Your virtual visit will last about 20 minutes. Telemedicine can be the right option for seeking health care when you do not have time to schedule a traditional doctor appointment. Amy Dooley realized this benefit recently when she had a stuffy nose and head, ear ache, painful cough, and needed her inhaler more than usual. She knew she needed to go to a doctor, but was not sure if she could take time away from work. Amy decided to call OSF OnCall. About 15 minutes after placing the request, she was talking to a provider and was diagnosed with a sinus infection. The doctor also prescribed an antibiotic, which was called in to a pharmacy just blocks from her home. The exam took about 18 minutes, and Amy did not have to leave home – or even change out of her pajamas. She received an email summary of the visit, with instructions for follow-up care with her primary care physician if the symptoms persisted. About four days later, she was back to feeling 100 percent again. “This is so convenient for working mothers, and saved me from having to schedule time away from work,” said Amy. “When you think about travel time to the clinic, time spent in the waiting room, and even time spent waiting for a prescription at a pharmacy, it adds up.” Virtual providers can prescribe medication if clinically appropriate; however, prescription refills and ongoing care are to stay with your primary care physician (PCP) or specialist. Virtual urgent care provides a quick, affordable alternative to the traditional in-person clinic visit. OSF OnCall can be utilized 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, from almost any location in Illinois. To learn more or to request a visit, go to osfhealthcare.org/on-call. Prescriptions, if needed, are sent to your pharmacy. A report summary will be sent to your doctor. Don’t have a doctor? We can help you find one. Healthy for Life | 9 LISTENING TO YOU Have you ever filled out a company survey and wondered if anyone looked at your comments? At OSF HealthCare, not only do we read your comments, but we take action because of them. OSF Listens is a recently launched online patient panel for current and non-OSF patients alike to give valuable input on issues that matter. “OSF Listens allows us to receive valuable input from patients and the community. It gives a voice to our patients and allows them to be included in the decision process,” said Vickie Parry, Marketing Coordinator for OSF HealthCare. The online surveys are categorized by topic and can range from two to 20 questions depending on the subject. Participants can expect to receive one to two surveys per month and can customize the experience. They can answer the interesting and relevant surveys, while declining the rest. Once the results are compiled, we let participants know how their input impacted our decisions. Not only will they see the results, but will know how they helped positively shape OSF HealthCare for the future. We make decisions with our patients in mind. Survey results from the community will allow us to provide even more tailored services. OSF Listens offers an easy way to increase communication between patients and OSF HealthCare. The more active panelists we have to participate, the better representation of our community it will provide. If you would like to join our online patient panel, please visit osflistens.org. 10 | Healthy for Life BIG AND LOUD: FIGHTING BACK IN THE JOURNEY THROUGH PARKINSON’S OSF St. Joseph Medical Center was first introduced to the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) BIG® and LSVT LOUD® therapy program when Occupational Therapist, Erica Miller, enrolled in the course earlier this year. The evidence-based treatment protocols are intended to help adults with Parkinson’s disease as well as children and adults with other neurological conditions. LSVT BIG is a program designed to help initiate and control movement, while the goal of LSVT LOUD is to improve communication through the use of a louder voice. I was so impressed with LSVT BIG because of the emphasis on functional movement. “I was so impressed with LSVT BIG because of the emphasis on functional movement. This program is based on improving performance of daily tasks within a structured format. After seeing the effects of LSVT BIG on a patient’s movement, confidence, and overall quality of life, I was determined to bring the program to OSF Rehabilitation Services,” said Erica. These two programs utilize three different rehabilitation specialists: speech pathologists, occupational therapists (OT), and physical therapists (PT). The speech pathologist works with patients in the LSVT LOUD program, while occupational and physical therapists join forces in the LSVT BIG treatment. The LSVT LOUD program involves the use of vocal exercises and techniques so individuals can monitor and control the volume of their voices. “This program is not about yelling. It is about improving control and communication,” Sara Schramm, Speech Pathologist at OSF Rehabilitation Services. Both programs follow a rigorous month-long schedule, where patients meet with their therapists four days a week for four weeks. Each session is an hour long and includes daily homework practice assignments. Patients must receive a physician referral in order to participate in the program. Once the referral is obtained, there will be an individual evaluation with rehabilitation specialists to determine if either or both of the programs are appropriate. Prospective patients can personalize the program’s objectives into more individualized goals. OSF Rehabilitation Services currently has five certified specialists: one speech pathologist, two occupational therapists, and two physical therapists. They began offering these services in July of this year. OSF Saint Francis Medical Center began providing these programs more than three years ago. If you are interested in learning more about the LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD therapy programs, please call OSF Rehabilitation Services at (309) 662-3311 ext. 4477. The goal of the LSVT BIG program is for patients to use bigger movements in everyday living. LSVT BIG exercises also work both the upper and lower body to increase functional mobility. It focuses on intensive, amplitude-based exercises for the limb motor systems in Parkinson’s patients. Healthy for Life | 11 GROWING THE COMMUNIT Y WITH A GARDEN For the second year in a row, OSF St. Joseph Medical Center is actively helping to solve local health-related issues by growing a garden. The Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), conducted in 2013, determined Bloomington-Normal residents needed more access to nutritious fruits and vegetables. In direct response to those results, OSF St. Joseph made seven raised garden beds and planted a variety of vegetables. 12 | Healthy for Life In 2014, in a collaborative effort from OSF St. Joseph employees and the community, we were able to donate 371 pounds of produce to the local fullservice homeless shelter, Home Sweet Home Ministries. They have been providing “food, shelter, and hope to the hungry, homeless, and hurting” since 1917. The 400 or more people Home Sweet Home serves every day now have easier access to organic and locally-grown vegetables. “OSF St. Joseph works hard to provide the best care we can give our patients. Now with this garden we are able to expand our reach and continue to help make healthy living an accessible, high priority,” said Erin Kennedy, Director of the Center for Healthy Lifestyles at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center. Bread for Life is a co-op within Home Sweet Home which encourages those in need to provide for themselves and their families by giving their time or money in exchange for the food they receive. Many Bread for Life members help with the detail work in the OSF St. Joseph garden as they regularly come to help weed and water the vegetables. OSF St. Joseph employees from various departments have also rallied around this cause. From food service to engineering, and from business development to occupational health, they have helped the Center for Healthy Lifestyles nurture the plants into fruition. In 2014, OSF St. Joseph donated 371 pounds of produce to Home Sweet Home Ministries. As we work to give back to the community, other citizens and organizations are generously supporting and pushing the cause as well. “The help we have received within our community has made a major impact in the success of our garden,” said Erin. “The Normal Rotary Club has kindly donated $500 to put towards the planting season of 2016. We will be able to add three more garden beds and increase the selection of produce we can grow.” This year the garden has grown radishes, jalapeño peppers, tomatoes, green beans, and green bell peppers. Later in the planting season, we will plant zucchini and spinach, as the final harvest will occur towards the end of October. As of this publication, we have donated over 275 pounds of produce to Home Sweet Home. Our motto to serve with the greatest care and love extends our efforts beyond the hospital walls. We are proud of the community we serve and are continuously looking for ways to give back as a not-for-profit hospital. If you too would like to help serve our community and want to learn more about how you can help with the garden, volunteers and employees can stop by the Center for Healthy Lifestyles and talk with director Erin Kennedy. Even though the saying tells us age is mind over matter, it becomes harder to stay fit as we get older. After years of adventures, injuries, and maybe a few surgeries, working out is a different game than it used to be. Warm-ups and cool-downs consume more of the workout than it did 30 years ago while training is tailored for less impact or to avoid old injuries. These new parameters can be intimidating, but they do not have to be with the right knowledge and direction. STAY FIT AT ANY AGE In March, OSF St. Joseph Medical Center and Four Seasons Health Club partnered to provide patients with better access to physical activity through a program called Fit Together. This collaboration allows OSF Medical Group patients who are 65 years or older the opportunity to join an exclusive Four Seasons senior fitness program. “Regular exercise has a myriad of benefits at any age, but specifically it can also help improve quality of life and independence as a patient gets older,” said Erin Kennedy, Director of the Center for Healthy Lifestyles at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center. “We created a program and partnership between fitness professionals and physicians to maximize healthy living and work to prevent age-related health issues.” Members of this program will gain full access to both locations and all the amenities provided. Not only will participants meet with a fitness professional, they will also be able to utilize the facility during all business hours. With over 140 group exercise classes, a pool, cardio machines, and weight equipment, there is something for everyone. “I am involved in the water aerobics, ‘strength and balance’ classes, walking, and the various health seminars they offer,” said Ren. Patients can talk to their physician about Fit Together and receive a referral. Once the referral is made and the patient starts a membership at Four Seasons, the collaboration between the two facilities begins. The patient will meet with a fitness professional at Four Seasons to receive training and guidance, while having the benefit of physician endorsement. “Our goal is to get Fit Together members familiarized with the club, get them started on a suitable workout on an individual basis, and help them create a routine that leads to a healthy lifestyle,” said Jill Usiak, Senior Program Specialist at Four Seasons Health Club. Membership rates are reduced to $20/month in the Fit Together program with a $35/month membership for the participant and their spouse. If you are a patient of OSF Medical Group and are interested in learning more about the Fit Together Program, please contact the Center for Healthy Lifestyles at (309) 661-5151 or Jill Usiak at (309) 661-8611 ext. 259. About a month after joining the Fit Together program, member Ren Cochran said, “I have already seen an improvement in my overall health: more energy, losing inches, and just feeling better about myself.” Four Seasons I 904 Four Seasons Road Bloomington, IL 61701 Phone: (309) 663-2022 (adults only before 10 a.m.) 14 | Healthy for Life Four Seasons II 2401 Airport Road Bloomington, IL 61704 Phone: (309) 661-8611 (adults only at all times) Hours at Both Facilities Monday – Friday: 5 a.m. – 10 p.m. Saturday: 5 a.m. – 8 p.m. Sunday: 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. WELCOME NEW PROVIDERS Christopher Howse, MD OSF Medical Group – Family Medicine 1231 Kleeman Drive Clinton, IL 61727 (217) 935-5022 Kristin Krutke, APN OSF Medical Group – Critical Care, Pulmonary, and Sleep Medicine 1505 Eastland Drive, Suite 320 Bloomington, IL 61704 (309) 661-2368 Andrew Tharp, APN OSF Medical Group – Internal Medicine 1701 E.
