Please Join us in Welcoming, Melissa Howard, RHN RYT To The River Valley Wellness Centre Melissa was born and raised in Fredericton, NB. In school, she excelled at math & physics prompting her teachers to suggest a degree in engineering. She took that path, earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. She spent six years working in the Oil & Gas Industry taking her to Alaska, Oklahoma, Texas and Calgary - during which time she met and married her husband, Tom, a Louisiana native. She's been practicing yoga on and off since University but never truly connect with it until the fall of 2008. One day, she awoke to realize that she'd been living her life blindfolded; stuck in a routine of work, home, supper, tv, and repeating. She returned to yoga as a way to stay present and connected to her true self while she continued to work at her engineering position. By the following spring she had found the strength, confidence and inner guidance to quit her job and hasn't looked back!! Melissa completed a 200 hr intensive Hatha yoga training through Prana Yoga Teacher College (Vancouver, BC); with additional certifications in both Therapeutic Restorative Yoga (Kripalu - Massachusetts) and Prenatal Yoga (Whole Birth Yoga - California). She travelled to India where she received her certificate in Reiki Level I & II. In 2011, she had the amazing pleasure of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) for CARE Canada. Through her travels and yoga practice she became increasingly aware of the importance of eating in a way that supported her body. Melissa believes it is not an “all or nothing” game – making small manageable changes to your lifestyle can leave you feeling empowered, re-energized and reconnected to your body. “We are what we eat and food really is thy medicine” says Melissa “ but on the flip side we also deserve to enjoy a guilt- free full fat brownie!”. In 2012, Melissa graduated from The Canadian School of Natural Nutrition with honors and is currently practicing as a Registered Holistic Nutritional Consultant. Through holistic nutrition and yoga Melissa is now guiding her life by her own hand and is excited at the prospect of supporting others on their journey. “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom” Anais Nin Holistic Nutrition Holistic Nutrition recognizes that everyone is biochemically unique and as such what works for one may not work for another. As a holistic nutritional consultant Melissa looks for the root cause of health conditions and develops a plan to re-establish health using natural whole foods, supplementation when necessary and lifestyle changes. Upcoming Yoga Classes Restorative Yoga Class Relax, Renew and Restore your body. This very slow restorative class is aimed at placing the body (and mind) into a state of deep relaxation, surrender and bliss. Restorative yoga poses and props will be used to fully support your body allowing you to release layers of habitually held tension. Breath awareness and visualization techniques will be offered as a a way to move from deep relaxation into the ultimate state of surrender. Restorative yoga can help to relieve stress, digestive issues, back pain and insomnia. Just to name a few! Absolutely NO experience is necessary – come as you are. Class Times: Monday Evenings October 15 - November 5, 2012 7:00 - 8:15pm Tuesday October 16 -November 6, 2012 10:00 -11:15 am Prenatal Yoga Cultivate grace and strength during your pregnancy by exploring poses that specifically address the shifting shape and unique needs of your changing body. Basic hatha postures and deep relaxation techniques will be used to promote strength, tone, balance and confidence as you prepare your body and mind for birth. This class provides a special environment where women can feel comfortable to honor the difficulties and celebrate the joys of their pregnancy. This class is prefect for all stages of pregnancy. No experience is necessary.
