My paintings examine unfamiliar spaces and the emotive power of the interplay of forms. I work with the
combination of color and form as a visual, abstract documentation of life. Layers of Venetian plaster,
raw pigment, and wax troweled onto wood panels build up to create uncanny spaces. I paint to find
unexpected beauty in the relationships between rich textures and primitive marks.

Stephanie Macrafic
richfield, mn
[email protected]
Stephanie Macrafic is an emerging artist, working primarily in graphite and watercolor. She employs
stark contrast in an abstract manner. Born in Rochester, MN, Stephanie has been doodling, sketching
and creating art from a very young age. Primarily a self-taught artist Stephanie has taken coursework at
the University of Minnesota Duluth, as well as the Bloomington Art Center, to fine tune techniques and
explore new mediums and methods. Stephanie didn’t set out to be a feminist artist or to create artwork
relating to social commentary, but her current work trends in that direction. As she continues to grow
as an artist, and her portfolio develops and changes, so will the themes and subject matter. Current
projects tend to focus on the societal ideals around health, weight, and their emotional impact, and the
larger picture of relating to each other on the basic level of what it means to be a human being.

Stockholm, Sweden in the 60s; moved to Minneapolis in 1970 – resides there still. For nearly 30 years
Klipper has made photographs in all 50 states, distilling and crystallizing the defining characteristics of
American regions. In effect, scoping out the lay of the land and the hand of man - and what all may have
been wrought in places where each overlay: the fruit of enterprise, and, the sullied tumult. Evidence
of the land we are on and the world we find ourselves in; where we are at and who we are; what we’ve
done; and, where we can go.
Terrance Payne

terrencepayne.com
(Artwork donated by Carlos Schenck, M.D.)
Terrence Payne’s archetypal oil pastel portraits combine narrative elements, refined organic forms, along with
delicate and bold lines to suggest movement and evolution in his subject’s character. The earnest beauty
ensuing from the clumsy actions of his subjects as they stumble through life in pursuit of their ideal existence
inspire him. Whether or not they ever reach their prescribed potential is irrelevant to Terrence, it is the fleeting
and universal experiences that happen along the way, which truly define their humanity.

Jeff Surret
Jeff believes that his responsibility as an artist is to avoid artifice and “eye candy,” and to create work that causes
people to stop and explore the subtleties of the image. His “stylistic fingerprint,” as he calls it, blends irregular
and contrasting shapes with a soft brush technique to achieve photographic realism. His palette of natural colors
and rich, muted tones enhances the soft, surreal quality of the painting. Jeff’s landscapes resemble daydreams.
His vistas are elusive and mythical, evoking feelings of solitude and unity with nature. This signature style has
become the source of much of Jeff’s current artistic acclaim. His work has been displayed at the Grace Gallery
and the New York ArtExpo, and he continues to exhibit regularly across the United States.
Liz Rider
athens and atlanta
Well before high school, Rider displayed intense talent in painting, and was consistently regarded as
the most artistically gifted student in her class. From the age of six onward, she received several artistic
awards at her school and public competitions.
Rider’s most recent work has blended an abstract palette and arrangement with natural settings and
forms, so as to bring out the simple brilliance of a natural scene, while also seeing within that landscape
primitive abstract forms. The result is a kind of surrealist landscape wherein Rider asks us to compare
fields of undulating grass with curved, abstract lines – where nature and abstract meet.
Rider currently works out of her studios in both Athens and Atlanta.

the cause:
Free Arts Minnesota inspires hope and builds self-esteem for youth who have experienced poverty, homelessness, abuse and
mental illness, using the healing powers of artistic expression and caring adult mentors. Free Arts partners with other nonprofits such as transitional housing, residential treatment centers, domestic violence shelters, and rec centers to reach
children in need. Free Arts programming provides caring adult mentors and arts experiences to the kids who need them
most. This builds self-esteem, offers new communication skills and provides creative opportunities for success.
Each week in the Weekly Mentorship Program, mentors and staff witness the undeniable impact of Free Arts programs on
the children at our partner agencies. The consistency of mentors who volunteer their time with Free Arts youth each week
provides stability in their lives as they endure difficult life situations. Free Arts youth benefit from opportunities to share
their creative voices and unique talents, and communities benefit from healthier and more productive citizens.
