Yuma’s Gila Ridge High School Levi L. Riley was selected as one of two representatives
from Arizona to represent our state at Boys Nation in Washington from July 19-26, where young
leaders from 49 states receive an education on the structure and function of federal government.
The 1946 American Legion National Convention adopted the event as an official youth activity.
Three years later, it became American Legion Boys Nation. At the event, each delegate acts as a
senator from his Boys State. The young law makers caucus at the beginning of the session, then
organize into committees and conduct hearings on bills submitted by program delegates. Senators
learn the proper method of handling bills, according to U.S. Senate rules.
The week of government training also includes lectures, forums and visits to federal agencies, national shrines, institutions, memorials and historical sites. On Capitol Hill, Boys Nation senators meet
with elected officials from their home states. Since its inception, a number of its graduates have
been elected to public office, including presidents, congressmen, state governors and state legislators.
Korean War Remembrance Luncheon
The Korean War was fought from 1950 until 1953 and pitted the United States,
South Korea, and their UN allies against North Korea and the Chinese Communists.
After three years, one month, and two days, combat ended in Korea as the Armistice was
signed at Panmunjom. Signed at 1000 (10:00 a.m.), it became effective at 2200 (10:00
p.m.) on the same day. Korea remains in an armistice status without a formal peace treaty
to this day! Sergeant Harold R. Cross, K Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Regimental
Combat Team, was killed by mortar blast at 2040 (8:40 p.m.), the last American soldier
killed in action in the Korean War! July 27, 1953 we mark the end of the Korean War.
July 27, 2013 from 11:00a.m. to 1:30p.m. in the Lounge. We will be having a cold-cut
luncheon to honor all of those who served (living & past), in this war. We are asking any
members who may have any memorabilia or souvenirs to please bring them to share with
us!

Coast Guard’s 223rd Birthday
The U.S. Coast Guard is one of the five armed forces of the United States and the
only military organization within the Department of Homeland Security. Since 4 August 1790
the Coast Guard has safeguarded our Nation's maritime interests and environment around
the world. The Coast Guard is an adaptable, responsive military force of maritime professionals whose broad legal authorities, capable assets, geographic diversity and expansive partnerships provide a persistent presence along our rivers, in the ports, littoral regions and on
the high seas. Coast Guard presence and impact is local, regional, national and international. These attributes make the Coast Guard a
unique instrument of maritime safety, security and environmental
stewardship. Today’s U.S. Coast Guard, with nearly 42,000 men and
women on active duty, is a unique force that carries out an array of civil
and military responsibilities touching almost every facet of the U.S.
maritime environment. The Coast Guard's motto is Semper Paratus,
meaning "Always Ready."
Purple Heart Day
The purple Heart is awarded to any member of the Armed Forces that
has been wounded or killed, died as a result of a battle, or otherwise designated by the United States. This now includes those persons killed as a result of a friendly fire. Now we celebrate Purple
Heart Day on the anniversary of its inception, August 7th. On this
day, it is our patriotic duty to remember and recognize those people willing to serve our country, no matter the price!
V-J Day
V-J Day is a celebration of the Surrender of Japan, which was initially
announced on August 15, 1945 (August 14th U.S. date), ending combat in the
Second World War.
At noon, Japan standard time on that day, Emperor Hirohito’s Announcement of Japan’s acceptance of the terms of the Potsdam Declaration
was broadcast to the Japanese people over the radio. Earlier and same Day,
the Japanese government broadcast an announcement over Radio Tokyo that
“acceptance of the Potsdam Proclamation (would be) coming soon,” then advised the Allies of the surrender by sending a cable to U.S. President
Harry S. Truman via the Swiss diplomatic mission in Washington.
Since Japan was the last Axis Power to surrender and V-J Day followed
V-E Day, by three months, V-J Day marked the end of World War II.

Words from the Commander
For those of you that don’t know me-- my name is Wayne Howard, and
I’m the newly elected Commander here at Post 19. I’d like to thank everyone for
the confidence they have shown to elect me as Commander for the coming year.
I would like everyone associated with the Post to please show your appreciation to the new members and guests. It only takes a few kind welcome words
to make people want to come back and enjoy our various events. We have one of
the largest Post in the state, yet there is this stigma from other Veterans organizations and present members that don’t come here, because we’re known as
the most unfriendly Post locally. Lets make a concerted effort to change that image.
Everyone that is planning a trip or staying in town, have a great summer.
For God and Country,
Wayne S. Howard

Senior Vice Commander
Thank you for electing me to serve as your Senior Vice Commander for another year. I regret
that we fell short of making 100% again this year-we ended up 42 members short, with 896 paid
for 95.52% for Department Convention; time to look ahead to making our goals for 2013-2014.
Many thanks to my 2013 Membership Team for their hard work and dedication; also a big
thank you to everyone who paid their dues, signed or transferred a member, or collected
someone’s dues – you have taken an important step in supporting your American Legion Post.
Memorial Day Services around town were VERY well attended this year. I cannot say thank
you enough to everyone who pulled together to honor our departed comrades. Thanks to everyone who turned out to honor our veterans with the pride, dignity and respect that they rightfully
deserve. Dale Hiller and the Ceremonial Team did a fantastic job at every stop, and I am extremely proud to serve with such a loyal and dedicated group.
New Officers have been elected and installed for 2013-2014:
Commander – Wayne Howard
Sr. Vice – Rev. Thomas Woodward
Jr. Vice – Bob Carey
Finance Officer – Dean Calvert
Executive Committee – Bobby Lohr, Larry Lord, Gary Rochester, Gary Johnson, Armando Quijano (Q) and Clarence Smythe
Please support these Officers as they guide Post 19 through the next year. We welcome your
input at Legion meetings; remember, this is YOUR Post!
For God and Country,
Rev. Woodie Woodward
Sr. Vice Commander
Acting Adjutant

From the Desk of Richard F. Perez
This year’s Memorial Day Ceremonies were handled very respectful and
professional in the remembrance of our fallen veterans throughout the city
from the burial ground at the Cocopah Burial Grounds to the last notes of taps
at the Post at 1500. Thanks to everyone involved.
Thanks to Fred Richard, Judy LaBounty and all Post members for assisting during the Boys/Girls State breakfast.
Special thanks also to Terry Greene, Wayne Howard, Bob Carey, Jerry
Moon and Clarence Smythe for attending and making presentations to the
young men and women from the various Yuma Jr. Highs receiving U. S. Constitution and Citizenship awards.
And finally a big thank you to the custodians, bartenders and the community service people who keep the Post clean, drinks cold and the hall set up
for special events. Most of the time it’s a thankless job. I would especially like
to recognize the two young men performing our custodial duties, CPL Rowland
Castallanos, USMC Iraq Purple Heart Recipient and Specialist Raul Atondo U S
Army Iraq Combat Veteran serving two combat tours.
I would like some suggestions for any new types of events or programs
to improve public awareness of our Post. Not enough Veterans know about what
the American Legion stands for, or what we do for local veterans and our community.
Please participate in “Red shirt Friday” to honor our troops serving
overseas. And as always please stop by the Post Office and say “Hello”. Remember I work for you, the membership.

Richard
