T
SAINT BARTH
WEEKLY,
NUMBER 100
The Saint Barth Weekly is
celebrating its 100th edition
this week!
We must thank our many readers
and our faithful advertisers for
accompanying us on this
adventure, which is now in its
fourth season. To celebrate the
occasion, we have changed the
look of the island’s only Englishlanguage weekly— its usual newsprint has been replaced by glossy
paper to dress it up just in time
for the holidays!
Full of information about our little
island, this mini-tabloid-size
newspaper includes recaps of the
most interesting and most news
worthy stories from Le Journal de
St. Barth, The Weekly’s big brother, plus specific articles and
information to help you enjoy your
stay on the island.
The Weekly is free and comes out
every Friday, from November
through the end of July. Pick up a
copy at your hotel, or at numerous
restaurants, boutiques, and the
Municipal Tourist Office
in Gustavia.
When are not on the island, you
can visit our web partner,
www.st-barths.com and download
The Weekly every Friday.
This way, no matter where you are
in the world, you can stay in touch
with your favorite island.
A very merry holiday season to all!

his is the time of year
when the attention of the
island turns to The Port of
Gustavia. Port Director Bruno Gréaux
and his staff are busy from early morning to sundown, as mega-motor-yachts
and sailboats are arriving daily, jockeying for spots to enjoy the peak of the
holiday season in the island’s little port.
The main docks are already full, with
many of the port’s annual guests at their
habitual spots; the mega-yacht, Ultima
By the end of December, a flotilla of
sailboats will have arrived for the New
Year’s Eve Regatta, which along with
the St. Barth Bucket, is one of the major
sailing events organized locally. The
Port of Gustavia stays on its toes during
these events, assuring safe entry and
exit for the numerous boats as they
maneuver in and out of the port. On
New Year’s Eve, the port is really hopping, with parties on many of the boats
and dancing to live music on the dock.

of the dock and the classic wooden sailboat, Ticonderoga, is tied up at the other
end, as usual. One of the main economic
forces on the island, the port has undergone major improvement over the past
year, with the architecturally sophisticated “Capitainerie” providing new
offices for the staff as well as a multipurpose room that has proved useful for
a variety of events, serving as the pressroom for the Transat ag2r last spring,
then the home of the local theatre festival, and most recently, the Rotary
Club’s benefit harp concert.
harbor at the stroke of midnight that
their lights seem to twinkle all the way
from St Barth to St Martin. But the port
is not just a place to party. Gréaux
reminds all clients of the port to respect
their neighbors in terms of noise, not to
light fires or bbq’s while in the port
zone, and that the trash area on the dock
is strictly for household trash. All other
items must be taken to the municipal
dump near Public. The simple rules and
regulations for the port are spelled out
in its official magazine, Harbour, whose
handsome 10th edition is available at
the Capitanerie.

PEOPLE WATCH
■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■
Jeffrey Dread
Haitian-born artist Jeffrey Dread is often seen in
Saint Barth, zipping around the island with the top
down on his cool, black convertible Mini Cooper.
Last season he was part of the art scene with an
exhibit at Nikki Beach entitled Hip Rock Hollywood Icon, with pop-style portraits of such stars as
Bono, P. Diddy, Mick Jagger, Sophia Loren, Sharon
Stone, and Giorgio Armani. This year he has not yet
been sighted on the island but has launched a series
of holiday gifts including t-shirts (for humans and
their pooches), boxer shorts, hats, bags, mugs, and
even refrigerator magnets with his pop images,
ranging from a New York City taxicab to his recent
portrait of Robert Kennedy. There is something
almost Andy Warhol-like about Dread’s work, with
bright colors, celebrity portraits, and everyday
objects as art. Check out the gift items at www.cafepress.com while his paintings can be seen at
www.yessy.com/jefferydread/index.html. Stay
tuned to The Weekly for news about this jetsetter’s
next exhibit in Saint Barth
Van Ki Pass In Saint Barth
For The Winter
First with Shadowfax, then Lone Fox, and now
Van Ki Pass, skipper Randy West has been sailing in and out of the Port of Gustavia for over
25 years. This is the first season that Van Ki
Pass has been in the harbor however, as its new
owner, Liza Baldwin, recently renovated this
65’ wooden sloop just in time to sail in last
summer’s 100th edition of the NewportBermuda Race— and win in its class! A native
of Newport, RI, Baldwin is new to the racing
scene, but she certainly has a beautiful boat and
a fearless skipper. Let’s see what they can do in
Saint Barth’s New Year’s Eve Regatta on
December 31.

Donna Del Sol
Redefines
Classic Jewelry
A
jewelry store that
stands out from the
crowd is Donna del
Sol, a boutique that has been
open in Saint Barth since
1994, on the upper level of
the Carre d’Or in Gustavia
(She also now has a small
store at the Guanahani Hotel
for those who do not want to
battle traffic in town).
Recently expanded to
include the space next door,
the boutique has showcases
of ready-to-wear pieces, but
also serves as a showroom
where customers can order
custom designs, tailored to
any budget.
The owner of the store,
Donna Rosell, is an Ameri-
St Barth Weekly n°100
can who has lived in Saint
Barth for 17 years. Her philosophy is to create jewelry
that the modern woman can
actually wear. “I like to set
precious stones in sportier
mountings, in keeping with
today’s more active
lifestyle,” she says. An
example of this is her linking of diamonds in any size
and any color with simple
gold links that can be worn
as a bracelet or necklace.
“You should be able to wear
your jewelry,” she insists.
Unusual gemstones are
another signature of the
Donna del Sol collections:
opals and tourmalines in
custom-cut shapes and colors can be made into pieces
dressy enough for a blacktie event. “Coral and other
stones in all shades of red
and orange, as well as pink,
are very popular,” Rosell
notes. She works with fiery
opals, pink and red sapphires, and pale pink kunzite, pairing them in unusual
combinations such as pink
opals and brown diamonds.
“I recently completed a
necklace of natural pink
pearls. They are very soft on
the skin,” she says.
A recent addition to the
Donna del Sol line is the
Symbology collection,
which includes a white and
yellow gold peace symbol,
with one side representing
peace; the other love. This
collection also includes
pieces based on the prayers
of the Kabbalah, which is
studied by Jews and nonJews around the world. “We
have ten different prayers
that can be laser-cut directly
into the stones, so that each
piece is custom-made,”
explains Rosell, who
believes in the mystical
powers these prayers can
offer.
Her newest collection is
called “Astro Us,” and will
launch this season. “The
pieces include a circle of
Zodiac signs with a sun in
the middle with white diamonds to represent the
female and a flame of black
diamonds to represent the
male in a couple,” she
explains. “The sun and
flame can be moved to each
person’s individual sign.
These make very personal
gifts.”
On the horizon is a new
boutique in St. Tropez,
France, which will double as
a distribution point for the
Donna del Sol brand in
Europe. “This is a natural
expansion,” says Rosell,
who caters to a decidedly
international clientele. Her
w e b s i t e ,
www.donnadelsol.com, also
has an international reach
and is becoming a successful marketing tool. “People
order every day on line,”
she notes.

Champagne
Bruno Paillard Brut
1er Cuvée
History:
Born in Riems in 1953, Bruno Paillard comes from an old family of
winemakers and created his own
champagne house in 1981.
The most recent of the champagne
houses, Bruno Paillard is an independent, family owned enterprise. A specialist in high-quality champagne,
they produce 600,000 bottles per year
and export to 22 different countries.
They use only the best quality grapes
from the champagne region, with
grapes from different areas to create
the best blend, and an excellent dry
champagne with complexity. Produced using grapes from just one year,
each bottle is marked with the year of
the vintage; this has become an important way for consumers to know what
they are buying, as all wines taste different from year to year.
Taste:
The aroma first reveals the citrus fruits
of Chardonnay: lime and grapefruit.
Then the red fruit aromas are
revealed: currant, raspberry, and
Morello cherries, characteristic of
Pinot Noir. When aerated, other aromas such as candied fruits or the exotic aromas of Pinot Meunier are
revealed (pineapple, banana).
The palate is very clear, with a slight
hint of plum and pear, and a pleasant
lemon-butter flavor that lingers. The
tiny bubbles are a sign of quality.
This champagne should be served at
48°F with hors d’oeuvres such as
duck liver terrine and brioche toast, or
with a fresh fish tartar, dill and citrus.
Where to find it?
In St Barth, at the restaurants at Le
Sereno and Le Toiny hotels.
And at the wine shop, Absolutely
Wine, in Grand Fond. 05 90 52 20 96

Tradewind Aviation:
From San Juan To Saint Barth
N
ow in its third year of service
to Saint Barth, Tradewind
Aviation offers a stylish way
to fly to the island from San Juan.
Based in Connecticut as well as Puerto
Rico, this charter company is specialized in business travel and operates the
Nantucket Shuttle from New York to
the New England island of Nantucket
in the summer. Many of
the airline’s clients also
come to Saint Barth in the
winter, and started inquiring about charter flights to
the island. “Our clientele
for Saint Barth is building,” says one of
Tradewind’s owners,
David Zara. The service
from San Juan avoids the
transfer in St Martin all
together, and for passengers coming from Los
Angeles, for example, it is
a good option after the
long flight from LAX.
“We know many of our
passengers and are friendly with them, we see them
socially,” notes Zara. “We
offer very personalized
service.” Both Zara, and
another company principal, David Zipkin, who
serves as director of marketing, spend much of the winter in
Saint Barth, adding to the personal
touch they can offer their clients.
All of the planes that Tradewind flies
in the Caribbean—from the Pilatus
PC-12 (which flies at 270 knots at
30,000 feet) to the Cessna Grand Caravan and Beech Super King Air 200—
are outfitted with comfortable executive interiors and are equipped with the
latest in safety and communications
systems, not to mention air-conditioning, a feature that Zara considers
essential in the Caribbean. Every flight
has two pilots aboard, and every pilot
holds an ATP (airline transport pilot)
license. They also train regularly on
flight simulators to keep their skills
sharp. Zara, who speaks at least seven
languages, is a pilot as well, with 7000
St Barth Weekly n°100
hours of flying under his belt and
experience on a range of aircraft from
a B-58 and Cessna Caravan to the Pilatus PC-12 and King Air B-200, as well
as the Gulfstream G-II, G-III, and GIV— planes he often uses for flights to
one corner of the globe or another.
“Our pilots are our ambassadors,” he
says. “We only hire people who take
great pride in what they do. We think
every client should have a great experience with us.”
Today the company has an extensive
Caribbean connection, offering charter
flights throughout the region: not only
to Saint Barth but also to the British
Virgin Islands (Tortola and Anguilla),
St. Kitts, Nevis, Barbuda, Antigua,
Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Puerto
Rico, including Vieques. According to
the style of airplane that one charters,
the flying time from Puerto Rico to
Saint Barth can be as short as 45 minutes aboard a Pilatus or a little over an
hour in a Cessna Grand Caravan. Perfect for those who would like to spend
the weekend in Saint Barth!

Australian Chef In The Kitchen
At François Plantation
F
or many years the restaurant at
François Plantation was one of
the culinary highlights of the
island, and after several changes of chef
and direction in the kitchen, it seems as
if the restaurant must once again be considered among the best “tables” in Saint
Barth. Back for her second season in the
kitchen is Australian chef Sharon Chamberlain, who trained in her native country, at Marks, a restaurant on the coast of
Victoria about 90 minutes outside of
Melbourne.
Chamberlain brings with her an open,
multi-cultural culinary philosophy.
“Coming from Australia, which is a very
multi-cultural country, we like to mix
textures and flavors to adapt to various
cultures.” With an eye to local products
in the Caribbean, Chamberlain uses
fruits and vegetables from Guadeloupe
and Saint Martin as well as fish from
Saint Barth (in addition to fish and meat
from France.) “I like nice, fine food,
with clear flavors,” she says.
(© Gérald Tessier)
Wines from François Plantation’s extensive cellar enhance her menus. In fact,
Robert Eden, the owner of François
Plantation, is a vintner as well, with
vineyards in the Languedoc Roussillon
region in France. His environmentally
friendly wines can be sampled at the
restaurant.
The pastry chef is Jimmy Frannais,
whose signature dessert is a “cigar”
made with tobacco ice cream and cognac
mousse. Since this taste combination
might not suit all palettes, his simpler
desserts include cheesecake and a spicy
chocolate tart.
A special treat at François Plantation:
the “Cigar” (© Dominique Silberstein)
Chamberlain also works with restaurant
consultant Christophe Langrée. Together
they work on menus and keep an eye on
overall excellence. “I think people come
to François Plantation for fine food, and
they want to be surprised by things they
don’t find everyplace else. They want to
be excited by the food.” (Reservations:

The first “value” cruise to stop in Saint Barth
of easyJet, he moved into
hotels, car rentals, and lowcost credit. His dream is to
develop the low-cost cruise
market even more with a
ship for 600 passengers, to
be built in his native country
of Greece.
T
he cruise ship, easyCruise One, made its
first appearance in
Saint Barth as part of the
inaugural voyage for its new
Caribbean itinerary. Stelios
Haji-Ioannou, the entrepreneurial founder of easyJet,
who became famous after
creating the low-coast airline
ten years ago, personally
welcomed the 80 passengers
who were aboard this cruise.
Saint-Barthélemy: an exclusive destination for a handful
of well-heeled clients? An
idea that has flown out the
window thanks to the new
concept in cruising launched
by the group that founded
easyJet. The cruise ship,
easyCruise One, now in its
second winter season in the
Caribbean, made its first stop
in Saint Barth on Saturday,
December 9. The 80 passengers, for the most part English-speaking, were brought
into the Port of Gustavia via
tenders, with the ship itself
anchored in the outer harbor.
The “port intensive”
idea
The group shopped in Gustavia of course, visiting a
sampling of the island’s boutiques that offer everything
Stelios Haji-Ioannou

Practical information
from luxury goods to items
“made in Saint Barth.” They
were able to complete their
day in port by enjoying an
evening meal at one of the
restaurants that serves the
island’s celebrated French
cuisine. This is where the
revolutionary ideas of Stelios
Haji-Ioannou come in.
He has abandoned the traditional formula of the “all
inclusive” crusie: on his “nofrills” ships, passengers pay
only for the cost of the nights
they spend aboard the ship,
which are in fact very reasonable (starting as low as
13 euros per night). He then
organizes the rest: all of the
elements of a cruise that
were formerly figured into
one overall price, from
drinks and meals aboard the
ship to round trip airfare and
transportation to and from
the initial port, with everything on a pay as you go
basis.
Plying the waters of the
Cariibean for the second season, easyCruiseOne has
embarked on a new circuit
which includes the islands of
Sint Maarten/Saint-Martin,
St. Barthélemy, Anguilla, St.
Kitts, Nevis, and Antigua.
The “port intensive” idea is
based on having many fewer
activities aboard the ship,
with an accent on discover-
ing the port itself instead.
A 600-passenger
cruise ship on the
drawing boards
Even the schedule is different: the boat is at sea part of
the morning, but on the other
hand, it remains in port much
later (sailing between 3:007:00am). This concept is also
rather revolutionary in the
world of cruising. “We have
the capacity for 170 passengers,” notes Stelios, who
admits that the season started
off a little quietly. “Decem-
ber is generally a very good
month and I remain confident.” This 39 year-old
entrepreneur goes from one
successful project to the
next, and is never short of
new ideas: after the success
The itinerary: St Maarten
(Philipsburg); St Barth (Gustavia); Anguilla (Sandy
Ground); St Kitts (Basseterre); Antigua (St Johns);
Nevis (Charlestown).
Two cruise formulas are
available for the Caribbean
this winter (through (through
April 13, 2007): a circuit of
seven days, or just three to
four days (two nights on
board minimum) or a longer
circuit of 14 days (the sevenday itinerary twice).
A weekend package (three
nights from Friday-Monday)
is available starting at 145
euros; a seven-night voyage
(starting Friday, Monday, or
Wednesday) starts at 263
euros.

“Winter Trees on Oak Paneled Boxes”
On Exhibit At The Carl Gustav
A
touch of winter can be seen
at the Carl Gustav Hotel
where a collection of paintings entitled “Winter Trees On Oak
Paneled Boxes” is on display. The
paintings are by Michelle Marie, a New
York-based visual artist and singer
whose met with international acclaim
when she painted a series of society
women who were past their glory days,
in the series she calls Old Beauty
Queens. Actual gemstones, from diamonds to sapphires, represented the
women’s jewels. Michelle Marie also
has a collection of almost whimsical
flower paintings, with intensely bright
colors, which capture the mood of an
exuberant summer day.
The paintings at the Carl Gustav, which
will remain on exhibit for the entire year,
are more geometric in form, with groups
of differently shaped triangles creating
the starkness of the trees in winter. The
almost monochromatic paintings are
small, but a grouping of two or four
would make a nice visual statement, as
they complement one another in theme.
The oak boxes add a touch of natural
wood to the trees.
Originally from Atlanta, Georgia,
Michelle Marie now splits her time
between New York City (an apartment in
Manhattan) and the country (a house in
upstate New York), and articles about
both of her homes acclaim her sense of
style and decor. Her paintings reflect the
landscapes of these two different environments as well as her travels, with col-
lections such as Summer Fun and Banana
Trees. Michelle Marie works primarily in
oils, but giclee prints, or high-quality limited-edition reproductions, signed and
numbered, are available of many of her
paintings.
Perhaps the next time Michelle Marie
visits Saint Barth, she’ll share her singing
talents (she has recorded two albums) as
well as her artwork. Her collections can
be seen at www.michellemarieart.com
The Wedding Party
Kimberly Claire Santora

on Saturday, December
9, 2006 at the Catholic
Church, Notre Dame de
l’Assomption, in Lorient.
This marks the first time
that an American couple
was married in the
Catholic Church in Saint
Barth and the first time
that an American priest,
Father Philip Oriole,
officiated at the church.
