N°119 - May 5, 2007 EE FR WEEKLY St-Barth Local News in English Published by “Le Journal de Saint-Barth” 05 90 27 65 19 - [email protected] Saint Barth Votes For New French President On Saturday ■■■■■■■ SAINT BARTH VOTES FOR NEW FRENCH PRESIDENT ON SATURDAY T WELCOME! The St. Barth Weekly is happy to be back for its fourth season. The Weekly is designed to help you put your finger on the pulse of the local community. Featuring an English résumé of the top stories in our French newspaper, Le Journal de Saint Barth, as well as original articles in English, The St. Barth Weekly is the only completely English-language newspaper on the island. It is distributed on the island every week from November through the end of July. Our most exciting news is that each Friday, The Weekly is also available online at Saint Barth Online (www.stbarths.com), the wonderful web site launched in 1996, and now run by our friends Bruno and Géraldine Colletas. Thanks to them, you can download every edition of The St. Barth Weekly, so that no matter where you are in the world, you can stay in touch with your favorite island. 2 he final round of voting for a new French president will take place in Saint Barth on Saturday, May 5, the day before voters go to the polls in metropolitan France on Sunday, May 6. Former Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy (UMP, right) is running against the Socialist candidate Ségolène Royal. In Saint Barth, 3,019 voters of the 4,701 registered took part in the primary on April 21, marking a record high of 63.41%. The right-wing candidate, Nicolas Sarkozy, was the leader in Saint Barth where mayor Bruno Magras, official representative of the UMP party on the island, supports his campaign. The polling places are open from 8am to 8pm, and the votes will be counted immediately thereafter. The individual results will be announced in each of the four locations, then the final count will announced at City Hall. Yet they cannot be broadcast beyond the island until 2pm the next day when the polls close in France, and at which time we will know the identity of the new French president who will succeed Jacques Chirac. Economy: TOWARD THE CREATION OF A NEW PROFESSIONAL STRUCTURE FOR SAINT BARTH A professional structure grouping all the economic sectors on the island: that is the basis for a new organization that will represent the various interests of Saint Barth (businesses, industry, artisans, sales, independent workers, etc…) when the new Overseas Collectivity is created. This new structure will replace the current chamber of commerce and industry in Guadeloupe when it comes to defending the economic interests of island. The economic lead- ers of the island came to this decision after a series of meetings last week. These meetings helped define this future inter-professional chamber— its goals, its legal status, its funding, and operation. Island businessmen expressed their desire to have representation specific to Saint Barth, and separate from that of Guadeloupe and Saint Martin. During the time it will take to establish this new structure, they will meet regularly to continue building the project and start immediately to establish funding, and outline goals, which include various business rules and regulations. St Barth Weekly n°119 ■■■■■■■ Saint Barth Theatre Festival CONTEMPORARY THEATRE HIGHLIGHTS THE 6TH EDITION SB Artists, a local nonprofit organization, continues its exploration of theatrical genres with the sixth edition of the annual Saint Barth Theatre Festival. The theme this year is the discovery of textbased contemporary theatre. Running from Friday, May 4 through Sunday, May 13, this year’s festival is the most modern to date, and also the largest with six productions on the menu: three by the amateur actors of SB Artists, and three others that have recently been performed in France, and one of which, “L’envol du Pingouin,” has been nominated for a Molière Award (the French equivalent of the Tony Awards in the US) in the best one-man show category. The schedule also includes “Jerry Finnegan’s Sister” (La sœur de Jerry King) by American playwright Jack Neary, as well as “Y’a des jours comme ça,” a police comedy that ran for several months at Théâtre Le Mery, one of the most popular café-theatres in Paris. These professional productions augment those by SB Artists, our local amateur troupe led by Nadège Emmanuelian, who also organizes the festival. The company has been hard at work rehearsing for a few months and Emmanuelian says the plays are in good St Barth Weekly n°119 shape. She will perform “In Transit” (Les pas perdus), a play by Denise Bonal written in 2000. Seventeen actors appear on stage one after the other to sing, dance, tell stories, slam… any form is good to portray the mass of humanity passing by in a train station. After performing in “Inconnu à cette adresse,” during the 2005 festival, Charlotte and Corinne are back in “Blanc,” a poignant text in which two sisters have a vision that their mother is going to die. From life and death to humor in “Joyeuse Pagaille,” a pure Vaudeville performed by six members of SB Artists. For film producer Joshua Harrison, one of the festival’s co-founders who works on programming the films each year, this was one of the most intimist festivals yet, with a selection of films focusing on the issues of daily life: “In the past 12 years we have succeeded in taking a complete tour of Caribbean cinema, its various styles, its particularities, its important messages. This year’s festival looked more closely at the daily life of people, as if examining their environments through a microscope.” This 12th edition also marked a larger geographic area, with three Latin American films that fall outside of the strict confines of Caribbean Cinema: The Harder They Come, The Best Of Caribbean Cinema The 12th edition of the St. Barth Film Festival was marked by a personal style of filmmaking, delving into the daily lives of such characters as the title role of Adolfo, a frustrated taxi driver in Havana, Cuba. Saudade do Futuro, Pan’s Labyrinth, and Rolling Family, the first Argentinean film shown at the festival. This choice was intentional notes Harrison, as a means to highlight the similarities that exist between Caribbean culture and that of certain Latin American countries. Following this line of logic, some festival goers may have had difficulty explaining the presence of Pan’s Labyrinth, a magnificent film crowned by three Academy Awards (with six nominations), and the first Joshua Harrison, co-director of the St. Barth Film Festival/Cinéma Caraïbe & Christopher Laird, director of Gayelle TV in Trinidad & Tobago. 04 fantasy/thriller film to be shown at the festival: “The filmmaker, Guillermo del Toro, the producer, the cameraman, are all Mexican. Only the casting is international, yet at least half of the actors are Mexican as well,” explains Harrison, who also wanted to illustrate the increasing importance of Mexican filmmakers in the international film industry. “Like many other Caribbean filmmakers, they often have to leave their native country and work elsewhere in order to get established.” The organizers of the St. Barth Film Festival have a special place in their hearts for The Harder They Come, which was shown as part of the first festival in 1996, and again as part of this year’s program in tribute to its director, Perry Henzell, who passed away in November 2006. For Joshua Harrison, this 35 year-old landmark Jamaican film, which pushed the Caribbean and reggae music onto the international scene, remains “the quintessential Caribbean film. There has never been anything else quite like it.” Unless the long-awaited sequel, No Place Like Home, completed not long before the director’s death, proves to be better. “This film will be released in the United States, and we hope there will be a version sub-titled in French so that we can show it here,” Harrison says. This delay is due to technical problems on another boat in the same shipyard, making it impossible to meet the initial schedule. To date, the hull has been completed (as can be seen in the photo), and the boat has been moved to the technical center for the SNSM (National Rescue At Sea Society) in Saint Malo on the coast of Brittany in France where the electronics and motors will soon be installed. With a length of 35’ and two 330 hp engines this propeller-driven boat will be able to reach a cruising speed of 25 knots and is better adapted to tropical water conditions than is the Contre Amiral Noël whose hydro jets cause problems on a regular basis. Rotten Tree Falls Close to Piment Restaurant I n spite of one person who was slightly injured, the customers at the Piment, a restaurant at Villa Créole, were very lucky last Sunday afternoon. It was a little after 1pm when the enormous “quenetier” tree planted on the other side of the road suddenly fell in proximity to their heads. A light gust St Barth Weekly n°119 of wind toppled the tree, whose trunk turned out to be completely rotten. It took almost two hours for a team of firemen and residents to clear the debris and open the road. Fortunately traffic was not backed up thanks to a detour through a private parking lot. Source: corossol.info 05 he 6th edition of the Rotary Rally took place on Sunday, April 29, with all monies raised, plus funds from previous activities, to go to a charitable organization on the island. A record number of 90 people took park in this car rally around the island that was based on the theme of the Arawaks, the first inhabitants of Saint Barth. Divided into 14 cars, the 14 teams crisscrossed the island in search of clues and riddles. The Based on the design of the bronze winner was the team statue that will decorate the traffic from Sibarth Real circle at La Tourmente, one of Estate with 1508 the rally activities was to take the photo of an Arawak. points.
