This could be a threat to the United States, since the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which carries the virus, is also endemic in certain places on the North American continent. A situation “potentially explosive,” alerts a French epidemic expert. void mosquitoes! Especially the ones with black and white zebra stripes, the Aedes Aegypti… not content to simply be bothersome, these little devils also carry dengue and chikungunya viruses, both of which are in an epidemic state in Saint Barth. There has been a dengue epidemic for almost a year, and the chikungunya epidemic began in late December, at which point the Regional Health Agency confirmed the proliferation of the virus SaintBarth. A According to a report dated January 10, there are 25 cases of chikun- gunya that have been confirmed or judged probably since the start of the epidemic, not counting those still awaiting confirmation via blood test from the 54 possible cases seen by doctors (not to mention those people who might have the virus and have not seen a doctor). The first cases of chikungunya in the region were confirmed in early December on the neighboring island of Saint Martin. The epidemic there has spread with close to 400 suspected cases and 200 cases confirmed or considered probable as of January 10 (A new report should be out by the end of the week). According to specialists, the epidemic is the first of this virus in the Caribbean as well as the entire Americas zone. As a tropical virus, Chikungunya is generally not considered a serious disease, and the severe cases are less frequent than severe cases of dengue. In addition to the symptoms of dengue— high fever, aches, general tiredness—Chikungunya is also marked by joint pain, which can sometimes be incapacitating, even preventing the patient from holding utensils to eat. Some cases can be directly or indirectly fatal. According to epidemiologists, this strain of the virus is Asian, and was imported to Saint Martin by someone returning from a trip. The virus has since spread to the other French islands, all of which are under surveillance. In Martinique, SPRAYING AGAINST CHIKUNGUNYA In its fight against proliferation of mosquitoes carrying the chikungunya virus— which has reached epidemic proportions in Saint Martin—the Collectivity will continuing spraying insecticides around the island as follows: • Thursday, January 16: St Jean, Lorient, and Saline. • Friday, January 17: Grand Fond, Toiny, Petit and Grand Culde-Sac. • Monday, January 20: Marigot, Pointe Milou, Vitet, and Camaruche. It is recommended to leave windows and doors open during the spraying. Also be sure to empty any stagnant water around the house, even in vases and flower pots. Weekly 295_Mise en page 1 13/01/14 19:19 Page3 3 St Barth Weekly n°295 there are as many as 120 possible cases, of which 48 are probable or confirmed, and in Guadeloupe, a dozen cases have been confirmed or considered probable. But has the virus been transmitted to other islands as well? Anguilla? The Virgin Islands? The Dominican Republic? Puerto Rico? Or even the United States? At the moment, there is no information available. But a French expert interviewed by Agence France Presse (AFP) considers the situation to be “potentially explosive,” with the risk of transmission of the virus to the Americas as “extremely high.” Especially as there are many countries on the American continents where the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which carries the virus, is endemic, as indicated by professor Xavier de Lamballerie, director of the Emergence of Viral Diseases Unit at the University of Aix-Marseille. To protect oneself against these mosquitoes, it is advised to use insect repellant, and wear long pants and long sleeved shirts as of nightfall. And all residents of the island should be sure to get rid of any standing water where mosquitoes could possibly breed. Of note are three soloists who will be performing in recitals on Monday, January 20 and Wednesday, January 22 at 8pm at the Catholic Church in Gustavia: violinist Noah Bendix-Balgley in his festival debut; Phillip Bush, piano; and Robert Langevin, flute. Where else in the world can you hear musicians of this caliber in such an informal, personal setting? Two concerts not to be missed (see schedule for full festival details)… A Noah Bendix-Balgley has been concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since 2011. A laureate of the 2009 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, he also won 3rd prize and a special prize for creativity at the 2008 Long-Thibaud International Competition in Paris. BendixBalgley won the 1st prize at the 2011 Vibrarte International Music Competition in Paris and was awarded 1st Prize and a special prize for best Bach interpretation at the 14th International Violin Competition "Andrea Postacchini" in Fermo, Italy. He has appeared as a soloist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestre National de Belgique, I Pomeriggi Musicale of Milan, Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana (Italy), Orchestre Royal Chambre de Wallonie (Belgium), the Binghamton Philharmonic and the Asheville Symphony (USA). His Pittsburgh debut recital in January 2012 was named the "Best Classical Concert of 2012" by the Pittsburgh PostGazette. Bendix-Balgley has also performed his own version of The Star-Spangled Banner for solo violin in front of 39,000 fans at the Pittsburgh Pirates Opening Day at PNC Park. Bendix-Balgley has performed on North American tour with the Miro String Quartet. From 2008 to 2011, he was the first violinist of the Munich-based Athlos String Quartet, which won a special prize at the 2009 Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Competition in Berlin, and performed throughout Europe. He has performed with artists including Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet, Gary Hoffman, Emanuel Ax, Ralph Kir- shbaum, and percussionist Colin Currie. Bendix-Balgley has appeared at numerous festivals in Europe and North America, including the Verbier Festival, the Sarasota Festival, ChamberFest Cleveland, and Chamber Music Connects the World in Kronberg, Germany. PHILLIP BUSH Phillip Bush is a pianist of uncommon versatility with a repertoire extending from the 16th century to the 21st. His active and unconventional career has taken him to many parts of the globe. Since his New York recital debut at the Metropolitan Museum in 1984, Bush has appeared Weekly 295_Mise en page 1 13/01/14 19:19 Page5 Weekly 295_Mise en page 1 13/01/14 19:19 Page6 6 as recitalist throughout North America, as well as in Europe, Asia and the Caribbean. He made his Carnegie Hall concerto debut in 2001 with the London Sinfonietta to critical acclaim, replacing an ailing Peter Serkin on short notice in concerti by Stravinsky and Alexander Goehr. He has also appeared as soloist with the Osaka Century Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony, Houston Symphony and several other orchestras, in repertoire as far-ranging as the Beethoven concerti and the American premiere of Michael Nyman’s Harpsichord Concerto. A much sought-after chamber St Barth Weekly n°295 musician, Bush has performed and recorded with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, has appeared frequently on New York's Bargemusic series, and has performed at the Grand Canyon Music Festival, Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival, Strings in the Mountains (Colorado), Sitka Music Festival (Alaska), St. Barth Music Festival, Music at Blair Atholl (Scotland), Cape May Music Festival and many other festivals. He has appeared with the Kronos Quartet and the Miami String Quartet and has also performed with members of the Emerson, Guarneri, Tokyo, Orion and St. Lawrence quartets. Between 1991 and 1999, he performed over 250 concerts in Japan with the piano quartet, Typhoon, and recorded five CD's with the group for Epic/Sony, all of which reached the top of the Japanese classical charts. ROBERT LANGEVIN: Robert Langevin : With the start of the 2000–01 season, Langevin joined the New York Philharmonic as principal flute, in The Lila Acheson Wallace Chair. In May 2001, he made his solo debut with the Orchestra in the North American premiere of Siegfried Matthus’s Concerto for Flute and Harp with Philharmonic Principal Harp Nancy Allen and Music Director Kurt Masur. His October 2012 solo performance in Nielsen’s Flute Concerto, conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert, was recorded for inclusion in The Nielsen Project, the Orchestra’s multi- season traversal of all of the Danish composer’s symphonies and concertos, to be released by Dacapo Records. Prior to the Philharmonic, Langevin held the Jackman Pfouts Principal Flute Chair of the Pittsburgh Symphony and was an adjunct professor at Duquesne University, in Pittsburgh. Langevin served as associate principal of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra for 13 years, playing on more than 30 recordings. As a member of Musica Camerata Montreal and l’Ensemble de la Société de Musique Contemporaine du Québec, he premiered many works, including the Canadian premiere of Pierre Boulez’s Le Marteau sans maître. In addition, Langevin has performed as soloist with Quebec’s most distinguished ensembles and has recorded many recitals and chamber music programs for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. He also served on the faculty of the University of Montreal for nine years. She hopes to ride even higher at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in April. or Tessa Thyssen, 2013 was a terrific year, and 2014 could be even better. Crowned with the junior championship title that she won in Vendée last October, the young surfer—a member of the Reefer Surf Club at AJOE in Saint Barth— has her sights set even higher. She hopes to shine during the next ISA World Junior Surfing Championships (International Surfing Association) in Ecuador from April 5-13. F Last year, in Nicaragua, Thyssen was in the under-16 category and finished in ninth place. She was on the French national team, which was awarded fourth place in a competition dominated by Hawaiian surfers. Thyssen will turn 17 on January 25, which means in Ecuador, she will be in the next age group, or under-18. But that does not worry the Reefer Surf Club member, who knows she can count on her strengths. Another important meeting for Thyssen is the world final of the Rip Curl GromSearch in Indonesia in June. She earned her place at this event by winning the European final last fall on the waves in France. Thyssen is in seventh heaven since her boyfriend Timothée Bisso will also be competing in Indonesia in the young men’s class. “I would like to thank everyone who has helped me, and who are going to help me: my sponsors (Coolshoe, Body Glove, Deter bikinis, SeventyOne Percent, Arcade Mfg, et RT Surfboards), my father (David Thyssen), the Reefer Surf Club of AJOE and the Collectivity of Saint Barthélemy for their support. I was hoping that after such good results I would find additional sponsors in Saint Barth but that is not yet the case,” Thyssen. The more the surfer progresses, the busier her Thyssen and Bisso are soon heading to Mexico. “To prepare myself technically, physically, and mentally,” she explains. “And I will be training on my new boards, with the coach from the French team, Yann Martin. I often moved when I was young, and I learned to like to travel. Surfing is the kind of lifestyle I like,” she adds. “I am very happy doing it. And I have just begun…” Michel and his staff are happy to welcome you to their pool-side restaurant for lunch & dinner. Holiday special, in addition to our regular menu.
