Give STL Day aims to inspire and empower the region to engage donors in an effort raise as many unrestricted donations as possible in 24 hours. Beginning at 12:00 AM and ending at 11:59 PM, it was evident that the St. Louis region made a significant impact by supporting local nonprofits, ultimately growing philanthropy. In 24 hours, 13,606 unique donors gave 20,260 donations from their hearts to 790 nonprofits all of which raised over $2.1 million. Give STL Day did not happen overnight. It was an organized, collaborative effort that mobilized our citizens and their networks to respond to a myriad of needs in our community. To achieve this $2 million outcome, the St. Louis Community Foundation and its nonprofit partners kicked off the Give STL Day campaign in February 2015 by to organizing the effort through training, communication and networking opportunities. Giving in our region has been transformed; donors are energized and the funding community is beginning to rethink how it supports the nonprofit sector. This Report to the Community offers lessons learned from Give STL Day 2015 and highlights opportunities to grow regional philanthropy and strengthen the nonprofit sector. Methodology This report analyzed information gleaned from various sources, which include: 1. Quantitative Metrics • Wired Impact, a nonprofit marketing agency, provided a summary of website analytics from Google, showing donor behavior on Give STL Day. The report highlighted areas of success and potential improvement. • Kimbia, Inc. an online giving portal – tells who donated, where they came from, and the number of times they contributed. 2. While St. Louis Community Foundation raised the profile of the campaign and sponsorship dollars, it was up to the nonprofits to drive individual donor giving. Organizers emphasized this importance to nonprofits and encouraged them to test new ideas, methods and communication strategies. Nonprofit Orientation and Training To participate in Give STL Day, nonprofits were required to complete a profile on the website givestlday.org. The St. Louis Community Foundation also provided many opportunities for training, which included one webinar, and six 90-minute, in-person training sessions that covered many topics which included: donor engagement, fundraising, marketing communications and social media. • Nearly 70% of nonprofit participants attended a training session Communications and Social Media To promote their own causes, nonprofits used traditional communications methods and leveraged social media with surprising results. Since Give STL Day is built around a digital platform intended to drive donors to make gifts online, it is no surprise that social media was a crucial element in the giving day campaign. While the majority of organizations are just now beginning to exploit social media, some are well-versed. Give STL Day offered a unique opportunity to many nonprofits to test and broaden their social media engagement. 18% of donors heard about the Give STL Day through Facebook or Twitter Facebook was the #1 social media referral source to givestlday.org on May 5 with 83.59% of traffic St. Louis Community Foundation | 2015 Give STL Day Report 6 Give STL Day 2015 Give Local America: The St. Louis Region vs. Rest of Nation Led by Kimbia, Give Local America, a national campaign, included over 100 community foundations in a national Day of Giving on May 5th and collectively raised a total of $68 million, enlisted 9,000 nonprofits and engaged 300,000 donors throughout the country. How did the St. Louis region stack up? Here are the numbers: • Give STL Day ranked #9 nationwide for the most dollars raised. (Ranked #12 in 2014). • Give STL Day ranked #6 based on the number of gifts donated. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th most $ raised # of gifts donated Significant Takeaways Several themes emerged concerning the nonprofit experience. • Regional pride: Give STL Day was a source of pride for our community. From board members to first time donors, those 24 hours struck a chord that reverberated across the region – a feeling of connection. Everyone wanted to join in Give STL Day, everyone wanted to give, and everyone wanted to tell others about their participation. • May 5th was just the beginning: While the period leading up to and including May 5th was intense, many nonprofits realized that Give STL Day was just the start of something greater – an enhanced social media presence, a renewed and focused sense of mission and board engagement, and a recognition that better communications and marketing efforts were needed. • Board engagement was key: Nonprofit boards hold many responsibilities, including that of fundraising. Give STL Day offered an easy way for board members to give their own personal gift and to satisfy organization’s ‘give and get’ policies. • Small is big: Sometimes small nonprofits are hindered by the perception that size matters. On Give STL Day, small organizations were successful, by leaps and bounds, and played a pivotal role in the day’s overall success. St. Louis Community Foundation | 2015 Give STL Day Report 7 Give STL Day 2015 Marketing Support Our marketing objectives centered on creating broad awareness of Give STL Day in order to reach the donor community and invite new givers. A combination of paid and pro-bono advertising, expansive local media coverage, and social media efforts helped capture the imagination of the community and inspire unprecedented generosity. With this baseline of awareness, it was up to the nonprofits to bring home the message of why donors should give to them. For paid media coverage, the St. Louis Community Foundation had a total budget of nearly $60,000. Media partners included: • The St. Louis Business Journal • KMOV News Channel 4 • St. Louis Magazine • St. Louis American Earned media coverage included interviews or news coverage in the following: • KMOX-Radio • Y-98 • KMOV-TV • KSDK • KTVI-TV • CityTV • Radio Arts Foundation St. Louis • St. Louis Post-Dispatch St. Louis Community Foundation | 2015 Give STL Day Report 8 Give STL Day 2015 Lessons Learned and Future Needs Throughout the process, lessons were learned, which included the following: • Make everything “open source” and available on the website for nonprofits. • Don’t skimp on training. • Offer more general social media training in advance of the Give Day training. • You cannot over-communicate to nonprofits. • You can over-communicate to donors. • Partnerships are the key to success. Open Source “Open source” refers to the importance of making sure all materials, images, videos, tools and ideas for promotion are housed on the Give Day website. It is amazing how creative nonprofits are when they are given the right tools to tailor and customize their promotional materials. Don’t be afraid to let go of control! Training You cannot over-prepare for a successful Give Day. Webinars and in-person training at locations throughout the region, as well as social media training sessions, proved to be an important factor in Give STL Day’s success. Communication to Nonprofits There is no way to over-communicate about the logistics of Gve STL Day. While appearing at times redundant, remember there are a lot of groups that have never participated in a Give Day. Making sure that everyone is on the same page and operating with the same set of rules and instructions is vital. Communication to Donors There is a way for nonprofits to over-communicate to their donors. When a donor makes a donation, nonprofits should thank them and not send too many additional messages asking for donations. All communication to donors should be strategic and timely. Partnerships Partnerships are the key to success. We needed to get the entire metro region excited about Give STL Day. It was important to have a number of allies who were communicating, supporting, posting, tweeting and cheerleading for this initiative. All the paid advertising in the world could not generate the same kind of grassroots, viral enthusiasm that came from engaging the right set of community groups that touch a host of nonprofits on a daily basis. The partnerships that were formed are trusted friends who helped give credibility to this event. (See our list of partners on page 10). Finally, don’t forget the success of Give STL Day does not solely rest on the amount of money raised. In St. Louis we raised a total of $120,500 in prize and incentive dollars. Those dollars primed the pump to excite groups about winning, but this was far from the only incentive to participate. The real payoff comes from the skills the nonprofits develop around social media, marketing, messaging and reaching new audiences. St. Louis Community Foundation | 2015 Give STL Day Report 9 Give STL Day 2015 Communication Partners Our communication partners were instrumental in helping us get the word out and keep nonprofits informed about important updates related to Give STL Day. Combined, the number of emails sent to nonprofits region-wide totaled nearly 10,000 in one day alone thanks to the support of the following: • Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) • Community Service Public Relations Council (CSPRC) • Nonprofit Missouri • The Grants and Foundation Center at the St. Louis Public Library • The Nonprofit Services Center (NSC) • The Rome Group • United Way of Greater St. Louis Sponsors Without the financial support of donors, we wouldn’t have had such a remarkable event.
