T
he vintage hot air balloon sails peacefully
over a paper-pieced landscape of picturesque
rivers and hills, a die-cut gift bag forming
the frame of this unique card. The scene is easily
folded up into a cute little carry case decorated with
elements echoing the charming scenery inside.
To create the illusion of depth and distance in the
landscape, I used aerial perspective – the principle
that objects further away are paler with a bluer
tinge than items close to hand. The soft grey hills
and distant trees in the background thus provide
a subtle backdrop for the vibrant colours of the
balloon and its passenger and help make them the
focus of the card.
This project is the perfect opportunity for dusting
off your Xcut A4 Xpress Die-cutting Machine, with
plenty of scope for adding all those die-cut details
that make handcrafted cards so special. Decorate
the hedgerows with punched paper flowers or
stamped animals, embellish the babbling brook
with pebble charms, water lilies and lily pads, or fill
the sky with flocks of tiny die-cut birds. Don’t hold
back but make this card unique and individual.

f you want a thoroughly modern feel for
your project then turning to geometric
shapes can be the perfect choice when
putting together your design and can also be
great inspiration for those sometimes tricky
male-themed cards.
The simplicity of geometric shapes such
as circles, squares, hexagons and diamonds,
makes them easy to replicate to either soften
a potentially harsh pattern, or conversely,
to reinforce a design that is pleasing to the

eye. There are plenty of products available
featuring geometric patterns; papers, punches
embossing folders and dies, many of which are
nesting, but don’t forget the humble craft knife
for creating your own shapes.
However, geometric designs don’t have to
be completely modern - achieve a vintage look
and soften the edges by blending dye ink on
the paper elements and add a little texture with
jute string. This shabby chic card incorporates
an innovative paper quilting technique,
absolutely perfect for making the most of
both sides of the double-sided Nature’s Gallery
papers, to make a lovely, 3D patchwork effect.

THE STORY… BEHIND KERRY’S ‘BIRDS OF A FEATHER’ LAYOUT
watercolour background and adding some splats
of colour too. When there are so many colours
in the photo it’s difficult to decide which colours
to choose for the papers, I always find it easier
to pick just two or three colours from the photo
and base my layout around those. I had already
decided to use the dark plum die-cut with the
quote for my title so I simply added the gorgeous
orange and teal papers to the mix.
TIP Adding a border around the edge of a layout
keeps the eye focussed inwards on the page.

Project by Kerry Bruce
The photo that I used and the Papermania Owl
Folk papers couldn’t have been a more perfect
match. I saw the ‘Birds of a feather flock together’
quote on one of the die-cuts and knew I had
to use the photo of my crafty friends and me
wearing feather boas. We were all at a weekend
crop so we got the photo printed and challenged
each other to make a layout with it. The fussy
cut feathers down the left side looked plain on
their own so I decided to have a bit of fun with
the Artiste Watercolour Dual Tip Pens, making a
