New Annapolitans News November 2012 www.Annapolitans.org New Annapolitans P.O. Box 5251 Annapolis, MD 21403-0700 410-216-6000 GENERAL MEETING: Wednesday, November 7, 2012 PROGRAM: Magic! WHERE: Unitarian Universalist Church, 333 Dubois Rd., Annapolis WHEN: Social time at 9:30-10 a.m.* Meeting at 10 a.m. followed by the program Optional lunch: The Green Turtle 177 Jennifer Road, Annapolis *Prospective members are invited to check in with the VP-Membership at 9:15 a.m. General meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month except February, July and August. . PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: Charlotte Featherstone (410-280-5173) [email protected] Good bad news: Our financial reserves are too large. Why? Our costs for printing and mailing the newsletter have plummeted as more and more of us receive the newsletters by email instead of snail mail. Extra money has accumulated in our treasury, “stored” in our reserves. Our accountant says we should cut those reserves to stay within IRS guidelines. Great news: We need to spend the money. So we’re going to do so in ways that all members can enjoy, spreading the wealth as best we can. For starters, we’re planning extra-special 2013 Birthday and President’s luncheons, splurging a bit on both, and holding them at venues that can accommodate expected higher attendance. Luncheon attendees will pay only $15 for events worth much more (the “more” funded out of the extra reserve funds). Mark your calendar now for the Friday, February 15 Birthday Luncheon, and stay tuned for more details. We’ll also get members who are forever bringing food to our general meetings -- you know who you are -- out of the kitchen! We’ll instead purchase food for our December and March general meetings. We’ll also give our Big Sisters, who do so much to sustain the welcoming essence of our club, a break by providing food for a Newcomers’ event. That’s our start. Your board’s plan is to make a big dent in the extra reserve funds this 2012-13 year and to polish them off next year (2013-14). Be assured that we’ll still have plenty of reserves for the future ($18,000 to $20,000 is recommended for an organization like ours). Plus, with emailed newsletter participation still trending upward, we can anticipate building at least some of these splurge items into our routine budgets. Won’t that be nice? Charlotte Featherstone 1 BOARD INFORMATION 1st VICE PRESIDENT-NEWCOMERS Linda Russell 845-558-2969) [email protected] Happy November to our Newcomers! This wonderful month, which is New Member marked by giving Coffee thanks and 10 a.m. sharing, is the perfect Nov. 29 time to gather for New Annapolitans’ monthly Newcomer coffee. Our organization was formed to welcome newcomers to the Annapolis area. We are eager for you to meet other New Annapolitans and to learn about the many activities and opportunities that are available. Each newcomer is assigned a “Big Sister” mentor as a supporting contact point. Members also may attend Newcomer events for a full year after joining. This group usually meets monthly on the third Thursday (fourth Thursday this month because of Thanksgiving), but the times vary. Our next coffee will be hosted by Ginny Sattler at 10 a.m. on November 29. More detailed information will follow. Please contact Linda Russell if you have any questions or would like to become a “Big Sister” for a newcomer. 2nd VICE PRESIDENT-PROGRAMS Meg Rhian (410-268-5499) [email protected] We will begin the holiday season with The Amazing Steven, a magician from Philip and Henry Productions, at the November 7 General Meeting. This fast-paced program by a professional entertainer with 20 years of experience promises to be especially entertaining! The optional lunch after the program will be at The Green Turtle, 177 Jennifer Road, Annapolis (in the Restaurant Park, Annapolis Mall). The cost is $20 payable in cash when you sign up in the church's lobby prior to the General Meeting. Included are your choice of several entrees, dessert, beverage, tax and gratuity. NOTE: The websites that were referenced by our speaker at the October 3 General Meeting are: www.becomeyourownhealthcareadvocate.com and www.free-family-medical-history-form.com. 3rd VICE PRESIDENT-MEMBERSHIP Norma Farrell (410-573-5323) [email protected] As of October 6, New Annapolitans has 556 members, with 68 percent of members receiving the newsletters by email. Thanks to each and every one of these members for saving trees and helping to ease the workload of sending the monthly mailings. We will accept membership renewals until the end of this calendar year. If you wish to renew now that the July 1 deadline has passed, please note payments must include late fees (a $10 reinstatement fee plus a $5-permonth fine for July and each subsequent month), so the amount due is: $60 in October $65 in November $70 in December After December 31, renewals are not accepted. Members are not eligible to rejoin after December 31 of the year their membership lapses. If the stars were in alignment, the printing presses well oiled and the postal carriers at the ready, you should have received the 2012-2013 NA Membership Directory and Bylaws by now. If you have not received the mailing by late October, please send me an email. 4th VICE PRESIDENT-INTEREST GROUPS Ellen Todd (410-280-1607) [email protected] Do you like to read? NA does not qualify for tax deductible contributions of any kind. The New Annapolitans Community Outreach Interest Group supports selected charities. Currently we are playing on Monday mornings; time and place vary according to the weather, so you must be on the email list in order to keep current with the schedule. Please email your contact information or questions to Jo Ann Cesari. There is no commitment, no levels, no fees, no obligations -- just a fun group of women getting some outdoor exercise on area tennis courts. If Mondays are not ideal for you, you might meet other tennis players who would rather play on another day. Give us a try! WOMEN ON WATER (WOW) Rebecca Snure (410-919-8617) [email protected] Susan Veccia (410-777-5428) [email protected] Women on Water is a group of savvy sailors who get together for fun day sails, primarily during the week. We sail based on the availability of boats and skippers as well 9 as wind and sea conditions. If you have a sailboat, we would welcome you as a WOW skipper; if you are an experienced sailor, join us as crew. Although we are always working to improve our sailing skills, we do not provide sailing instruction and are therefore unable to take inexperienced sailors. We sail in the fall, spring and summer, and our activities are announced via our email list. Contact Rebecca or Susan for more information.
