Photo By: Bruce Herrington UNSERE GEDANKEN P r e s i d e n t ’ s R e p o r t BY: BRUCE HERRINGTON This issue is largely devoted to one of our outstanding members, Mike Richman, who passed away on July 7th, after many years of onagain-offagain struggle with cancer. As you will read, he was a great all-round guy. Personable, generous, managerially astute, and hard working for the club. Many of us will miss him personally. We will all miss his subtle influences for improving the club. The PCA National website has been undergoing 'continuous improvement' recently. It now provides a capability for each member to update his/her personal data (address and phone numbers, etc) as well as enter ALL Porsches owned. These data are important to the club in enabling us to serve you better, and are not released outside the club. Please take the time to update your data as needed. For assistance contact either me or our Webmeister. To make your own changes, go to http:www.pca.org and log in. If you don't have an account, you can create one from information e-mailed to you from PCA National, OR use as a "username": your first initial, lastname, last four digits of your PCA number, all entered with no spaces. For 'password" enter: PCA followed by the last four digits of your PCA number, all entered with no spaces. (For further information on logging in, at the bottom of the 'red' bar at the bottom of the screen, click on the "read this".) Once you are logged in, your 'welcome screen' will have an entry "GO view and update your PCA record, cars, and more!". Click on the underlined part and enter the data as appropriate. Please keep addresses (mail and e-mail) up to date, and please, please enter the pertinent data for all your Porsches. When the data are entered on the PCA website, they show up in our membership records. By sorting through the car records we can get people with like cars together. This could make it feasible for RSR to stage special events for, all the 356ers, or the 912 folks, or what 2 ever. Currently we know about only the car that was entered on the (sometimes very old) membership application. It is particularly important to update the phone number, especially for those involved in the 909 - 951 transition.. Porsche once again topped J.D. Power's annual survey that measures performance, layout appeal and customer satisfaction with cars three months after they were driven off the dealers' lots. Porsche leads in all areas that matter most in the study including exterior styling, driving dynamics, and engine and transmission. The brand was helped by its quality, which ranked No. 1. Ford Motor Co.'s Lincoln brand was ranked 11th, highest among the domestic nameplates, and two Ford cars were the best in their classes. The Ventura Show is coming up September 9th and 10th. This event is the largest gathering of Porsches, most people will ever see. Lots of vendor booths provide as much interest as the cars - old and new. Santa Barbara Region's Zone 8 Concours on the 10th is part of this weekend event. Our September dinner will be special. It will be on September 14th, at the Cedar Creek Inn in Palm Springs. A special guest speaker will tell us about progress on the Palm Springs Race Track and other car related issues. It should be a very interesting meeting, especially for the Coachella Valley members and the die-hard autocrossers from throughout the region. A special treat for Riversiders is the invitation extended to us by Grand Prix Region to join them on Sept 30 for special tours of the Pond Collection and the Palm Springs Air Museum. Those who missed the tour arranged by Orange Coast Region now get a second chance. I for one, am looking forward to doing a second round. See flyer on pg. 13 for details. 3 UNSERE GEDANKEN NITE AUTOCROSS 2nd Annual RSR Night Autocross Sets Records Photo by Jess Lopatynski Riverside Region once again made the record books with a night Autocross. This time we had as a competitor, a Zone Rep from outside the zone! Henry Hoehn, the PCA Zone 1 Representative combined a business trip with our Autocross and competed in a rental car. An even more awesome first was that the Porsche 928 that wonits class was driven by a paraplegic! Yes, this competitor without the use of his legs, usinghand controls only, beat even a 928 driven conventionally. Perhaps the most Guinnessworthy event was that a spectator, got so wrapped up in trying to participate, that he popped for Pizza for everyone, using a laptop computer to find the local Pappa Joe's and placean order for delivery to the track! I keep saying that all of you who missed a RSR event REALLY missed a great time, and that goes in spades for our night autocrosses. Competition Update A periodic list of achievements by Riverside Region members in region and Zone 8 competitive events, compiled by Dave Yerzley SDR Z8 Autocross, July 15 Riverside region members took home three trophies: Patricia Lynn Taylor - First in Class - FIL (1969 911T) Rod Taylor - First in Class - FI (1969 911T) Dave Yerzley - First in Class - FP (1971 911E) CCCR Z8 Concours, July 16 Riverside member Rob Chamblin took home the Best of Show - Full Concours trophy (modified 1980 911SC). 4 Robert Chamblin with trophy. Jerry Ragovoy BY: JIM BURKE George "Mike" Richman started moving the family's delivery trucks around the Swiss Dairy back lot long before he had a permit to drive the family sedan. It's likely that when the Beach Boys first sang 'Get Around' on the radio Mike was gettin' around the local route in a Swiss Dairy home delivery rig. Mike took special pride in the dairy's productivity, cleanliness and methods. When Mike became involved full-time in the Swiss Dairy after graduating from CalPoly San Luis Obispo, he buckled down and learned the operation in detail. The old plant ran well, but could do better. Mike was able to increase production enough to realistically bid a government contract to supply China Lake with milk. They won the business and everyone hustled to load the big new delivery trailers that beat a path from Corona to Ridgecrest. More increases in production along with in-house extrusion of plastic milk containers allowed the Dairy to survive the demise of home delivery and thrive in the era of supermarkets. The ability to make mass deliveries of wholesome dairy products attracted the attention of the country's leading marketers and 8 eventually put Swiss Dairy products in the refrigerator case of Price Club. Production was up 500% from Mike's first day on the job. The Price Club relationship lead to a bigger contract with Costco. Eventually the buyers from Albertson's came and, like Price Club, found a supplier they really liked. Business was good but Michele's health was slipping and the prognosis called for an extended period of rest and recovery. Mike, his brother and mother took stock of the situation, both personal and professional, and accepted an offer to sell the business lock, stock and barrel. That was when the doctors determined Michele's kidneys were beyond repair and a donor must be found. In a rare, but poignant case, Mike was an acceptable donor for his wife's operation. After a lifetime of personally directing affairs to promote his family's welfare, Mike would now release the reins, go under anesthesia and let the doctors work for his family's welfare. The glow in Michele's smile and the sparkle in her eye are there because of the doctors' success, but their brilliance can rightly be traced to those ingredients contributed by Mike. AUGUST 2006 What does an overachiever do when he's not on the clock? Mike's personal interests had sat on the back burner since the day he walked out of Cal Poly. He always liked fishing and fast cars, building hotrods with his brother while still in High School. But fishing was something he and his brother could do with customers or on an occasional family weekend outing. There were boats and crews in La Paz and Mike knew who the good ones were. He knew the bad ones too, but that's not something to brag about. Mike found a yellow Mangusta in the early 70s. These cars were built in small quantities (~400) by Ghia in Turin for De Tomaso between 67 and 70. Mike joined the Riverside Foreign Car Club in '73 and campaigned his Mangusta in their Slaloms and Rallys. Mike's skill at pushing the Mangusta to its limits improved with every outing. Eventually the inevitable happened. Mike was struck with the need for more power! A power tuner was needed and Mike began his quest to separate the good ones from the bad ones. The job of overhauling the Ford 302 ci engine went to Don Kravig. Don incorporated the factory's updates and selected from his marine and Porsche bags of tricks to create a uniquely potent Mangusta for Mike. The mangusta (mongoose), by the way, is the only animal feared by the cobra. There must have been some more fishing going on during this time because Mike came to make the acquaintance of a fellow fisherman, Walter Keinle. Walter runs the Porsche dealership in Riverside and fished out of La Paz. All the years Mike was campaigning his Mangusta, he commuted about in a Ford. It would be years before that Ford was finally retired. But when it went Mike began his quest for the ideal personal transportation. A procession of Corvettes, BMWs and Mercedes all vied for the precious few spots in the Richman garage. Walter may have been amused by all this, but decided the time was right to have Mike’s Soap Box Racer 9 UNSERE GEDANKEN U N S E R E G E D A N K E N Riverside Region, Porsche Club of America RIVERSIDE REGIONAL OFFICERS RIVERSIDE COMMITTEE CHAIRS PCA ZONE 8 OFFICERS: PRESIDENT Bruce Herrington (760) 363-0041 PO Box 761 Morongo Valley, CA 92256 [email protected] VICE-PRESIDENT Vice-President Jim Burke (951) 681-6929 5387 Camino Real Riverside, CA 92509 [email protected] SECRETARY Jess Lopatynski (951) 788-8111 2099 Elsinore Rd, Riverside, CA 92506 [email protected] TREASURER Brent Selinger (951) 767-1544 42120 Selinger Trail Aguanga, CA 92536 [email protected] DIRECTORS Robert Chamblin (951) 924-5710 23510 Blooming Meadow Rd. Story By Bruce Herrington Photo by JaLynn Manser With Leis around their necks and Hawaiian music playing, some lucky Riversiders were transported to Hawaii, courtesy of Clive and JaLynn Manser. On Saturday, 15 July the Manser back yard in Corona became 'a little bit of Hawaii' for the evening. Lots of fruit, roast pork, rice and egg rolls, and a wide selection of beverages kept everyone going through hours of conversation. Comfortable chairmade a more than adequate substitute for sand to sit on. Eventually, as the food settled and the shadows deepened, the example set by the Manser kids was too much to resist and it was all hands into the pool. Swiming, diving and just soaking, was the perfect way to wind down from another great Riverside food/social event. R i v e r s i d e r s w i t h G e t W i n e H i g h Story and Photo By Bruce Herrington On Saturday July 22nd, about 15 Riversiders made an assent of the San Bernardino Mountains, for a wine tasting event at the home of John and Dorothy Starner. A brief summer shower served to remind the lo-landers (especially those from the desert) that Lake Arrowhead is a different world. The wine tasting format was different too, with each participant being issued two glasses so that two wines at a time could be compared, sip by sip. Reds and whites, and scrumptious snacks were separated into different parts of the house so that folks could wander around and socialize with different groups of people. Results were interesting with some finding it hard to distinguish between two wines others thought were vastly different. It was also demonstrated that two externally identical bottles could indeed contain wine of differing 12 flavor. Continuing RSR's Wet July theme, after studying the cars in the basement, the hardiest Riversiders enjoyed a cruise around Lake Arrowhead, conducted and comprehensively narrated by John Starner. AUGUST 2006 13 UNSERE GEDANKEN Mike with Michelle’s Cab Mike test drive one of his Porsches. Michele traded-in her car for an Arena Red '99 996 cabriolet. It passed muster and was soon at Don Kravig's shop to find a little more power. Mike liked these Porsche cars. He and Walter perused the specifications for the '01 Turbo models and Mike placed an order. By now, an eagle eyed PCA member, Gerry Giordano, had spotted the sporty Cab and invited its owners to a social gathering of the Riverside Porsche Club. Mike and Michele became regulars at most of our events and took a special interest in driving events. Imagine that! Mike was a regular at the Riverside Region autocross scene with Michele occasionally driving her Cabriolet. Mike passed away July 7, 2006 after a long battle with cancer. His son, looking us in the eye at the celebration, told us we were lucky for the time we spent with Mike. Those words rang true. Mike's time was his gift to us. Mike, thank you for your grit, your integrity, your sincerity and forever; thank you for your time. 14 “So what did you learn to drive in?” The very rare Mangusta.
