A Winning Legacy
Hideo “Pops” Yoshimura and his namesake company are legendary in
the world of motorcycle racing. Pops’ story begins in Japan, where he
established his personal reputation working on the BSAs and Triumphs
of servicemen stationed there. In 1954 Pops took his ambition to the next
level, launching the company Yoshimura in Japan and quickly becoming
renowned for giving his customers the competitive edge they craved.
With success in Japan as his foundation, Pops set a new goal: racing
in America’s Daytona 200. The next step toward achieving his dream
was to open Yoshimura Research and Development of America, Inc.,
which he did in 1971 in North Hollywood, California. In 1976, the AMA
established the official Superbike series with its first event at — of
course — Daytona. Yoshimura took on the competition with a young
Kawasaki rider named Wes Cooley. Wes finished fourth at Daytona
that inaugural year, and in 1977 Yoshimura and Cooley followed with a
third-place podium finish.
Then came the breakthrough year of 1978. Yoshimura made a historic
switch by forming a business relationship with Suzuki. Yoshimura had
been able to breathe fire into the Kawasaki, but with Suzuki he had the
chance to work with a bike that handled. Results were instantaneous:
Steve McLaughlin on a Yoshimura- built GS1000 won the Daytona Superbike race for Yoshimura and Suzuki. Proving the win was hardly a
fluke, Team Yoshimura racers Ron Pierce, Wes Cooley and Dave Emde
finished 1-2-3 at Daytona in 1979. From 1978 through 1981, Yoshimura
and Suzuki won four straight Daytona Superbike races, with Cooley
winning the 1979 and 1980 AMA Superbike titles as icing on the cake.
In 1981, Pops went back home to Japan, while his son Fujio Yoshimura
stayed in America to take Yoshimura R&D of America to the next level.
When Pops retired, Fujio headed home to run Yoshimura Japan. In his
place, Suehiro Watanabe (“Nabe”) became the head of Yoshimura R&D
of America. In 2005, Nabe decided to focus on the Research and Development operations of Yoshimura, and Don Sakakura became the head
of Yoshimura R&D America. Today, Don also oversees the day-to-day
operation of the Yoshimura Suzuki Road Race Team, Team Yoshimura
Suzuki’s motocross and supercross team and the company’s collaboration with Factory Honda Racing and GEICO Honda Racing.
To bring Pops’ story full circle, he came out for Daytona every year after
his retirement. In his later years, Pops enjoyed his accomplishments –
and he never lost the passion to win. Pops passed away in 1995, leaving
a legacy that will live on in the history of Superbike racing.

Unrivaled Research and Development
Yoshimura is renowned for its research and development. But producing the finest exhaust systems in the
world requires more than a big R&D department. Yoshimura is the leading manufacturer of exhaust
systems because our commitment to R&D is matched by our dedication to uncompromising quality
standards and our expertise in manufacturing pipes that meet those standards.
From the company’s beginning, we’ve understood that cutting-edge research and development sets Yoshimura apart from the competition. That’s why we built a completely separate
facility dedicated only to R&D. Creating an environment where everyone is focused on a
single mission allows our talented technicians to develop improved designs while continually raising the bar on product quality. The Yoshimura motto is simple and has not changed
since the company’s inception: Make the best parts possible, and never compromise.
Actually producing exhaust pipes that meet our quality standards is no
simple task, but our manufacturing group consistently pulls it off. The
attention to detail and old-world craftsmanship that goes into making
Yoshimura products is impossible to replicate with a machine. The
technicians at work here are artists — the exhaust systems they
produce are pieces of art. All of this talent, tools and raw metal
come together to form the best exhaust systems in the world.

Yoshimura Global Road Racing Programs
Both Yoshimura Japan and Yoshimura Research and Development of America, Inc. have a long and successful
history of collaborating with championship-winning road racing teams. The individuals who form the heart and
soul of both of our companies are passionate about creating world-class products that take racing machines
to the next level of performance, and our dedication is apparent in a long string of Yoshimura-backed riders
standing on top of the podium.
Yoshimura Japan has an extensive research and development program and is heavily involved with supporting teams around the world, which is one critical way that we use on-track experience to develop
cutting-edge technology. This year, Yoshimura Japan is building racing engines and providing high performance
exhaust systems for the FIXI Crescent Suzuki racing team and its Suzuki GSX-R1000 as it pursues the World
Superbike Championship.
For decades Yoshimura R&D has been involved with road racing in America, partnering with the leading motorcycle manufacturers and sponsoring the most talented riders. Yoshimura R&D currently runs the Yoshimura
Suzuki Racing Team, supporting the factory team effort in the AMA Pro Superbike Championship Series and
collaborating with Yoshimura Japan to build engines and exhaust systems. Yoshimura Suzuki’s road racing
success is legendary, with Yoshimura leading the factory Suzuki Superbike team to 10 championships in the last
13 AMA Superbike Series. As always, the knowledge gained in the heat of competition has helped us to develop
high-performance products for both road racers and street riders.
Globally, Yoshimura also supports a variety of racing teams with high-performance exhaust systems, including
the World Endurance Championship-winning Suzuki Endurance Racing Team and Team Suzuki’s Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix riders.

Street & Road Race Research and Development
Yoshimura has dedicated countless hours of R&D matched by extensive testing to develop EPA
noise-compliant slip-on exhaust systems. Moreover, every one of these mufflers features the craftsmanship, attention to detail and high quality that Yoshimura has prided itself on for over 55 years.
Yoshimura Exhausts
There are many ways to increase the performance of a sport bike, but the best and most effective
way is by increasing the efficiency of the engine’s exhaust system. In fact, the engine’s ability to
produce power is directly proportional to how quickly it can expel spent gases.
Over the last five decades, Yoshimura has invested millions of dollars in R&D and manufacturing
equipment to ensure that we’re on the cutting edge of exhaust system technology — matching
motorcycle engine advances stride for stride. Where tubes used to be cut with hacksaws and
bent by hand over a torch, we now have CNC cut-off saws to accurately cut pipes to length while
multi-level CNC tube benders shape pipes to exact specifications.
Despite these advances, including the use of computer-controlled robot welding machines,
we’ve remained true to our commitment to weld our pipes by hand. Our racing and R&D groups
combine science and art — including hand-crafted design and manufacturing— to extract a
level of performance from our exhaust systems that simply cannot be rivaled by any high-tech
gadget or tool in the world.
At Yoshimura, we make replacement parts available for those times when some repairs are in order.
Just call one of our Sales Techs with what you need. Sales Department: 1-800-634-9166.
Yoshimura Slip-On and Full Systems
More than 55 years after the introduction of Yoshimura’s Racing Full Exhaust Systems,
we continue to build succeeding generations of exhaust systems that provide unparalleled power, performance and quality.
The full systems are designed with nothing but power in mind. Our knowledgeable R&D
technicians use their years of experience and expertise to make truly remarkable pipes.
In addition, we have more pipe-bending tooling than any company in the business,
allowing us to create the best systems available — period.
Slip-Ons are designed to utilize the stock OEM header. Depending on applications
slip-ons are available as a bolt-on directly to the flange of the OE tail pipe, or with a
yoshimura tail pipe to mount the collector of the OE header.
Our list of innovations is long and growing, highlighting the fact that some companies
are just discovering certain manufacturing techniques and technology we’ve been
perfecting for 35 years, such as our duplex systems. Compare Yoshimura exhaust
systems to the competition and you’ll see there’s simply no match for their quality
and attention to detail, which gives you confidence that you’re going to get a perfect
fit and outstanding performance.

Yoshimura Global Off-Road Racing Programs
Yoshimura understands the dynamics of creating race-winning teams like no one else. First comes research
and development. Then testing — and re-testing. Then the final phase — measuring the result against the
toughest competition in the world. With decades of involvement in championship-winning racing efforts,
Yoshimura begins every year with an almost unfair advantage — a foundation of success that allows us to
start with a built-in lead on the competition.
For 2013, Yoshimura is involved with off-road racing worldwide. In the U.S., Yoshimura is heavily involved with
several teams as they compete in both the AMA Pro Motocross and Supercross series. President of Yoshimura
Racing Don Sakakura heads Team Yoshimura Suzuki’s motocross and supercross efforts, which includes Suzuki
Racing Advisor Ricky Carmichael and multi-championship winning rider James Stewart. Yoshimura is also
backing RCH Racing in the AMA series, providing engines and a range of factory Suzuki parts for the RM-Z450.
Building on our 2012 success with Honda, Yoshimura is supporting the GEICO Honda team by providing the
championship-proven RS-4 exhaust systems for the CRF250R along with a wide variety of
performance hard parts. Yoshimura is also continuing to back Team Honda Muscle Milk
with equipment for its CRF450R. This year — 2013 — marks Yoshimura’s sixth year as the
Official Performance Exhaust Supplier for American Honda Racing, a partnership that has
resulted in incredible success on the track and paid dividends in researching and developing new products. A perfect example of our collaboration is introduction of the all-new
RS-9 Dual system developed for the CRF450R.
Outside of the U.S., the Serco Motorsports Factory Yamaha race
team is ready to take on the competition in the Australian Pro
Lites Championship series. Also in Australia, the Factory Suzuki
Supercross and Motocross teams are primed for another year of
competition. In Brazil, Yoshimura is allied with Factory Yamaha

Aluminum Racing Roof
Spending all day in your SXS is a blast! But the sun and environment can eventually take their toll
on even the best of drivers. We designed our Aluminum Racing Roof to provide maximum protection
from the sun, keeping in-car temperatures more pleasant for driver and passenger. Aluminum keeps
the weight down, but sturdy enough for the harshest of conditions.
RZR XP900
Radiator Roost Guard
The Radiator Roost Guard was one of the first products we developed
for the RZR XP. Protecting your radiator and maintaining coolant temperatures is important in all aspects of driving. While racing, we found a
lot of mud and debris accumulated on the radiator causing undesirable
temperatures. The Radiator Roost Guard deflect debris off to the side
allowing your radiator to remain clear and do it’s job. This is a great alternative to spending hundreds more on a radiator relocation kit.
Aluminum Wind Deflector
The Aluminum Wind Deflector provides even more comfort for all day excursions. By deflecting air
upward from the front of the car, it reduces turbulence and helmet buffeting, allowing the driver to
remain focused and less fatigued. The deflector also limits the amount of dirt, mud, and debris hitting
the occupants while racing or trailing others off-road.
RZR XP 900
Carbon Fiber Intake Scoops
The stock RZR XP 900 intake panels are adequate, but we needed
something better. We designed these Air Scoops to fit over the stock
intake ports, providing maximum air-flow to the engine. They are not
only extremely functional, but lightweight and styled to compliment
the RZR’s sharp lines.
Roost Guards
These Roost Guards protect vital components under the front cowling, especially the Oil Cooler and
Brake Master Cylinder. We discovered a lot of dirt and debris gets kicked up into these areas while turning. Protecting these components and maintaining oil temperatures is important in all aspects of driving.
Roost Guards deflect debris, protecting your Oil Cooler and Brake System from serious damage.

Carbon Fiber Mirror Kit
While most of our R&D focuses on maximizing performance, we’re also
concerned about safety. The more we ran our RZR at the track and offroad, the more we desired mirrors. This kit is simple to install and the
convex mirror provides much needed vision behind you. Similar to our
air scoops, they feature lightweight carbon/aluminum construction and
styled for the RZR Series.

IN-HOUSE ENGINE SERVICES
This is the way to go if you are serious about winning. Once your suspension is dialed
in, and you are pretty well sorted out with your bike, it’s time to look at adding some
more power. Starts are everything in racing.
At Yoshimura, we have been building four-stroke racing engines for over 50 years. We
understand that your engine is the sum of many parts. We do not simply throw a big
cam in, pop up the compression, and create a time bomb. Depending on which stage
of engine modification you choose, we build power at self-sustaining, balanced levels.

ATV & Off-Road Engine Kits
If you want to win, you’ll need the best engine performance you
can get. Yoshimura offers three basic levels of engine performance upgrades.
Stage 1
Stage 1 is the basic hop-up that best fits the average racer. This
is the correct choice if you are racing in the C or B class (beginner or novice). Stage 1 has excellent reliability yet gives the
racer a healthy dose of power when used in conjunction with a
Yoshimura pipe.
Stage 2
Stage 2 is for the racer who is a top contender in the intermediate or B class. The compression is upped, the head modified,
and a Yoshimura billet cam tops off the Stage 2 list. The increase
in compression will require more maintenance, but all in all, the
Stage 2 engine kit provides a very strong yet reliable engine.
Stage 2A is a completely assembled engine.
Stage 3
Stage 3 is a full-tilt racing engine featuring big horsepower
gains. This is the choice for a serious amateur or pro rider who
is looking to win and will accept nothing less than the best.
Every part of a Stage 3 engine is manicured or modified; even
the gear sets and internal transmission parts are polished and
matched using our in-house Yoshimura Isotropic Surface Finish
Process. Stage 3 is a completely assembled engine.
Camshafts
Yoshimura has been making high-end
camshafts for more than 50 years.
We started out designing Superbike
camshafts, but have since expanded the
line of camshafts to include motocross
motorcycles and ATVs. Yoshimura’s
expertise and years of experience in
building the best camshafts in the
business is legendary. All Yoshimura
camshafts are constructed from onepiece billet or blanks, not re-grind. As a
result, our cams not only perform at the
highest level possible, but they are also
extremely durable.
BEFORE
AFTER
ISF Process
ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
Yoshimura has been a leadership company in EFI management for
years. By the time all these other guys figure out what we already
know - the race will be over. Check out our race proven PIM2
units for off-road racing applications, and our Em Pro for road
racing applications. They have a long track record of performance, durability, and ease of use.
Yoshimura has an in-house Isotropic Superfinishing Process (ISF) department, and that’s where we can blueprint your engine’s gear sets
just as it’s done on Formula 1 machines. This technology allows your engine to run more freely through decreased friction and proper
interaction of reciprocating parts.
Even though typical ISF treatments include gear sets and internal transmission parts, all of the reciprocating parts will benefit from the ISF
process. We use this same process on our 240-horsepower Superbike racing engines, as well as 70-horsepower Motocross/ATV racing
mills. The mirror-like finish reduces friction on all reciprocating surfaces, reducing drag and increasing durability. It also reduces heat significantly, which makes for a smoother-running engine. After ISF treatment, every reciprocating part interacts smoothly and the combined
reduction in friction unleashes previously trapped power.
Unleashing trapped power, lowering operating temperatures, and giving your machine that winning feeling is a good thing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT AFTER-MARKET EXHAUST
SYSTEMS FOR MOTORCYCLES AND ATVS IN CALIFORNIA.
This is Motorcycle Industry Council’s interpretation of California law and regulations related to after-market exhaust systems.
MIC has prepared this information in an effort to clarify related issues for dealers in California.
What exhaust systems and slip-on mufflers can a California dealer sell or install without violating California air pollution control
requirements?
After-market exhaust systems that can legally be sold under California’s air pollution control requirements are (1) systems that are designated “replacement parts,” (2) systems considered “modified parts” for which an Executive Order has been issued, and (3) systems
only for use on “racing vehicles” that have been adequately identified as such.
What exhaust systems and slip-on mufflers are considered “replacement parts”?
Under California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations, “Replacement parts” are parts that have the same effect on emissions as the
original equipment part that they are intended to replace. In the case of exhaust systems for motorcycles and ATVs, CARB considers
after-market exhaust systems to be replacement parts if either of the following conditions is met:
1. The vehicle was not originally equipped with a catalyst and all emission controls originally connected to the exhaust system are
reconnected to the after-market exhaust system and are functioning properly. (It is rare for other emission controls to be connected
to a non-catalyst motorcycle or ATV exhaust system, but examples include an exhaust gas oxygen sensor or an air injection system.)
2. The vehicle was originally equipped with one or more catalysts, but the catalyst(s) are retained and all emission controls originally
connected to the exhaust system (e.g., an oxygen sensor) are reconnected to the after-market exhaust system and are functioning
properly.
As long as they meet the above definition of “replacement parts,” “slip-on” mufflers are legal for use on the road unless the muffler being
replaced contained a catalyst.
How can I tell if a “modified” exhaust system has been approved?
“Modified” parts are components that are designed to perform differently from original equipment components with respect to emissions control. Under CARB regulations, any exhaust system component that replaces an original equipment catalyst or eliminates a provision for an exhaust gas oxygen sensor or some other emissions control device connected to the exhaust system is a “modified” part.
After-market part manufacturers are required to provide a label to identify modified parts that have been approved for sale. The label
will indicate the manufacturer’s name, device name and a valid Executive Order (E.O.) number assigned by CARB. The format of the E.O.
number is D-xxx-xxx, where “xxx” is a series of designated numbers. The label is either affixed directly to the part itself or included with
the part with instructions to install it in a visible location.
When can I sell a “modified” exhaust system without a CARB label?
Parts for “Racing Vehicles” may be sold under certain circumstances without CARB approval. Under Health and Safety Code Section
39048, the term “Racing vehicle” is defined to mean “a competition vehicle not used on public highways.” Under California Health and
Safety Code Section 43001, air pollution control requirements do not apply to “racing vehicles.” Exhaust systems for competition vehicles not used on public highways are also exempt. CARB allows the marketing and sale of modified parts “for competition use only”
provided an adequate disclaimer is used in any advertising and packaging.
Can I install an unapproved after-market exhaust system that was purchased by the owner from out of state?
Installation of unapproved after-market exhaust systems is legal only if the systems are “replacement parts” or being installed on a
|motorcycle or ATV for competition use only.
