New Look and Features
santaclara.org, the primary source for Santa Clara visitor
and meeting information has a new look and added functionality.
The Silicon Valley city’s site now features a Flash photo montage
on its home page, a link to an all-new “Santa Clara blog,” and a
virtual concierge for quick access to comprehensive visitor
information.
The home page visual highlight is a continuous moving scroll
featuring high-resolution photographs of the city’s prominent sites
including the Santa Clara Convention Center, California’s Great
America theme park, and Santa Clara University, among others.
The blog features insider views of what’s happening in the city,
with functionality to enable readers to add their own
commentary. The virtual concierge quickly links visitors to
diverse Silicon Valley attractions. The popular Santa Clara hotel
booking engine takes a more-prominent position on the page
allowing visitors to browse traveler specials and securely book
reservations online.
The site was created by Cardinal Communications of Point
Richmond, California in conjunction with the Santa Clara
Chamber of Commerce and Convention-Visitors Bureau.
Mr. Manners has something to
say… At a San Jose Symphony
event, 30% of the 100 people who
had signed up to attend were noshows. At an even more recent San
Jose Repertory Theatre party, half of
the 48 people who had RSVP’d their
attendance didn’t put in an
appearance, and only one of them
called to apologize.
Now, discourtesy is fairly common in
the‘90’s--too many people don’t
bother to reply when an RSVP is
requested. But when the do say
they’re coming--and then don’t--that
leaves the hosts hanging with a lot of
leftovers and a distinctly bummed out
impression of the inconsiderate
wretches. Don’t let this be you. And
don’t think nobody will notice. The
Rep party hosts certainly did. They
still have your name tags.”

“Going on a treasure hunt in Silicon Valley”
SVCA is actively preparing for our 6th Annual Hospitality Awards program.
From past year’s comments received, “this is an outstanding event
recognizing people in the hospitality industry for the par excellence service
they provided and their outstanding networking through the recent year.”
If you are going out to dinner, playing a round of golf, wine tasting in the
local Santa Cruz Mountains, or attending a show or museum; you may be
departing to one of the many establishments/attractions acknowledged
through the Silicon Valley Concierge Association (SVCA) for their splendid
hospitality. How do you know? You will see their “award” displayed in their
establishment.
These “treasures” are being displayed throughout Silicon Valley from the
previous 5 years of all nominees and winners. Some places have 2 or 3
awards displayed. Yes, you may find these in your daily paths.
I have viewed recently:
3 awards displayed in restaurants on Castro Street in
downtown Mountain View
1 award at the Santa Clara CVB/Chamber office
1 award at Coyote Creek Golf Course
1 award at Campo di Bocce while playing bocce ball
DO YOU KNOW THE WAY?
Over the course of 2008, the Mineta San Jose International Airport will be
building up, tearing down, upgrading and replacing most of its terminal
facilities. This $1.3 billion project is in Phase 1, hoped to be completed by
mid-2010.
Demolition of the north end of Terminal C is slated to occur this month, to
clear the site by April for the start of a new Terminal B. Structural steel
erection for Terminal B is scheduled to begin in the fall.
Modifications already made and those on the way—relocation of aircraft
gates, consolidation of security checkpoints, installation of shared-use
airline ticket counters—are designed to provide flexibility and efficiency to
the flying public.
Please be patient, asks San Jose tourism officials, and pardon our dust.

Technology Tip
Have you tried to open an excel spreadsheet or word document recently,
only to receive a frustrating error saying you cannot open?
The cause may be from someone sending you a file from the new Windows
Vista operating system on their computer. Ask this person to “save as” to
an older version of excel or word and resend to you.

Visitors explore how Intel’s advanced silicon
technology is enhancing life across the globe.
Intel Museum today announced the opening of
several new exhibits that demonstrate the
transforming role of Intel silicon technology in a
changing world. The exhibits take visitors from a
rural classroom in South Africa to an online social
networking environment.
One new exhibit highlights Intel’s educational
initiatives, which include more than $100 million
invested annually in over 50 countries. By providing
tools and training, Intel helps teachers and students
use advanced silicon technology in their classrooms
to gain excellence in science and math skills. Arti, an
artificial intelligence robot, converses with museum
guides to help tell this fascinating story.
Visitors can also catch a handful of “binary rain,”
representing the digitized data created by e-mails,
cell phones, video, and more. In addition, they have
an opportunity to “get digitized” as they snap their
digital photo and send a digital postcard that they
create at the museum.
Continuing to explore the new exhibits, visitors can
learn how digital data travels; understand file size,
bandwidths, and connections; and discover more
about networks, virtual worlds, and the GRID*.
Interactive activities demonstrate how technology
influences the way people communicate, conduct
business, collaborate, and even socialize.
About the Museum. The Intel Museum was
established in 1992 to present the history of Intel
Corporation. Admission and parking are free. The
museum’s docent and self-guided tours offer a
unique high-tech experience for groups visiting
Silicon Valley. In addition to informative 30- to 60minute tours, museum maps in multiple languages
provide a quick synopsis of each exhibit. It’s
recommended that groups book tours in advance, by
calling (408) 765-0503 or visiting

SVCA’s Board, under the direction of Mori Mandis, makes sure that you, as
SVCA members, are well informed about resources, venues, key contacts
etc. This is a collaborative venture and communication through networking
and meetings is invigorating - let me assure you!
The New Year 2008 is beginning to gather speed. So let me bring you upto-date about recent activities as well as current and upcoming events:


Cirque du Soleil
This marvelous show, resident in Las Vegas with others touring
the country and globe, was again proof, that children and adults
can be entertained with exciting and accomplished acts without
resorting to trained animals. Kooza, performed in the large tent at
the Taylor Ave. bridge location, was Circus at its best. Those of
you, who did not see it, should make a note for next year’s
Cirque du Soleil.
Tech Museum of Innovation
This is a premier resource for your portfolio. The New Year 2008
was highlighted by the anatomical exhibition of real human
bodies “Body World 2”. It was a great success with several
hundred thousand visitors. It closed on January 26. The
Hackworth IMAX Dome Theater is showing – through March 1:
“The Alps”, a harrowing documentary of scaling the EigerNorthface, one of the most challenging mountains in the Swiss
Alps.
The Swiss National Tourist Office hosted a reception on February
6th for those of Swiss ancestry and those interested in making
Switzerland their next vacation destination (mountain climbing or
not).
You may want to access: http://www.swissroots.org for ancestry
information.
“Seamonsters” will be another upcoming event at the IMAX.
The Tech Museum has also just launched a major
new exhibit creation initiative using the 3D virtual world called
‘Second Life’ and is inviting would-be
Sponsors to participate in this new venue (on the web:
http://[email protected])
Dr. Friess, President of the Tech and Lisa Croel, Senior Director
of Marketing are doing an outstanding job
creating and promoting new programs and exhibits for young
and old alike.
 Hotel Garden Court in Palo Alto
SVCA Board members had their monthly meeting at
the Hotel Garden Court. Jeffery L. Philipps, Front
Office Manager, made sure, that there was time to tour
the property (including a penthouse apartment, guest
and meeting rooms that were exquisitely appointed
and had every imaginable amenity); and sample the
upscale cuisine and outstanding service provided by Il
Fornaio, the premier, in-house, restaurant. Garden
Court is part of the VINCCI Hoteles group (this is not a
typo!). Tour appointments are welcome. Call 650 3231912 or go on the web: http://www.gardencourt.com

“Gilroy Gardens to open for Easter
weekend”
This was the heading in the San Jose
Mercury News. Gilroy Gardens, formerly
known as ‘Bonfante Gardens’ will open for
the season on March 21 and will stay open
for Easter Sunday. A “Spring Fling” floral
extravaganza and children’s scavenger hunt
will greet guests. Go on the web for Park
