Passover
meal
came to a close, John
writes that Jesus rose from
the table and “laid aside his
garment, took a towel, and
girded Himself” (13:4). He
took a basin of water and began
to wash the feet of His disciples.
Footwashing was designated to the lowliest of
servants. It was not the role of the Master to
subjugate Himself before his pupils, but the Son
of Man came to serve. No doubt the disciples
were uncomfortable with this situation. When
Jesus came to Peter, he protested and told his
Teacher, “You shall never wash my feet!”
Jesus corrected Peter explaining that he either
had Him wash his feet or Peter had “no part with
Me.”
Though Peter then requested a full washing,
Jesus replied that he was already clean; it was
only Peter’s feet that needed attention.
Similarly, we are in Christ, fully sanctified;
cleansed in the blood of the Lamb. Nonetheless,
we still sin; but when we sin, we confess our sins
and He “cleanses us” from all unrighteousness
(1 John 1:9). Jesus, however, told His disciples
to do the same thing for each other. How is this
enacted between church members?
Though we describe “service” as specific
ministries (bus, children, etc), those are only
“where” we serve. Jesus was describing “how”
we serve. We serve with loving humility. We
serve with the mindset that we are boastering
our brothers and sisters in Christ. We apply the
words of Jesus that greatness is found in being
the greater servant. We see their “dirty feet”
from the struggles of life, trials, and temptation
and willingly bow to the floor with a basin of
water to refresh their spirits, encourage their
hearts, and motivate their resolve for the cause
of Christ. Jesus wasn’t just cleaning their feet;
He was preparing them for their next step. This
is also what He instructs us to do.
We may not consider humility as a privilege
and it is certainly not a coveted trait in the
world that yearns the “pride of life,” but we are
nonetheless promised that “he who humbles
himself will be exalted.” Without humility, our
service to Christ is compromised by our own
personal aspirations and limits. It is humility
that puts the “servant” back into service. It is
this type of service that lets Him
increase while we decrease.
Be willing to “wash feet.”

Twenty times in the New Testament
Jesus issued a compelling and
challenging invitation to follow Him.
He's not interested in mere fans. He
doesn't want enthusiastic admirers. He
wants Completely Committed Followers. Based
on the engaging approach of Kyle Idleman, this one

to deny one's self and truly follow Jesus.

Trust Only In God
Theme
Only God has the power to help. The poor may be willing but have no ability; the wicked who are rich can
help, but won’t. The believer is to trust in God alone!
Scripture Reading
Psalm 62:5-12 “My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. He only is my rock and
my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my
strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God
is a refuge for us. Selah. Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in
the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity. Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery:
if riches increase, set not your heart upon them. God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power
belongeth unto God. Also unto thee, 0 Lord, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man according to
his work.”
Relating to the Scripture
Commentator Adam Clarke tells us: “Common men can give no help. They are vanity, and it is folly to trust
in them; for although they may be willing, yet they have no ability to help you: Rich men are a lie. They
promise much, but perform nothing; they cause you to hope, but mock your expectation. Both of them united
are vanity... Put both together in one scale,... and both ... weigh nothing.”
Have you ever needed help? In life’s journey we all need help from time to time. Have you ever found that
those who would help you had nothing with which to help? Then on the other hand those who had the means
to help you would not. That is exactly the situation that the Psalmist is speaking of here.
What do we do when we are in this kind of predicament? We trust in God! For all wealth, power, and ability
of any kind can be found in Him. Unlike the poor who have no power to help, God has power in abundance.
And, unlike the wicked rich who have no mercy, God is abundant in mercy.
Offering Admonition /Confession

nor in the power of the rich, but in God who is our

JESUS' TEMPTATION AND YOUR TEMPTATION
Part 2
Mar. 30,Your
2014
Understanding
Shape and Using It
Last week we learned 4 things about temptation.
1.
It is not a sin to be tempted.
2.
You will never outgrow temptation.
3.
After a spiritual high you can always expect a temptation test.
4.
Temptation isn't always about your weakness.
Many times, temptation is about misusing your strengths.
Many believers struggle with temptations. We get stuck in the repetitive cycle of good
intentions, the failure, then confession.
SEVEN STEPS TO OVERCOMING TEMPTATION THE WAY JESUS DID.
I.
Use the ___________ of God.
Psalm 119:11 "Your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against You."
II.
You need to identify your _____________________.
Matthew 26:41 "Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh
is weak."
A. There are four questions you need to ask yourself:
III.
1.
"____________ am I most tempted?"
2.
"____________ am I most tempted?"
3.
"Who's ______ ______ when I'm most tempted?"
4.
"How do I __________ right before I'm tempted?"
You Need to ________ to _________ Temptation.
Proverbs 4:26 27 "Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. Do not turn to the
right or the left; remove your foot from evil."
IV.
Guard Your ___________.
Proverbs 4:23 "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life."
V.
Pray for _________________.
I Corinthians 10:13 "No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is
faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also
make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it."
VI.
Refocus Your _________________.
VII.
Find A ________________ to Help You.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if
they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one
to help him up."
IF YOU DO THESE THINGS YOU WILL BREAK THE ________ OF TEMPTATION IN YOUR LIVE.
