Pinot Noir - Borderline
Marin County
$36
100 cases
Our 2010 Borderline Pinot Noir offers enticing aromas of cherry and violets, with overtones of sandalwood. On the palate, bright cherry
flavors are layered over a structure of nicely resolved tannins. The finish shows more sweet cherry and rhubarb progressing into a light
dustiness that is the signature of Marin County pinot. The 2010 Borderline pinot is the perfect choice for a Sunday chicken dinner, or
served as the first red in a dinner with multiple wine selections.
Pinot Noir - Russian River Valley
Russian River Valley, Sonoma County
$36
350 cases
In spite of the difficult growing conditions and urgency of the crush, we are delighted with our 2010 RRV blend. It is a medium dark,
luscious example of classic Russian River Valley pinot noir. Signature aromas of cherries, red plums, and asian spice abound, and on first
taste, concentrated flavors of black cherry and boysenberry flow into a lengthy finish revealing hints of spiced plums. Our RRV cuvée
provides layers of flavor with classic structure that drinks well now and over the next 3-5 years. We call it our “meat and potatoes” Pinot,
as it pairs perfectly with grilled meats and herb roasted potatoes.
Pinot Noir - Sonoma Coast
Sonoma Coast, Sonoma County
$36
270 cases
The 2010 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir starts off with alluring aromas of cherry, coriander, and black tea. On the palate, the medium body
delivers cherry and earthy exotic spices, progressing into a lengthy finish with suggestions of dried herbs and the forest floor. The 2010
Sonoma Coast pairs well with aged cheeses, mushroom risotto, and fresh crusty sourdough with farm butter on the side.
Pinot Noir - Foray
Russian River Valley, Sonoma County
$40
140 cases
Our 2010 Foray features generous aromas of boysenberry, plum, and coffee. Lush mouthfeel and saturated boysenberry and blueberry
flavors reign, with high notes of toasty oak and spice. The finish is long and offers echoes of the vibrant fruit layered with just enough
lingering spice and acidity. We suggest clearing your agenda for the evening and pairing this with roast pork loin crusted with fennel, black
pepper, and mustard seed.
Pinot Noir- Silver Pines Vineyard
Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma County
$44
140 cases
The 2010 Silver Pines greets you with pretty aromas of dark cherry, pie spice, and hints of sandalwood. Bright flavors of tart cherries and
cassis transition to a lengthy finish balanced between composed tannins and clean acidity, with nice cherry and toasty oak closing things
out. We recommend pairing the 2010 Silver Pines with grilled portabello mushrooms or pan seared duck breast.
Pinot Noir - Michaud Vineyard
Chalone, Monterey County
$44
120 cases
Opening with delicate raspberry and pomegranate aromas, with a hint of fennel, the 2010 Michaud Vineyard delivers bright fruit flavors
complemented by Michaud's signature tannins, spice, and a lingering nuanced finish. As a consequence of the tannins and structure in this
wine, it will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring. This 2010 Michaud pairs superbly with cedar plank grilled salmon and a long evening, as it
evolves in the glass and demonstrates the unique charm of the Chalone AVA.
Cabernet Franc - Russian River Valley
Russian River Valley, Sonoma County
$28
150 cases
The 2010 Cabernet Franc hits the mark we were aiming for, with a fruit-forward nose full of fresh boysenberries, violets, fresh cracked
Tellicherry peppercorns and a chalky aroma suggestive of graphite. On the palate, the wine is lively and full of bright berry and herb
flavors, leading to a clean finish graced with notes of wet stones. This wine is versatile, pairing well with virtually anything that bistro you
call a kitchen is whipping up, such as grilled steak, roasted chicken, or gratin with leeks and potatoes.

Vermentino - California
California
$18
250 cases
The 2011 Vermentino has a crisp bouquet of citrus and herbs complemented by a lush mouthfeel of ideally ripe fruit, followed by brisk
acidity at the finish. This wine is best served well-chilled, and when paired with simply prepared grilled fish garnished with EVOO, it
evokes memories of warm evenings and great meals in family run port-side restaurants on the mediterranean coast of Italy. It takes us
there every time.

I recently sampled six new Pinot Noir releases from the challenging 2010 vintage and I am happy to report that these wines

2010 Bailiwick Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
14.3% alc., pH 3.81, TA 0.62, 350 cases, $36. Drawn from three vineyards (41% Dutton-Lorenzo, 46% O’Neel, 13% RLR).
Several clones including 115, 667, 777 and Pommard. Aged in 35% new French oak barrels. · Moderately light reddish-purple
color in the glass. This is quintessential Russian River Valley Pinot dialed back in intensity: unplugged if you will. Initially shy
aromas pick up intensity over the time in the glass offering scents of Bing cherries and baking spices. Delicious, deep cherry
flavor on a silky framework in an intensely flavored, mid weight, elegant style, finishing with an appealing slinkiness. Silky
tannins make for immediate accessibility. Very good.
2010 Bailiwick Foray Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
14.4% alc., pH 3.66, TA 0.53, 140 cases, $40. From The RLR vineyard located just outside Forestville. Soil is
Goldridge sandy loam and clones are 113, 114 and 115. Aged in 33% new French oak barrels. · Moderately light
reddish-purple color in the glass. Shy aromas of earth-kissed black cherries, forest floor and deep red rose petals.
Richer and more deeply flavored than the Russian River Valley bottling, endowed with a perfectly ripe core of
sappy, dark red and black cherries and raspberries, supported by smooth oak and fruit tannins, and finishing with
very impressive length. Still young and undeveloped, but displaying impeccable balance that predicts an optimistic
future. Clearly special. (Named 2012 California Pinot Noir Honorable Mention December 2012)
2010 Bailiwick Silver Pines Vineyard Sonoma Mountain Pinot Noir
14.2% alc., pH 3.66, TA 0.64,140 cases, $44. Growers are Norm and Carole Silverman. The vineyard overlooks
Bennett Valley from an elevation of 900 feet. Planted in 2000, the loamy-clay volcanic soil is low in vigor limiting
yields to about 2 tons per acre. Clone 115. Aged in 34% new French oak barrels. · Moderately light reddish-purple
color in the glass. Nicely perfumed with aromas of dark red fruits, cardamom spice and candied rose petal. Juicy
red cherries and berries saturate the mid palate, embellished with spice and magic. Healthy, but non-aggressive
fine-grain tannins add grip and support. Still young and takes its own sweet time opening up. Tremendous finishing
power with fruit coming and going in waves. Cellar this another year or two and you will be happily infatuated.
(Named 2012 California Pinot Noir All-Americans Second Team December 2012)
2010 Bailiwick Michaud Vineyard Chalone Monterey County Pinot Noir
14.9% alc., pH 3.66, TA 0.64, 120 cases, $44. This vineyard sits at 1600’ above the Salinas Valley floor at the entrance to the
Pinnacles National Monument. Decomposed granite and limestone are at the surface. Farmed by Michael Michaud, a former
winemaker for Chalone during its glory years. Clones 115, 667, 777 and Swan. Aged in 40% new French oak barrels. ·
Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. Delicate aromas of fresh blueberry-pomegranate juice and assorted dark
fruits. Somewhat earthy, burly and rustic, displaying a hearty core of delicious purple and black fruits backed by ripe, firm
tannins. A very elegant presentation that is unusual for this vineyard in my experience. Highly terroir-driven. Very good.
2010 Bailiwick Borderline Marin County Pinot Noir
14.4% alc., pH 3.69, TA 0.56, 100 cases, $36. Sourced solely from the Kendric Vineyard farmed by Stewart
Johnson. Clones 115 and 777. Aged in 50% new French oak barrels. · Moderately light reddish-purple hue in the
glass. A panoply of scents including black cherries, pie berries, clay, oak, and white chocolate that come and go in
the glass. Strikingly fresh berry flavor, seemingly wild and exotic, underlain with well-integrated oak and supple
tannins. Unusually ripe for cool Marin County. An evocative middleweight, that enters with aplomb, and finishes
smooth and polished. I really like this Pinot. (Named 2012 California Pinot Noir Honorable Mention December
2012)
2010 Bailiwick Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.4% alc., pH 3.76, TA 0.64, 270 cases, $36. Sourced from the Ross Ranch Vineyard, located in the hills southwest of
Sebastopol. Goldridge sandy loam soil. Clones 115 and Pommard. Aged in 50% new French oak barrels. · Light reddishpurple hue in the glass. Vibrant aromas of fresh red fruits, especially cherry glaze, with notes of spice, sandalwood and toasty
oak. Explodes on the palate with melt in your mouth, perfectly ripe cherries accented by dark chocolate and spice. Very
smoothly textured with gossamer tannins and noticeable persistence on the fruit-filled finish. Shows the most oak influence of
all the Bailiwick wines this vintage, but it is not intrusive. Very good (+).

CELLAR SELECTION
This feels lush and important right out of the bottle, tantalizing with tart cherry, cola and persimmon flavors that are wrapped in
acids and tannins. Give it up to six years, and enjoy. All of the fruit comes from the Foray Vineyard in the Green Valley. — S.H.

CELLAR SELECTION
The vineyard is a fine one, the fruit source for highly regarded Pinots from Tandem and Bailiwick’s own Silver Pines label. The
wine is dry and silky, with strong acidity and tannins that currently render it tough to appreciate. Give it 5–6 years to let the
raspberry and cola flavors integrate with the oak. — S.H. Published 2/1/2013

CELLAR SELECTION
Light and silky, this packs a real punch in complexity, with layers of raspberry, cherry, cola and sweet oak. There’s a
mushroom-driven earthiness you might call Burgundian. The tightness suggests aging, possibly over the long haul. — S.H.

Medium bodied and dry, this has a savory spiciness, with long-lasting flavors of cherry and smoky, vanilla-scented oak. A
coating of finely ground tannins gives it enough bite to accompany steak. One of the best Cabernet Francs from the Russian
River Valley in a long time. — S.H.

EDITORS' CHOICE
This wine is so good, it could make Vermentino the next big thing—except there’s so little of the variety planted in California.
Bright and juicy in acidity, it has flavors of citrus and tropical fruit, apricot, peach and honeysuckle. It finishes dry and spicy;
pair it with pasta in pesto sauce. — S.H. Published 2/1/2013

Bailiwick Wines
Paul and Bryan Vais founded Bailiwick Wines in 2009 following
years pursuing careers outside of the wine and food world. The San
Francisco Bay Area natives count family and the traditions and
experiences that surrounded them—many involving great meals and
wines—as the driving forces that led them to take the plunge and
make their own wines 25 years ago first in a basement and
subsequently in garages. The Bailiwick philosophy is to source the
best vineyards in multiple appellations and create the best
representation of that vineyard in the bottle. Pinot bottlings include
two regional bottlings from Russian River Valley and Marin County,
and two vineyard designates from the Michaud Vineyard in the
Chalone AVA and the Silver Pines Vineyard on Sonoma Mountain.
A Vermentino is also produced. Definitely a producer worth
watching.

Bailiwick Wines May/Jun 13
By Josh Raynolds
2011 Bailiwick Vermentino California
87
($18) (made from a blend of fruit sourced from Red Hills of Lake County and Paso Robles): Pale yellow. Highpitched aromas of lemon zest, green apple and white flowers, with a hint of white pepper in the background.
Juicy and penetrating, with a distinctly bitter edge to its citrus and orchard fruit flavors. Closes with firm grip
and a touch of back-end heat.
2010 Bailiwick Pinot Noir Russian River Valley
88
($36) Light, bright red. High-pitched aromas of redcurrant, Asian spices, tobacco and musky herbs. Pliant
and fine-grained, with good intensity to its spice-accented red berry fruit. Nicely balanced and taut, finishing
with firm, even tannins and good length.
2010 Bailiwick Pinot Noir Silver Pines Vineyard Sonoma Mountain
87
($44) Dark red. Dried red berries and musky herbs on the nose and palate. Smooth and open-knit, with a
touch of warmth on the back half. Finishes supple and broad, with good cling and a hint of bitter chocolate.
Shows plenty of fleshy red fruit but I'd have liked more verve.
2010 Bailiwick Pinot Noir Michaud Vineyard Chalone
91
($44) Bright ruby-red. Potent dark berry and cherry-vanilla aromas, with peppery spice and cola nuances in
the background. Fleshy and round on the palate, offering gently sweet black raspberry and cherry compote
flavors lifted up by tangy acidity. Rich, lively, with strong finishing cut and a lingering floral nuance. At 14.9%
alcohol this wine is pushing the upper limit of many pinot lovers' richness threshold but I found it vivacious
with no impression of heat or undue weight.
2010 Bailiwick Pinot Noir Foray Russian River Valley
91
($40) Vivid ruby-red. Blackberry, cherry compote, licorice and vanilla on the fragrant nose and in the mouth.
Shows very good depth and energy, with no excess weight but pretty serious back-end thrust. Closes spicy
and long, with lingering vanilla and dark berry notes and subtle tannins. This wine benefits quite a bit from
air.
2010 Bailiwick Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
90
($36) Light, bright red. High-pitched aromas of redcurrant and strawberry, with floral and Asian spice notes
building with air. Tangy and precise, offering spicy red fruit and floral pastille flavors and a touch of bitter
herbs. Closes tangy and precise, with very good energy and a hint of dusty tannins.
2010 Bailiwick Pinot Noir Borderline Marin County
91
($36) (50% new oak here): Bright ruby-red. Dark berries, vanilla and Asian spices on the fragrant nose and
in the mouth. Juicy and precise, with strong back-end punch and a zap of minerality adding lift. Finishes
smooth, sweet and long, with soft tannins adding shape and subtle grip. This wine was made from fruit grown
in the Kendric Vineyard.
2010 Bailiwick Cabernet Franc Russian River Valley
89
($28) Deep ruby. Oak-spiced dark berry and cherry pit aromas show a smoky quality and a peppery topnote.
Juicy and precise, offering gently sweet blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors and a touch of vanilla. Supple
tannins give shape to the finish, which leaves a spicy note behind. Steve Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - 2012 Release Reviews

Grand Harvest Awards Announces 2012 Results
Bailiwick Wines Takes Medals
nd
Santa Rosa, CA – The 22 Annual Grand Harvest Awards has revealed the results of this year’s competition.
Chief Judge Bill Traverso announced there were 8 Double Gold, 94 Gold, and 371 Silver awards handed out in
early November. Established in 1990, the wine competition is based solely on terroir. No Best-of awards are
awarded.
“The wines judged at the Grand Harvest Awards showcase the art of winemaking from diverse terroirs from the
United States and other wine regions around the world,” stated Traverso. “No Best-of awards are given for GHA.
Since judging deals with such a diversity of climates, there is no possible way to determine a Best-of standing.
The awards show the individuality of each of the various terroirs.”

2010 Bailiwick Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast, Sonoma County 2010 Bailiwick Cabernet Franc, Russian River Valley The Grand Harvest Awards are based on the concept of terroir as judges recognize this influence while tasting
wines with other wines of the same appellation. With cross-regional competition removed, the inherent quality of
wines can be seen without the influences that sometimes eclipse even a wine of very high quality. Wines are
judged in the context of their viticultural region in order to accomplish two things: to recognize the complexities
and nuances of regional wines, and also to measure the influence of regional soil and weather characteristics on
the taste and quality of individual wines.
The specialized panel of judges, trained to assess terroir, included the following experts:
1.
William S. Bloxom-Carter Executive Chef and Director of Food and Beverage, Playboy Mansion, Los
Angeles
2.
Virginie Boone Wine Writer for the Wine Enthusiast, Santa Rosa Press Democrat and others
3.
Carl Brandhorst President of the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association (ASWA)
4.
Jeanne Burgess VP/Director of Winemaking Operations, Seavin, Inc., Florida’s largest wine growing
enterprise
5.
Gina Gallo Winemaker for Gallo Family Vineyards
6.
Dennis Martin Vice President/Director of Winemaking, Fetzer Vineyards
Results are posted on winecompetitions.com, a new website developed by the developers of EnofileOnline for
Vineyard & Winery Management to house all six of their wine competitions, and on enofileonline.com.
Official sponsors of the competition included WIN, Riedel, Hilton Sonoma Wine Country, Penta Water, Graber

From as near as Napa to as far as Virginia the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition drew in experts from media,
restaurant and hospitality, retail wine, wine education and wine making to judge over 5,500 entries in 2013. The San Francisco
Chronicle Wine Competition (SFCWC), the largest competition of American Wines in the World, is a platform that combines
generations of wine connoisseurs with both mature and newer pallets. Held over four days, the judging began January 8 at the
Cloverdale Citrus Fairgrounds in Sonoma County, CA.
Bailiwick Wines has been chosen to participate in the annual Public Tasting that will take place on Feb. 16th in San Francisco.
This popular event will feature thousands of the country’s finest wineries and their awarded wines, along with gourmet
pairings. The Public Tasting allows people to come together, learn about many new wines, and enjoy a dream-fulfilling wine
experience.
The proceeds of the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition support the non-profit Cloverdale Citrus Fair and help support
wine and food education at educational institutions and non-profit organizations. Santa Rosa Junior College Wine Studies
Program and Culinary Arts Program, Fresno State University Enology Program, California Polytechnic State University
Enology Program at San Luis Obispo, and other non-profit organizations have received support from past competitions.

SUMMARY
VINTAGE 2009 REDS
Pinot Noir - Borderline
Marin County
$34
150 cases
Our Borderline Marin County AVA wine showcases high quality pinot noir that dedicated growers produce near the Marin - Sonoma
County border. These vineyards lie along the southern edge of the Petaluma wind gap - a break in the coastal hills that funnels afternoon
winds and summer fog straight off the Pacific, across the Point Reyes National Seashore, and into the San Francisco North Bay. Easing the
summer heat of Marin's interior hills allows pinot noir to benefit from a long growing season. The mild Spring and near-perfect September
in 2009 produced limited yields of fully ripened fruit, with a core of refreshing acidity. Our Borderline Pinot leads with aromas of Bing
cherry and cedar, with light caramel notes and hints of roasted arabica beans. On the palate, a round center of bright cherry flavor is
layered over a structure of nicely resolved tannins. The finish is crisp, and is followed by complex flavors of asian spice and vanilla. This
wine is a well poised, lively wine that pairs well with herb crusted roast chicken and a Sunday family dinner.
Pinot Noir - Russian River Valley
Russian River Valley, Sonoma County
$36
225 cases
Our Russian River Valley AVA wine draws from two highly regarded vineyards that contribute distinctly different characteristics. 57% of
the fruit came from the Maurice Galante Vineyard that lies along Cherry Ridge Road, in the Green Valley sub-appellation of the Russian
River Valley and the remaining 43% comes from the O'Neel Vineyard along Hall Road in the plain of Santa Rosa. The Russian River Valley
saw a near ideal year in 2009, with perfect conditions in September of warm afternoons and cool nights, allowing the grapes to ripen to
their fullest while retaining their acids. This wine is a medium dark, luscious example of classic Russian River Valley pinot noir. Complex
aromas of dried cherry, mushrooms, and grapefruit flow out of the glass. On first taste, a focused cherry core expands into mouth-filling
flavors of red plum and cola. The lengthy finish reveals hints of cinnamon and leather. This wine provides layers of flavor and a nuanced
complexity that rewards slow savoring. We call it our “meat and potatoes” Pinot, as it pairs perfectly with grilled meats and herb roasted
potatoes.
Pinot Noir- Silver Pines Vineyard
Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma County
$44
50 cases
Located at 900’ elevation overlooking nearby Bennett Valley, on the northwestern flank of Sonoma Mountain, the Silver Pines Vineyard is
well sited to yield Pinot Noir of uncommon complexity. In 2009, Sonoma Mountain received little rain in April, and a stretch of beautiful
warm days and crisp evenings in September that allowed the Silver Pines fruit to ripen perfectly. The 115 clone yields a wine that emerges
from the glass with pretty aromas of cherry, white pepper, and vanilla. In the mouth, round full flavors of red fruit and cassis communicate
the pedigree of this site. The lingering finish is balanced with well-integrated tannins, with a hint of orange peel showing at the end. Our
Silver Pines Pinot Noir is an elegant wine that is well suited to pair with roasted duck confit.
Pinot Noir - Michaud Vineyard
Chalone, Monterey County
$44
50 cases
The Michaud Vineyard is an extraordinary location for cultivating Pinot Noir. Lying at 1600’ above the Salinas Valley floor and at the front
door of Pinnacles National Monument, the vineyard is extreme by typical Pinot Noir standards. 2009 was a typical growing season for the
Chalone AVA, with rain finished by May and long stretches of high amplitude day time heat and chilly nights. The clones 115, 667, 777, and
Swan selection were perfect, with small tight clusters and uniform berry sizes. In the glass, the wine has a poised bouquet, offering
delicate raspberry aromas with fennel and lavender notes. The structure is superb, with a center of bright red fruit and hints of soy and
minerals. On the finish, the signature tannins emerge with high notes of pomegranate and anise. Our Michaud Vineyard Pinot Noir is a
delightfully subtle wine which will benefit from cellaring 3-5 years..

We traveled the length and breadth of California researching vineyards and growers cultivating vermentino. Producing a vermentino that
highlights the varietal’s lovely qualities and ability to complement mediterranean inspired cuisine was our goal. Our solution draws from
two vineyards. The Catherine’s Vineyard fruit provides a foundation of bright acidity and light floral notes of sweet pea. The Lovett
Vineyard contributes the concentrated varietal flavors of apple, pineapple, and bay leaf with a fuller more unctuous mouth feel. The
resulting blend delivers intriguing flavors and mouth watering freshness. This wine is best served well-chilled, and when paired with simply
prepared grilled fish, it will evoke fond memories of great dinners in port side restaurants in central and southern Italy. It takes us there

2009 Pinot Noir - Borderline - Marin County
92 points
So savory and easy to like, you might miss the complexity, but it’s there. Offers flashy raspberry and cherry pie, red plum, pie
spice and sandalwood flavors, packed into firm but gentle tannins, and brightened with crisp acidity. The finish is entirely dry
despite all the sweet fruit. Really defines the modern coastal California style, even if there’s no particular Marin County
signature. — S.H. Published 5/1/2012
2009 Pinot Noir - Russian River Valley
90 points
Defines Russian River Valley Pinot Noir in the dryness, silkiness and full-bodied richness, with flavors of cherries,
pomegranates, raspberries and slightly underripe persimmons. This complex wine grows better as it warms in the glass. Drink
over the next 2–3 years. — S.H.

CELLAR SELECTION
Tight and brittle now, with acidity and dryness starring. The thing to understand about this Pinot is that it’s quite modest in
alcohol and understated in flavor, showing rhubarb, pomegranate and cherry Lifesaver flavors with a minerally edge. Elegant
now, it should develop over the next six years. — S.H. Published 5/1/2012
2009 Pinot Noir - Michaud Vineyard - Chalone
91 points!
CELLAR SELECTION
A dry, tannic young Pinot Noir. It’s not a big, gushy wine, but comes down more on the elegant side, with low alcohol and an
earthiness to the cherry and cola fruit. You want to age it for at least five years, to let it show its stuff. — S.H. Published
5/1/2012
2010 Vermentino - California

Basically dry, this Vermentino is crisp in acidity and forward in lemon, lime and tangerine fruit. It’s a nice, easy drinking wine to
try as a switch from Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio. — S.H. Published 5/1/2012

Bailiwick Reviews!

January 2013
Occasionally a new producer seemingly comes out of nowhere and really grabs my attention. Four bottles of 2009 Bailiwick Pinot Noir
recently showed up on my wine locker doorstep with no explanation attached. I was drawn to the attractive labels and the interesting
sources for the wines. All the wines turned out to be stellar: it was like a gift from heaven.
After consulting the website, I found that brothers Paul and Bryan Vais, natives of the San Francisco Bay Area, are the founders and
vintners. They have been making wine in their basement and various garages for 25 years, gradually acquiring the knowledge to
launch a commercial venture. They had successful careers in engineering, high technology and finance, but longed to enter the wine
business. In 2009, they founded Bailiwick Wine Company, intent on sourcing premium grapes from specially chosen vineyards across
multiple appellations.
Their Pinot Noir winemaking regimen is as follows. Grapes are harvested before dawn, hand sorted at the winery, and 100% destemmed without crushing. A short cold soak in small open top fermenters is followed by inoculation of yeast. Punch downs are
performed 2 to 3 times a day. Post-fermentation maceration is performed and the wine is pressed off into French oak barrels. The
wines are racked once before bottling after spending 17 months in 20%-50% new French oak cooperage, appropriately matched to
the fruit source.
Four 2009 Pinot Noirs and a 2010 Vermentino are the inaugural Bailiwick offerings. The Pinot Noirs are impressive inaugural releases,
displaying deft winemaking. The wines are bright and uplifting with modest alcohol and welcoming acidity, making them easy to
recommend. The owners are foodies and this shows in the suitability of their wines for the dinner table. Visit the well-organized
website at www.bailiwickwines.com where the wines are available for purchase.
2009 Bailiwick Borderline Marin County Pinot Noir
13.9% alc., pH 3.52, TA 0.62, 150 cases, $34. Sourced from Chileno Valley and Kendric vineyards in the
Marin County AVA. Chileno Valley Vineyard is farmed by Mark Pasternak (owner of Devil’s Gulch Ranch and
Vineyard) and Kendric Vineyards is managed by Stewart Johnson (Kendric Vineyards wines). Swan selection,
Dijon and Pommard clones. Aged 17 months in 44% new French oak barrels. · Moderately light reddishpurple color in the glass. Nicely perfumed with cherries, strawberries, spice and dried rose petals. Redfruited, featuring lighter-weight flavors of cherries, raspberries, sandalwood, baking spice, leaf and tobacco.
Crisp, with good acidity and polished fine-grain tannins. Very good.
2009 Bailiwick Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
14.2% alc., pH 3.58, TA 0.64, 225 cases, $36. 57% Maurice Galante Vineyard located in the Green Valley of
Russian River Valley and 43% O’Neel Vineyard situated in the Santa Rosa plain. Clones are 115, 777 and
Pommard. Aged 17 months in 20% new French oak barrels. · Moderately light reddish-purple hue in the
glass. Enticing aromas of dark red cherries, berry jam on toast and wooded forest. Medium-weighted flavors
of fresh cherries, cola, and leaf framed by soft tannins and bright acidity, finishing with some persistence on
the pleasing finish. Not impressive on the attack, but leaves a good impression. Good (+).
2009 Bailiwick Michaud Vineyard Chalone Monterey County Pinot Noir
13.9% alc., pH 3.68, TA 0.62, 50 cases, $44. This vineyard is situated at 1,500 feet above the Salinas Valley
floor at the front door of the Pinnacles National Monument. Decomposed granite and limestone create a soil
profile ideal for Pinot Noir. Farmed by noted winemaker and winegrower Michael Michaud, the masterful
vintner behind some of the memorable Chalone Pinot Noirs of the 1980s. Aged 17 months in 50% new
French oak. The microclimate is challenging, offering little rainfall and extreme diurnal temperature
variations. Crop yields are painfully low. · Moderate reddish-purple color in the glass. Nicely endowed
perfume of blackberries, plum reduction sauce and Herbs de Provence. Delicious black raspberry and blackberry core that is intense
on the attack, finding every nook and cranny in the mouth, and persisting on the earth-kissed, chocolaty finish. Clean and pure, with
bold tannins that are typical for this vineyard. Very good (+).
2009 Bailiwick Silver Pines Vineyard Sonoma Mountain Pinot Noir
13.7% alc., pH 3.63, TA 0.63, 50 cases, $44. This vineyard is located at 900 feet elevation
overlooking Bennett Valley on the northwestern flank of Sonoma Mountain. Clone 115 planted in
2000 by owners Norm and Carole Silverman. Loamy-clay soil is low in vigor, naturally limiting
yields to about 2 tons per acre. Aged 17 months in 30% new French oak barrels. · Moderately
light in color. The nose is redolent of fresh berry jam, spice box and subtle oak that really draws
your attention. Sinfully delicious flavors of fresh-picked dark red berries with a complimentary oak
(vanilla, coffee) underpinning, leaving an impression on the vibrant and dry, berry-relish toned
finish. A charming wine that combines power with finesse. My tasting notes say, “Wow,” and that clearly sums it up.

Our policy on reviewing wines is simple: During domaine or winery visits, if a domaine or winery presents a wine for
consideration, and it is to the best of our knowledge representative and has finished both its primary and secondary
fermentations, then it is reviewed – no exceptions. So if, for example, you are looking at a range of 2009’s from a specific Burgundian producer and you do not see a particular wine in the database, it means that it was not presented for review and
does NOT mean that it received an exceptionally poor score. If it is not in the database, it has not been reviewed. If you do not

Marin County AVA: tiny but growing source for delicate, minerally Pinot Noir
2011 JUNE 21
by Richard Jennings
2011 MARIN COUNTY WINE CELEBRATION – Escalle Winery, Larkspur, California (6/11/2011)
I’ve enjoyed wines from Marin County, mainly Pinot Noir, that I’ve tried over the years. I’ve wanted to attend this event for the
past few years, and was finally able to make it to the 7th Annual Marin County Wine Celebration this year. This tasting of 33
wines from 14 producers confirmed the hypothesis I’d developed from sampling a number of Marin AVA wines in the past: this
appellation is a darn good source for delicate, lighter bodied, minerally Pinot Noirs.
Marin County is a relatively tiny appellation, with only about 200 acres currently planted to vines. That’s up by about 75 acres
in only the past four years, a dramatic increase. Most of those vines are in west Marin, in areas protected from residential and
other development through agricultural easements engineered by the Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT). MALT is a private,
member-supported, non-profit organization that was created in 1980 by a coalition of ranchers and environmentalists to
permanently preserve Marin County farmland for agricultural use.
The site of this tasting was the historic red brick Escalle Winery in Larkspur, which was established by Frenchman Jean
Escalle in the 1890s. It became a popular destination for San Franciscans on weekends at the turn of the century. The cellar’s
antique wood paneling and worn wooden floor lent the tasting a delightfully old fashioned ambience. The tasting was
organized by the Marin County Winegrowers Association, with all proceeds benefitting MALT and DG Education Services.
Marin is bordered on three sides by the Pacific Ocean and San Pablo Bay. These bodies of water help to temper the climate,
keeping it warmer than Napa and Sonoma during the winter months, leading to earlier bud break than those appellations. They
also keep it cooler during the summer growing season, which can easily extend well into October. There can also be a fair
amount of rain in the spring, which depresses yields. As a result of these climatic conditions, the wines tend to be lighter in
body, lower in alcohol, higher in acidity and fairly delicate compared to the wines of many other California wine regions. Those
are particularly appealing qualities in Pinot Noir, and there are some very good Pinots being produced. The vineyard acreage
in Marin County is planted predominantly to Pinot Noir, with small amounts also of Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer,
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
My favorites at this event, which I scored 90 points or higher, were:
Pinot Noir
2009 Bailiwick Wines Borderline – 90+ points
2010 Bailiwick Wines Borderline (barrel sample) – 90-92 points
2008 Burning Bench Cellars Moon Hill Vineyard – 90+ points

2008 Kendric Vineyards – 90+ points
2009 Skywalker Vineyards reserve – 90+ points

Borderline Pinot is based on fruit from the Chileno Valley and Kendric vineyards lying along the Marin-Sonoma border at the
southern edge of the Petaluma wind gap. Those vineyards are planted to a Swan selection, Dijon and Pommard clones. I was
impressed by both their inaugural, ’09, release, and what they’ve got in barrel from 2010.
