Southern Cathedrals Festival 2009
We are delighted to invite you to the 50th consecutive Southern
Cathedrals Festival, held this year in the beautiful setting of Salisbury
Cathedral and the Church of St Thomas in the city centre. As ever,
at the heart of the festival is the daily round of services sung by our
cathedral choirs, a tradition which has continued for centuries.
We shall be celebrating anniversaries of Handel, Haydn,
Mendelssohn and Purcell, and there will be more than a passing
reference to Howells, a previous Assistant Organist at Salisbury.
There will be world premières by Barry Ferguson and Will Todd, and
guest performers include Martin Ings, James Lancelot, Simon Lole,
John Reid, David Stancliffe, Sarum Consort, Salisbury Cathedral’s
Junior Choir, Sarum Orchestra and Sarum Voices.
Our innovative mini-series ‘Youth in Music’ will be given once again
by young people developing their careers in music.
On three evenings, you will be able to experience selections
from Bach’s incomparable 48 Preludes and Fugues, played on the
Cathedral’s Blüthner grand piano. The ticket includes a late-night
glass of wine or fruit juice in the Festival Club.
The festival ends with Mozart’s magnificent Mass in C minor.
During the festival, some gardens in The Close will be open to
festival-goers producing an SCF Programme Book, in which the
opening arrangements will be detailed.
Our Festival Patrons enjoy certain privileges, including priority
booking, which are detailed in this brochure. If you would like to
become a Patron please refer to page 10 for more information.
We very much look forward to welcoming you to Salisbury for this
year’s festival.
