HILDRETH HIGHLIGHTS VOL. XXVII, NO. 3 January 2004 Photo #2 Photo #1 Photo #4 Photo #3 Photo #15 Photo #5 SEE WHAT HAPPENED IN 2003! This was indeed a milestone year for Terri and me. We attended our 50th college class reunions in June and celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary in September. (August 15 2003 was our actual date.) Our daughters, Ellen Pastizzo of Tampa, FL, Susan Scallion of Meriden, CT and Jayne Hildreth of Dania Beach, FL combined their skills and resources to give us a marvelous party. A large group of friends and relatives helped us celebrate in grand style. This was a wonderful evening with outstanding entertainment, both singing and dancing. It was an evening we that we will always cherish. Without question, it was the best party we ever attended, and to think that it was in our honor, made it truly memorable. We are looking forward to the big 2004 Reunion in September. Charleston is one of our most favorite places to visit. BUD & TERRI HILDRETH, 15909 Dawson Ridge Dr., Tampa, FL 33647-1325, Email [email protected] On September 27, 2003, I married Jaime Elizabeth Vassallo, daughter of Mary Kierans Vassallo and Richard William Vassallo of Yardley PA, Wildwood Crest NJ, and Lake Harmony PA. My parents are Joan Cashman Hildreth and Ronald Budd Hildreth. Most reverend Joseph A. Galante, a Roman Catholic bishop, officiated at my wedding in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Philadelphia PA. A reception was subsequently held in the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia PA. (SEE PHOTO # 1) My brother, Steven Ronald Hildreth, was the best man, and my other brother, Bradley Budd Hildreth, was a groomsmen. The bridesmaids included my sisters, Jane Hildreth O'Keeffe and Elizabeth Hildreth Scully. My nephew, Lucas Bradley Hildreth, was one of the ring bearers, and my nieces, Kathleen Cashman O'Keeffe and Anne Elizabeth Scully, were among the flower girls. In her capacity as my godmother and aunt, Carol McDougal Cashman read from the Old Testament. After a twoweek honeymoon in Hawaii, we now reside in our condominium on the West Side of New York near Lincoln Center. Concerning my lineage, I am a twelfth generation descendant of Thomas Hildreth who settled in Southampton NY in the 1640's and a thirteenth generation descendant of Lion Gardiner who in 1639 was the first Lord of the Manor of Gardiner's Island, NY. JAIME & JEFF HILDRETH 165 W. 66th St., New York NY 10023, (Tel.) 917-6968-0668, [email protected] [email protected] The Bradley Hildreth family (SEE PHOTO #2) has had another year filled with excitement. Lucas, 6, attended lacrosse camp and loved it so much that he slept with his lacrosse stick for days. Megan, 5, taught herself how to swim and by July was jumping off the diving board. Alexandra, 3, started nursery school and takes ballet class with her cousin, Kelly O'Keeffe. Bradley kept the excitement going by constructing an ice skating rink in the back yard for the kids to play hockey! BRADLEY & MARIA HILDRETH, 27 Fairmount Blvd., Garden City, NY 11530. Tel. 516-4884844 [email protected] I have new “Twins” grandchildren (SEE PHOTO #3) They are the children of my daughter Marie Matheson Eastman and her husband, Jody Eastman of Urbandale, IA. The twins were born on Sept. 11, 2003. (Something good happened that day!) Their names are Sean Matthew Eastman and Shea Marie Eastman and were born a little over four weeks early. I’ve been trying to help them as much as I can. RUTH MATHESON, P.O. Box 138, Rake, IA 50465 Tel: 641-566-3369. I celebrated my 100th birthday on June 8th with my family and friends (SEE PHOTO # 4) We had the party at the American Legion on Bay Street in Sag Harbor. My daughter, Jane was there with her children, Janice, Susan and Michelle, and Michelle’s daughter, Strye. They traveled from Washington State. There were also many nieces, grandchildren and great-grand children. It was a moving milestone for me! Thanks to all who attended. HILDA “TILLIE” HILDRETH, 15 Cove Road, Sag Harbor, NY 11963 Tel: 631-725-0301. In January 2003, we enjoyed several weeks in Florida seeing friends in Vero Beach, Stuart and Jupiter and having a reunion of our 2 families in Fort Lauderdale, the venue for our wedding in 1959. Next, was the Hildreth Holiday in Spain with some of our cousins during the month of March which included tours of Costa del Sol, Granada, Seville, Cordoba, Toledo, Madrid and Barcelona with a side trip to Morocco in Africa. As usual, we spent the summer with "sun and surf" in Montauk NY where Joan hosted a party to celebrate Ron's 70th birthday. Early in September was the National Reunion of the Hildreth Family Page 2 Association held in Colorado, and our family members visited, among others, the Air Force Academy, Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Estes Park, Vail Ski Resort, Black Canyon, Million Dollar Highway, Narrow Gauge Railroad, Mesa Verde National Park and Four Corners Monument. Our own "Hildreth Highlight" of the year was the wedding of our son, Jeffrey Cashman Hildreth, on September 27 to Jaime Elizabeth Vassallo at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Philadelphia PA with a subsequent reception at the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue Hotel.(SEE PHOTO # 5) On December 31, Ron retired from the law firm of Baker Botts where he was a partner specializing in Patent Law; however, he is still an Adjunct Professor at St. John's School of Law. We are proud grandparents. JANICE HLIDRETH HELLER, 963 Trumpet Ct., Davidsonville, MD 21035 Tel: 301261-7439 [email protected] We went to Alaska in August 2003 (SEE PHOTO # 6). The trip was a present from our children for our 50th wedding anniversary. We had a wonderful time, saw beautiful country, many glaciers. Went on a train trip from Anchorage to Seward, then on a boat out to the Ocean. Saw seals, many seabirds and a whale too! The Aquarium in Seward was very interesting. In Anchorage we went to a native museum, very good too! Drove up the Matanuska Valley and to the Matanuska glacier. The week we were in Alaska went all too fast. The people were very nice and the food was great too! We really can recommend a trip to Alaska! ROBERT AND GISELA HILDRETH, 20975 Highway 91 South, Dillon, MT 59725. GEORGE A. HILDRETH, 78, of Marlborough and formerly of Natick both in MA, died on February 11, 2004, after a period of declining health. His wife of nearly 50 years, Rosalia “Lilly” (Sciortino) Hildreth, preceded him in death in 1997. Born in Framingham MA, George was the son of the late George and Alice (Cormier) Hildreth. He graduated with high honors as a member of Sigma Epsilon Rho from Northeastern University in 1957. He retired in 1986 from High Voltage Engineering Corporation in Burlington where he had been employed for 40 years as a mechanical engineer. A veteran of World War II, he served as a special agent in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps stationed in Italy. As a member of the executive board of the Hildreth Family Association, George made significant contributions to our organization, such as maintaining the computer records for current members, printing address labels from the computer, and distributing the Hildreth Highlights. These contributions have been invaluable to the successful operation of the HFA. George was extremely proud of his Hildreth Heritage. He was dedicated not only to his immediate family, but also to all of us in his extended family throughout the United States. We will miss him especially his three children, George “Jay” Hildreth, of Derry, NH, Pamela Simpson Lussier, of Woodstock, CT, and Cynthia Bremer, of Lunenburg, MA; his grandchildren, Cory and Cassandra Hildreth of Clinton, MA, Heather, Timothy and Jennifer Simpson of Woodstock, CT, and Kristen, Rebecca and Jacob Bremer of Lunenburg, MA; his loving companion, Marjorie Moulton of Marlborough, and her sons, Dana and Scott Moulton; and his three brothers, Donald Hildreth of Nevada, Richard Hildreth of Ashland, MA, and Norman Hildreth of Dennis, MA. His sister, Barbara (Hildreth) Camille, died in 1997. During World War II, when BARBARA HILDRETH heard an air raid siren, she would get on her bicycle and pedal down Ocean Road in Bridgehampton, NY to the beach to look for German planes. It was her role in the United States Coast Guard’s “Eastern Shield” early warning system, said her daughter, Margaret Hildreth Griffin of Bridgehampton. She died at the age of 89. She was born in Shelburne Falls, MA, on June 16, 1913, to Tilly and Rev. Waldo Burgess. A graduate of Bridgehampton High School who attended Adelphi University, Barbara worked as a nurse’s aide at Southampton Hospital during World War II. She was a clerk for the Town of Southampton. Barbara was involved with the Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church. She loved playing bridge. In addition to her daughter, Barbara is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Burgess Hill and four grandchildren, Jeanne Denise Griffin-Maynard, Kathleen Graham Griffin, Douglas L. Bormuth and Lynn Bormuth Bennett. Mrs. Hildreth’s husband, John Topping Hildreth, predeceased her as did her daughter, Jeanne Hildreth Bormuth. VIVIAN H. TARKINGTON died on June 3, 2003 in Littleton, CO. She was born on April 16, 1909, in Chicago, IL. Page 4 The saddest event of my life was the loss of my beautiful daughter, Sandra, on Jan. 21, 2003. She died of a rare heart problem, Long Q-T Syndrome. A memorial service was held in Sterling, MA. As she wished, her ashes will be scattered in PEI, Wyoming and Assateague. CAROLYN E. MYRICK, PO Box 220, Temple, NH 03084, Tel: 603-878-3183 [email protected] About a week after returning from the Hildreth Reunion, Greg fell and sustained a concussion, broken rib, punctured lung, and broken hip. Patient is doing well. Plans are under way for a two week vacation in Florida in February. (SEE PHOTO #8), LINWOOD “GREG” & PAULINE HILDRETH, 449 Tate Rd, Corinth, ME 04427 Tel: 207-285-3077. I am the grandson of Olivia (Hildreth) Beyer and Jacob Beyer and the son of Robert P. Beyer. My wife, Wendy, and I have a daughter, Haleigh Elizabeth Beyer born on 9-16-84, and a son, Jacob Bradley Beyer born on 6-19-91. 2003 was a very busy year. It was Haleigh's last year at East Hampton High School. She was class president for 3 years, was student association president, started a dance team and danced in the Macy's Parade on Thanksgiving 2002, did the choreography and lead parts in plays, played in the band, sang in 3 choruses, and went to Florida with thousands of teens on a talent/fashion fest. Above all, she is a kid with respect and decency who is now in the University of NC at Wilmington. We'll brag about our son, Jake, at a later time. On September 3, Wendy and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. Sadly, Wendy's mother died on Nov. 3. BRAD & WENDY BEYER, PO Box 1284, Bridgehampton, NY 11932 Tel 631-5377064 FAX 631-537-5860, [email protected] We enjoyed year 2003 with health and happiness. (SEE PHOTO #14) Annie, age 5, is enjoying kindergarten, ballet and Daisy Girl Scouts. She loves to swim, ski and skate. Our other daughter, Mary Jane, age 2, goes to school once a week and is always ready to have fun! She enjoys coloring, swimming and playing hide-and-go-seek. Joe and I are doing well. We are expecting our third baby in Aug. 2004. ELIZABETH HILDRETH SCULLY, 120 Wickham Rd, Garden City, NY 11530 Ed and Eathal Hildreth were busy keeping up with our 16 grandchildren and their sport and school events. Our two oldest grandchildren graduated from high school. One is serving a mission in Argentina for his church and the other is enrolled in Computer Engineering at college. Two other boys achieved their Eagle Rank in scouting. We did some construction at our cabin up at Medicine Lodge and at our home in Butte. Our big project for 2003 was gathering family history. We hope to publish a 600 page Hildreth-Olsen History book this spring. ED & EATHAL HILDRETH, 122 Renz Dr, Butte MT 59701 Tel: 406- 4943017 [email protected] (this will change in a couple of months when we can get a broadband cable provider) My church e-mail: [email protected] My three daughters and two granddaughters joined me in flying back east to celebrate Tillie's 100th birthday. We stayed at the Blue Haven Motel in Montauk at the suggestion of Ron Hildreth-good place. Ron invited us to the Blessing of the Fleet in Montauk after the party I hosted at the American Legion in Sag Harbor. Tillie still lives in her own home on North Haven with a companion. Her mind is very active and her long term memory great. JANE HILDRETH KELLEY, 3402 I St. NE #I-203, Auburn WA 98002 Phone/fax: 253- 939-6530 [email protected] 2003 was a good year, if you overlook the heart stints which were installed, and they were probably an improvement over the alternative. We enjoyed the trip with the Hildreth Family Association with the reunion in Colorado. (SEE PHOTO # 7) Met some good people and saw a lot of interesting places. We thank Ron and Joan Hildreth for all they do to set up and conduct the trip. Also, thanks to our great bus driver. He did a great job also. Enjoyed making the acquaintance of fellow Hoosier, Bill Harms. We are happy about a 2004 event in Charleston. We expect our second grandchild about July 14, 2004. May God nurse me along until then and some more. God Bless all you Hildreths and kin. RICHARD HILDRETH, 2026 Round Barn Ct., Anderson, IN 46017 Tel 765-376-4459, Office: 765-648-6532 [email protected] We are looking forward to a healthy 2004.We spent most of 2003 recuperating from various illnesses and operations ending the year with both of us down with flu at the same time over Christmas. (We did have shots.) We hated to miss the Colorado trip but it was unavoidable. We are looking to the reunion this year in Page 5 Colorado. Wishing a healthy and prosperous year to everyone until we meet again. DON & DOROTHY HILDRETH, 735 E. High Street, Rockwell City, IA 50579 Tel: 712-2979931 [email protected] In June 2003 Larry and I attended my 60th class reunion from University of Massachusetts. Last March we bought a power boat at Palm Beach, FL and cruised on it to Narragansett Bay, RI where we enjoyed it all summer. Then in September we waited out Hurricane Isabel on the Connecticut River, then cruised south enjoying the Intracoastal Waterway, then across Lake Okeechobee in central Florida and on to St. Petersburg where we have been living on the boat. ALICE & LARRY SHEPARD, PO Box 587, St. Petersburg, FL 33731-0587 Tel: 904-612-1511 FAX: 904-613-4368 [email protected] Last July, we went to Briksdalsbreen, a glacier in Norway close to Geiranger fjord. The glaciers, waterfalls and snowcapped mountains were just breathtaking. The girls enjoyed it so much that they’d love to go back next year. (SEE PHOTO #11) HANNA & MARK HILDRETH, 29 Contessa Ct, Port Washington, NY 11777 Tel: 631-331-5271. I’m in my second year back home in Mississippi. I have gone to work as an editor for Tonya Zavasta at BR Publishing. Being an editor is not a stretch for a former English professor, but the joke on me is that Tonya writes health and cookbooks. As many of you know, my culinary skills start and stop with broiling a steak! SHARRON K. CARRELL, 7693 Bramble Lane, Walls, MS 38680-8944 Tel: 662-781-0294 [email protected] I celebrated my 75th birthday on January 25th, 2004. My sons, Greg and Kenny Cristman, and their wives, Cindy and Cathie, took me out to dinner to a lovely restaurant. My grandchildren, Alex and Julia, were also with us. We had a delicious dinner, and lively conversation, while a man sang a lot of wonderful songs that had been very popular with my generation. We then went back to Cindy and Greg’s home for a while. They presented me with a beautiful necklace and a very pretty pair of earrings. Greg and Cindy are also HFA members, and enjoy reading about all of the Hildreth shenanigans! BETTY BALL, 159 Jennings Ave., Patchogue, NY 11772 Tel: 631-475-3729. Bill and I took a cruise from San Juan, PR to the So.Caribbean in March 2003. We stopped in Aruba, Curacao, St. Thomas and St. Maartin. It was a wonderful get away from the cold New York winter. In July we spent a week at the Jersey shore with family and friends. We take over wherever we go with more than 30 of us storming the beach for some sun, surf and sand. Another great vacation. In October, Bill celebrated his 65th birthday with a gathering of children, grandchildren and friends. His insistence that there be no celebration was not adhered to, and a good time was had by all at the Chart House in Dobbs Ferry, NY. The evening started off with a black out and our surprise was that there was no electricity in the entire area. As family and friends arrived, Bill’s surprise continued to grow and we had to decide where to take the entourage if the power didn’t come back on soon. Fortunately for us, it did and we were able to enjoy the scenic Hudson River views in a restaurant almost completely to ourselves. It was a good thing because the grandkids, ages 18 months to 11 years were hard to contain. We wish all the Hildreth cousins good health. JANET & BILL HILDRETH, 859 Belleville Dr., Valley Cottage, NY 10989 Sarah Barwood Hoover and Neal Alan Hoover on 16 December 2002. Her name is Colby Elisabeth. Our second grandchild, another girl, Morgan Elizabeth, was born to Becky Chiott Barwood and Justin Carroll Barwood on 11 February 2003. (SEE PHOTO #9) Descendants of Herman Jonathan Hildreth (born 26 May 1827, Herkimer, NY), John Thaddeus Hildreth and Mary Elizabeth Hildreth Denison, had a reunion at our home in Vermont in July 2003 and attending were Judy and Wendell Barwood, Jan and John Brown, Paige and Pappy Gillett Hawkes, Jill Devins and Cindy Cameron. FAX: 516-775-7714 Last August, I finally made the decision to move to Des Moines. Choosing Des Moines was a difficult decision as it would have been great to be close to Terry, Jean and Jon, but Colorado was so far from everyone else, including my Seymour friends and my cousins in Northern Iowa. Then too, I have three grandchildren and four great grands – one of them “brand” new—living here. Thanksgiving, I went to Omaha with grandson, Colin, and family and spent the day with my sister and her family. CHARLOTTE SCOTT, 3520 Grand Ave., Sargent Apt.#154, Des Moines, IA 50312 Tel: 515-271-6549. Roy and Darlene had a very good 2003. As always, we seemed to be too busy. Ray remodeled an apartment, built a horse barn and is finishing building a 4plex. We were grateful for a reprieve from work to attend the Hildreth Colorado reunion. It was a good time and well worth the money. Our son, Bryce, married Hazel Monares last July. Our grand daughter, Brandee Thornton, married Kendall Bert last June. So our family continues to grow. We still found time to roam the mountains on 4 wheelers and horses. We had two nice family reunions – one in July and one in November. We hope to be able to attend the Hildreth reunion in Charleston once again to renew our acquaintances with everyone. We wish all a healthy, happy 2004. RAY & DARLENE HILDRETH, 15 Nick Lane, Dillon, Montana 59725 Tel: 406-683-5398 Our big event of 2003 was the marriage of our great-granddaughter, Alisha Schlinker, and Rick Lawson when both were in the USAF and stationed in Germany. She was then sent to Kuwait for 6 months at the beginning of the Iraqi War. After being sent back to Germany to join her husband, both returned home for more training to be deployed to South Korea, where they are stationed for 1 year. Alisha is the granddaughter of Howard and Louise Hildreth. HOOT & BESSIE HILDRETH, 513 Bellwood Lane, Modesto, CA 95356 2003 was a fabulous year for the O’Keeffe family!! (SEE PHOTO #13) After only 18 months living in our “new” house, we moved again to a “bigger” house which is only 3 blocks away from my parents! (Ron and Joan Hildreth). The house was in perfect “move-in” condition and felt like “home sweet home” immediately! I feel like I’ve “come home” because this is the neighborhood I grew up in as a child. I have such fond memories here, climbing trees, playing with friends and bicycling around this area. I find myself telling many tales of my childhood to my 7 year old, Katie, and 4 year old, Kelly. I feel like I’ve come “full circle”. They are so lucky that the grandparents live so close! My Page 6 parents are always a fixture at our house. My husband, Brice, was just chosen out of 10,000 people in the Mandarian Oriental Hotel Company to receive his MBA – what an honor! He has spent many hours studying at the Library and traveling to Hong Kong for weeks at a time, but in the end it will be well worth it! I am soooo proud of his achievements! The girls are great! Katie is receiving her first Holy Communion in May. She is still Irish step dancing too. Kelly loves to sing, dance and play with her friends. They are growing up so quickly! Happy 2004. We can’t wait for summer! It was a very long, cold, icy winter in NY. JANE HILDRETH O’KEEFFE, 213 Kilburn Rd, Garden City, NY 11530 Tel: 516747-6369 [email protected] The fires last year were awful. We could see the flames from our upstairs windows on the hills. The fire was also only 2 miles from us and burned 51 houses here in Poway. Our house was okay. Two days later, we found out Kent’s house was still standing. About 349 houses burned in Kent’s area. Scripps Ranch, 6 on their street. Our prayers were answered. After missing the last two Hildreth reunions, we and Kent’s family (Kent, Linda, and children, Spencer and Trisha) left San Diego in our RV for Colorado. On our way, I fell off my chair very hard as Beach rounded a curve (the chair was NOT tied down). The x-rays showed a broken collar bone. Then on to Colorado Springs where we met everyone on the first night. Beach and I did not get on the Hildreth Bus the next day to tour the state since I went to the ER again. Several days later, we met up with the group in Mesa Verde and saw the Cliff dwellings. The moral of this happening is to Tie Down That Chair!!!
