As many residents are aware, legal action by some condominium associations against the community- through the Recreation Area, the Board of Governors and management- has been going on for some time. While perhaps an oversimplification, at the heart of the matter is whether or not the Board of Governors has the authority to enter into agreements for the benefit of the entire community. Depending upon the outcome of this issue, some of the funds currently being held in the community’s reserve funds may have to be returned to the condominium associations. Recently a meeting was held between all parties to open a dialogue that will hopefully lead to resolution of this dispute. During this discussion a few things became very evident: there is misinformation and misunderstanding about the issues by both parties; there is a feeling of mistrust by some of the parties in relation to the others; and most importantly, there have been public statements made that are inflammatory, inaccurate and untrue. This last item was specifically directed at this writer relative to comments that I have made in the past, generalizing my personal feelings about this situation. Regardless of the fact that I am being sued personally, my use of this column for purposes of venting whatever frustration I may feel about this PETS NOTICE Kings Point is a “No Pet Community” Please notify your guests that they will be turned away if they have a pet in their vehicle. Thank you, Vesta Property Services 10 | News & Revues matter is inexcusable and I sincerely apologize to all those effected by my remarks. Furthermore, my comments resulted in many people being unintentionally included who were not the cause of this conflict. To each of you I extend my apology and hope that the strides made during our recent meeting can be built upon to resolve the differences of opinion surrounding this case. The cable contract is a good agreement, benefiting the entire community and setting rates for the next six and one-half years that are better than the previous agreement. If continued, the previous agreement would still be in effect for another year and a half; the rate at the end of that term would be in excess of what the new agreement amount will be in 2017; the associations would continue to pay Prime Management or their subsidiary a 5% fee and the community would not have received the signing bonus that is currently a part of the community’s reserves. Neighbors should not have to endure conflicts such as this with each other. In times such as this, Management should not do anything other than stand ready to assist everyone in resolving community wide issues. We will do this and hope that the community can come together and resolve this matter to the benefit of all. Thank you. 34015_CRS_Apr11 3/21/11 9:23 AM Page 11 Kings Point | 11 34015_CRS_Apr11 3/21/11 9:23 AM Page 12 12 | News & Revues 34015_CRS_Apr11 3/21/11 9:23 AM Page 13 April Movies movies SOCIAL NETWORK Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake Monday, April 4th 7:30PM Tuesday, April 5th 1:00PM cc PG-13 120 Min A chronicle of the founding of Facebook, the social-networking Web site. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BURLESQUE Cher, Christina Aguilera Monday, April 11th 7:30PM Tuesday, April 12th 1:00PM cc PG-13 119 Min Movie Ticket $1.00 WOODY ALLEN’S YOU WILL MEET A TALL DARK STRANGER Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts, Josh Brolin Monday, May 9th 7:30PM Tuesday, May 10th 1:00PM cc R 98 Min Follows a pair of married couples, and their daughter and husband, as their passions, ambitions, and anxieties lead them into trouble and out of their minds. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– LIFE AS WE KNOW IT A small-town girl ventures to Los Angeles and finds her place in a neoburlesque club run by a former dancer. High blood pressure is sometimes referred to as “the silent killer” because of this fact. For this reason alone it’s a good idea to go in to see your doctor regularly. If you have a history of high blood pressure, you can then take further steps to keep a closer eye on it. There are a few different possible high blood pressure symptoms out there to keep an eye out for. High blood pressure can occur at any age and is almost as common in women as in men. Some of the most common high blood pressure symptoms are frequent headaches, dizziness, fatigue, nausea and blurry vision. One of the least talked about and least known high blood pressure symptom is ED. Since arteries run into and through virtually every area of your body, high blood pressure symptoms can vary considerably. If you are experiencing one or more of the above symptoms you should see a doctor about it to lower your risk of serious injury. Aerobic Exercise Research has shown that regular aerobic exercise boosts the immune system, increases endorphins, lowers high blood pressure and cholesterol, decreases the risk for developing cardiac disease, diabetes, obesity and various forms of cancer. Physical exercise promotes mental health, reduces anxiety and stress, and promotes unity of mind, body and spirit. Exercise programs can be tailored to fit anyone’s particular fitness needs. For more information on our personal fitness programs contact the Service Desk or the Staff Office. (499-3335 Ext 214 or 225) I’m cleaning apartments in your neighborhood and can do yours. This great weather has produced one of the busiest golfing months for quite some time at Kings Point. The Par 3 course was exceptionally busy and has shown significant growth over the past few years. On February 26, 2011 the Kings Point Community hosted the Third Annual Community Golf Shoot-out Tournament. This year’s event had 20 foursomes playing which included six foursomes of ladies. Communities from the surrounding area challenged the defending Kings Point men and ladies for bragging rights as the best golfers to play at Kings Point. All though the Kings Point women were again victorious, the Kings Point men did not fare so well. The King Point winning women’s team was represented by Fran Garnes, Lucy Hull, Gloria Carroll and Patti Micewicz. Fran Garnes also shot the women’s low gross of the day. The winning men’s team hails from Tropic Harbor, a community located on the east side of Delray Beach. Tropic Harbor has been playing at Kings Point as a group for the last 6+ years on Friday afternoon. Their winning team consisted of Jay Coppola, Skip Georgi, Jim Kirby and John Hertvik. The men’s low gross honors went to Larry Levenberg who hails from Emerald Pointe, Larry shot an extremely respectable gross of 64. Contact Head Golf Professional Bob Schneider at 499-0140 KINGS POINT From left to right Luch Hull, Patti Micewicz and Gloria Carroll Fran Garnes missing from photo Please remember “Golf Etiquette” is as much a part of the game as hitting that long straight drive or making a tricky birdie putt. Golf etiquette not only means being quiet and still while someone is hitting; it also means raking foot prints in sand traps, fixing ball marks on the green and placing sand in divots. In the words of golfing great Arnold Palmer, “always leave the course in better condition than you found it”. For all of the golfers who insist on fishing for balls, please remember our local rules allow no more than a two-minute search and this is only for the ball you are playing. Be advised that the use of range balls is not permitted on Kings Point golf courses. Even though the temperatures have dropped compared to the summer months and the sun may not feel quite as strong; always take proper precautions by wearing a hat and using plenty of sunscreen. In addition, drink plenty of fluids while you are out on the golf course or while doing any outdoor activity. The heat in Florida can quickly lead to dehydration; water and PowerAde are always available in our vending machines and at the Snack Bar. The 11th season of free golf lessons will be finishing up in April. If you are new to the game or have a non-golfing friend, contact Bob Schneider our head golf professional to take advantage of this great opportunity. There is still time to sign up for the lessons at the Par 3 course. Please feel free to call at 381-2037 if you have any questions or suggestions for the golf courses. —Bill Guimond For Golf Membership information contact: Men’s Golf Club membership chairman Eddie Ober 496-3163 Ladies Golf Club membership chairwoman Gloria Levine 496-3712 Par 3 Golf Course 7:00 AM - Ladies’ Tournament - Mondays 7:00 AM Men’s Tournament - Tuesdays & Wednesdays Executive Golf Course 7:00 AM - Men’s Tournament - Thursdays & Fridays 8:00 AM - Ladies’ Tournament - Wednesdays Kings Point | 19 34015_CRS_Apr11 3/21/11 9:23 AM Page 20 minutes BOARD OF GOVERNORS KINGS POINT RECREATION AREA Minutes February 3, 2011 Happy Birthday Art Gelfand and Miriam Guz Present: Delores Birch, Jerry Flomen, Art Gelfand, Mitch Goldstein, Miriam Guz, Estelle Hoffman, Mike Hyman, Frank Iovine, Ron Kern, Elinor Lichten, Steve Mencher, Libby Merola, Rena Port, Barry Senoff, Camille Wolff Absent: Stan Cohen and Frank Surface Procedural & Organizational Matters 1. We have a file for every Kings Point apartment and in each file there is a small pocket where the IDs are kept. When you come back to Kings Point, simply come to the ID office and we will return the ID cards. We also have a locked “mail box” located just outside the Administration Building. You may drop them in the box at your convenience. Someone from the office checks the box every morning. I make this suggestion because we have seasonal residents forgetting to bring their ID cards with them when they return to Kings Point. They are not happy when they have to pay a $50.00 replacement fee for each card. Guest ID cards are also available at the ID office for guests staying with residents in their condominium unit. A Guest photo ID card allows the person to enter all recreation facilities without being accompanied by their resident. As always, the resident remains responsible for the conduct of their guests. To obtain a guest ID card, a resident is required to accompany their guest(s) to the ID office. The guest must present a photo ID showing residency at least 50 miles away from Kings Point. Guests under the age of 18 will not be issued a Guest ID as no children are permitted in the clubhouses. The ID costs $10.00 and may not exceed thirty days. Another thirty days may be obtained at an additional cost only with the approval from an association officer. Each guest is allowed a maximum of sixty days within a 12 month period. If you have any questions regarding the ID policies and procedures, feel free to come by our office or call us at 499-3335, ext.117. staff office news by Chris Banker We would like to wish all of you “Snowbirds” a safe trip back home and a Healthy Summer/Fall Season. See below for Dress Code Policy. • Arrive on time, enter and be seated prior to the start of the performance • Stay seated during the performance. Due to strict Fire Codes, there is “‘No Standing Room” in the theatre. • Adjust hearing aids, listening devices and turn off cell phones so they cannot be heard by other theatre-goers. • Use restraint in the application of perfumes, colognes and/or after-shave as many of our patrons suffer from allergies. • Keep your feet off chairs and theatre railings to prevent unnecessary wear on them. • Wait until the final act concludes before exiting the theatre. DON’TS • Do not use cameras or recording devices as copyright laws strictly forbid them. • Do not talk during the performance. • Do not sing or hum along with the performers. • Absolutely no food, drinks or candy is allowed in the theatre. P lease r u o t r o p sup s r e s i t r e v Ad • Do not leave your seat and head for the exit until the performance is complete, the performers have left the stage, and the house lights have come up* (*) NOTE: This is the major complaint made by our theatre-going public. It indicates total disrespect for the performers and creates an embarrassment for the rest of the Kings Point audience. Also, because the house lights are not up, there is a greater risk to patrons walking in the darkened theatre. RULES OF THE HOUSE For anyone attending Social Events (i.e. Shows, Dances, Lectures) in the Theatre and/or Ballrooms, the following clothing items are NOT PERMITTED: Shorts, Tank Tops, T-Shirts, Jogging or Sweat Suits, House Coats, Hats (except small head coverings respecting religious beliefs). Shorts may be worn to Movies and Bingo only. No shorts will be permitted in the Theatre during shows, in the Ballroom during dances, or in the Main Lobby on show and dance nights. While the Division saw the total number of complaints filed during the 2010 calendar year increase by 7% to just over 40,000, more than 88% of those complaints were successfully closed or resolved. Data ascertained from these complaints can be extremely valuable in helping to determine the direction of future Investigations and targeted education. Already this year, the Division's Bureau of Investigations has assisted local law enforcement in central Florida with three separate enforcement actions against telemarketers after seeing the number of complaints for this category increase by 138% in 2010. This increase was, by far, the most dynamic change among our top ten complaint categories. The next largest increase was in Real Estate Broker/Salesperson complaints, which rose by 36%, followed by a 32% rise in Medical complaints over the previous year. The only other categories that showed a significant upward trend were Do Not Call and Motor Vehicle Repair complaints, both increasing by 17%. Conversely, complaints involving Travel/Vacation Plans showed a downward trend for the second year in a row, decreasing by 29% from 2009 to 2010 after a 22% reduction from 2008 to 2009. Many of our previous editions of the Florida Consumer E-Newsletter have been dedicated to topics that focus on these complaint categories. Consumers are encouraged to peruse the archived editions by visiting www.800helpfla.com. They can be extremely useful when seeking advice on a particular subject area. Regardless of the complaint subject matter, here are a few general tips for all consumers in our great state: 1. Be skeptical immediately of any unsolicited telephone call, text, postcard/letter or e-mail. 2. Be wary of anyone requiring that payment be made through wire transfer, money order or by sending cash with an overnight courier. This is usually one of the first indications of a scam. Purchases made by credit card will usually allow the consumer the ability to dispute charges, thus offering the most protection. 3. Get details in writing (terms and conditions, cancellation policies etc.) before signing any agreements, sending money or giving out any credit card or bank information. 4. Check a company's complaint history and how any complaints were resolved before agreeing to do business with them. This can be done by visiting www.800helpfla.com and utilizing the "Business/Complaint Lookup", or by calling 1-800-HELP-FLA (435- 7352) and allowing a member of the Consumer Assistance Center to retrieve the information. If the particular business that you are checking on is regulated by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, be sure to find out if they are properly registered. 5. If you are being solicited to contribute to a charitable organization, ask if the person contacting you is a paid solicitor/fundraiser. If the answer is yes, as much as 80-90% or more of your contribution may actually be going to this paid solicitor/fundraiser, not the charitable organization. In these instances, if you are inclined to give, it may be more prudent to contact the charitable organization itself and make your donation directly to them. Consumers can utilize the "Gift Givers Guide" at www.800helpfla.com or call the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Consumer Assistance Center at 1-800-HELP-FLA (435-7352) to inquire about the registration status or financial information for a particular charity. 6. Research and verify where an offer is originating. Try to find the physical address (not just a P.O. Box) and phone number of the company that has contacted you. With VoIP and other web-based technologies, it can sometimes be difficult to determine where someone is physically located. Look for negative reviews online by typing the company's name, followed by the word "complaints" or "scams" into an Internet search engine. Keep in mind, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has developed the A-Z Resource Guide, an online directory of government-related information that is, by far, one of the most useful tools available in the quest to inform, educate and protect Florida's consumers. Users are encouraged to utilize the search function within the guide to let the database do the looking for you. Simply typing in a key word or two into the subject field will allow you to narrow your search in order to find needed services and assistance fast - and it's online 24 hours a day. Let the A-Z Resource Guide steer you toward the proper resource for assistance. Information can be accessed directly by visiting www.800helpfla.com, or by calling 1-800-HELP-FLA (435-7352) Monday through Friday during business hours and asking for help from a member of the Consumer Assistance Center staff.
