politics, and ceremonial dance. Biggers is the creative director for
the band’s rotating cast of musicians and performance artists.

Sanford Biggers: Subjective Cosmology
September 9, 2016 through January 1, 2017
For his solo exhibition Subjective Cosmology, Sanford Biggers will
create an immersive interactive experience throughout MOCAD,
incorporating video installation, visual art objects, and new media.
Imagined as an unseen world made visible, the exhibition gives
physical form to hidden landscapes where the past, present, and
future synergize into an atemporal experience. Subjective Cosmology
can be seen as the link between the pieces in Biggers’ three-part
film suite Shuffle, Shake, Shatter. His recent works challenge the
viewer to address pressing social issues and reimagine history
through sculpture, painting, mixed media, and performance. Biggers
creates art that upends traditional narratives and creates platforms
for discussion about topics ranging from hip-hop to Buddhism and
American history.
This exhibition has been organized by MOCAD and is curated by
Executive Director Elysia Borowy-Reeder.
DETROIT CITY
A multi-year program of exhibitions (Detroit Affinities), performances
(Detroit Stages), educational programs and publications (Detroit
Speaks), Detroit City places local artists in a global context while
investigating the city’s current artistic, political, cultural, and
economic realities. Presenting sequential solo exhibitions by Detroit
artists and artists from elsewhere, the Detroit Affinities series seeks
to reveal correspondences, similarities, and differences in the artists’
respective practices.
Detroit Affinities: Matthew Angelo Harrison
September 9, 2016 through January 1, 2017
Matthew Angelo Harrison does not think in closed and resolved
terms, but embraces open-endedness. While firmly participating in
conversations around the African and African-American experience,
his work has qualities that are universal. Harrison’s 3D printers
produce clay replicas of traditional African masks. The tension
between authentic and inauthentic, organic and nonorganic, and the
pulls between repetition and difference, original and clone, nature
and culture, all play a major
part in Harrison’s artistic considerations.

Gary Simmons, presented by Culture Lab Detroit + MOCAD

FILM
Elections in American Art
The Unseen
Wednesday, September 21, 8pm
Admission: $5 (free for members),
buy advance tickets at mocadetroit.org
The Unseen explores the soul and roots of Detroit Hip-Hop
production, mirroring the sketchpad format of a beat tape. Loosely
acting as a prequel to the LA-based documentary, All Ears,
The Unseen provides rare insights into a scene that has remained
distant from the public eye while birthing some of the culture’s
richest and most influential sounds. The film glimpses the hidden
and elusive characteristics inherent in a city often depicted in a one
dimensional light.
TALK
Huey Copeland Sun Ra Lecture
Friday, September 23, 7pm
Admission: Free ($5 suggested donation)
Huey Copeland (PhD, History of Art, University of California,
Berkeley, 2006) is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in The
Graduate School and Associate Professor of Art History at
Northwestern University, with affiliations in the Gender and Sexuality
Studies Program and the Department of African American Studies.
His writing focuses on modern and contemporary art with an
emphasis on articulations of blackness in the Western visual field.
In this lecture, Dr. Copeland explores Sun Ra’s representations of
space-time and their implications for contemporary artists. Copeland
argues that Ra’s thinking points us toward new criteria for the
evaluation of recent art that takes seriously both the recursiveness
and simultaneity of time as it unfolds within, beyond, and across the
black world.

ART AS SOCIAL FORCE
Inspired by Mike Kelley’s Mobile Homestead, MOCAD has embarked
on a multi-year examination of artists who seek to create
participatory and socially transformative art. Known primarily as
social practice, its practitioners freely blur the lines among art
making, performance, political activism, community organizing,
environmentalism, and investigative journalism, creating a deeply
participatory art form.
ART AS SOCIAL FORCE EXHIBITION
It’s Your Party
Mike Kelley’s Mobile Homestead
host Al Moran for a special exhibition opening and reception at one
of Detroit’s most creative art spaces. The exhibition Incidentals in
the Day World will feature artists: Caroline Achaintre, Ketuta AlexiMeskhishvili, Harry Dodge, Michaela Eichwald, Hannah Levy, and
Joanna Malinowska and is curated by Nichole Caruso. The artists in
Incidentals in the Day World utilize their incidental circumstances as
a buoyant lens for generating a greater potentiality by way of artistic
output. This special event will feature complimentary beverages,
strolling appetizers and an overview with the curator. Tickets at
mocadetroit.org. Proceeds from ticket sales support MOCAD’s
mission to present art at the forefront of contemporary culture.
WORKSHOP
Detroit Writes
September 9, 2016 through January 1, 2017
Don’t Swap Horses in the Middle of the Stream, In your Heart you
Know He’s Right, and Not Just Peanuts. Are these titles of country
songs or campaign slogans? If you guessed campaign slogans you’re
correct! But who won these elections and who lost? Find out this fall
when we celebrate the winners and losers alike with It’s Your Party,
an exhibition of presidential campaign memorabilia drawn from
the vast collection of Morry “The Button Man” Greener. Campaign
posters, bumper stickers, pennants, and other ephemera from
elections past and present will fill the Mobile Homestead.
In the garage we’ll be screening election related films and historical
debates and broadcasting the live coverage of the 2016 presidential
campaign. Join us for debate and election night parties where you
are welcome to commiserate or celebrate with your friends and
neighbors.
Sunday, September 25 and Sunday, October 9, 1pm–3pm
Admission: Free with registration at mocadetroit.org
Critical processing of art is a crucial part of developing a strong
personal art practice and an engaged eye as a viewer. Participants
in this workshop led by Detroit’s Essay’d collective, will learn
different approaches to arts writing, through applying them to the
work of renowned, and sometimes controversial, artist Sanford
Biggers. Highlights of the workshop will include a group discussion
of previous criticism of Biggers, an open interview with the artist
himself, and the opportunity to submit a 750 word essay. Selected
essays will be reviewed in a public editorial meeting and published
on the MOCAD website. People with varied abilities and interests are
encouraged to attend; there is room within every writer’s practice
for improvement, and we look forward to helping develop our critical
voices together!
DEPE SPACE RESIDENCY
EVENT

DEPE SPACE EXHIBITION
Dave Eggers: The Spirit of the Animals Is in the Wheels
November 4, 2016 through January 1, 2017
A bison barrels down Mack Ave. and a 12-point buck hoofs it
from Eastern Market to the Boggs School. Their unusual gaits—
paws attached to a bicycle’s front wheel—and their enthusiastic
passengers—school-aged Detroiters—are not the only reason these
pedicabs-turned-wildlife are turning heads. Artist and author Dave
Eggers, along with metal artist Ben Wolf, have built a herd of animalinspired vehicles for this exhibition focused on the intersection
of transportation and education in order to build awareness and
solutions to transportation challenges faced by students.
Presented by 826michigan and Safe Routes to School

Wall Writers
Wednesday, September 28, 8pm
Admission: $5 (free for members), buy advance tickets at
mocadetroit.org
Before artists such as Banksy and Shepard Fairey became household
names, there were the graffiti pioneers who laid the groundwork
to their success. Wall Writers is the story of the birth of graffiti
from 1967 to 1973. Narrated by film director John Waters, the film
explores not only early graffiti writing itself, but the writers creating
it and the culture that drove them to be recognized by society. From
graffiti’s humble beginnings in 1967 to the first painting to be sold in
1973, Wall Writers reveals the context of the start of a movement
that would eventually grow to transform city life, public transit,
public art, and ultimately visual art the world over.

Athi-Patra Ruga
Queenz in Exile: Of Avatars as Self-Preservation
Friday, November 4, 7pm
Admission: Free ($5 suggested donation)
Exploring the border-zones between fashion, performance and
contemporary art, Athi-Patra Ruga makes work that exposes and
subverts the body in relation to structure, ideology and politics.
Bursting with eclectic multicultural references, carnal sensuality and
a dislocated undercurrent of humor, his avatars, videos, tapestries
and photographic images create a world where cultural identity is
no longer determined by geographical origins, ancestry or biological
disposition, but is increasingly becoming a hybrid construct. During
this talk, the artist will discuss his work, the relationship between the
mind and body, and the connection between surreality and sex. This
talk is presented in partnership with the Penny Stamps School of Art
and Design.
