GATHERED FROM THE WEB
There’s an old saying that says, “Home is where the heart
is.” For me, that’s especially true about my Shrine home at
Al Kader. The Nobles and Ladies of Al Kader are like an
extended family that has welcomed us and made us feel
comfortable. Al Kader is our home, whether at the Shrine
Center in Wilsonville; or visiting a Shrine Club in Prineville.
From a picnic at Lincoln City to a football game in Baker
City, we’ve been blessed with the hospitality of our friends.
Over this year, the members of the Board and I have been
working to make our home a comfortable, attractive and
efficient Center for everyone to enjoy. We’ve traveled to some of the
distant reaches of our homestead to visit with friends in far places. Many
“home improvement” projects have been completed at the Wilsonville
Shrine Center and there are plans for others being discussed.
As in any home, all of the family members have been asked to contrib-
ute ideas and their assistance to make improvements and to help us
grow. It’s been so gratifying to see so many step up and lend their hands
and hearts to our cause.
Our family is facing some tough challenges ahead, just like any other.
There are limited amounts of funds to run the Center, care for the
facilities and provide the level of activity we’ve come to enjoy. It’s imperative that everyone becomes involved in the fund-raising that supports our
home, as well as providing for our great philanthropy. The Mustang Raffle
tickets are a win-win for the Center and for the individuals selling them.
After expenses, a significant amount could be added to the budget for
2009 if all the tickets are sold. That, alone, could make up for the deficit in
earnings from our investment accounts, which have taken a significant hit
in the current economy.
Likewise, we face losses of another sort, just like any family. We are
saddened each month by the passing of beloved members of our
fraternity. We miss them and know that they would want the family of
Shrinedom to grow and to remember them fondly for their contributions.
We have opportunities before us all the time to welcome new family
members. A word here, an act of charity or kindness there and your
example could inspire a new Mason or Shriner. Don’t hesitate to spread
the word of Masonry and the Shriners. We’ve got much to offer and our
family needs what those new members can offer us.
“True love is neither physical, nor romantic. True love is
an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will
not be.”

From The Director’s Corner
by Noble Dave Steele, 2008 Director of Units
Once again our Nobles and Ladies out in
Eastern Oregon treated the Nobility to a fine
time in Burns. Great food all weekend and fun
and friendship along with a long parade and an
awesome 4H /FFA Livestock Auction. Lots of
meat donated to the hospital again for the kids.
Thanks to all who participated.
We attended the Central Oregon Rendezvous
in Prineville after being behind our Chief Rabban on a beautiful
motorcycle ride through the countryside. He got there at least an
hour before the rest of us but we made it when the food was
being served. That was one of the best meals we have had in a
long time. Hospitality over there is wonderful and the food was
incredible.
Please try to attend the many activities planned in October. If you
support these events it will help several units with fund raising.
We cannot ask or depend on our Shrine to fund our units. It is up
to all of us to come up with ideas to raise money for the units and
part of the funds will go to help our Shrine Center. Our membership is declining and it is important to help each other.
When it comes to membership, it is our responsibility to recruit
new members to join Al Kader. We enjoy attending the many
functions and dinners but need more participation. To do so
means we need more members. Get out there and talk to the
Masons in your Lodges. Let them know what it means to be a
Shriner and how much we take care of our kids through our
fellowship and fun. I challenge all of you to get one Brother Mason
to become a Noble of the Mystic Shrine in the next year. Imagine
what that would do for our fraternity and the kids in the hospital.
The other part of our effort should be to ensure that all our current
Shriners learn about the different units of the Shrine. I am a
member of the Motor Escort Unit because I love riding motorcycles and we have an incredible unit full of Nobles who enjoy
having fun on the bikes. We ride the police bikes in parades and
other functions but ride our personal bikes with our Ladies.
I have been asked to join the Desert Patrol and have had the fun
of riding with them a few times. It was neat to ride on one of the 4
wheelers and when I get too old to ride the big ones, I would
consider it.
How about clowning around with the Kader Klowns? World
famous and unbelievably fun with the kids. Why not put on a white
face and a fun outfit to entertain children? Talk to the clowns
about the unit. You can be trained to have fun as a clown. Ask
them what pleasure they get out of being around the kids. We
need more of them.
Greeters? How neat it is to meet all the Nobles and Ladies at
each event. They even get to hug all our beautiful Ladies each
time they enter the Shrine Center.
Classic Cars Unit......Do you have a special or classic car to drive
in a parade. Gosh, all you have to do is drive and show it off.
Do you have any musical talent? We have some bands that need
you. Goof around with the Oriental band and wear gold shoes or
be in the Concert Band or Drum and Bugle Corps and play
awesome tunes with some of the finest. Play with the bands and
entertain us.
Prior military and enjoy being in a color guard or honor corridor for
the Potentate? Join the Al Kader Patrol and be a part of that
special team.
Try the Cyclowns if you can be funny and coordinated on a cycle.
The 21- 40 club is good for younger members and is lots of fun.
If you like memory work, try the Ritualist unit. We need them to do
our ceremonials. Come out and have fun with them.
Whatever you are interested in, we can make things happen for
you. All you have to do is be a part of one of the units and enjoy
the fun. Get involved. If we make it fun, more Masons will want to
be Shriners. Make it happen and have fun doing it.
Looking forward to seeing you soon.

I want to take a moment to tell you about a unique and wonderful
experience to which I was fortunate to take part in. That being the
groundbreaking for the expansion of our own Shrine Hospital in
Portland. To say the least, it was interesting time. There must
have been at least 100 Masons and Shriners (or more), including
the number one Shriner in the world Douglas E. Maxwell, Imperial
Potentate and several of his officers. Also in attendance were
Robert M. Richmond, M.W. Grand Master and several of his
officers, our own IS Dan Moyer Potentate of Al Kader, and several

The Recorder's Report
by Noble Hap Baldwin, Recorder
Let’s “Catch the Spirit”
What a beautiful Indian Summer we’ve been
enjoying. We are so blessed to live in the
Northwest with the distinct changes of the
Seasons. Following a busy Shrine summer I’d
like to say the building is still standing following
many a Quinceañera, Wedding Receptions,
Texas Hold ‘Em’ Parties and other activities that
have added to our coffers.
We are now embarking on our busiest three months of the year.
We have very active Shrine Clubs and Units preparing for annual
fundraisers that we should all support as faithfully as we are able.
These fundraisers for the most part promote “Catching Shrine
Kids Dreams” in a variety of ways. They are for the benefit of not
only that particular club or unit’s treasury, but; for their contribution
to the Shriners Hospital for Children. Money is given at the end of
the year, or often given for a particular Shrine Center project, i.e.
the building fund, the carpet and drapery fund, landscaping fund,
etc.. So please be grateful for new fundraising ideas and new
ways to come together and share our fun and the greatest
philanthropy in the world with our neighbors and friends while
helping a Club or Unit.
Speaking of fundraisers: Don’t forget our biggest fundraiser for
the year. The winning ticket will be drawn in December at the
Holiday Ball, December 20th. This is for the Chief Rabban’s Ford
Mustang 2008 V 6 Coupe Car Raffle. It behooves each one of us
to do our part in selling raffle tickets wherever we are. This is a
huge undertaking and we must all pull together to make this
successful. I know we can do it. Please bring in your stubs and
money to the office or hand it off to a Shriner coming into the
office. We will record the tickets against your name and/or your
club or unit. Thanks for all your efforts thus far.
stated meeting. And, we encourage you to attend our stated
meetings. These are important to the future of our organization
and your presence and participation is invaluable. That being
said, you do need a current year dues card to attend. Please be
one of the first to get your new dues card for 2009. A forewarning:
Imperial has once again tweaked the design of the dues card.
Your Lady’s card is separate. Don’t hesitate to call if you have any
problem with getting your dues card on time.
We have a BIG event coming up with the 2nd Annual Al Kader
Shrine Auction. Please participate in securing an item(s) for the
Auction. The date is Saturday, November 8th at Al Kader Shrine
Center with a full evening of festivities. Silent and Live Auction
items are being sought after. All money generated for this event
is going to the Shriners Hospital for Children to continue “Helping
Kids Defy the Odds.”
Remember our Imperial First Lady’s slogan this year is “Two
Hearts Combined… Children and the Shrine.”

OCTOBER
Many a ghost on the streets tonight,
With trick or treat on their mind.
Going from door to door I’m sure,
With something special in mind.
There goes a bat and a goblin too,
The finest we’ve ever seen.
But most of all be careful,
And remember, it’s Halloween.
Our Eastern and Central Shrine Clubs work hard to provide for
the Hospital’s pantry. In October we all look forward to the
celebration after many long hours of driving over the hills to
Wilsonville with goods to hear the final tally on money contributions as well as food items, clothing, toys, etc. Yes, it is a fun time
but I encourage each one of us to be thinking about bringing in
something to be added to the event. Perhaps we could all bring
in a sack of groceries, a case of canned food or a check from your
local grocery market to help with this important annual drive.
Your dues notices for 2009 should appear in your mail boxes the
middle of October. It is important to remember our obligation to
our organization. We strive for 100% on our dues return for the
year but also know there are unforeseen circumstances that
prevent us from being able to fulfill this obligation in a timely
fashion. If you have not received your 2009 dues card before
January, you are still able to participate in all activities except the

Al Kader Family Picnic
We had everything that it takes for a great Shrine Picnic--the Kader Klowns, the Oriental and
Concert Bands, the Drum and Bugle Corps. We had hot dogs, hamburgers, corn-on-the-cob
and had two serving lines with the IS Dan and Lady Jennifer handing out the plates...

...a beautiful day, suds and soft drinks, free rides for the kids, lots of room and tables, a very large and happy
crowd. What a fantastic turnout! IS Dan introduced the Divan. We had so many raffle prizes that it took 1st
Ceremonial Master Bill and Lady Shirley Newhouse over an hour to draw all of the numbers.

AL KADER PATROL
CONCERT BAND
Past Captain Jim Nielsen continues to recuperate from his recent
open heart surgery. At the present time no visitation or phone
calls. Cards can be mailed to Legacy Emanuel Hospital, 2801 N.
Gantenbein Ave, Portland, OR 97227, Room 5305. When Noble
Jim moves to a rehabilitation facility, I will e-mail the new address.
The Concert Band wound up its summer season at the Al Kader
family picnic held August 24 at Oaks Park in Portland. Thanks to
the guest musicians who filled our ranks. We appreciate your help
and look forward to seeing you next year. We had a perfect day,
thanks to the nice weather, the good food and great fraternal
feelings.
by Noble Bill Harris
by Noble Clem Norton
The Patrol’s annual picnic at Reeder Beach was well attended.
Our hats are off to our chefs who got wet while barbecuing the
steaks and chicken. There was plenty of good food prepared by
our Patrol Ladies. Past Captain Bob Keller, and his helper, Fred
Harding Jr. (a guest), kept our glasses full. Past Captain Bill
Beringer and Lady Sara Lee’s home made ice cream was
excellent and went well with the special cakes past Captain Jim
Willense and Lady Ellen provided.
While the Ladies were holding a baby shower for Lady Melissa
Potter, the Patrol held an abbreviated September meeting. At our
meeting, we welcomed two new Patrol members, Noble Gary
Garde and his Lady Lorraine and Noble Anthony (Tony) Schlee
and Lady Paulette are new Patrol members. Welcome aboard!
Need a 2009 Entertainment book? Contact a Patrol member or
call Noble Bill Harris 503-625-5143. The price this year is $20.00.
Looking for a Shrine unit to join? You and your Lady are invited to
our October 6th meeting at the Shrine Center. Attitude adjustment
at 5:30 PM, meeting at 6:00 PM. Ladies project at 6:00 PM.
Dinner, after the meeting will be provided by the Patrol Nobles.
And fellowship follows.
And a busy summer it was indeed. We paraded in The Dalles,
Newport, Troutdale and Baker City. We played at the Wilsonville
Shrine Center for the Wedding Anniversary Social and the Rodeo
Social. Other engagements included a concert by the Dance
Band at Meinig Park in Sandy, the full band at the Baker City
Football Game, and the above-mentioned picnic.
Thanks to all of you good "Claquers" who lined the curbs and
cheered us on as we rolled by. If we didn't wave back at you, it
was because we were playing. You may now rest up for the
balance of the year, but we expect you back next parade season.
Fall activities are now upon us, and we are busy preparing for
them. These events will be reported in these columns, so keep an
eye peeled.
Vacancies exist in every section of the band. Should you know of
a Mason who has had some experience playing a standard band
instrument, we have a home (and a fez) for him. We meet most
every Monday at 7:00 PM at the Wilsonville Shrine Center. Drop
by and have a listen. If you wish, you may contact me, Clem
Norton, at 503-253-6180 or our President, Durwood Jaeger at
503-598-0107.
And finally, this word from Plato (427 BC-347 BC): "Music is a
moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to
the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything."
Fine for now.

KADER KLOWNS
MOTOR ESCORT UNIT
Most Shriners and Shrine Clowns know the story of Megan and
her continued efforts as an Ambassador for Portland Shriners
Hospital for Children. And the book she wrote to help kids who are
going to the hospital and to highlight the work at Shriners Hospital
Clowns who help children through this tough time. Megan knows
what it's like to be in the hospital for weeks - even months, she
just had her 25th surgery. I was humbled to be the Shrine Clown
mentioned in that book.
A lot has happened since the beginning of July. The unit started
with a busy Fourth of July weekend. We rode in four parades on
Independence Day, Mollala, Tigard, Rockaway Beach, and
Monmouth/Independence. Then we had a rider in Philomath. We
split the unit for Joseph and Newberg. We the made the trip to
Baker City and had a great time escorting the other units around
town and are proud to lead the Shriners into the stadium. The
game was great too. Everyone had a great time and the
fellowship was fantastic. While we were in Baker we had our July
Motor Escort meeting and made plans for our Burns trip. Six
members of the unit drove our personal bikes to Burns. The ride
to Burns was awesome. We had perfect weather and we ate way
too much at both the BBQ on Friday night and the FFA/4H dinner.
We also had our unit meeting that weekend, where we planned
for the remainder of our parades, the food caravan and the
ABATE Hospital run, After leaving Burns we took a scenic ride
through Jon Day to the rendezvous in Prineville where we ate
again. We got stuffed that weekend, We are looking forward to the
remainder of the year. The Motor Escort unit would like to thank
Illustrious Sir Dan and Lady Jennifer for letting us sell Sees candy
this year. Our sales have allowed us to provide Lady Jennifer with
a patio table and chairs for the center. It’s our pleasure to help
out.
by IS Gary “Punkin” Bowers, PP
by Noble Tom Bland, Captain
Two days after her latest surgery, some eight years a couple
months and days after my first visit to hospital room I made a
return visit. My clown costume had changed a little, however I dug
out as much of the old one as possible for this visit. As you can
see in the pictures nothing much is different except Megan keeps
getting better looking and I get a bit older. I wasn’t her only Shrine
visitor. Oriental Band member Ralph Jubb and Lady Janelle beat
me to it the night before and Ron “Roneee” Ellenson added to her
stuffed animal collection with a fuzzy bear over the weekend.
Candy Sales
Megan continues to amaze me, she travels all over Shrine
Country promoting the Shrine Hospitals and thanking Shrine
Clowns for what they do. If that is not enough she has her own
“Mission”, a project aimed at helping the homeless in the Seattle
area with warm homemade scarves and blankets, new socks and
gloves for those living on Seattle's streets when cold weather hits.
When she visits your Shrine function or Association meeting near
you don’t miss one of her inspiring speeches, and, oh yes, buy
one of her books.
Diabetes Fair
Have a sweet tooth? We can help! We still have a long way to go
to meet our goal in our candy sales. We will be taking orders for
the holidays. You can ask any Motor Escort member to place an
order for you. Suggestion: Buy a Sees Candy Gift certificate. Buy
them now, give them out for the holidays. The gift certificates
never expire and even if Sees prices go up your gift certificate is
good.
Our Unit meeting day has been changed to the first Wednesday
of the month at High Rocks restaurant and lounge located at the
Gladstone exit at 205. Dinner is at 6:00 PM and the meeting is at
7:00 PM. Anyone interested in Motor Escort is welcome to join
us. See you there.
by Lady Jennifer Moyer
Due to circumstances beyond my control, the Diabetes Fair
scheduled for October 11th has been cancelled.
The National Diabetes Foundation Walk/Run will be held that
same day in downtown Portland for those who might wish to
attend. There will be lots of booths and information available
at Waterfront Park. Anyone interested can contact our event
chairperson, Nora Timm or anyone in Amaranth.
As an additional note, the Nydia Temple, Daughters of the
Nile will have their fall Ceremonial that day at the Scottish
Rite in Portland.

BURNS OR BUST
by IS Mel Hervey, PP - Guest Reporter
Burns, Oregon…you almost think that you cannot get there from
here; but it is sure worth the trip. Along with the Harney County
Fair comes the outstanding hospitality of Bill and Sonja Quier.
On Friday , Bill and Sonja with help from the Central Oregon
Shrine Club and Dave and Lynn Johnson host a steak BBQ at
their home. The hospitality is great the fellowship stimulating and
the fun in abundance. Saturday brings the parade. It is short,
down hill and every one from Burns, Harney County and the
surrounding lands either views it or participates in it. After the
parade, if you are still hungry after the Friday BBQ, the Harney
County and Central Oregon provide brunch at the Casino.
Next it is off to the Fair. You can check out the exhibits, maybe
take a carnival ride, and get ready for more BBQ. The Harney
County 4H and FFA provide more food that you have ever seen at
a BBQ...beef, pork, lamb, goat, corn on the cob, fresh vegetables,
homemade canned peaches and jams…all you can eat and more.
Next up is the auction, the main reason we are in Burns. The
Harney County Shrine Club works hard selling raffle tickets to
raise money to purchase meat for our Hospital. We gather in the
auction barn about 7:00 PM and watch the young men and
women display their animals. The crowd is large, energized, and
flush with cash to support the youth. We watch Bill spend the
money raised by the club, and many animals are donated...
including the reserve champion, which was raised by a “Shrine
Kid”. In the end, as usual, the Kids benefit...as it should be.
Thank you Bill and Sonja for opening your home, and for all that
you do in support of Shriners Hospitals for Children.

CARAVANERS SHRINE CLUB
by Lady Mary Jud
If you read the September OASIS you saw the pictures of the
Potentate’s trip this summer which included Joseph, Baker and
Boise. The price of gas was high but that didn’t keep the
Caravaners home. We had a good attendance and a great time.
Be sure to check out the pictures as a “picture is worth a
thousand words”.
We may have one more trip this year – Lake Mayfield. The date
of October 11 and 12 has not been confirmed yet as I write this
article. Of course some may wish to go to Lake Mayfield on Friday
but when you make your reservations you can make that
arrangement. As soon as we have confirmation the President,
Dave Simpson, will send out an e-mail. Be sure to mark your
calendar so that when we get the confirmation and the trip is on
you won’t have conflicts. If you don’t have a computer, please let
Dave know and request a phone call. His number is
503-949-1111. ATTENTION: Everyone is responsible to make
their own arrangements/reservations at Lake Mayfield
1-360-985-2357. Be sure you tell them you are with the Shrine
Caravaners and you want to be with the group. Hopefully this will
be a go!!!!
Noble Larry has been doing this for many years--not for any
‘limelight’, but because he enjoys:
- visiting with local business owners
- meeting new business owners
- and getting a heart-warming experience by helping the
children of the Shriners Hospital in Portland.
COLUMBIA COUNTY SHRINE CLUB
by Noble Ron Ellenson
Our regular schedule resumed last month with an enjoyable
baked ham buffet dinner prepared by Noble Jim Ziegler and Lady
Jean. It was great having Jim back after his recent hospitalization
and we wish him a compete recovery. Noble Jim opened by
meeting and IS Rennie, PP presided during the business agenda.
The Club's upcoming activities include sponsoring a traditional
booth at the St. Helens Children's Fair on October 25th, a holiday
campaign to deliver turkeys to the SHC and hosting the E-W
game spring meeting which is scheduled at our Shrine Club
Building on March 7th & 8th.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 13th and
Lady Jean is planning a buffet dinner featuring zesty hamburgers,
picnic potato salad and a surprise dessert delight.
CENTRAL OREGON SHRINE CLUB
by Noble Jim McNamara
The Madras Beef Raffle is one of two fundraisers that allow
COSC’s contributions to the Food Caravan and the East-West
Steer Auction. It dates back to the 1960's when the Central
Oregon Shrine Club would raise two head of beef to raffle off. The
two head of beef were actually kept on a local ranch, and then the
rancher would give the Shriners the best two in the herd.
The raffle prize has evolved into abeef or cash prize; and the
meat is now purchased at Oregon Beef Company in Madras.
This year Noble Larry Easter pre-sold and personally delivered
almost five thousand tickets at $1 each. To save time and gas,
Noble Larry called businesses in Madras, Culver and Redmond
and obtained commitments over the phone
This year's winner was Round Butte Seed Company, in Culver.
The ticket drawing, at the Rodeo during the Jefferson County Fair,
obtained priceless publicity and visibility for the Shriners.

At the rodeo, the planners wanted Noble Larry to drive into the
arena –with Central Oregon Shrine Club signs on the side of his
car. The announcer, who was on horseback, drew and announced
the winning ticket. The entire rodeo crowd heard the announcer
describe what the Shriners do for children–-and the crowd
applauded very long and vigorously. We could not have paid for
better publicity!
Noble Larry Easter is recognized for single-handedly conducting
the raffle in the Madras area. The raffle takes several weeks of
working every day to make the calls and to deliver the tickets.

SALEM SHRINE CLUB
by Noble L.W. (Lu) Novotny
NO ONE ASKED ME ~ BUT...
Due to the fact that the readers of the Oasis have not heard from
the Salem Shrine Club recently, this reporter feels obligated to
inform you that, we here in the Willamette Valley are still here and
very much alive! As with most units and clubs, we too, took a
summer hiatus ~ just to "kinda smell the roses." Then, as the
weeks and months rolled by, we suddenly realized that we have
"racked up" a big pile of birthdays! The time took with it, our
stamina to work and play as hard as we once did! I feel sure that I
haven't said anything that you weren't well aware of. I just had to
get it "off my chest." OK? Very well! Onward and upward! So mote
it be.
Recently, our President, Ron Orlebek and his Lady Susan,
planned and pulled off a truly great Mystery Trip, one that was a
mystery right up to the time the bus pulled into the driveway of
OMSI!! It was a great treat for each and everyone. Most of us on
the bus had never been to the museum before, which made the
trip special. Great job Ron and Susan!
The only other thing I want you to be thinking about is the
Veterans Day parade in Albany this November. Do we want to
participate?
Remember, our usual meeting will be at Neufeldt's on our regular
meting date October 13 – dinner at 6:00 PM with meeting at 7:00
PM. All are welcome.
TUALATIN VALLEY SHRINE CLUB
by Noble Herb Richardson
The Tualatin Valley Shrine Club enjoyed their annual picnic at
Cook Park in Tigard on August 20th in spite of the rain. And wow
did it ever rain just before everyone arrived to enjoy the wonderful
food and companionship. We had about 26 souls who ventured
out into the showers and managed to find us under the picnic
shelter trying to get enough fire going to cook a couple of
hamburgers and hotdogs. As can be seen from the picture, it
looks like all were having a good time and were dressed rather
warmly for an August afternoon. Yes, it was a might chilly. Thanks
to the ladies who provided all of those wonderful side dishes and
to President Ron for the hamburgers, hotdogs and buns.
The next undertaking for the club will be the Screening Clinic for
the Shrine Hospital. This event takes place at the Salem Hospital
on Saturday November 8, 2008, beginning at 8:00 AM. This
function always draws a large crowd, a lot of kids, parents as well
as Shriners. In recent clinics about a hundred youngsters have
been screened, with a very large percentage referred on to the
Shrine Hospital in Portland. A very successful and productive
undertaking indeed!
And so, as the excitement and fever pitch slows down, the current
officers look forward to nominations and elections of officers for
the year 2009. Of this one can be sure, The Salem Shrine Club is
believed to be the oldest Shrine club in Al Kader (with meetings
dating back to 1915) and having been chartered in 1956. This
group will be around for a long, long time. Let's hear it gang,
"Three Cheers for The Salem Shrine Club!"
SANTIAM SHRINE CLUB
by Noble Dave Simpson
Hi Everyone,
Well, the year is almost at an end, most parades are complete,
and new officers are about ready to assume their responsibilities.
We didn't get a chance to have our usual barbeque at Miles’, as
he was sick the day of the event. I am happy to report that all is
well now, and things are in good order.
Our last two parades (Aumsville and Sublimity) were well
attended, and as usual, the weather was FANTASTIC. Please be
thinking of who you would like to become involved as officers for
the coming years. I will say that my last two years as President,
were very rewarding and I had great support from everyone the
entire time.
The Crab Louis Dinner on September 14th at the Al Kader Shrine
Center in Wilsonville was not the big sellout that we were hoping
for but we had about 100 people show up for a wonderful spread
prepared by “Chef” Ralph Jubb and his band of helpers in the
kitchen. Many thanks to the members of the Al Kader Oriental
Band who did the food, serving, bar and spun the big wheel of
chance. Also, thanks to Ruth McCulloch, an organist from a local
Tualatin church, who provided some wonderful musical selections
during dinner, played on the Al Kader grand piano. Congratulations to the many prize winners who walked away with some
pretty nice pieces of booty. Maybe we’ll get a couple of pictures in
next month’s issue.
The next general meeting and lunch will be at 11:30 AM on
Wednesday, October 15, 2008. We will meet at the Beaverton
Elks and, although I do not have a firm agenda for the meeting, I
think there will probably be nominations for next year’s officers.
So come be a part of the decision making process and let’s keep
our club on a roll.
Don’t get “spooked” by the goblins and hope to see you all at our
October meeting,
Al Kader OASIS - October 2008 - Page 15
GRESHAM SHRINE CLUB
by Noble Don Slezak
Our next meeting will be October 15, 2008. The dinner will be
meat loaf, garlic mashed potatoes, green beans, fresh green
salad, rolls, dessert and coffee or tea at the M & M Restaurant,
137 N Main, Gresham. The cost is still only $14.00 per person.
The business meeting is at 6:15 PM. That is the time to give us
your ideas about how to improve attendance, menu options or
anything for the betterment of the Club. Without you we have
nothing.
The Oasis starts at 5:30 PM, Remember all Shriners and Masons
are welcome including your wife or girl friend(s). We always have
a good time and there is a door prize drawing and attendance
drawing but you must be present to win.
We will have a speaker. As of press time nothing has been
confirmed. You can be sure the program will be interesting and
informative.
Get your reservation in by October 13, 2008. All you have to do is
call Donna Dennis at 503-665-3955 or Betty Stowell at 503666-6134. Reservations are very important to the restaurant and
the club.
Be sure to wear your fez!
LINN COUNTY SHRINE CLUB
by Norman Wates, President
Nobles and Ladies it is all in the past, Mary’s Peak Trek is history
for 2008, with some pluses and some minuses. The stands were
nowhere near to full and over flowing--may be due to the extreme
hot weather; or on the other side of the coin maybe, as an
association we are not doing the publicity that we should, to let
the community know who we are and what we do. Year 2009 is
fast approaching so let’s hope we can do better next year.
On August 27th, 2008 eleven Honored Ladies and ten Nobles
enjoyed a great dinner at American Legion Post # 10. We were
short on attendance but I guess the last fling before school started
many were not yet home from their summer enjoyment.
President Wates called the Ladies and Nobles up for a moment of
silent prayer in memory of Lady Virginia Friedrichsen. May you be
peaceful and happy in that house not built with hands, Eternal in
the Heavens.
I am sorry to inform you all that, Lady Charlotte Gregory was
called home on August 31st, 2008. There was a great turn out to
offer their respects to Charlotte; WB Scott and family, our condolences and prayers go out to you all.
Please keep Noble George Eldredge who is recuperating at home
after suffering a stroke, as well as Ladies Charlotte Low, Dianne
Schrock, Christina Meek, Minnie Watts and their Nobles in our
prayers also.
Membership is always a work in progress. Remember that we
have one more Ceremonial this year on November 22. You still
have a few weeks left to flail the bushes.
Nobles this will be the last reminder for our screening clinic for the
hospital Saturday October 11, from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM at the
Lebanon Hospital. Plan to attend and wear your Fez please.
Thank you Noble Bob Larkman; for chairing this committee--great
job Bob. Also thanks to Noble Dan Strand, Vice President of
Benton County Shrine Club for getting their Club involved again.
East Linn Masonic Lodge # 44 will be there also with their
Children’s ID program. Thanks to Noble Pat Patterson for getting
this program in motion for their Lodge, there has been a great
response from the surrounding community
Nobles it is near that time of year again for dues. Please remember you must have your dues paid in your Blue Lodge and Shrine
Center before your Shrine Club dues can be accepted.
NORTHEAST SHRINE CLUB
by Lady Peg Schuler, Reporter
Fall greetings from the NESC members; how quickly the seasons
change. I'm not ready for the rainy season after all the beautiful
warm weather we've had lately. The Northeast Shrine Club had a
good attendance at our Sept. dinner meeting, hopefully we will
have twice as many this month. Oct. 8th, 2008.
We will be meeting again at our favorite restaurant, The Refectory
on 122nd and Halsey. 5:30 PM-6:00 PM will be set up and
socializing, 6:30 PM dinner will be served and at 7:00 PM our
speaker. The menu this time will be Chicken Supreme or Pork
Dianne, and the salads--tossed greens, or cottage cheese and
fruit. The price is $15.00 each.
Please make your reservations with our telephone Lady Peggy
Schuler 503-287-6627 and be sure, if for some reason you can't
make the dinner meeting, to let her know of your cancellation.
We were saddened to learn that we have lost another member
Noble Charles F. Breeding. He was a very active member until his
health broke. We extend our sympathies to his family.
Hope to see you there at our dinner meeting. We always have fun
visiting with each person present.
Our speaker will be Kay Webber Ekeya who is Public Relations,
And Community Affairs for the Shriners Hospital Portland, 3101
S.W. Sam Jackson Park Rd., Portland 97239-3009. We are
always eager to hear about what they are doing at the Shriners
Hospital for our Children. We are also very proud of our Hospital's
newest patient from Iraq. It is so awesome what our Shriners
Hospital Doctors do for them. God Bless our Hospital staff and
volunteers and our Noble Shriners.

We also had a chance to take a tour of the hospital, and heard

My friends, if you ever wondered why we do the things we do with
the Shrine and Masons, being at this event really brought it home
